The directions were not clear as to where we were supposed to arrive. There was no address to meet at. After going back and forth with customer service, they eventually gave a landmark, which did not exist in the uber and Lyft apps and was questionable on Google Maps. Everyone in their uber got dropped off to different places. The directions also said to go to "the yellow building" -- but when we arrived, there were several yellow buildings. The tour guide also was not carrying a lantern, which was part of the directions given (look for the person carrying a lantern.) When we finally found her, we asked the tour guide where her lantern was, she said she didn't want to carry it around all night. We also believe the tour guide was late. We were in the area looking for her for about 15 minutes and we passed by the same spot she ended up being at several times and did not see anyone. Finally they called and we went back to the spot and she was there. This was around 5 minutes past the start time. Then she told us we only have until 7:30. So we are ending on time but she didn't start on time? The tour guide took us around to several bars, but the first one she admitted that it was not even haunted, or that she was not sure if the bar was haunted or not as she was not familiar with the bar. So I'm confused why we went there? There was also no indication that this was only going to be an hour and a half. It was fun bar hopping with our friends in some spooky places, but considering I paid almost three hundred dollars for the group I expected a higher quality experience.

The guided tour is free, but normally requires a reservation 48 hours in advance online. We didn't have tickets, but I called in and spoke to a nice worker who was able to accommodate. The tour begins with a short introductory video, which was a bit on the boring side. However things got interesting. The guide used a model of the mansion to explain the additions throughout the years, which helped bring the history to life. The mansion is four stories however the tour only goes up to the third floor. The entire guided tour lasted about 50 minutes, and truly you get to see a lot. My favorite was the master bedroom and the governor's office. It was interesting learning about today's governor. Realistically running the state from the mansion. It is prepared with secure phone, lines and Internet. Another nice bonus photos in the mansion have never been allowed, but rules have changed two months ago. You are now allowed to take photos without flash. Overall this was a wonderful experience, especially for adults and young families so with it being free. That said I would not bring very young children, as the rules are extremely strict on no touching and nothing is roped off. Highly recommend if you are visiting Sacramento and wanting a free Meaningful activity!

My review is focusing on this specifically, due to the significance of the internment in my family's life. Information specific to the book / this event: The Ireichō is a book listing every person of Japanese ancestry incarcerated in the World War II camps. The Ireichō is currently making its way across various stops in the US, allowing family members and those that knew the incarcerated to stamp their loved ones names as a way to honor them and what they endured and their strength. After the tour, the book will be gifted to the Japanese American National Museum (in LA). The stamping of the Ireichō occurred inside the main entrance of the museum, and the museum graciously allowed those stamping the book to tour the rest of the museum. Museum staff and the staff hosting the event were very welcoming. The museum itself has both long-term and short-term exhibits, listed on their website. It's fitting that they currently have a temporary exhibit at this time called, "Kokoro: The Story of Sacramento's Lost Japantown", from December 20, 2025 to March 29, 2026. If you're interested in some of CA's history, it makes for a nice stop. It is Downtown Sac, so it's all paid street parking or lots in the vicinity. There is a lot right across the street.

The capitol museum is part of the Sacramento Badge Pass. I didn't realize it until I left that I could've received a discount for showing my event badge. Parking kind of sucked. I didn't know where to park so I parked in a structure on 13th and P. If you're visiting when they're still doing the construction for the expansion of the capitol building, then I would suggest parking on the western side of 11th or 12th street. You can only access the building on L or N streets through a security checkpoint on either the north side or south side of the building. The front side (from 10th street) is not an entrance. However, that's the best place to take pictures. I would've explored the garden, but it was way too hot to venture outside of the a/c for too long. We got a tour from Chris, one of the sons of Mr. Don Salvatori, he was a wealth of knowledge and a very friendly pharmacist who is also an excellent docent. My kids didn't have much patience, but they had fun pretending to be a pharmacist and dispensing Rx (M&Ms) and learning about what pharmacists do. I have a lot of interest in cool historical artifacts, and pharmacy has some of the coolest historical items around. All sorts of tools that used to be used in making medicines for your health and well being. Before mass manufacturing and prepackaging took the mystery and arcane aspects away. This is a place where you can see the change in the look of a pharmacy from one era to the next. Just looking at products from another place and time is fascinating. (Think of something like in a Harry Potter movie!) I visited with a couple of friends who were also very interested in pharmacy history. We ended up talking with the very knowledgeable docent for 2 hours! He had a lot of funny historical anecdotes that he shared. For example, old pharmacies used to carry a lot of natural products such as sarsaparilla root. Sarsaparilla root used to be used in old concoctions. In the US, lots of these old base formulas seemed to morph into popular soda drinks: Coca Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and root beer.
