First of all, let me say I WANTED to like this place, based on the reviews and the menu. I was looking for a local coffee house I could go to on my work break that had creative drinks and might have gluten-free bread to go with their toast or sandwiches. I looked online and on Instagram for a phone number, and couldn't find one, so I couldn't call to see if they had gluten-free bread. I decided to risk it and try it out anyway, because I was exhausted and their Bread 'n Butter latte sounded like the perfect pick me up. I got there and the guy at the counter informed me that they didn't have their toast, gluten-free bread, the Bread 'n Butter latte, or a phone number! I thought about leaving right then, but I decided to try the Let's Get Figgy latte, which was decent, but not good enough to bring me back after the other disappointments. My wife and I visited DAYDRINK on a chilly Saturday morning, and we were delighted with all aspects of our experience. Food/Drink: Pastry -- Cream Cheese Coffee Cake (Perfection, this sweet treat was soft, moist, and full of flavor. Rating = 9.3/10.) Drink #1 -- Hot Vanilla Latte (Delish, not a big hot drink fan but this was an exception to the rule! Rating = 8.4/10.) Drink #2 -- Iced Vanilla Latte (Wonderful, really all I could ask for out of my favorite coffee order, not to sweet and excellent espresso taste. Rating = 8.4/10.) Service: No complaints on the service. The shop wasn't too busy so our order came out as expected with little wait! Ambiance: The location is unique - located in a neighborhood amongst what appears to be primarily college housing units. The building itself is really cool - albeit, quite small - and is decorated/themed with a lot of intention. The shop has a retro vibe with a VCR tape collection, nostalgic children games, and other late '90s / early '00s antiques lining the walls. Overall, this spot is one of our favorites in the Iowa City area, and we will definitely be return customers! read more

DAYDRINK is a cool kids kind of spot. The main wall has shelves lined with VHS tapes, and there's tiny TVs playing movies. A part of me would have love to have lingered for awhile, but there were zero open tables. The drink specials are intriguing. I had a fall seasonal latte with pumpkin and peanut butter, and it worked. It also came in a glass jar, which I took to-go. The pastries come from Breadworthy, and it may be the only way to enjoy this biz outside of the farmers market. If you see a slice of coffee cake, make sure you include it in your order. I was excited to stop by this coffee shop again while passing through, as I remembered enjoying it on a previous visit. This time I ordered two drinks, the Fru Fru Matcha and the B&W Cookie Latte. At $7 each, I was expecting a premium experience, but unfortunately, both drinks missed the mark. The main issue with both was texture (I'm not a texture person normally). Despite ordering whole milk, they had a strange, chunky consistency-- my guess is likely from unshaken cream top--not spoiled, but definitely unappealing. The Fru Fru Matcha tasted mostly like strawberry milk, with little to no matcha flavor coming through. The B&W Cookie Latte was very gritty, almost like it had undissolved cake-like batter in it, and I couldn't get more than a few sips in. The texture of both drinks was so off-putting, I wasn't able to finish either drink. Also, despite being the only customer in the shop, the wait time felt surprisingly long considering there were four staff members working. I don't mind paying more for quality, but $14 for drinks I couldn't enjoy left me disappointed. It might be worth reconsidering the use of glass jars instead of biodegradable cups. If that's part of the pricing structure, customers don't always know that upfront... and may not want to pay an extra $1-2 per drink for a jar they didn't ask for. At this point, I'm not sure I'd return unless the drinks are refined. I'm sharing this feedback in hopes it helps improve the experience, because the creativity and concept are clearly there, just not quite dialed in yet sadly. read more

Serving coffee in glass jars to reduce the amount of paper and plastic used and roasting their coffee in-house from ethically sourced growers around the world, DAYDRINK is a few steps above the competition in an already well-balanced Iowa City coffee scene. Originally, DAYDRINK launched their first location on the downtown Pedestrian Mall but has since focused on this location in the South of Bowery neighborhood not far from the historic Longfellow neighborhood. MENU: A mix of drip coffees, signature lattes, tea, and small bites, everything I've had is excellent and well-balanced, from the straightforward cold brew to the "Bam Bam," a Fruity Pebbles cereal-infused latte. PRICE: For the level of quality and detail, the menu is very affordable in my opinion. A standard drip coffee is $3.00, a cold brew is $5.00, and specialty drinks run between $6.00 - $6.50. I've paid way more for far inferior coffee in New York, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Madison, Wisconsin. SERVICE: Every barista I've had has been extremely attentive and I can always tell they know their stuff. I regularly chat with baristas about some of their favorite cafes in Chicago. ACCOLADES: In 2023, Sprudge named DAYDRINK to its international Class of 2023 list, a major honor for any coffee shop. MISCELLANEOUS: Parking is limited to street parking on Bowery and surrounding residential streets. It's a quick walk from Downtown Iowa City and several historic neighborhoods like Longfellow and Lucas Farms, not to mention it's an easy bike ride from the Iowa River Corridor Trail, Dubuque St. and the Court St. Trail. The shop makes good use of its space, but table seating is limited so it's not an ideal place to study or work from home.
