Very very Rude staff! Over phone and in person. They were not kind and seemed surprised and put out for my needing the care plan credit card to pay for the service. In preparation for wisdom teeth surgery, the clinical staff did not explain anything that was happening to my 23 year old daughter. This made her very anxious which delayed the procedure because she needed to calm down before anesthesia. She walked away with a bloody mouth full of gauze, 1 tiny ice pack and 1 measly extra gauze pad. For such a nice place and a routine procedure, one would think we'd be satisfied, happy customers. Dr. Tien and his staff are the best! Getting my wisdom tooth taken out here couldn't have gone better. I quickly got scheduled for an initial visit where he answered all my questions about the surgery and recovery. A week or so later I came back for the operation, which was easy and quick. They made me feel relaxed before going completely under. When I woke up I asked when they were going to start! My recovery was great and the doctor also hopped on the phone with me when I had a question about my medication. I was reimbursed for the co-pay within a month and a half. Care was great. Billing was highly irregular even as my insurance provider told me. I feel that I was upsold and hustled. ~$500 for some antibiotics and generic painkillers for a standard wisdom teeth extraction. I understand insurance may be to blame but I had to call them to get my reimbursement back after the insurance chipped in after i paid in full up front on the estimate. I was referred here for my wisdom teeth extractions. Being a bit older I was very apprehensive, and was not really looking forward to it. Let me tell you, this team had it together. From the front desk staff to the medical assistant Billie, it was first class care. Each step was clearly explained, I was reassured by their thoroughness and kindness. The day of the procedure went perfectly and my healing was very good. I had pain (of course) but it was very manageable and everyone checked on me before during and after my treatment. So excited my dentist referred me to Dr.Tien for wisdom tooth extraction! I was so nervous after watching countless YouTube videos but Dr. Tien delivered on ALL his promises!!! (Minimal bruising and pain! Nothing like what I was expecting!) Dr.Tien was unbelievable! This was my first time getting botox and not only does it look AMAZING and super natural, but he took the time to explain everything and answer all of my questions. I do not recommen this office or Dr Scott Rothenberg. They first started out by a bait N switch on me switching Tien for Rothenberg. In a state of great need I could not forgo dental assistance anymore and took a chance. So we have Bait N Switch and then we have over billing. They overcharged me by at least $500.00! They follow up with refusal to give me my teeth ( claiming false state legislation) and falsified their records to reflect the overcharged services. To top it off they gave me another person's medical records ! A nice looking office can't replace ethical and human medical treatment and this is not the office to find it. When you're asked to pay out of pocket up front, like any other business...don't do it. Dishonest people don't bode well for a good experience. read more

This might be a good place to get dental work done, but only if money is no object, and clear and consistent communication is no object either. What I was told orally about billing and insurance never matched what actually happened. I was given an estimate in which I was supposed to pay 2700 dollars, and insurance would cover another 1000. It was surprising to me that I'd have to pay so much out of pocket, since I had two active dental insurance policies. But orally, they reassured me that this was the official estimate, but probably a larger chunk would be reimbursed. After the procedure, weeks passed...I heard nothing about a refund. I looked at my insurance statements online, and saw that even less was covered than the estimate. I called the DC Surgical Arts Office, and got vague reassurances that they had to wait and see, and it often took months. Before my appointment to check on the procedure, I still had gotten no refund, so I sent a lengthy email asking for clarification of my billing and refund status, and postponing the appointment. I got a phone call from the office, and again was vaguely reassured that they always "fight for their patients" with the insurance company, and it often took months. They would call me back to update me, they said. I heard nothing more for weeks...and then I got a bill in the mail from DC Surgical Arts for 450 dollars MORE than the 2700 dollars I'd already paid, and it was stamped "Past Due" even though it was the first I'd heard of the bill. I'm going to contact them, but I have low expectations about fair dealing or sticking to their oral reassurances. I do not recommend this place, unless you literally don't care about price or about businesses sticking to their oral reassurances. read more

Before my appointment at DC' Surgical Arts I received three text messages. The first two messages, sent the Friday before and the Tuesday before my Wednesday 9 AM appointment were reminders asking me to confirm that I was going to be at the appointment. The third text message which was sent at.7:38 am on the morning of my appointment, said "Please don't forget to complete our online registration form". This was the first time that the registration form was mentioned, and I received it 20 minutes before I had planned to leave my house. The form itself was the longest registration form I have ever filled out for any doctor I have ever visited. The doctor's office had to have known how long the form was, and how long it would take to fill out. Why was the form sent mere minutes before my appointment? In my attempt to comply with the doctor's request to complete the form I left my house late. I was rushing and got lost because I was not familiar with the area. I ended up missing the appointment and was charged a $200.00 fee. It seems to me that the entire situation could have been avoided if I the office had sent me the request to complete the registration materials in a timely manner. read more

Beware, beware, beware. Unnecessary procedures performed, questionable charges, and aggressive selling. SEE UPDATES BELOW. Now they want to extort me over this review. ----------------------------- I recently came for a simple tooth extraction and was charged out of pocket over $1000 and counting, and that's after insurance. It was an emergency, because of an infected root canal, and unfortunately didn't have the wherewithal to properly think it through. In retrospect, I was completely taken. First off, I was asked if I wanted pain drip over and over, even though it was clear that it would not be permissible, because I had just eaten. The cost for the drip would have been $500 dollars. To push pain killers that should not even be allowed is deplorable. Second, I had a far back tooth removed. Generally this is a few hundred dollars at the most. However, I had a bone graft done and related procedures which pushed the cost up by another $700 dollars. This is clearly not covered by insurance, but they suggested that it would be. Also, they didn't really present any options and that a bone graft is completely optional and not necessary. Thirdly, and I should have seen this as a huge red flag, the amount of paperwork and waivers they want you to fill out is specifically designed to put you in collection and recover any charges. When a dentist asks for your driver's license number, that should be a warning sign. Fourthly, I was asked if I wanted to do biopsies on my extracted tooth. Another $500 dollar expense. I said no, but they wanted to send it anyway and waived the charge. Today I received a bill for $188 dollars from the lab for the tests. The office told me I had signed the waiver and to contact the lab. So if I had gone along with them, it would have been over $2000 in getting a tooth extracted. Out of pocket. They still managed to extract both a tooth and a $1000 from me though. Beware, beware, beware. -------------------------------------- Update: I keep receiving LabCorp bills for the biopsy that I did not approve. They told me to ignore it, but just received another bill because DC Surgical tried to get it covered by my health insurance which was of course denied. This is never ending. Update: I have been told DC Surgical will pay the lab, but only if I remove this review. Full extortionist email below: "We are ready to take of the LabCorp bill for you as a courtesy. We will need you to please update the reviews so we can take of this bill in a timely fashion. Please have updates completed by March 29, 2017. If you are looking for a surgeon, do not go here! If you are referred here by your dentist, beg them for another referral, anyone other than Dr. Tien, and his rude staff would be better. Dr. Tien is probably one of the most condescending people in DC (including the President whom I can only assume he takes communications cues from). While he is not guilty of criminal malpractice, he will take every opportunity to tell you how much money their practice brings in. And to be honest, if I made a living off of overcharging my customers, I would be much more financially successful too! Initially, the staff will say anything to get you in the door. However, once you have the surgery, they quickly back out of their promises and commitments to you the patient. Quite simply the office is either inept or lazy as they will not do their due diligence to ensure that any estimate they give you for a surgery is accurate. If you are like me and you dare to question their post-surgery price changes, his assistant Rene will threaten to destroy your credit by sending you to collections. Looking around Yelp, at first, I was surprised at all the positive reviews. However, I would soon learn the unfortunate cause for all the happy talk. If you are one of his billing victims and you take to Yelp to warn your fellow countrymen; brace yourself for a call from an angry Dr. Tien in which he will not only brag about his "amazingly successful practice" but also threaten to sick his team of lawyers on you. Please learn from my mistake and go somewhere else. At first, I thought they were just desperate for cash and needed to find new and innovative ways to get money in the door. However, after talking to Dr. Tien, I (unfortunatly) know way more than I ever would want to about how successful he is. I would, however, posit that most people would make more money if they could back out of promises and demand additional money from their patients. If you do not like being overcharged or threatened with lawyers, please learn from me, and avoid this place at all costs. Dr. Rothenberg and his staff are fantastic! I had a wisdom teeth extraction and the entire process was clearly articulated while being up front about costs. My dental insurance provided coverage for the wisdom teeth but was up in the air for covering anesthesia. Dr. Rothenberg called me the night before the appointment and laid out a plan where I would only pay the amount discussed regardless of insurance coverage. I was pleased to hear and moved forward with the process. As an added bonus, they were able to supply all of the prescriptions needed after the extraction without having to visit a local pharmacy. As a super bonus, Dr. Rothenberg called the same evening to check on my recovery status. I've never been called by my doctor especially after hours prior to DC Surgical Arts but they do seem to add a personal touch other oral surgeons do not. Wasted 6 months of cat and mouse with insurance and their billing dept. long after the extractions were complete. I went for the first time on a Groupon for a small amount of Botox. The doctors there are not medspa doctors, they're actually MD's They are very up front with you about what you have injected where and their MD background makes the whole process less stressful, they're extensively trained. Since the Groupon, I have gone back for more Botox and some filler. It's no more painful than a couple of bee stings, but the end result is well worth it. Dr. Scott Rothenberg is a superb Dr! I recently got 2 wisdom teeth extracted. We really went through my surgery options. I felt good going into surgery. Then, it was time to discuss payment and insurance, all that good feeling went away. As a cavit, I thought my surgery was covered my insurance, so when I saw how much I had to pay out of pocket, it took my off guard. She did a terrible job explaining the charges or trying to ease my stress tears (a lot of tears). It was the first and only time I ever felt like a dollar sign and not a patient. I would recommend Dr. Rothenberg, but he needs better staff around him. Every bit of manner and ease he worked hard to put me in, was quickly taken away by an aggressive sales person. read more

Where to begin with my experience at DC Surgical Arts. I went there for a wisdom tooth extraction consultation upon my dentist's referral (I've since told them to reconsider referring patients here). The front desk staff is rude, a common thread in reviews here, but that isn't a big deal to me. What is a big deal is that they charged me $110 for the consultation, and $250 for a CT scan. Now, I see that Dr. Tien responds to all financial/insurance complaints here with the same response: it totally depends on what your insurance is willing to cover/ we can only provide estimates/ blah blah. Sure, I can follow that reasoning in some cases. But you want to know how I know this is total bullshit in my experience? The next surgeon I saw for a second opinion actually used my insurance, rendering the consultation completely free of charge. After speaking on the phone with my insurance company, I uncovered that DC Surgical Arts did not even attempt to use my insurance for the consult. As many of you probably know (wish I had), most major dental insurance companies cover one wisdom tooth consultation. SO THAT SUCKED. $360 down the drain to a place I would never allow to operate on me. On to that. Dr. Tien recommended a biopsy of a "cyst" that would cost me $1,000 out of pocket (not covered by my insurance). After seeing another surgeon, talking to my dentist, and doing my own research using my X-rays, I realized that that was complete bullshit (notice a theme here?). He even said it could be cancerous in an attempt to scare me into shelling out the $1K for the biopsy. What he called a "cyst" was really just a shadow where debris was getting stuck (gross I know) due to my impacted wisdom teeth. I have since had the wisdom teeth extraction at another practice, and once the tooth was removed the surgeon cleaned this area well and voila - the shadow was completely gone in my follow-up X-ray. I even told the surgeon exactly what Dr. Tien said and she laughed and explained in scientific detail what was actually going on (hint - not at all what Dr. Tien had told me). Additionally, Dr. Tien recommended getting a coronectomy for my bottom two teeth due to how close they were to my nerve. Dr. Tien clearly did not have confidence in his ability to remove the teeth without severely damaging the nerve (something he should have been able to do imo). The second surgeon I saw informed me that if we did the coronectomy, the open wounds would continually get infected and there would be a less than 1% chance the roots would grow up and away from the nerve - something that Dr. Tien all but assured me would happen over time. So, either Dr. Tien is a professional scammer, or he is a terrible surgeon. Not sure which is worse tbh. Regardless, he is someone I would never trust to operate on me. Side note - the procedure went perfectly well with the surgeon I ended up using, with zero complications. Could not be happier I cancelled my upper wisdom teeth extractions and bottom teeth coronectomy with DC Surgical Arts - especially since everything would have cost me close to $2,000. TLDR; I do not trust Dr. Tien's surgical abilities based on the bullshit he fed me during my wisdom teeth extraction consultation; the front staff is rude/incompetent and did not use my insurance for the consult, when they absolutely should have (costing me $360 instead of $0); one star for the nice saltwater fish tank to get acquainted with in the waiting lobby (especially thoughtful of them since Dr. Tien was 30 minutes late for my consultation). read more

He not only is a very skilled and fine oral surgeon, which is quite obvious, he is the Nicest man, quite cheerful. I am a patient of Dr. Tien at DC Surgical Arts, and recently had four wisdom teeth removed. Two teeth were impacted, and embedded quite deeply into the jaw bone. I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Tien and the practice. First and foremost, they took exceptional care of me and my health at every stage from consult to surgery, operation to post-op recovery, including in the days and week that followed. Maria at the front desk is efficient and responsive. Paulina is highly experienced and answered every question thoroughly. Dr. Tien is smart, thoughtful, and was very responsive to my needs. He explained the complexities of the surgery, potential risks and probabilities of various outcomes, and the healing process in a straightforward and intelligent manner. He is easy-going and has an excellent beside manner. The facilities are spotless and modern. I received general and local anesthesia without issue and picked up my meds from the practice (though I could have gotten them from my pharmacy). It's been a week since my operation and I'm healing well. I know this because I had a conversation by phone on day 1 with Dr. Tien and Paulina, and had a check in with them today. Sidebar: The surgery itself is intense and requires sufficient recovery time. I was not out shopping two days later like some friends who did their wisdom teeth extractions in college had described to me. I thought I had a high pain threshold but this has been (and is still) beyond. Follow the instructions carefully and you will reduce significantly your chances of dry sockets. read more

I was very happy with Dr. Tien, Dr. Rothenberg, and the entire staff. Their office is impressive and state of the art, and they're an exceptionally warm, competent, caring team. I had an unusual experience because my wisdom teeth were deeply embedded and I ended up getting an abscess. But they were completely on top of it. Dr. Tien met me after hours at the office multiple evenings, and as soon as it was clear I had an infection, he rushed me right to the hospital and drained the abscess himself (at 3 am!). He not only runs a busy private practice but is an attending physician at a major hospital, but he was extremely responsive by phone and text message over the weeks that followed. He's also just a great guy -- warm and caring, a fantastic bedside manner. So I certainly wouldn't wish my experience on anyone -- but it was no fault of DC Surgical Arts, and I'm grateful that I was in their care during the ordeal. (Also, to reassure anyone who is about to get wisdom teeth removed, I should add that I went into this knowing that I had some weird tooth and mouth issues. Getting an abscess is extremely rare. In fact, I was apparently the first patient of theirs who ever had that happen.) P.S. I was just told by my company's HR department that I needed a doctor's note to confirm that I was out for a week for health reasons. I emailed DC Surgical Arts and got back the note I needed within half an hour. All in all, if you have to go through a painful, complicated wisdom-tooth extraction, do it with Dr. Tien and company! An emergency situation I chose them for their proximity . After having a bait and switch done on me ( Tien to Rothenberg) I underwent for the 2 procedures I needed. The prices were double the normal rate for what I had done. I was billed for a service I did not receive and the PAIN......yeow!!!!! IF I were Dr Tien I would be angry at his staff and partner.
