The Pence Gallery is a small two story art gallery in Downtown Davis that offers free admission. Recently I came to visit with my friend who now lives in Davis again and likes to frequent galleries. I should make it a point to visit galleries more than I do, because even though I am no expert I do enjoy looking at art, and we have so many great galleries in the area. I found the Pence to be an intimate space and I liked that there were pieces available for purchase. I know Regina W. and I were both eyeing the ceramic donuts hanging in the stairwell for $40 each. Some of the collections on display during my visit were: Tinderbox: Water in the West Sculpture by Jeff Downing This mixed media collection featured found treasure from various west coast rivers and lakes, treasure that some might label as junk. I didn't think it was junk; I thought it was lovely. Each work had at least one glass bottle incorporated. Lauren Sullivan: The Golden State These were so beautiful. They were framed pieces in the stairwell, and featured antique topographic maps of National Parks, with stunning gold leaf shapes. If I could afford one of these I would absolutely buy one. Marsha Schindler: Life Whispers, Listen Carefully These installations were really cool, sculptures and carvings mostly, made from different materials. The trees with the faces of women were my favorite. On The Edge: CCA Clay Viola Frey inspired sculpture by students and alumni of the CCA (Ca College of the Arts) were displayed in a sunny room on the first floor. The R2D2 bong was my favorite, naturally. These collections were available in March, some through April of 2022, but one should check their website if they're curious about future collections: https://pencegallery.org/

I absolutely adore the pence! They always have such amazing exhibitions and works on display. Most of their artists are from the general region and they are even committed to supporting local artists and art students. I've been to many holiday sales and craft/art fairs here. They are great places to buy gifts and support local artists!

Such a quaint gallery in the middle of a bustling davis neighborhood. I loved this gallery, it was so cute and homey. Inside the gallery hung art pieces for sale, such as paintings and small porcelain figurines. The designer of the gallery was there at the time I went, she was super helpful with explaining the exhibits and friendly. It was very easy to talk to her. I loved the "Consilience between Art and Space" because it showed the intersection between biological concepts and artistic mediums. The exhibits were very cute (and yes for u instagrammers, very cool to take pictures with). The other exhibit had many paintings depicting humankind's relationship with the corporate world. The surrounding area was decorated with wall art and ceramic sculptures.

Hearts for Paws aka Dani, Brandi are going above and beyond to help us find a dog that is meant for…read moreour family. This rescue is known to rescue dogs on the verge of being euthanized, paying exorbitant vet fees to care for the animals and pouring through dozens of applications to find a perfect forever home for each and every dog. As a non profit organization this is no easy task. When the time comes, we look forward to meeting our newest family member. Thank you for all you do.

I cannot recommend staying away from Hearts for Paws enough. I'm not someone to leave negative reviews EVER. But our experience with Hearts for Paws was so awful that I feel compelled to warn others away. We were very interested in doing a trial adoption (and hopefully adopting) a dog from them. We brought her home for what was stipulated to as a 5-7 day trial. When we picked her up, the foster noted some concerns they had--namely that the dog wouldn't do well in a small apartment like ours, as she was currently running on a 5 acre property. They were also concerned that she wouldn't do well with our cat, as she has a high prey drive (though we'd been told by the rescue that she was good with cats). Knowing this, we still decided to give it a try. The poor dog whined every day and night. She'd settle for a short period before beginning to whine and pace again. It was very obvious that she was upset and needed more space. We took her for 3 hour long walks each day, but even that wasn't enough. Further, the whining and pacing intensified, and she started jumping at closed doors, including the door to the room our cat was in. Our cat was petrified. Heartbroken but knowing this wasn't going to work, we reached out to the foster and the rescue. The foster was a sweetheart, and was ready to meet us to take the dog back. The rescue was another story. She rapidly started lobbing attacks at us when we explained we wanted to return her as soon as possible. She said horrifying things, and even told us we should hold onto her longer because "no one had died" so all must be well. She told us that if she had to take the dog back sooner (mind you we were trying to return the dog to the foster, not her), it would risk this dog's and other's lives. She sent us a photograph of a dead dog's brain splattered on the road, telling us this was the kind of thing that happened because of people like us. I won't share the screenshots of her messages or the photo, as it doesn't need to be done here. But needless to say, this is not a rescue worth dealing with, nor is it one who seems to really take seriously what's best for pets. I would not ever go near this team.

I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. If you are interested in volunteering, check out their website and register in advance.

Within all of this stuff, was a bunch of new and lightly used clothing. In the past I have donated clothing to my local Goodwill Express. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!
