I went to this bar on May 4th at about 8pm and gave the bartender my debit card to open a tab but told him I would pay all cash at the end. When he gave me the final bill with my card I handed him the cash for the total amount plus the tip for great service. Come to find out that he charged my card for the total amount. After a chill 6 years between both of my sisters attending UI, I can firmly say that I've never had a bad night at DC's. This tri-level establishment has delicious brews and while it can get pretty packed, it's always a good time if you're there with your friends. Watch out for their specials - some nights they have deals with steins where you can get a gigantic glass of some IPA or heavy beer at 8 or 9 percent. I will admit that it helps if you have connections behind the bar - as some friends always have to give some "test" concoctions to their friends to test whether a certain mix of booze will appeal to the masses. If you attend the University of Iowa, definitely stop by DC's to meet new friends, experience the UI college life, and make memories that you will never be able to replicate in the real world. DC's is an awesome spot for LUNCH! Yes, you read correctly. They've got some awesome menu items that are often slept on. They also have affordable drink options in the day time and also later at night if you're in the mood. I went to DC's during March Madness when Iowa was still in the tournament so this review is a bit dated. I've been coming to DC's since I was in college so I'm no stranger to what it beholds. They've got some awesome burgers that I would say are top 3 when it comes to Iowa City bar food. The serving sizes are a bit much. They've got a fry platter that's pretty difficult to finish in one sitting unless you have the drunchies. I would say just about everything on their menu is damn good. I'm not a huge fan of how small the downstairs area is but they also have an upstairs which isn't always open during the weekday. Other than that it's a chill spot to grab lunch! read more

Weird and aggressive behavior from the staff. One of the managers, Riley, opened the bathroom door and told me I needed to get out of the bathroom while I was on the toilet. She must've thought I was doing something wrong but I can't imagine what I possibly could have been doing. It was entirely unwarranted and humiliating. Riley is rude, predetorial, and incompetent. We love going to DC's, mostly for the great deals. For example, Monday nights 7pm-10pm you can get endless wings for $6 and they have $4 HUGE steins of beer! One of my favorite things to order are the loaded fries--so good! DC's is also a fun place to hang out and meet up with friends. Now for the cons... Some ppl may not care, but it bothers me that the bathrooms are usually pretty gross/ not kept clean. Also, DC's has a $3 deal for "burger baskets" on one night, but it's limited to just the "Basket Burger" (a certain burger), and they don't make that clear...we learned by see our bill after ordering other burgers. Finally, the food in general is all very average. All that being the case, DC's is still a great place to try for yourself, especially if you're looking for a place to watch a game w/ friends. read more

As a college student, DC's is a normal Place for undergrads to go. Until this year I was a fan. In the three weeks Iv been back for the school year I was charged 10 dollars extra on my card TWICE, and the bouncer told me to "get a thinner, more believable fake" when it was my real ID AND then let me in. Fuck this place- in addition to the shitty drinks and service, I was charged illegally an additional $10 on top of the $10 minimum. I signed a receipt for a total of $6.36 and left a $3.64 tip and was returned my debit card- a gin and tonic, and a shot - this morning, my account was charged $20 by these fuckheads. I have the receipt and will be bringing it in but I have low hopes for what it is they will do for me. I am shocked and appalled and very upset that I was ripped off and it upsets me to know that I was the target of it, and that more than likely, I am not the only one. read more

Rude, mean, and unprofessional waitstaff. My friend accidentally bumped into a waitress (Alex). He ended up spilling one of the drinks she was carrying. He apologized. Then she deliberately poured a drink on his head. I saw the event and told her that her reaction was uncalled for. She responded by having me thrown out the bar. In the afternoons DC's offers great affordable food - pizzas, soups, sandwiches, etc. and homemade chips. During the day they have huge beers and at night they have alcohol discounts. Surrounded by flat screen TVs you can watch any sports game up close. read more

I cant believe I am even writing this review since I have never reviewed anything before on yelp. I used to love DCs and tell my friends to rent out the top floor for their birthdays. Today I was accosted and berated with profanity's by the boy checking my ID with a mustache for my "clearly fake" ID even though I am beyond legal age. I then purchased a drink and took a seat outside. I accidentally spilled my (first) drink when getting excited about the clippers game. I was grabbed by the shoulder by the same boy who accosted me earlier, once again berating me with profanities and was told I had to leave. I am beyond disappointed with my treatment at this bar. I did not do anything to be kicked out and was not treated fairly. I think the boy checking IDs was intoxicated. I believe his name was Adam. Not to mention the overpriced drinks with cheap liquor. I will not be returning to this bar and I hope I am able to keep as many people from coming here as I can. Don't waste your money at this place ever. read more

My favorite bar in Iowa City - especially on weeknights. The staff at dc's is absolutely amazing - to the point where they've become a part of my friend group. The patio is perfect for a nice summer day. I watched all the Hawkeye football games at dc's. $3 burger baskets on Thursday are also major key. The only downside are the high prices on football Saturday's, however, that's to be expected out of most bars in Iowa City. read more

Fun bar but at some points it gets too packed. The place to be if you're watching the Blackhawks play. They have pretty decent specials on fish bowls and have huge steins. If you need to go to the bathroom don't. The bathrooms are worse than a truck stop. read more

Stopped in here for drinks and apps before the Beach House show at the local theater. It was pretty dead on a Sunday afternoon, but they had drink specials like $5 long islands. The appetizers we ordered- fried pickles, nachos, and a turkey burger - were all pretty good bar food, and the servings were massive. Awful service. Walked in with no one in there. They didn't have any staff besides a cook in the back. They didn't come to the table for 40 minutes. My beer was handed to me half full, and the beer was stale. Talked with the manager who refused to believe the beer was stale. Grabbed a cup drank out of it and tried handing it to me to taste. Manager refused to give a refund. He was also washing the plastic cups, presumably from the night before, to reuse again. Extremely terrible experience. read more

Cool place reminds me of College!

I hate this place. Come here if you love getting pushed and shoved through the bar by a bunch of bros. The only time I enjoyed this place was in the summer time on the patio when I was drinking fish bowls with my friends, but that was only up until I got served a dirty fish bowl with someone else's chewed gum in it. If it's not busy and you want to watch a game and get some bar food--fine. But at night time it is the worst. The set up is terrible--you are basically just standing in a circle around a bunch of tables that are surely already occupied by the afore mentioned bros. Also, the staff is rude. Last night one of the blonde girls working the beer tub by the door shoved me and yelled "Get out! Get the f*** out!" all while classily flipping me the bird. I don't know her, and did nothing to warrant that behavior--I was literally just walking out the door. With so many options for bars in this town, I see no reason to come back to this nasty place. Yelp needs to make negative number an option to properly rate this place. It is an old Burger King they have simply painted the walls a dark green or black and converted the food ordering area to a bar. It is disgustingly dirty, I can not imagine any woman in the world wanting to set foot in this place let alone one of the most disgusting bathrooms you will ever find. Only people in the place seem to be friends of the servers and bartenders and are robbing the owners of this place blind with free beer and shots. These folks seem to think their names are on the title of the business they way they walk around acting like they own the place. It is a dump and the actual owners should be embarrassed by every aspect of this place and should also review camera's to see how bad they are being ripped off by their employees. DC's is fine in the afternoons if you have a Cub's game on or Sunday football. Then they have specials. Their happy hour really isn't...no food specials and okay beer specials. I went there last Wednesday and I sat at the bar. Not one person waited on me and I waited for awhile.
