Arrived here without a reservation on a busy Amsterdam summer Saturday and was luckily able to be seated. The tables on the front patio are very close together, typical for Europe, which makes for an interesting dining experience since it seems like everyone's conversations are easily overheard and your dining choices are looked at and commented on by your dining neighbors lol! We were in the mood for steak since there are so many Argentinian Steak Houses here you can't help but be enticed by all of the photos as you walk by. We decided to share a Cote du Boef aka "bone-in ribeye steak"; 900 grams ( a little less than two pounds) for $55 BUT they ran out so the waiter offered us the tomahawk 1100 grams for $75. We regretted that decision-more on that later... A hot stone was delivered to our table along with the salad and frites. Then...our HUGE piece of beef was sliced by our waiter who had a hard time fitting the whole thing onto the hot stone which then cooked our beef while we waited and watched. It took a lot longer than we were told it would take since the slices were very thick. Once we were able to try the steak we were disappointed by all of the fat and gristle. I'm sure at least 1/2 of the steak was inedible. So...we each probably got about 250 grams (1/2 lb) of meat, which was mostly tender. This was only a little more steak than if we had gone with their smallest filet mignon for a much more economical price. We are glad we tried a tomahawk steak once but feel like it was a waste of money. We didn't care for our main waiter's attitude (but that may be a culturally-based viewpoint since we are Americans in Holland). We had three to four different servers waiting on us which added to the feeling of indifference we caught from the servers. The hot stone just felt like a gimmick, but then again, our steak choice wasn't the greatest for the size of the stone. We would have been happier if we had had a much smaller piece of beef for each of us.

Since I always stay at the hotel right next to Day's StoneGrill 1870, I ALWAYS pass by here. I figured at some point that I should actually check it out since it's literally right across the street. If you want a lot of meat, this is the place for you! Typically European restaurants don't really bring out massive pieces of beef if you want steak. Not here! Ordered the Côte de Boeuf, which came out to a massive 900 grams (or about 32 oz for us folk that are used to the Imperial system). Monstrous piece of beef that was easily enough for two people. The grill is also right in front of you as they bring out a hot plate. Make sure you don't overcook your steak! Only quibble I might have was that I wish that the steak had a little more flavor, but other than that it was really good. Also comes with fries, so we were very full by the end of this meal. Service was fine, no complaints from me. They cut the steak off the bone after bringing it out and sliced it out for easier grilling. The rest was up to us though. Overall, glad I finally tried Day's StoneGrill 1870. It's basically an American-style experience in Amsterdam.

Tables were small and all close together but the service was very nice and was a good speed! The food was good! Would recommend!

Great ambiance, incredible views, and a solid overall experience. Service in Europe is . . . different. Not bad, just not what I'm used to, so I try not to let that impact things too much. One thing I do want to call out: my daughter's friend has a severe allergy to seafood, nuts, and kiwi, and the staff was incredibly attentive and accommodating. That wasn't our experience everywhere in Europe, so it definitely stood out and was appreciated. We went simple with two steaks: the "Mrs. Porter" and a bone-in ribeye. Mrs. Porter needed a little more seasoning, but the ribeye was . Sides? Honestly don't even remember them . . . which probably says enough. The highlight might've been the "Mr. Fox" dessert. They bring out this chocolate fox head, pour liquid nitrogen into it, and crack it open tableside. Super cool presentation. Dessert itself was good, not amazing . . . but I'd order it again just for the show. End of the day: great ambiance, great views, good food, and a fun experience. I'll definitely be back.

The drink prices on the other hand are outrageous. 36 euro for the smallest martini I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, it tasted great, but still. Paid about 82 euro for two martinis and a non alcoholic drink. Probably gonna steer clear for the rest of our trip. There are much better and more affordable options outside the hotel.

Had to remind him that everyone at the table had ordered one. We ordered a dip-able starter and some expensive bread. The starter came out but no bread. After we had finished the starter, the bread finally came out. A little sad. Dinner took forever to come out but it was great. Ordered the filet, medium rare. When it came out it was good., although it only had a drizzle of sauce. It was odd that the gave us one basket of fries for three people. We had to get another one immediately. I doubt we'll be back.

It's a nice little place, you can sit in the front of the restaurant where the chefs are cooking or the back dining room, away from the outer doors. We opted for the front, it was neat to watch them cut and cook our meat. We went with the Wagyu carpaccio, scallops, and tuna tartare as the appetizers. These were all absolutely incredible. So fresh tasting, made to perfection. The right amount of flavor. Next we ordered the tomahawk. We didn't realize until after we were eating that it was bison. It was so fantastic, I'm actually glad we didn't know because neither myself or husband had ever tried it before so it gave us the chance to try something new that we may not have ordered. It was cooked perfectly for us. The right amount of pink. It was so tender to chew and in my opinion the right about of fat on the cut. The lobster was great, it had the right amount of butter than a slight hint of lemon, not overpowering. The breads were good but the butters stood out, absolutely heavenly. So creamy and flavorful. I am going to dream about this when we leave. The broccoli/cauliflower and mushrooms were just ok to us, nothing gave us a wow on them. Overall the meal was fantastic. My husband said it was the best meal in his life. Our server was very kind and attentive. The chef and owner were also exceptional. Everyone made us feel very welcomed and taken care of. We never felt like we were being overlooked or ignored. We would recommend this place if you're looking for a great meal and service and not a bad price tag. For the quality of food, the price is on par with that and worth it all.

Upon arrival, the host asked if we had made a reservation. Not knowing this was required, we were initially pleased that he agreed to accommodate our party of three. Then, things changed once we were seated. As we were looking over the menu to decide what to eat, I started coughing due to a "throat tickle." When I took a sip of water from the bottle I had been carrying with me, a different employee told me that I couldn't drink from my water bottle in the restaurant. When I explained why, he continued to make his point. A waitress came to take our food order, but seemed unhappy with our choices. Noticing this, when she returned to take our beverage order, we decided on only water instead of the wine we had originally planned to order. Throughout the rest of our time at Castell, my friend noticed that this waitress repeatedly gave me looks of disapproval. The food was the only good part of our experience, and I would give it alone 5 stars. There is a traditional fire grill on which the meats are prepared. The filet mignon and lamb chops were perfectly seasoned and delicious! Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was uncomfortable and unpleasant. Our waitress gave me an annoyed look when I requested the check. My friend and I split the payment. As she was paying, the waitress mentioned the "skip the tip" option, so my friend obliged her. I went ahead and paid a tip as I felt her problem was more about her than me. Despite the authenticity and quality of the menu selections, I cannot recommend Castell based on how we were treated.
