What a great place to enjoy some food, learn about cooking and sip some vino! We went to the evening cooking school and had a wonderful time. The staff do a wonderful job looking after you. I really recommend getting there early so you can do some leisurely wine tasting before the meal begins. We were late getting started as there was still a line-up at the wine bar at 6:30. Once they were done the show began. Anna does a great job of talking through the dishes with good little tips here and there. Having said that the 'lesson' on the dessert was a bit disappointing as all we got was a talk, i.e. no demonstration. So like the cake that was served, we found that section a bit dry. We had four courses counting dessert and the pasta (farfalle in lemon cream) was the star. Fresh, hot and exploding with taste. The pizza with bocconcini and fresh basil would have been great if it was hot and had fresh basil. It was tasty but unfortunately had been sitting there for sometime as it was less than warm. The stuffed pork was okay but I found my meat almost dry and the filling was a bit thin, especially compared to the excellent demo by Chef Mike. The vegetarian dish was a stuffed eggplant which was exploding with flavour. The potato & zucchini bake was a hit and will be the first recipe we try at home! Dessert, so so. The cake as stated was a bit dry and lacked any real depth of flavour. Overall an excellent evening with some ups and downs with the food. The visit to the store was a fun way to end the evening. read more

I haven't been here in a while as la Grotta is my go-to place so I just discovered De Lucas has gone through some renovations. Nothing major but enough to spruce up the store. Place is packed on Saturdays so be patient in the meat and cheese section at the back of the store. They carry a good selection of cheeses but I'd say La Grotta has a wider selection. There's a lot of prepared pasta, pizzas and even canned items by DeLucas. Lots of olive oils, coffee, pasta, olives, spices and other good stuff. There's even a small section that sells kitchen items. If you're hungry, there's a casual eatery upstairs that sells pasta and pizza. Downside is that the grocery store is not linked directly inside to De Luca's Wine Store and that the De Lucas gift card is NOT applicable in the wine store. WTF. Something about how the wine store is associated with the grocery store but has some shareholders. read more

went for lunch and my how things there changed. The prices have soared so much. The lunch buffet has gone up $5.00. A slice of pizza is also $5.00. The spicy spaghetti was dripping in a pool of olive oil penne alfredo had no taste. On top of that they gave us stale bread pieces when I asked for butter it is .10 extra no parm for pasta it is also extra. When has anyone gone to a restaurant and paid extra for butter and parm for your pasta? This used to be my go to place on Saturdays. Never again. Very disapointed. read more

Just recently discovered that they roast their own coffee beans. Pretty good selection too. Beans from Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Kenya. Prices are quite good as well, most varieties start at $10.45 per pound. Only decaf was a bit too pricey, going for over $22 per pound. The store was surprisingly large on the inside. I walked in expecting a tiny grocery store and found myself in a supermarket. So many things, I really didn't have time to explore it all. I'll be checking it out again. read more

I love De Luca's, it's definitely the best grocery store in the West-End. I seriously never go anywhere else for cheese; the quality and selection is excellent, you can buy any quantity and the prices are decent on most types. Even though it's a specialty store they still have a wide-range of basic ingredients which almost makes it a one-stop shop for most of your grocery needs. I also like the fact that the staff is always super friendly and will never hesitate to show you where something is or give information on their products. Some items in the store are a little pricey so be a bit selective, but all in all it's a must stop before venturing into making an Italian dinner. read more

I was at De Luca's cooking studio for a private event tonight. The studio was quite nice. I was impressed with the set up and layout of it! De Luca's did a cooking demonstration for the group of 80 of us before serving each of the 3-course meal. I really enjoyed the idea that the De Luca's doesn't operate solely for the purpose of making money, it operates because the owner/team truly are passionate about their Italian cuisine and they want to take this opportunity to pass down their culinary skills. I had a fantastic time at De Luca's! The food was okay but I absolutely love the idea that it offers cooking demonstration as a group activity! It makes a great ice breaker for a networking event! If you're looking for a place to host a private event, I would highly recommend De Luca's! read more

They say first impressions are important and the hardest to change... My initial foray into DeLuca's this afternooon was great. The smell as I walked in the door was killer (don't go on an empty stomach, or maybe do?!). Walking through i was really impressed with the selections. It didn't take long to fill my cart and I said often "oh I'll have to come back again to get that". I finally made it to the bakery area and omg I was salivating! I picked a little of just about everything and made note of what I planned to get next time. Then I witnessed the worst customer service in quite some time. The lady ahead of me was getting different pastries and the woman helping her had packaged them up. For whatever reason, she had used several styrofoam take out containers and one small clear container. Well, the slices were too tall so she mushed the lid down. This of course annoyed the customer (at almost $4 a slice, presentation is important) the woman walked away as I was getting my desserts (in one clear container tall enough not to smash the slices) and the customer turns and asks why she wasn't given such a container. Said she was really unhappy as these were for a dinner and now stuck to the lid. The young girl serving me was about to say something when the other woman came around the corner. The customer asked her why she gave her 4 containers and smashed the slices. The woman then said "give me your stuff and I'll put it in another tray so you can stop your whining! I was a bit taken aback. Of course the customer retorted and they ended up arguing back and forth... with several of us standing there. It was really the low note on what had been an impressive first visit. I expect that if I am paying good money for pretty desserts, then I'll get pretty desserts. I don't expect anyone to be called a whiner for wanting the quality they pay for. I was disappointed as now my thought is, no matter how great your shop is, some of your staff sucks. I would have given five stars but I can't, customer service is as important as everything else in your shop. read more

I used to live near this place and would go multiple times a week. They have an excellent selection of cheese, meats and cold cuts. One of the few things I miss about Winnipeg are the rib eye steaks from de Luca's... I honestly haven't found anything comparable since - so thick and tasty. read more

I first bought here in the seventies, and I still go back. Occasionally, I drive to Winnipeg just to shop at DeLucas. I live in Fargo, ND so you know how serious I am. Their selections of cheeses and sausages is probably reason enough to shop there, but if they sold nothing but their bread, I would still go. Often we buy the take out lasagna, it was a small pan but we remember it as quite layered and delicious. It looked different, but didn't think much of that. Was shocked that the pan was marked as 750 g on the label as there wasn't much there, not much cheese on top, pretty sparse, at the cash it came up as $17, well I just about fell over. I should have returned it. It was terrible, the layers were two layers of noodles, light sauce, the cheese on top disappeared with the cooking. WOW ! NOTHING like the other take home lasagnas in past. De Luca's we won't be back, that was a blatant rip off. I've been a De Luca's patron for over 20 years, no more. read more

The specialty part of the store is great. The cheese and meat section is one of the best in the city. Both are pricey, but that is to be expected when you are talking about the best of the best. However, there is a lot of regular stuff in the store that is quite overpriced. I was shocked at the price a few of the less exciting things I picked up. The produce is also more costly than you can find elsewhere. Good for specialty items, and the bakery always seems reasonable. Just hit the supermarket for your basics. read more
