Wanted to try something new in Amsterdam, so we came to De Nachtwacht in Rembrandtplein. Didn't realize it was such a famous steakhouse! Since we came pretty late, none of the appetizers were available and only steaks. Which was fine for me, since I didn't want to waste any valuable calories on anything but steak. Ordered a massive Côte de Beouf (800 grams or 28 ounces) and some Grilled Vegetables on the side. This was an extremely well-cooked steak! European medium rare borders closer to rare than medium, which is fine for me as long as the steak is cooked well. Quite tasty! Service was fine, no complaints from me. Came here on a Sunday night with a reservation. This place does get busy, but there are bar seats. They can accommodate groups of all sizes. Service was friendly and timely. There is plenty of outdoor seating, especially when the weather is warmer. 1. Burrata - very good with fresh flavors and balsamic which was not too acidic 2. Pork ribs - forgot to take a picture of this one button like the other ones on the page. They use a sweet garlic sauce, which was a good flavor. The meat was tender as well. 3. Brownie - much more rich than I expected, which is very good to split. Pairs perfectly well with the vanilla ice cream and whip cream. 4. Steakhouses are everywhere but this restaurant has really good steak and probably the best ribs in the city. And yes you should get the ribs even though it's a steakhouse. Service is typical Dutch, friendly. They have an outdoor dining area. Most people in the outdoor dining area will be smoking, so to avoid that ask for a table inside. It's always a good idea to call ahead for a reservation. This restaurant has been here since the 70s . And yes its very likely they will be busy especially on weekends. Upon arrival my heart sank a bit as it seemed a bit touristy. And not so upscale. Anyhow I had walked a bit so decided to stick to the plan. Sat at bar place was not crowded (though pretty packed by the time I left). My server was an awesome friendly Dutch guy full of recommendations and chit chat. Went with the French onion soup and ribeye with baked potatoe. About the steak. Rich and nicely marbled, thin cut very juicy more so than what you'd see in the US. Very solid piece of meat. My server was on point with wine recommendations and he is pretty knowledgeable on it. All in all pleasant experience with solid food. Many tourists sure but who cares? Staff will take care of you! Every street in Amsterdam seems to have a few things in common; coffee shops, cheese stores and steakhouses. We happen by this place one evening and walked in. Very welcoming and friendly staff with patio dining. It was a bit chilly so we opted for the covered patio. We ordered the French Onion Soup to start with then ordered Entrecote (Sirloin Steak) and Spareribs. The Spareribs and French Onion soup were fantastic. I would definitely get these again. Diane and I recently enjoyed a leisurely dinner here, across from Rembrandt Square in the heart of Amsterdam. We were thankful that we had secured advance reservations through an online request, for by the middle of our meal the restaurant was fully packed with people, and every seat was occupied. Obviously dinner reservations are essential here. After briefly warding off aggressive pigeons near our al fresco table, I began with a hearty appetizer of Snails in Garlic Butter that was perfectly prepared. Complimentary addictive Bread with Garlic Butter soon followed, with Lobster Soup without Cognac for Diane (a modified version of Lobster Bisque), and nearly classic French Onion Soup with melted Gouda Cheese for me. Next up for me was a Mixed Salad with egg, cucumbers, mixed greens, large pieces of tomato, radicchio, toasted pine nuts with Vinaigrette Dressing, and really peppery Pepperoncini. After these starters, I was more than ready for my chosen entree of medium-rare Angus Ribeye, and buttery melt-in-the-mouth Baked Potato, while Diane got ready to savor her ordered medium-rare Lady Fillet Steak with French Fries. Of these several offerings, only the French Fries needed some improvement. The Ribeye was enhanced both visually and gastronomically by a few small cooked and unopened tomatoes resting on top. Service was friendly and attentive. In fact, the manager volunteered to call a taxi for us after the immediate vicinity around Rembrandtplein was closed to cab and Uber traffic around 8:00 p.m., and walked with us to an outlying road to greet our driver for hire. And it felt really cool fine dining in an unfamiliar European country while sitting outside at a patio table that overlooked the fabled square bristling with large bronze likenesses of the famous Dutch artist Rembrandt Van Rijn, soldiers, and night watchmen, like chess pieces arrayed on a checkered board. We could see this steakhouse from our hotel room window at Atlanta Hotel, so naturally, we had to go over and give it a try. Service was kind of slow, but the food more than made up for it. And I suppose this isn't the type of establishment where people rush to get in and get out. Although many of the previous Yelpers wrote about how awesome the ribs were, this IS a steakhouse, and they had an extensive steak menu, so I felt I had to try a steak. I got the Lady's fillet (200 g) with baked potato, and my bf ordered the rib-eye steak with salad. It was perfectly cooked and very delicious. My bf also ordered what we thought was garlic bread, but when the server brought out bread with butter and herbed butter, we weren't sure if that was already included in the meal, or if that was our order. The bread was really fresh and delicious. And later, when our entrees arrived, the server brought out another basket of fresh bread with the two kinds of butter. So I guess that was what we had ordered? But we got 2 of them. Anyway, the food here is a bit pricier, but that's to be expected of a steakhouse. Definitely worth it for a nice meal out. read more

Let's start with the food. The beef tartare was not good. While the portion was generous as an appetizer, it was served with two tiny crostini. Upon asking for more we were instantly unsold on a loaf. Ok fine. The bursts I had was lovely and really was the salvation of the meal. When taking my partners order of lamb chops, he wasn't asked regarding the way he would like it prepared. I get it I'm a tourist and don't speak Dutch, but most people are English friendly. Our waiter couldn't have been more cold and unfriendly. Back to the food, we flagged down the wait staff and requested rare. These lamb chops couldn't have been thinner, drier or more chewy, a full disservice to the lambs sacrifice. I had a beef satay, which was decent, if not a bit over done on the beef as well. So after poor service and poor food we didn't risk deserts. Overall, loud location and not worth the experience. Disappointing. read more

This was the most upsetting service of our trip. My fiancé and I tried to eat here twice. The first night it was full, so we opted to try the following night. The second try, we were able to be seated inside (no reservation, however the inside/outside was still pretty open at this point). Our order was taken pretty quickly after about 5 minutes, and still water brought right after. We then proceeded to wait about 40 minutes with no service as the restaurant started to fill up with their reservations. Another waiter saw our table, and asked us if we had received our appetizer, to which we said no. He then brought out the lobster soup within 30 seconds, apologizing for the wait. We then waited another 25 minutes, watching food fly out of the kitchen to other tables, including food we had ordered. Our original waiter then stopped by and said they were out of one part of our order, after we watched him deliver the same item to four other tables. We then watched the table next to us get the same order we placed (Salmon and Lady Steak) even though we sat down 15 minutes before them. We ended up leaving after that since it seemed we were going to get no food from this place. I'd recommend most places in Rembrandt square, but not this one. read more
