Davis Cemetery District & Arboretum - Historic grave monument

Yolo county residents receive a reduced cost for a burial plot with proof of residence and/or property taxation, those outside of the district can still utilize the services but with additional cost. Davis is now known as a college town but its historical agricultural roots run deep. This cemetery is located on what was formerly the outskirts of town surrounded by farms. There are a few fields left that haven't succumbed to the developers' bulldozers, but while the now residential neighborhood is part of bustling Davis, behind the cemetery gates lies a peaceful resting place for generations. The lush plantings, heritage trees, and grassy knolls have status as an arboretum; people can bike and walk through the grounds. When my mom passed this summer, through a circuitous set of circumstances we discovered this cemetery. It was the place that resonated as the closest to a peaceful Midwestern cemetery and honored my mom's roots. Judy was very helpful in arranging the grounds tour and site selection this summer. Available by phone, email, and in person consultation, she has an excellent manner for this difficult work with an air of earned competence and attention to detail. She helped make arrangements for the graveside burial service which we had in addition to a chapel service off-site at the funeral home. Pricing was clear and fair. There are events throughout the year including an on site art gallery, Dia de Los Muertos, and the option to have a wreath or solar lantern placed graveside at Christmas/holiday season. The historic nature of the cemetery, peaceful environment, and beautiful grounds make for a valued community resource that is available during the difficult process of death and funeral planning.

I am giving it 5 stars however for some of the really old, beatifully crafted, angel statues that hover over some of the headstones. I remember a particular semi rainy, drizzly night where I took my 4x5 camera, my housemate's cigarette lighter powered spotlight and took some great 15 minute bulb exposure photographs of these angels. As I was in the middle of this the police showed up probably thinking we were pillaging the graves or something. So after briefly trying to explain my photography project we tipped them off to the group of teenagers getting wasted about 300 feet away. Sorry guys, I had to get the PO-PO off my back.

We tried five different places that she chose based on the group's preferences. We had a cocktail, a coffee drink, a dessert, and a few different dishes from midtown restaurants. I never felt full (the F word!) but I was happily satisfied at the end. I had never eaten at any of these places so now I know more great places to try. Dawnie has an amazing depth of knowledge about the area, the food scene, and the history of our Farm to Fork capital. She loves the city and it shows in how she highlights it in her tour. The biggest surprise for me was the street art. I had never noticed these murals nor did I realize we had a history of street art and unique festivals. I will definitely be checking those out more in the future! I hope to do more of their tours and explore other parts of the city in the future!

Their garden was more beautiful in person, and it was a pleasure to walk through it... along with the other gardens. The Pence Gallery itself is very nice. We stopped by because we had will call tickets for the garden tour. The lady at the front desk was very friendly and welcoming. She gave us a little goodie bag which we appreciated. The place was clean and organize, it was also serene and relaxing. As for the garden tour event, the description on the Pence Gallery website said there would be 7-10 gardens. Sadly, there were only FIVE + a stop at the gallery, and it literally took us less than two hours to do the whole tour. We definitely would have planned our morning differently had we known there were only five gardens. Hoping they offer more gardens next year! Other than that, we had a good experience at Pence Gallery and their garden tour event.

We the weather being so unpredictable we had to wait. I was fine with wait because i do value my life. I had the chance to cross off a major item from my bucket list. A hot air balloon ride and wow, what an experience! The views were absolutely breathtaking. Floating high above the landscape, seeing everything from a completely new perspective, was truly magical. The sunrise was especially beautiful as we drifted along, and the silence up there, broken only by the loud occasional burst of the burner, was unlike anything I've ever experienced. That said, there were a few things to consider. The heat from the burner can be overwhelming, especially if you're not prepared for it. I didn't wear a hat, and I really wish I had and i am short 5'2 those blasts of hot air can get pretty intense when they hit you directly! So, if you're planning this trip, definitely bring something to cover your head. The landing was a bit of a wild ride, too. The ground was much harder and more uneven than I expected, and we didn't quite know where we'd land until we were almost on top of it. Also getting in and out can be extremely challenging. It's hard climbing into and out of the basket and it's very tightly packed. Not a lot of space to move. I knew the risks going in but the whole experience was so worth it. Even with those little surprises, it was absolutely incredible. Would I do it again? Definitely not! Despite the heat and the bumpy landing, the beauty of the experience makes it all worthwhile and a one timer for me. I highly recommend it if you're looking for something unique and unforgettable to add to your list of adventures. Just don't forget your hat!

This made some of the undrinkable. Others were somewhat warm cloyingly sweet as to be unpleasant. Overall, though both of us are fans of boba tea- we would suggest a different vendor or more training for the staff preparing the samples. Roughly half of the flavors were not good at all. Additionally, they listed "boozy" flavors on the menu but never said anything about how to get those or whether they were included. Second problem- we preordered dumplings as did apparently a LOT of people. There were no dumplings on the train, only rice bowls. Furthermore- the waitress didn't know what we were talking about when we mentioned having preordered food. At least half of the tables in our car had preordered dumplings and were very disappointed. There was no information on how to obtain a refund if we didn't want the substitute of a rice bowl. About halfway through our trip, the train lost power which included lights, air conditioning, and the ability to flush toilets. Power stayed off with no explanation for more than 15 minutes, causing the car to become very warm and stuffy. Overall, this excursion suffered from lack of communication, lack of staff training, lack of preparation on the part of the organizers. Given the cost, I would not recommend this.

The great thing about DSF is that they provide all the gear necessary for your catch. We were going out for Tuna as Bluefin are now found in the waters off the west coast, we were all pretty excited to go fishing. All we brought with us was food and drinks, having everything else included was a bonus. In the event we caught anything, they'll cut, clean, gill and give us fillets. The boat ride was awesome, no one got seasick thank goodness, there's ample seating inside and out. It was super foggy in the early morning, but cleared up by the time we started. I've not been on a fishing boat prior to this trip, and I was blown away at how scenic and beautiful the water was out there. The bright sunshine gave the water a super bright blue appearance, it was cool. Captain Kyle and his deckhand got everyone rigged up and ready to fish. The Captain is youthful and took his time answering questions and giving advice. His mixture of humor and knowledge of where the fish were was certainly a bonus because as soon as lines were in the water we heard, " Fish On!" That first Tuna took everyone on board including my son Parker to reel it in ( Posted Picture). What a freaking rush. It was exciting watching as everyone reeled something in on the boat. We laughed, joked and had such a fun day out on the water with friends. On our way back in to harbor the Captain pointed out several whale pods swimming around the boat, it was a trip seeing them jump. We enjoyed our lunch and talked about who caught the biggest tuna. In all honesty, that first one was the biggest in my book. I can't say enough great things about Captain Kyle and his Diamond Sport Fishing. Reservations were easy as charters go out practically daily either 1/2 or full days. The waters off of California are changing, getting warmer, they're seeing Bluefin Tuna and Marlin so who knows, maybe our next trip we'll catch something epic! Overall Impression: A+
