Althought it is common for CPA firms to request past tax returns during the new-client screening process to assess your situation before formally engaging with client, but best practices and professional standards recommend that these requests should occur via a secure method and ideally after an engagement letter or agreement is in place. Sharing sensitive personal information such as your previous tax returns before you sign an engagement letter or formal agreement exposes you to privacy risks and could be seen as premature, especially if there is no clarity around who will access your data and for what specific purpose.​ With the way my initial call is handle and how request of past year tax return is made, I would not recommend this firm for anyone seeking or considering them.
