For our first full-day trip after an intensive course in Maine, we found reality in Brevard, NC much better than the practice ponds. We went on the private reserve with Than Axtel, our guide, and started to get hits on the first casts. As newbies we lost more than were landed, but 15 between us in the net was pretty good for the first time. Than was relaxed and incredibly patient with my knots, breaks, and trees and must have shouted "set" a thousand times. Definitely a first rate operation and a great store. We like the store, we like their stock, but we didn't engage them for trout fishing on the Davidson River, so we're keeping our rating at four stars. It's a cool, store, however. The staff here is friendly and eager to help out: the river, of course, is scarcely a half mile away, so it's easy to get what you need and get to fly fishing in the water very quickly. They have a very large collection of flys and other fishing equipment, and one part of the store offers clothing and other fishing-related items. Fun to browse here, and we gather from what other Yelpers have written that you can expect to catch some fish with their guidance. Good stuff. read more

First time fly fishers and DRO was a great intro. My husband and son were under Robs wing, who taught them the basics at a small part of the Davidsons River. My son fared well, pulling in about 4 trout, 18 inches long. To boot, a beautiful cool, crisp morning made for an overall memorable experience. We'd use these guys again. read more

The trout guides at this store are amazing. Landon Lipke is who I've used a couple of times is so thorough in his delivery of service. Always throughout the whole day teaching and encouraging the techniques of fly fishing. As a Florida native, I learned fish with a spinning reel and rod. The art of casting a fly rod is much different and requires a Lot of practice. But Landon on our last trip kept instructing and encouraging me on my technique until the last few minutes of our time on the river. I caught a lot of fish, and he always was on the lookout for that lunker in the shadows. I've also had similar experiences with Than. Both are exceptional guides and individuals who will make the best day fishing as possible. If you are looking to fly fish for the first time or you are experienced, I highly recommend this fly shop. read more

We paid for the excursion and it was a joke. She caught trout with the help of the guide. There was no teaching and after asking several times about teaching her to tie a fly, they never did. Said they would make it better and then more than a year later, nothing. Overpriced for what you get. In spite of what David M said, there was no teaching. It wasn't her first-time fly fishing so she had the basics down. At the very least, could have taught her to tie a fly properly. read more

Terrific time on the river! Kelly was our guide and he was amazing. I love fly fishing and wanted my son to experience the fun. Kelly was a great teacher. He really took the time to explain all aspects of the sport. He really knows the river and put us in some hot spots. We caught fish right and left all morning. Great people! From the ownership on down, these are extremely knowledgeable and exceptionally personable folks. I have fished with most of them, been to Montana twice with them and purchased several rods, reels, leaders/lines and enough flies to earn a degree in entomology. Know what, I'd do it all again. If you are looking for overpriced merchandise and a staff that seems bothered that you walked in the door, this is the perfect place for you. My son and I stopped by this fly shop a couple weeks ago before fishing the Davidson River. We asked the gentleman behind the counter what was currently working on the river. He said, "Anything small." I asked him what parts are the river were good right now. He said,"It's all good." Wow...thanks man...that was super helpful. I will normally pay premium prices at a local fly shop to support local and also gain information on the fishing in that particular area. Amazon would have been just as helpful as this guy. I later found out by speaking with a local why this fly shop has no idea what is working on the public parts of the Davidson River. They do not fish them. That's right, they lease a section of the river downstream and charge people to access it. This is also where they take their guided clients. So, if you want to fish private waters where the fish are heavily stocked and fed, like a petting zoo, stop in and book a guided trip with these guys. If you enjoy paying full retail for all merchandise and $3.50 for a wooly bugger, this is your kind of shop. If you desire good prices and a knowledgeble staff, I would research some of the other shops in the area. read more
