If you're traveling through at dinner time and don't want a chain restaurant, this is one of the only choices. We were with a large group of college students who were starving. Luckily they had a buffet that included all the fried food your heart could desire. My college friends all felt sick after eating the buffet. It seemed like they fried all of the food for the buffet at lunch time...and then just left it up there till they closed. I try to eat healthy, so I went with the grilled chicken breast, grilled veggies, and mashed potatoes. The chicken tasted like fish, the veggies were straight out of a frozen bag from Wal-Mart, and the mashed potatoes were powdery. We travel through Childress on our way to Colorado pretty often, and I will never eat here again. The service was really great. Very southern hospitality and the cleanliness of the place was up to par. That was about all it had going for it though. read more

Passing through on our way to ABQ and we stopped here for breakfast - staff was friendly enough and place was pretty full but I think it's because there's nothing else for a gazillion miles - there were 3 of us and all three plates took more than 25 minutes to serve us and then to top it off were over cooked - not a little but a lot - my husband ordered a cinnamon roll on the side and it was salty, if there was cinnamon in it I'm not sure where it was. I'm not really sure why this restaurant doesn't have better reviews. My friend and I were driving from Amarillo to Dallas. We were so happy that we chose this spot to have lunch. It was $8.25 for a buffet filled with the best pan fried chicken I have ever had and the best fried catfish my friend has ever had. The service was splendid and such a hometown feel. I had no problems with the cleanliness of the bathrooms and all of our food was fresh and delicious. We met a ton of nice people at the restaurant that are regulars and some that drive a lot just to come here for the buffet. Coffee is watery, but other than that, this place was one of the BEST meals my friend and I have ever had thus far on our 26 day road trip. read more

My family and I got the buffet style lunch, and it was definitely worth the $9.99. The chicken fried steak was crispy on the outside but moist on the inside, the mashed potatoes and gravy were perfect, and the bread rolls were so soft. I was disappointed by the lack of flavor in the corn and the amount of spice in the broccoli and cheese soup. For dessert i tried the banana pudding and pie. The pie was tasty with a crust that was not too dry but not too moist. The pudding tasted artificial but I still enjoyed it. Service was speedy and friendly. Stopped here on our way to Santa Fe. After finding a few of our other choices were closed we decided on this one. Staff was very friendly and always good to see a family restaurant that is still owned and operated by the restaurants namesake. I had the chicken fried chicken and my son had the chicken fried steak. Both were real cuts of meat...no processed frozen cutlets here. The sides we chose were fried okra and mashed potatoes. The okra was good but the potatoes tasted like boxed flakes. My husband had the catfish. He said it was good but the portion was small and they were out of the pinto beans he requested. Good stopping place and good comfort food. I do believe with the few choices in Childress. TX, we would be likely to stop here again. read more

The buffet tonight had chicken fried steak and fried catfish. I love them both so that is what I got. They were both very good even for a huge fan. My wife and daughter ordered off the menu and was a bit slow to get their order. It was late and a huge rush of folks leaving. So I might assume that played a role. Family owned restaurant with a small town atmosphere. Steak was AWESOME! Cooked and tenderized to perfection. Nachos Grande was huge and included everything you wanted on your nachos (jalapeños, olives, tomatoes, meat, beans, and more). Salad bar is clean, well stocked, and fresh. Waitress was very sweet. We ordered one burrito with hamburger meat - they sent out one with fajita meat instead. My nachos were okay but no real flavor. The sour cream was a week out of date. The waitress was very kind and refilled our beverages. She didn't gripe when we came in at 1:35 and took care of us. It could have been better. Wish more flavor and tastier food. read more

This restaurant is not closed. It appears to have been remodeled and very nice inside. Service is fast and food is hot and really tasty. Had loaded baked potato soup with my sandwich. The chicken vegetable soup was a surprise hit. Tons of green beans and squash. Lovely road trip dinner.

Dawson's is in the parking lot of the Best Western and after traveling in a car all day, it is nice to walk to dinner. I had the salad bar/soup combo and the husband had a grilled chicken breast and baked potato. They were fine. The service is great and the interior is a little tired and dusty. Let me give a little background. My 2 small boys (ages 3&5), myself, and ex husband were on our way back from the NFR in Las Vegas and had drove all night. We decided to stop off for breakfast thinking a small town family owned restaurant would be great. Our waitress wasn't friendly at all, yet she was to others who were obviously from the area. I thought maybe due to our somewhat rough appearance after traveling all night so I explained where we were coming from and didn't even get a smile. Our food came while I was taking one of the boys to the restroom and 2 of us needed refills. When I came back we didn't have them. Halfway through our meal she never came back. I had to get up and walk to the beverage station and ask someone else to get them. Our waitress never apologized or checked in even then. The omelet was delicious and my boys loved their food. I had the French toast but they had obviously not used enough egg and in places it was more like toast. Finally we got our check and went to leave. The cashier told us the card was declined (there was no charge attempted when we called the bank), asked her to run it again and she ignored us so we paid with a different card. On the way out she wished us safe travels and that was the first time anyone had been 1/2 way pleasant. We won't be stopping again. Food decent, service not so much. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE! One of the worst restaurants I've ever been to! Stopped by here on the way to Dallas. There weren't a whole lot of options so we settled on this place because it had had some favorable reviews. Plus I'd rather give my money to a Mom and Pop shop instead if a chain. The experience started off terrible and we should've left then and there. The waitress was rude, impatient, and not at all concerned with us as customers. I am a low maintenance customer and was fairly irritated with her attitude. In defense of the other waitress on staff she seemed kind and attentive, far more than ours did anyways. From there it got worse. My wife ordered the chicken fried chicken and I had the chicken fried steak. In fairness the CFC was not bad, but the CFS was terrible. They both however tasted like they poured a cup of salt on top of the food. My wife left most of hers but I felt obligated to eat what I'd paid for, BAD DECISION! Within 10 minutes of eating my meal I started to feel REALLY nauseous. I've NEVER had food poisoning or gotten sick from anything I've ever eating and I've travelled all over the U.S. And throughout Europe and eaten at some questionable establishments. I've got an iron trap for a stomach but in no time I was bringing that dinner right back up in the bathroom, twice. Anther review had said they'd gotten sick but I didn't heed the warning. The overall experience was so terrible I am writing my first review ever on a restaurant. I worked in the food service industry for ten years so I always thought people wasted there time with these things and just wanted to criticize others. Dawson's family restaurant was such a bad experience I was compelled to try and prevent others from facing my same fate. This restaurant is obviously lax in there good safety and cleanliness. If you eat here you'd better hope you pick a day they decide to not serve rotten meat or spoiled food. read more

Horrible food that is extremely over priced! We thought we were safe with a chicken salad but I am not sure if the meat was real chicken and the salad and ingredients were old. $9 for a salad slightly bigger than most restaurants side salads!
