The food here is always good. Reminds me of my mom's cooking. The only drawback is we don't get here very often.

We stoped by for dessert. What a disappointment. Blackberry cobbler is pie crust with small pieces of blackberrys. Lemon meringue pie is ok. Store bought pie crust not made in store when you say you make desserts in house and open a can of lemon pie filling n store bought crust. Then the disgruntled waitress, We asked for spoon for coffee, had to go to counter and ask for spoon. Had to ask for forks for the desserts. Never brought napkins, asked for refills of coffee didn't bring until I paid. We felt like we were from out of town or something. Not friendly read more

Food was cold and tasteless. I ordered the what I believe was the Nine dollar special. After the food was served I asked for a bill at the table. You would have thought that the world ended. "We don't do that here". I would like to have a bill with the amounts shown please. "You get that at the counter" could you lease get a bill for me. A irate woman comes to my table and writes real big on my numberless ticket $10.25 plus tax. I still have no idea how much I owe but see that they just make up numbers. I finally went up to the counter and asked, as I had never been in that town before and knew not the tax rate there. She stated: " Are you ready to pay now?" I paid 11 something as I got no receipt. I just wonder if that scam to rip off people is ok with everyone of the fifty other people, before me, she stated didn't get a bill to compare either. read more

This lovely coffee shop is a slice of Southern culture and hospitality. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The food is absolutely fantastic. They have daily specials that have become quite famous in this little area of Dayton. The pot, roast, pork chops, and chicken livers are to die for. The prices are absolutely reasonable. The food is delicious and the servers are friendly. I was very surprised to see a couple of negative reviews. After reading them, it is clear that they are either ignorant, or just grumpy people. You don't go into a southern coffee shop in a small town, and expect to find a vegan menu or a fancified gourmet coffee... give me a break. I don't understand why skinny jeans and beanies have anything to do with the quality of this, or any, coffee shop. Some people are just grumpy. If you ever are near this lovely establishment, I strongly recommend you stop in for a delicious meal and a hefty helping of southern hospitality. read more

This is not a coffee shop. It is a well managed restaurant with good value American food. Specifically, comfort food. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, etc. I actually like this place a lot and I would say it's probably the best all around restaurant in dayton. Wonderful staff, great service. read more

Nestled down a side street, across from the courthouse, surrounded by the latest 're-purposing' of the Dayton business district (dozens of second-hand outlets), you'll find a hidden gem, an old-styled, no frills, southern-styled restaurant, the likes of which in years long passed, before the advent, proliferation (and blight) of ubiquitous fast food outlets, might have graced a street in any southern town worth the name. Each eatery had its own 'take' on the regional dishes that filled its menus; and each developed legions of patrons who filled booth and table for daily, weekly, or special occasions. There's nothing glitzy, here. The decor is as plain and worn as most of its patrons. However, it's an honest type of worn, and if the carpet or tables have a few scars, it only reflects the wear that droves of customers have provided through the years. I'm fond of their fried green tomatoes, pinto beans, meat loaf, and pork chops. However, my favourite remains the 'beef & gravy' sandwich, served with 'real' mashed potatoes. The generous portion of pulled beef is served on plain bread, then covered with a savoury brown gravy. "OhYEAH!" I, as a 16 year old vegetarian, did not like this restaurant much at all. My family and I went on a Sunday, and the options on a Sunday are extremely limited. They do not offer well over half of their menu on Sundays, since it is their busiest day. Really the only thing they had was chicken or vegetables. I got broccoli, green beans, and mashed potatoes. The broccoli was sopping wet & had no flavor. The green beans tasted as if they had been cooked with ham or pork fat, which is disgusting. The mashed potatoes were fine, and so was the bread roll. My family enjoyed their meal, but they are not very picky at all, which is probably why. They did seem like they had a lot of dessert options though, and my dad and grandmother said that the coconut pie was good. read more

You may have gotten your hopes up by the words "Coffee Shop" in the name. I'm sorry. I hate to crush your dreams but Dayton Coffee Shop is no coffee shop. When most of us hear the words "coffee shop", we picture comfortable seating, hip vibes, skinny jeans, hand knitted beanies, and well... COFFEE. Like more than just a pot made with a Mr. Coffee maker. And if there's only one kind, it should be GOOD coffee. Like the best darn java you've ever had slide down your gullet this side of Juan Valdez country. But alas, you won't find such superior brew here. First, let me qualify what I'm about to say by telling you that I don't like super strong coffee. The kind that puts hair on the chest of a newborn is not for me. I am also very sensitive to caffeine and try not to consume any after about 2:00 on or I'm awake for 2 days. So when I say the coffee at Dayton Coffee Shop is weak, I mean that I could drink a whole pot and sleep like a baby in her mother's arms. All I could taste was the creamer I added and the Truvia I keep in my purse. Get the picture? Based on previous reviews I wasn't actually expecting a coffee shop experience but I WAS expecting an excellent home cooked breakfast. The breakfast was "meh" at best. My husband was impressed with the $1.50 price for a side of bacon so he ordered up some extra crispy. It was neither extra nor crispy. There were two limp little strips of regular old bacon - not even the extra thick or hickory smoked kind. His French toast were humble slices of white bread and, I suppose what else could we expect for $3? Certainly no baguettes or brioches here. One reviewer said the biscuits were the best she had EVER had so you know I had to order some with an order of the homemade gravy the waitress boasted was made from scratch. I am very concerned for that poor reviewer. She needs to get out and find some REAL biscuits to sink her teeth into. Dayton's weren't awful, but they weren't great either. And the gravy? It was beige nothingness. No taste, no salt, no flavorful bits scraped from the bottom of the skillet. Just... nothing. The people seemed really nice and our waitress was pleasant and friendly. I could've done without her calling me sweetie since we were clearly about the same age. But I just chalk it up to her environment. People EXPECT a Southern waitress to call them darlin', sweetie, sugar pie, or doodle bug, I guess. We were just passing through town and were starving. When we left, we weren't starving. But we weren't basking in the afterglow of a delicious, home cooked breakfast either. Sorry, y'all, but if you're starving when passing through Dayton heading southbound, just try to hang on and make it to Chattanooga's Bluegrass Grill. That's what I wish we had done. read more

Contrary to what some other reviews say, this IS a Coffee Shop. It is a Coffee Shop in the old usage, where you stop in to have a cup of coffee and shoot the breeze. It is also a full blown restaurant. Dayton Coffee Shop has been around longer than ALL of the chain and independent Coffee Shops and employees of what some classify as expected of a Coffee Shop, and they are successful as can be seen by the packed house from the lunchtime crowds. Before it was Dayton Coffee Shop it was The Daytona or some similar name and this was way back. I don't see them changing the name of a successful restaurant just because some chains have changed expectations of what a coffee shop is supposed to be. They were here long before any of these chains, or individual coffee houses and shops. And they don't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. For those expecting some kind of the cookie cutter coffee shop, think "Local Diner" instead. The food is good, it's fresh, you can order off the daily specials or the menu. The daily specials are posted on chalkboards on a couple of different walls, the cakes and pies are made fresh. The place is clean and it is a good place to get an good inexpensive meal with attentive and quick staff. The local hometown hero's photos are posted all over the walls, Veterans going back to WWII and forward to currently serving military. Everybody knows about the restaurants founder and his bio is on the front of every menu. It is right in the center of Downtown Dayton, one block from the Historic Courthouse and surrounded by lots of small shops. read more

Probably the best biscuit that has ever crossed my lips. We came here after our original location was no longer opened for breakfast. After sitting down we realized we were very short on time. We ordered the same dish, biscuits with gravy and sausage. After ordering we told the waitress we were in a bit of a rush and she was able to get the food out to us pretty quick, this was greatly appreciated. As I said, biscuits were divine and the sausage patties were tasty. We could not have asked for a better breakfast. We now have a new spot for breakfast when we are back home!! read more

For lunch, the chicken & dressing or dumplings, the country style steak and the open-face hot roast beef sandwich are the tops in comfort food.. Specials (both meat & veggies) change daily.
