One of the most storied venues in college basketball, the Dean Smith Center (or the 'Dean Dome' as it's affectionately known) is a modern-day cathedral to the sport, where Tar Heel legends like Kenny Smith, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse and Tyler Hansbrough held court. The rafters are home to a collection of jerseys that could make up the roster for an NBA Legends team, featuring names like Jordan, Worthy, Perkins and Jamison, along with the coach for whom the building is named -- the legendary Dean E. Smith. With a capacity of nearly 22,000, it's one of the largest venues in college hoops, and there's rarely an empty seat in the house when the Heels are playing. The energy here is indescribable -- from the electric pregame festivities to the halftime show, it's one of the best experiences in all of college sports. In 2025, the University of North Carolina began discussions about replacing the 40-year old Dean Dome with a new arena, either elsewhere on campus or at Carolina North, a planned satellite campus a few miles north in Chapel Hill. But while the Dome's aging roof and narrow concourses support a credible argument for a replacement, it's hard to imagine the UNC campus without it. I had a blast at my first Tar Heels game ever. When we arrived, we parked in one of the commuter lots and took the Tar Heel Express in. It was advertised as three dollars one-way or five dollars two way, but they didn't charge us that night which was pretty awesome. Also, parking is free after 6 PM. If you Google "TarHeel Express" the info will come up for how to park this easily. We got bussed in with no wait and hit the concessions. Most items are priced at around seven dollars, which isn't bad for a sporting event. There is no alcohol which totally makes sense given that this is a college. I got soda and some pretzels, which were totally average. They were very efficient with the food and payments. We had nosebleed seats near center court and they were actually fantastic. We could still see the game quite well and were able to see all the action. Around this time of year, they offer promotions for inexpensive seats because the students are leaving for break. So, we got our tickets for $11 each. Also, the seats were comfortable and not too tight. They had lots of little entertaining moments with the pep squad, the cheerleaders, and a little halftime show that featured pogo stick experts. Overall, I had such a great time. Even non-basketball fans will have a great time. read more

I went to the Dean Dome for a UNC vs. Wake Forest men's basketball game. While I'm not a fan of Carolina, I'm a lifelong college basketball fan and can respect the history UNC basketball. The school has six national championships, great coaches, and countless players who've gone on to have successful pro careers. Growing up in North Carolina, the Heels were a big deal. Admittedly, I was part of the ABC (Anybody But Carolina) club, so I wasn't thrilled being surrounded by Carolina blue and white, but the facility was cool. The Smith Center is the ACC's third biggest basketball arena with a seating capacity of 21,750. It's behind Syracuse's Carrier Dome, which has a capacity of 35,642 for basketball, and Louisville's KFC Yum! Center, which has a capacity of 22,090. Unlike many other NCAA Division I basketball and NBA arenas around the country, the Smith Center was designed specifically with basketball in mind. It's the biggest college home arena I've been in, though NC State's PNC Arena, which isn't far away, is close (19,722). At the time of writing this review, I'm a 15-year (consecutive) season ticket holder to Georgia Tech men's basketball games. Our arena, McCamish Pavilion, seats only 8,600 and we have only a handful of sellouts a year. Compared to what I'm used to, the Dean Dome feels big and cavernous, more like an NBA arena. I don't know if the game I went to was sold out, but it either was or close to it, and yet the atmosphere wasn't as loud nor as intense as I thought it was going to be. Our section in the lower level, which was filled with Carolina fans, was pretty tame. For college games, I think I prefer more intimate venues like McCamish which can get quite loud and intense when packed. The Smith Center opened in 1986. It's showing its age in several areas including the exterior (it looks dated) and the interior concourse areas. What I think is cool about the venue is it acts sort of like a museum to Carolina basketball with trophies, team photos, plaques, and even a bust of former head coach Dean Smith. Inside the arena, there are more banners and retired and "honored" jerseys (over 40 jerseys total) than I've seen hanging from the rafters of any other arena in any sport. It's kind of ridiculous. But the coolest thing to me are the four widescreen displays that hang in the four corners of the building. Their four corners display setup is unlike any I've seen. Speakers and the American and North Carolina state flags hang from the center of the translucent dome above. The Dean Dome is open to the public on weekdays, 8am-5pm, and the adjacent Carolina Basketball Museum (separate building) is open weekdays, 10am-4pm, and Saturday, 9am-1pm. We LOVED the Dean E. Smith. I brought my brother on an unofficial visit to UNC and he loved it. We arrived on the campus and toured the Men's Basketball Museum it was really cool. The staff there was really nice. We visited the Dean E. Smith Center but there was a game going on we just wanted to see it. The stadium was really nice and big it's different to see it without people inside of it. It was really clean I am sure because no one was there. There was staff member there cleaning up the halls and stuff and he stopped to talk to him he told us about UNC and the basketball players, we really happy that we ran into him. The parking was great there was an open parking lot right across from the Center. Overall nice Arena and I can't wait to go to a game there. read more

Affectionately known as "The Dean Dome", the Dean E. Smith Center is a near 30-year old multi-purpose arena named after the UNC's greatest coach & innovator, Dean Smith. It is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and fairly easy to find. It is also located next door to the Carolina Basketball Museum (a must-see). As storied as this arena is, tickets are really difficult to get here. If you are among the most fortunate to sit on the lower bowl, fantastic. Most of those that want to observe an ACC game, such as when my Wahoos come to town, usually sit in the higher sections. The best games to sit in the lower bowl are usually non-conference, when the Tarheels play against formidable opponents, such as the D-III Little Sisters of the Poor, and the Devry Institute Runnin' Geek Squad Pandas. Nonetheless, its kinda great to come here for a game. The student section can get rowdy at times, but you'll find that anywhere. In fact, the place reminds me of games at University Hall at UVA: rowdy in spurts, yet sorta ho hum, another blowout win over a bottom-tier ACC school. The Dean Dome doesn't have the close sort of environment that you'll easily find at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium, yet I think that this is by design to accommodate a very large student body + huge regional and national following of fans. Altogether, I'd certainly return, if I maintain the same hook up with tickets. read more

In full disclosure, I've been a volunteer usher here for many, many years. This is definitely a Tar Heel basketball mecca, with many championship banners and retired jerseys hanging in the rafters. Sightlines are generally pretty good, and the atmosphere seems to change from game to game. ACC games are always loud and raucous, but sometimes nonconference games can seem lackadaisical. In all honesty, the stadium is also showing its age. Some of the seat cushions are stained, and the aisles aren't always swept well. They keep changing the food options, and they aren't bad but you're still paying stadium prices. Tip: If you get to the games early, you can go down near the floor as the players are warming up. Just don't bug them for autographs or selfies, they're preparing for a game. read more

Thanks to Ron W. I saw my first UNC game at the Dean E. Smith Center {they won against Wake Forest--go TAR HEELS!} We arrived early for the game, parked off Rosemary ($4 for the entire time) for dinner and road the Express Bus ($5/person, round trip) directly in front of Carolina Cafe, to the stadium for drop-off in front of gate A. I really don't think there's a bad seat in the Stadium, although I'm sure the closer you get, the better. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I went to a college stadium to watch a game, but the experience here was great. My first shock: no adult bevies served?! I learned this is common at college stadiums. And while bags were "eye-checked" by students, I'm sure you'd be able to slip something inside if you're desperate. They do have a huge variety of food stands, although I didn't try any, I saw students eating popcorn, nachos and even chick-fi-A and dip'n'dots. Two things I noticed that are different from my post, professional stadium experiences: there's no jumbo-tron hanging from the middle of the ceiling, all the stats will be off to one side. Also, the student section is directly behind one of the goal posts (and no signs are allowed within the stadium). If you're a long-legged person, you might feel like you're in an airplane, there's not a plethora of leg space, and you'll have to sit on all your winter gear if it's in-season. read more

No I think I took it off too haha. It holds a few more thousands than the Thomas and Mack and has a lot of banners and jerseys hanging from the rafters. It's NICE I love it. Look I see MJ LOL If you're just visiting come on a day there aren't events in the center like a game. There as a row of parking meters in the parking lot across the street at Skipper Bowels Dr and Williamson Dr otherwise you will need a parking permit. $0.25 for 10 mins. If u want to indulged load that meter up with coins. There's also more meter parking by the Kenan Stadium. Don't forget to take a sip out of the Old Well which is said to give good luck. If coming from the parking lot along Skipper Bowels Dr don't work your way to the right around the center there's nothing to see. Left of the center is where you want to go. There's more to see. If the gate doors to the center are closed try the Basketball Offices doors, on the left of the center, this is where you will also find the trophies and championship rings. I think there's also a museum but the doors were locked. I'm not sure if this is open to everyone or if it was just my charm but if you want to take a peek of the court go in through the Basketball Offices (2nd floor) and take the elevators up the 3rd floor. According to the info on the elevator these floors are open to the public. Do not go down to the 1st floor that's the locker rooms and court floor OFF LIMITS if someone abuses this PRIVILEGE they'll probably stop opening up the center for us all. Not many places allow this I've tried. Also you can see the trophies and rings, how sweet is that. There's so much going on in here. I could just sit down in the seats and imagine watching all the UNC greats or a Duke vs UNC game. Facility wise I still love the Thomas and Mack Center of UNLV cause there's more features. But this is one of the best too. I would love to come back for a game. GO TAR HEELS!!! Well except when its against UNLV maybe it all depends on the situation LOL. read more

I was able to make a dream a reality. It wasn't during a game but was able to visit with my daughter. We were able to walk around. I got to talking to a guy that works their & realized he was from Iowa as well. He ended up giving me an extra shirt that he had laying around. I hope one day I will be able to return & cheer on my favorite basketball team but it was such a joy just to be in the home of our Tar Heels. I was lucky enough to get to see Carolina beat Duke at the Dean Dome on 3/4/17. We caught a bus over that dropped us off at the front door and took us back. Round trip was $5 and totally worth it. The atmosphere was great and voices truly carry throughout the Dome. It can get very loud. It was nice to have closer circuit TVs mounted throughout the lower level seats so we could get zoomed in footage of the action. Coming from a tall person, the seats were comfortable and leg room was fairly ample all things considered. If you take a bag, you have to be checked and have a wristband secured the the bag. The food wasn't anything especially fantastic, but it was what you would expect for stadium food. The restrooms were clean. read more

This arena is a mecca in the College Basketball World and the name Dean Smith, Hall of Fame coach holds so much presence. You get goosebumps when you walk in, even if there isn't even a game. So many national championships and ACC titles with banners all around. A court that looks prestigious with all its history and price Plus the acoustics here are some of the best in the country. This is a natural wonder if you are a basketball fan. You can hear the ghosts of players and coaches past. A must see if you make it to the UNC campus. read more

It's a nice arena. The food is okay, nothing to brag about. Howie's Pizza, Bojangles, popcorn, pretzels, limited Dip n Dots and Ben and Jerry's flavors, hot dogs, and nachos. They also have Makus and Big C's Chicken and Waffles (sure I'm missing something).The upper seats/nose bleeds have no leg room and it's not at enough incline to prevent tall people in the row ahead of you from blocking your few. The lower and middle level sets have more room and are wider. I would suggest for basketball games to opt for those seats, you have a better view and are more comfortable. I've been to the Smith Center several times to watch the live basketball games and watch parties. Most recently I watched the Hornets and Celtics. The experience was different because it was a mixed crowd and less of the college crowd in comparison to the UNC games. What really gets me to give the 4 star rating is the atmosphere. If you visit here during a game the energy is contagious. Almost EVERYONE is truly invested in the game. The student sections REALLY show their school spirit and it increases the energy of the crowd. There are cheers from tip off until the last basket. The crowd involvement is insane. Parking and traffic isn't too terrible. Parking is normally $10. It IS thousands of people so you will encounter traffic but the Tarheel express is also an option. $3 one way or $5 roundtrip. Be prepared to wait a little bit though but at least you don't have to worry about parking or driving in traffic AND you get dropped off and picked up right in front of the stadium. I think with better food and some revamping of the higher levels they could get a 5 star. read more

A great venue to catch a basketball game! The building itself is great.... but the thing that really separated it from other stadiums that I have been to was the people. Maybe it's due to the fact that no alcohol is served on premises, but there weren't any drunken belligerent idiots like you will find at most other sporting venues. Everybody was just having a great time rooting on their Heels! There were a couple people rooting for the away team in my section. No spilled drinks or nasty shouts were thrown their way. I hope that I get the chance to visit the Dean Dome again! Highly recommend!! read more

I went to Wake Forest vs North Carolina basketball game this season. I grew up watching Jordan and other great UNC players as a fan of basketball. My college basketball teammate is a coach, so I was able to get courtside seats. The energy level and excitement sitting up close can't be explained. There's nothing like ACC basketball IMO. If you can get a lot parking pass, definitely do so. The cash parking lot is a bit of a hike to the arena. Traffic before games is very heavy, so arrive early to avoid the hassle. Players will call can be tricky to find (staff was very helpful). If you're a UNC or college basketball fan, catching a game at Dean E Smith is a cool experience (IMO). read more

The best part about this venue is that it actually feels like a collegiate building. Many schools have gone to monstrosities or share their facilities with pro teams (like NCSU and the RBC Center), but this truly feels like a school gym, albeit a big one. Of course the Carolina blue paint is everywhere, but the banners and all the team photos hung around the concourse make it authentic! Trying to judge the quality of the Dean Dome is a strange thing... The arena could be made out of cardboard and it would still host a really great time. You go there for the screaming masses of UNC students, and you probably won't notice the venue itself at all. Which is not to say that it's a bad place. Quite the contrary. It's large and well-maintained (various student groups are obligated to take turns sprucing it up in between events). It can seat an amazing amount of people, which is both good and bad, since you're more likely to actually get into the games, but less likely to get an decent seat. The nosebleed sections do suck, as they do in any sporting arena, so do whatever you can to ensure that you get good seats. read more

I find it shocking that this is an option of places to review! The Dean Dome is a Tar Heel treasure. It's a beacon on top of a little hill and really lights up on game days. The energy in the place is great and a Tar Heel crowd is a great crowd. Carolina Basketball fans, especially those that would venture to the Dean Dome for games, are supportive of their team through thick and thin. You'll find very few bad losers which is a bonus. It's also a very beautiful venue. The lights, the Carolina Blue of both the infrastructure and the fans, the jerseys and banners in the rafters. Also I've found it to be very clean for a sports venue, especially the bathrooms which is shocking for a stadium. One thing though is don't get seats that are high up if you have vertigo or a very extreme fear of heights. I've had seats at literally the highest level of the dean dome touching the ceiling before and trust me it's high, and the stairs are honestly quite steep. My favorite experience at the Dean Dome however is probably giving blood at the annual Carolina Blood Drive in the summer. Giving blood right on the court of the Dean Dome while staring up at the rafters? Any Tar Heel fan will enjoy it, I promise. Look into it if you've never heard of it before :) read more

GREAT place to watch a basketball game. Although it's big for a college arena and doesn't have that claustrophobic feel of that arena a few miles down the road, it's a GREAT atmosphere. You can feel the love everyone has for the team and the university. Looking up at all of the banners, honored and retired jerseys, you immediately feel like a part of history. The feeling of community that is fostered must be why you'll frequently see former players coming back to watch big games. It's fun to walk down the hallways and see the photos of former teams and they play those great "We Are Carolina" videos full of alumni during the games. The student sections can get rowdy (as they should) and the rest of the arena, full of the older alumni is a great place for families. You'll usually see lots of kids having a blast at the games (I know I did when I went as a child). Also, the food is what I'd want at a Carolina game. They have barbecue sandwiches (Carolina style of course. It's not Allen and Sons, but it'll do in a pinch) and Chick-fil-a sandwiches. I now live in Los Angeles, and have been to a couple of games at Pauley Pavilion (UCLA). It's about half the size of the Dean Dome, but they were still unable to fill it for the game I went to (it's was CSU Fullerton, but still. I went to the Elon game in December of 2011 in Chapel Hill and it was 95% filled). They had all the championship banners and retired jerseys, but it really made me realize what a special place the DES Center is. Pauley lacked the air of excitement and lacked the feeling of community. If you can catch a game in the Smith Center, make sure you do, because I have not had any experience remotely close to it in my life. read more

My husband and I attended a game last week. We are talking about getting season tickets because we loved it, and wished we could attend this weekend's game. We parked at University Mall and paid 5.00 to park. The bus dropped us of early, but we had to wait about an hour for the return trip. It was difficult to find the correct bus to return us to the mall. The game and whole experience was relaxing and stress free except for the annoying VA fans behind us - we moved our seats to the top of the arena - any seats that are empty - can be used after half time. Food was expensive, but they let me bring in a water bottle. Bags were searched and tagged. UNC big screen videos kept us updated, and several University sport recognitions were made for other sports. UNC blue is a must to wear! We felt like part of the family while we were there. After the game, wait a bit in your seats for the lines to go down to get on the busses, look around for empty UNC plastic cups that people left at their seats. We picked up a few and (cleaned them) and use them at home. I want to go again! read more

The narrow concourses date the building, but that big, wide bowl is home to 20-odd thousand Heel fans rocking the joint. And although you've seen them a billion times on TV, nothing really prepares you for all the jerseys in the rafters. Absolute genius. Humanizes and shrinks the space in the most classy way imaginable. Not to mention intimidating for opponents. More cheesy, though, are all the blown up team photos that ring the concourses, providing a kinda HS gym effect. Cute and homey in a way, but also a reminder that the Dome is fast approaching 35 years old. read more

What a dump. I always wanted to see a game here because it looks nice from the outside. It's not that nice on the inside. People wouldn't stop walking up and down during the play. I guess I'm used to Indiana where we take basketball seriously and you only move to and from your seats during timeouts. The food was expensive but the Bo sandwich was good. The traffic control was the worst- Waze took us on a wrong turn where we had to turn around and then sat in a line for 26 minutes while the traffic cop stared at us as he skipped us repeatedly. He finally let us out once people started walking towards him. read more

I work for UNC and get tickets to the men's basketball games several times a season. In my humble opinion the best place to park is at The Bell Tower Parking Deck. Its only $5 per vehicle and a .7 mile walk to the Dean Dome. Traffic is lighter coming in and leaving campus using South Road. Just dress warm and wear comfortable shoes! read more

I am reviewing this from an outsider perspective. Let me just start off about the parking....IT SUCKS. The directions to get to the parking....website is no help. The signs and kid you not says "turn right at the next 7 lights". The idiots directing the traffic need to go back to school. With little ones in tow research and figure out the best way to park because if you park on campus you might be a mile away and guarantee one of the directions you will be walking up hill. The arena itself is great...all the seats are great even in the $25 reserved nose bleed sections. Just research a little more on parking and expect to see signs like..."turn left at third light" and then you see more parking signs going every which way if you don't turn left at that third light. read more
