This wonderful spot close to the Vatican is highly rated for many great reasons. First, this seems to be a legitimate local spot, but yet we (super obvious tourists) were received with a very nice welcome. Our server was crazy busy, but still went out of his way to provide us excellent service. The food is incredible. Fried calamari and red prawns are a must order! Ambiance is very romantic and although the tables are fairly close to each other, you don't feel crowded at all. Although I rarely order a pizza without meat, I loved my porcini pizza! It was quite large, but who doesn't love leftover pizza! Love this place!

Nice little restaurant. It's very close to the Vatican. We found it easily, it's close to St. Peter's Basilica. I'm not sure which other sites it may be closer to. There are a ton of tourists here, and I visited in the off season. The waiter was pleasant and knew enough English to communicate the menu, which we appreciated. We started with porcini bruschetta, it was good, not seasoned much. A good dish if you just want to enjoy the flavor of the mushrooms. I then had the tartare. They asked if I wanted an egg in it, which of course I replied in the affirmative. It was tasty. The egg was a very nice egg. The portion of meat was good. It came with a bit of toast and arugula. It was about 20 euros. Gnocchi with Gorgonzola was ordered by my wife, she enjoyed it very much. I had a bite and it was delicious. This plate was about 10 euros. She also ordered the house red. It was very good and 6 euros. It's not a Michelin Star restaurant, but five stars for being good at what they do.

The perfect place for lunch or dinner when you're by the Vatican. The food, which was delicious and affordable, and service was fantastic! We sat outdoors, which was clean and very comfortable in mid March, especially with the heat lamp. 10/10

A bottle of Chiani and two glasses; a warm day and an English menu. Perfect!

It was great finding this Oasis just 150 meters from the vatixan exit.. After spending hours walking, it was a welcome, friendly, place to sit and have bevetage.

We loved the Brunello and the tortellini but everything else was just okay incl. the service.

We came here based on the reviews and the experience we had was just okay. The food was just okay. Our apartment from AB&B is located in Piazza Navona so maybe I am being a bit unfair to compare De Penitenzieri with the places we've been dining at near our place. We sat in the corner of the crowded restaurant which was fine and if it's crowded one would presume it must be really good right? Meh. The starters for us were onion soup, asparagus soup and the caprese salad. Soups were bland and watery 2*s. The caprese salad with buffalo mozzarella ...a good 4*s. The hubby and I shared the Boars meat ragu it was good, meat was tender a 4* dish as well. Vegetarian pizza was okay. Tortellini with prosciutto was the winner. Add the wine, a 2010 Brunello and that gave this place the extra third star. Otherwise this was a 2 star I've definitely had better. Service was friendly but sparse. I wouldn't really go out of my way to return here.

Fantastic place to stop by after visiting St. Peter's. It's just a few steps away from the main road leading to the Basilika and much less busy than the touristy places all along there. The interior is a charming wine bar with bottles around all walls. The staff is super friendly and the service very quick. My pappardelle with wild boar ragu where fantastic, the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was silly and rich with a wonderful gamy taste.

I first visited this restaurant in 2012 while visiting family in Rome. It was only down the street from my lodging and I remember loving the quaint atmosphere and lovely waiters. 5 years later, I ran into this restaurant again while visit the Vatican and it brought back so many memories! I loved this place so much that I visited it three times during my three-day visit to Rome this year! Breakfast: - Stop by here if you need breakfast before starting the day. You can get a "cornetto" (croissant) and "caffee" (espresso) for 3 euros. Eat it standing at the bar like any other Italian would and enjoy the best part about Italian breakfast. One day I ventured and got a cappuccino and it was equally delicious so I recommend that as well. My friend is vegan and surprisingly they had vegan croissant options! She was really happy about it and commented that they were excellent. We stopped at De Penitenzieri every day for breakfast since it was conveniently on our way out to the city and we were always happy to see many Italians in and out of the shop. Lunch: - Since this is a typical bar in Italy, it also has lunch options. We stopped by for lunch on our last day since we needed food for the train back to Milan. We opted for sandwiches that were already made, some chips and water. Total per person was about 5 euros, which you can't beat. Dinner: - We only ate here once for dinner but we were not disappointed! I got the spaghetti carbonara (which is a must if you are in Rome) and my friend got a vegan pasta dish that was tomatoes and basil. I preferred my dish over hers (cheese simply belongs on pasta) but both were enjoyable and the wine selection was great. Went the house white wine and it definitely hit the spot. The complimentary bruschetta to start our meal was also a nice touch. We had great service and I already look forward to visiting again, even if it is in 5 years!

We stopped in for food and wine after spending many hours at Vatican City museums. We were hungry and tired. Our waiter Matteo did us a favor and ordered us our food. Each dish was a fun surprise, but absolutely delicious. De Penitenzien Wine Bar is quiant and intimate. A very enjoyable experience.

Perfect little, very little, dining room surrounded by wine bottles and good waiters.

5 stars for atmosphere. 4 stars for staff. 3 stars for food. The lasagna was fantastic! The pizza pretty good. The pasta was meat sauce was not tasty. Enjoyed a cold beer, lemon soda and our fun waiter. We were one of the lucky few to get a table in this very intimate dining room surrounded by wine bottles. Just lucky timing it appears. One of my favorite little dining room memories. And the price was right. Total bill for 3 entrees and three drinks was 37€.

Great service and great food and prices. We are from USA and we're tired of scammers and bad service. After coming here we became more in love with Italy. The owner was very helpful and took 5 minutes out of his time to help us find a shopping center. Very great establishment!

Great pasta and incredible selection of wine. Had the past with wild bore and it was fantastic. The Waite staff was authentic and very friendly and prompt.

Genuine place steps from the Vatican. We had to wait 15 mins even though we were doing lunch at 3 PM. Worth the wait.

We ordered sea bass fillet rolled in zucchini and honey mushrooms. Fish was tender, soft, and delicious with great seasoning. We also ordered Ravioli with white truffles and it was delicious as well. Ravioli tasted like it was freshly made and it tasted great with truffles. Lastly, we got tiramisu for dessert. This tiramisu was prepared by an artist. Just by looking at the dish, it was very pretty to look at. It was presented on a beautiful plate with thin chocolate cookie on top with sugar decoration and underneath was a creamy white tiramisu. I loved this dish because it was unique dessert with great sweet flavor and great presentation. The service was excellent. Everyone was friendly with great attitude and they are attentive. I think they liked the look on my face every time they brought out the dishes because their presentation was great. Whoever was the Chef that night, I would give him or her an award. This restaurant was unique just like Rome. Highly recommended!

We opted for the Roman-style cuisine tasting menu with wine pairings. The service was warm and welcoming, and the ambiance was quiet and romantic. I appreciated the decor, especially the various wine bottles displayed throughout, and I also liked the dishes the food was served on. That said, this restaurant leaned a little too "foodie" for my taste. I also discovered that I really dislike truffles! My husband, on the other hand, enjoyed everything--including my leftovers. The wines were fantastic across the board. I also want to mention the pricing was shockingly affordable for what we got at dinner, which again, included the wine pairing. If you consider yourself a foodie and enjoy creative, thoughtfully prepared dishes, Ristorante Ad Hoc is worth a visit.

This place was so incredible, we went TWICE during our 3 day stay in Rome!…read more We had tried the other "super famous" Italian sandwich spot earlier in our trip and it did NOT deliver. Pane e Salame, however, was delicious!!!! On our first day in Rome, my husband and I decided to search for a lunch spot nearby (we were staying near the Trevi fountain), and I found this place had pretty good reviews. We got there about an hour after it opened and requested a seat outdoors. They have a tiny patio across from their entrance, but they fit quite a bit of people in it! We initially wanted to order two sandwiches to try more items, but I'm glad we just shared one - they were big and filling! We also had the small charcuterie board to share which was plenty of food for us both. We shared a bottle of rose, and all in all, we paid under $50 (usd) - what a steal! This was the perfect first meal in Rome. The food was incredibly fresh, the service was great, and the outdoor seating allowed us to experience the streets of Rome. 10/10 - would absolutely go back.

Our sandwiches were cut in half and one half was big enough to make the average person full. We got five sandwiches for only about €30! The place was not a tourist trap, but i have to say, the seats at the booth were uncomfortable to me, and the place was a bit small. Sorry i do not have photos. But overall, I would recommend to go here.

Went here for the music, was completely blown away by everything this place had to offer…read more For starts the sushi was easily some of the best sushi I have ever had, it was simple but every ingredient was fresh and thought through. The edamame we had was soft and boiled/spiced to perfection. Originally we were just going to get a roll and a bowl but after trying the food we immediately got another roll. The staff was a whole new level of mind blowing. To start the waiter made us feel exactly where we belonged (even though we were a little underdressed for a classier restaurant). You could've just sat there and watched the bar tender all night, she looked like she was a professional I wouldn't want anyone else making me drinks. The atmosphere of the whole bar embodied a classic American jazz bar, even the other people and tables we were by were friendly and really added to the whole experience. Was very well worth the price and couldn't recommend any other restaurant.

A jazz club for American tourists…read more Okay, there was one Australian lady and a few Chinese. Everyone else was American. Prices are sky-high because this is a soak the tourist situation. Alexanderplatz which is the premiere jazz club in Rome charges $18 euros for a month membership - no cover after that - and $12 per drink. So once you have paid your monthly cover charge, you can hear all the jazz you want for free - or if need be for $12 euros a drink At Alexanderplatz, the performances are legendary with some of the most innovative and technically amazing musicians in Rome. We dropped over $150 euros at Gregory's. We got a perfectly reasonable yeoman guitarist. But nothing like the artistic lions that routinely perform over at Alexanderplatz. Now to be fair, we had dinner at Gregory's and we never eat at Alexanderplatz. The standard "sushi dinner" was perfectly reasonable yeoman sushi. There was so little of it that we both had to order a la carte dishes afterwards. The extra extras seriously expanded the final tab. * * * One argument in Gregory's favor: their bar is extraordinary. The bar at Alexanderplatz is mediocre. Gregory's charges top dollar for its bar offerings, but what they mix and what is in their bottles is worth every single euro they ask for. I would be perfectly happy to just go to the bar, and order a few premium beverages. I would hear my wallet cry. But I would know that I was drinking supremely well in return for my investment. Fortunately, the bar is downstairs from the club. I would not have to put up with the shenanigans in the club. * * * The problem with the club is the crowd. At most, one third of the customers are actually there to listen to jazz. The room is filled with tourists taking selfies. There are also hot-daters playing snuggle-buns. Many of them will leave mid-set so they can go back to the hotel. Gregory's is less about the music and more about selling happy memories of Rome. * * * Alexanderplatz gets a mostly Italian crowd. You are looking as musicians, music critics, academics, and all purpose artsy types - as well as normal Italian human beings who just want to hear fine music. The music is taken very very seriously. Yeah, there are usually two or three tables with good time Charlies who are doing the phone recording, party hearty thing. But this is 8% of the audience at Alexanderplatz as opposed to 70% of the audience at Gregory's. To be fair to the crowd at Gregory's, the music at Alexanderplatz is simply better. The jazz at Alexanderplatz is capable of transfixing even philistines with tin ears. Gregory's jazz doesn't put that much on the table. But the crowd at Alexanderplatz sets me up for listening to mystic, complex music with the highest level of attention and aesthetic receptiveness. The crowd at Gregory's just gets me irritated. * * * If you are in Rome with a hot date, go to Gregory's. Be prepared to shell out the bucks. * * * If you are in Rome with someone who can truly appreciate once-in-a-lietime musical experiences, take them to Alexanderplatz. After you talk about the music for half an hour after the concert, You can still go back to the hotel. Just figure that the hotel will be the second best part of the night.
