It's a smaller and much quieter alternative to neighboring options, but still has everything you could want for the perfect beach day. Bathrooms? Check. Showers? Check. Food and beverage stand with a variety of options? Check. Short walk to the beach? Check. Everyone mostly behaves on this beach, which I appreciate. It's definitely not a "Hamptons party beach" (if you're looking for that vibe, Hot Dog beach would be my pick, where the surfer bros like to hang. It's worth noting that the bathrooms at Tiana don't open until the last week of June, so if you're coming here for the day before then you may have to brave the port-a-potty. Also, if you see a seal on the beach here, leave it alone or face a fine. That said, they're so fun to spot -- promise my seal photos are taken from a far distance with a zoomed in camera.

My husband tried to walk from Ocean Beach, but was thwarted on the bayside path by the gated private Port O Woods community. Apparently, he could have walked over to the beach and continued walking, but he didn't know this, so we picked him up by water taxi in Ocean Bay Park. After the forest, we walked on to Cherry Grove, and then I continued walking to the Pines, which was a lot of walking, but a good way to see the island.

The well-maintained and beautiful meandering wooden pathways allow you to see all of the beautiful plants and sea peaks of the Bayside as well as the ocean and the dunes. Don't go off the path as there are notices about poison ivy as well as ticks. It's recommended to wear bug lotion when you visit so you don't get bitten. We usually leave the sunken forest and visit Cherry Grove for drinks and food in town. Coming here on an overcast day is probably easier as there are sections that are out in the open and will be very hot. Make sure to bring your garbage with you and leave no trace behind while enjoying this national park treasure.

Though I grew up less than 15-20 min. away, this beach was not in my township (Huntington) so we stuck to our own local N. Shore Long Island Sound beaches (rather than pay a craaazy entry fee). Off season, everyone's a resident of everywhere/anywhere, so a beautiful, sunny February afternoon was a PERFECT opportunity to check out Callahans. We had the whole place to ourselves, and my sister and I checked out the upper picnic area, the new/improved playground, and the wonderful views around the perimeter of the parking lot. Rumor has it there are other trails, but we did not see them, so we ventured down to the entrance to the beach to get a closer look at the BEAUTIFUL views... NOTE: I don't believe you can park in the little circle near the stairs leading down to the beach, though strangely enough, there are handicapped parking spaces there. This beach is many things: scenic, secluded, convenient if you live in the area, great for families, picnics, and golf fans, but it is definitely NOT handicapped friendly, unless you just plan to enjoy the view from above. There are MANY steps to get down to that beautiful beach, and you'd better be in reasonably good shape AND not forget anything in your car, because it's a TRIP up and down those stairs. While my sister and I didn't find the hiking trails that are supposedly there, we did hike the full length of the beach, a WONDERFUL walk all the way to neighboring Sunken Meadow State Park beach and back. BEAUTIFUL, invigorating, and very do-able, nearly 3 miles back and forth. Well worth the "ride!!" Some of the best things/places on Long Island are still free, especially if you go off season... Check this place out!!
