They let my son train on the mat with one of the senseis before signing up and committing to payment. This was a great way to ensure that my son was comfortable with the program. Sensei Berj, in particular, was kind and explained the different entry packages and pricing options to us before we made a decision. I also appreciated how the school assigns kids to groups with equal belt levels. This made it easier for my son to adjust and get comfortable with the program. The instructors not only teach karate but also instill values such as respect, kindness, and responsibility in the students. They go above and beyond to create a positive environment for everyone. First off, the coach at Versus is really friendly and my son has good things to say about him. My son does say that the classes are hard and tiring, but that's how it should be. I will admit, over the last few months, my son was not able to go to classes consistently bc of life changes happening in our family. But we tried to take him as often as we could. On the other hand, I want to warn you about the front-desk chick. She is curt, often cut me off, repeated herself to me rudely during conversion, and attempted to talk down to me a couple of times. My last conversation with her eliminated any possibility of me ever returning or even properly recommending this place. If you are thinking of joining, be prepared to sign a 1-year contract in which there really is no out, unless you're willing to fork out an additional $199. God forbid that you should have any life changes where you move away, lose your job, get another job, or endure life's struggles during a pandemic. Our one-year contract is coming to an end, and I went in to speak to the front-desk chick about it. I was thinking of either simply not renewing the next year's contract altogether, or I had thought of asking if there was an option where we could continue to attend fewer times a month or even join a different payment plan. Her attitude and demeanor towards me made me completely rethink any option of wanting to stay. We only have one month left (which I didn't realize we'd have to pay beyond our contract end date), and I asked her, so is there any way that you all work with someone who needs to end their contract early bc they moved or something, and her response was well, we have people that come all the way from Redlands. I thought, okayyy, good for them. Even though my son has barely attended the past few months, I never considered asking if we could get out of the contract during that time. I simply made the 1-and-a half hour trip once or twice when I could, and decided to pay to finish out until the end-date on the contract. However, this type of service goes to show that they don't value you as a customer, and they just want that one-year contract from you. I was also telling her how she could see that my son had barely attended the last few months bc of moving and was going to explain more, but she cut me off and said yeah and we provide the service that you pay for. She also condescendingly told me, that's why there's a contract. I simply laughed a little because it was so awkward, and I then told her, you know, you make it difficult to talk to you. She then shook her head and said, I tell everyone the same thing, and I said but yes, it's hard to talk to you about anything. I had also interacted with her months before when my son came out of a class and was frustrated to the point of tears. So after I asked him what happened, and he told me, I said I wanted to get peace of mind before the next class because he was so nervous and upset about it. I called, and the front-desk chick answered. I told her my concerns after I had asked to talk to the coach and she said he was in a class. I told her that I was just calling, as a mom, to find out what happened and to let the coach know about my sons nervousness. It's been awhile so I don't remember all of the conversation, but I remember feeling so frustrated afterwards. I remember being brushed off, like my concerns were nothing. That was the only time I had called about my son and I even told her that I wasn't complaining, I really was just concerned. I remember her being very defensive with me and just telling me something to the effect of, that's how these classes are and all the coaches know what they're doing. So be warned, if you want to join, the coach is nice enough, but the customer service at the front desk is awful.
