Admission is free so roam around and definitely do make the effort all the way to 10th Ave. It's so worth it. I don't think I've ever felt frightened at an art gallery before but at the Jack Shainman Gallery I did. I was the only one wandering through the gallery and I was face to face with the art of Bharti Kher. They say art can move you. Kher's art makes such a statement and is so powerful I was literally breathless at times and took brave steps towards her sculptures of an oversized whale heart, an almost life like elephant, and a wolf. Kher experiments with porportions with her tree, bindi art, and chair sculpture. At times I felt like I was Alice in Wonderland. Kher dares to push the envelope, open your eyes to another world, and connect through culture, soul, and imagery. This is her first exhibition at the Jack Shainman Gallery and it only runs through Dec. 22.

Cheim and Reade is new to me but I instantly liked the set up of the space. It is on the edge of 25th street in Chelsea. And there is a simple sign baring the name of the gallery. When walking in there's a small reception desk and a shelf with art books. Then a small room with a cool lay out of some McGee's more sculpture work. I loved his use of found objects, color and especially texture. In the larger room there was a tiny built side room that appeared like a small town shop. When you enter the room it's reminiscent of a teenage boy's club house. A variety of art is on the wall and there's a shelf of knick knacks. Is this the room that represents the brain of the artist? That's the beauty about art, a lot of it is interpretation. There was a back room where the giant stack of surfboards leaves you in awe. It appears as a giant stair case. Absolutely stunning. The show is up until February 17th and is worth the trip to the crevices of Chelsea. To get an intro to McGee's work I recommend watching the documentary "Beautiful Losers".

I have been coming to this gallery even before I lived in NY. This show was the perfect teaser before the big Brooklyn Museum show. When I arrived I was coming in at the same time as the famous rock n roll photographer Mick Rock. As we made our way up the stairs another famous photographer was spotted, Bob Gruen. Both had some exquisite pieces in the show. It was jam packed in the gallery and I definitely had to move some peeps out of the way to get the full Bowie experience. I loved that there was photos I had never seen before. I loved the ones in bright colors! And also the play on form like the dog with Bowie. There was a tour bus photo but it reminded me of taking night trains in Europe. These photographs transported you on the Bowie journey. I adored the photograph of Bowie walking away with the iconic thunderbolt on his back from Lynn Goldsmith! Bowie is one to make an entrance and an exit and always leaves an impression. He is missed by many and he will always hold a special part of NY's heart. I would recommend popping in while the show is up and there's less butts to move! I also noticed I missed a couple cool book events so I will be keeping my eyes peeled for future shows and special guests.

My wife and I dropped in while checking out art galleries in Lenox hill. While we were there, the gallery was featuring Jorg Immendorf. Jorg is a provocateur with a childlike style and voice that I'm sure is interesting to some people. But we found most of his work dull and uninspired, and had trouble connecting with it. If I'm in the area again with some time to kill, I may stop in again to give this place another shot. But if you're looking for a great art gallery in Lenox Hill, I'd recommend the Opera Gallery of the Venus over this one.

I really enjoyed this exhibit since it was more akin to visiting a museum. The collection of art on display was ornate and visually beautiful, depicting the Middle Ages (religious overtones). I'm not sure how long this exhibit will run for, but it is worth checking out.
