A tea party dream! My first afternoon tea experience- and it was a great time. The house is adorable with each of the rooms having its own aesthetic. Even the bathrooms have been changed to accommodate it as a restaurant. We had the tea for two, and it was nice! Some of the sweets we weren't a fan of fun, but there was some variety. Came here for afternoon tea for a birthday and had an amazing experience! They even had a birthday card ready. It is a really cute building and sat us straight away (with reservation). The selection of teas were great and we each tried a different one. My favourite was the green wild strawberry or earl grey. Every bite of the tea was well thought out and tasty. My favourite savoury bite was a tie between brioche toast and butter chicken pot pie. For sweets 1000% the apple cheddar blossom , I would go back just for this bite. I came on a Saturday for brunch. We were visiting from out of town and their place looked so cute we had to try it. It's near the water but without a view of it. This is totally fine as it's set in a beautiful garden. We sat outside and had umbrellas providing shade. We got the bread/pastry basket. Outside of the croissant it was a bit of a disappointment. However my entree was awesome. I got the pancakes which were more like crepes. It came with eggs and should have had bacon and sausage I think but I don't eat pork so I subbed for mushrooms as they wouldn't allow two substitutions though I wasn't getting 2 items. But the mushrooms were the best part so it worked out. My friend got the quiche of the day which was good. My drink was yummy and was garnished with items straight from the garden. Met some friends for brunch while in Calgary and picked the Deane House as both of them, lifelong Calgary residents had never been. The place is a heritage home that was obviously rebuilt after the floods a few years back. We sat in what would have been the back yard under a big tent, on what turned out to become a very warm day in Cowtown. Thankfully our 10:30 AM reservation found the temp in the mid 20's Celsius so reasonably comfortable. The service was exceptional, although a bit slow given the amount of staff around. After our food was dropped a request for hot sauce and pepper took entirely too long. The poached eggs were all quite well done with only a hint of runniness. We also were not asked how we wanted our eggs upon ordering, which may have been by design. The lovely K was supposed to get preserves with her toast which didn't happen. When she asked one of the staff for her preserves they came only after our plates were cleared. Overall, could have easily been an epic brunch, but the attention to the small details were lacking. That said we'd love to give them another try on our next trip to Calgary. read more

Loved the set up, lots of people though very noisy. Which is fine but I could barely hear my aunt from across the table. We went for afternoon tea, cost about $130 not including gst and tip. The tea was good, the scones were warm and very tasty. The clotted cream was good and the peach jam was phenomenal. The tray consisted of a lot of different foods. My favourites were the sandwich, curry pie, raspberry tart, and ginger and rhubarb tart. The food was either very bland or extremely salty? Especially the salt! My aunt hardly touched most of the food and I tried to but I was drinking tons of water after each bite. You think they'd try their food before serving it. Very disappointing at the price you pay. I mean everything was salty even the cheesecake. Was a once in a lifetime experience, 100% could've been better. The people who served us were lovely and everyone was kind. When I use the word amazing to describe our experience at Deane House, it is an understatement. My family and I had a reservation and were seated immediately on arrival. Our server Katie (sp?) was so attentive. She served us water right away and gave us the specials for the day. We came prepared to eat a lot since we had heard so many great things about the menu. We ordered the beet salad, shrimp, crab, mussels, and fish/rice cakes to start. The beet salad was delicious - beets so fresh and earthy and the bee pollen complemented the flavor so well. If you love beets, I would definitely recommend trying it. Shrimp - definitely a unique experience - the shrimp is raw but very sweet and pairs well with the pickled red onions and herbs. Crab - my favorite starter with the different levels of flavor including some spices mixed in with the fresh crab atop poached leek. The fresh bread was crusty on the outside and so soft on the inside, perfect for dunking in the mussel broth Mussels - I'm not normally a huge fan of mussels, but I ate so many of the mussels this time around as they were so plump and juicy, and cloaked in a delicious spiced broth that I could've drank on its own. Fish and rice cakes - not my favorite dish but the cakes were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The fresh salad with a lemon vinaigrette complemented the pan-fried cake. The kitchen had also shucked too many oysters so we were gifted 12 oysters. My dad was so impressed by how fresh the oysters tasted. Since I'm not the biggest oyster fan, I cannot comment. My favorite main meal was definitely the bison. The biggest surprise for me was the lamb. I'm typically not one to order lamb but when I tried this specific lamb dish, I was surprised by how little gaminess I tasted in the meat itself. The sauce was extremely gamey but the meat was actually so tender and delicious. The dessert I would recommend is definitely the treacle pudding. The spices used in the pudding were really powerful and paired really well with the creme anglaise. Please do yourself a favor and make a reservation to have dinner here. First off, we went here solely because of Chris Barton from Anew Table. We loved his restaurant, and was always blown away by the set menu's. Anew was 11/10 stars. The good stuff; great decor, perfect level of attentiveness and personality from the staff. The bad stuff; We did the 'tasting' menu ($100 a person, two person table). I did not ever really read much into the menu, as I was excited to get the Anew experience again. Sourdough bread, and salted butter as a complimentary appy. I can save you a longer read, by telling you this was the best part. Next came a single cracker, with some beef tartar. I am unsure about the presentation expectation, but the cracker had been slid around the plate, so what appeared to be a trail of yellowish oil was not necessarily enticing. The cracker bite was bland, no seasoning. Cold dish. Second was a strip of shredded crab, on a leek, some more oil, and some greens. The odor was not a pleasant odor, and again the flavour was bland. Two bites. Cold dish. Third was a beet salad. Calling it salad is a stretch. Some diced beets, on pickled cabbage, and sprinkled with bee pollen. Flat out not good. Bee pollen is basically tiny hard bits of yellowish chalk. About ten fork fulls, so decent sized dish, but not edible, we tried. Cold dish. Fourth was sablefish on pork belly, with a leek, and some creamed celerac. The pervasive theme was no seasoning. Two bites of each bit. Warm dish, except for the leek. Fifth was steak of some sort, but sadly only three'ish bites, not tender, pretty tough chew. There was a small single bite tart, with some dry protein, and no seasoning again, no moisture left in it at all. Warm dish. There was a dish of apple butter, cheese, and some crackers sent out, as we didn't finish the beets. Very thoughtful of the kitchen / server, and again they did an excellent job. Final was the desert. I believe it was a pavlova, with a berry sauce, and lemon curd on the top. There was lemon rind on top, that was imbedded in the sauce, and the palatability of sisal rope. Perhaps it was supposed to be candied, maybe I was supposed to remove and not eat it. The pavlova was done well, but the berry sauce has zero sweetness, only tart, and the lemon curd was all tart, and a tiny bit sweet. This was a mouth inverting bitter / tart ride. Not good. With four drinks (two glasses wine, two tap beer), and tip, this was a $330 dinner. I paid less at Anew, and would have paid this amount to have that prior experience. This was top five worst meals I have ever experienced. Every dish was tiny, not seasoned, not visually pleasing (white flavourless celerac cream on white plate....), largely not warm, flat out not good. I don't know what happened, but Dean House is not Anew table. Now I know, and it's sad that it isn't. Maybe the super expensive real estate has cut into the ability to present cohesive, engaging, delicious pre-set menu's? Maybe, having management / investors / association with another restaurant has hamstrung Chris Barton? Maybe just having to offer a full optional menu, and trying to offer a pre-set experience, can't live in the same space? As we sat through this, we didn't see anyone else do the tasting menu. I feel we chose wrong. The other patron's selections all looked great, and filled their plates. We won't go back. But, I will go to the next venue Chris Barton finds himself at (and at the helm again), as I have hope of experiencing what was, once again! read more

Deane House is River Cafe's newest sister restaurant. We decided to come and try it for Big Taste after our first lunch at Q Haute Cuisine. Yes, two lunches. Winning. The inside is absolutely stunning. The setup makes you feel like you're eating outdoors (without being outdoors). The Big Taste menu was $15.00, what a steal. - Moroccan spiced red lentil soup - we were worried that would be heavy but the soup was delightful. The slightest kick. Really refreshing and bright flavour. - 7k Ranch longhorn burger - the bun was perfect. The garlic aioli was tad too sweet and overpowering but the longhorn was meaty and tender. - Dent corn grits - corn grits has a very unique texture. It was creamy and gritty (for better use of the word) but after a few bites, it starts to taste the same and feels like you're eating mush. A whole plate was too much. Lucky, we shared. The pumpkin seeds and roasted vegetables gave a much needed contrast but couldn't save this dish. - Lemon Saskatoon squares - the lemon squares were a perfect two bite dessert. Light and citrusy. Even the experience of walking from the parking to the front door is so unique & calming. The place is buzzing during weekend brunch, which is the time when we visited. A little salty) Desert: Treacle Pudding (really good, but I've also not had treacle pudding before so don't know what to compare it against. However, as a stand alone, it was quite good) RECOMMENDATION: If I had to come again next time, I would come for the scenery, drinks and desert. A historic house turned restaurant in Inglewood, this place is perfect picturesque location for brunch, lunch or dinner (and many weddings!) So it's no question that they are highly sought after for brunch, and I really appreciate that the Deane House takes reservations. We trekked through a snowy morning and nestled in with some teas and London Fogs while we studied the menu. I honestly had a hard time choosing! The breakfast items that caught my eye: saskatoon berry sourdough pancakes (with lemon balm, maple syrup and chantilly cream), the smoked arctic char eggs benny and the croque madame. Ultimately, the asian twist on the duck confit perogies won me over (braised red cabbage, fermented squash and beet dashi). Although very delish, the sour beet and cabbage offset the richness of the duck well, I felt the portion was quite small (five perogies is more of an appetizer than a meal). I foraged a bit of pancakes and hashbrowns from my dining mates to fill up. Overall, a great experience with the quality of food, service and view. I'd definitely return and try something heartier. read more

My daughter and I came today for a much anticipated high tea and I was incredibly disappointed. I am visiting from out of town and thought it would be wonderful to try Dean House for a lovely night tea, with all the delicious treats you have to offer. Our server was lovely but the food fell far short. I mentioned to our waitress that the sandwich breads were hard as if they had been sitting out in the air and not fresh, she told me that this would be passed on. The clotted cream was not clotted but whipped, I know this as I have had clotted cream many times and from the UK. The jam was runny and a little bitter, the marshmallows were rubbery and not easy to eat so they were left, along with the miniature Peppermint macarons. The tea wasn't hot and came out well before our food. It was a very expensive disappointing afternoon. read more

This is a lovely restaurant, and Deane House was the perfect location to celebrate our USA Thanksgiving. The dining room is simply charming, with an inviting bar and river view. The food was very good and service unpolished, but well meaning. The specialty of the house, Roast Chicken, was moist with a nice Applewood, smoky flavor, but weirdly smothered in salad. The lettuce leaves were huge, and it was as if you had to go on a hunt to find the chicken. This salad concept was a huge mistake. The chicken and potatoes should stand on its own. Scrape the salad "frosting." My brisket was tasty, but had a Corned Beef flavor, which wasn't bad, but certainly didn't taste like classic brisket. Because of the food discrepancies, I cannot give Deane House five stars, but it is a very nice restaurant, with a maturity lacking in the 17th Avenue eateries. If you haven't been to Inglewood lately, it has a new vibe and has become more developed, more trendy and more lively. Including the Deans House, which has been an historic house in Calgary that I'm assuming was transformed into this unique restaurant. The wait has been long for me to finally see what this House was all about. The restaurant itself is really neat and true to its home comfort style of restaurant. The brunch menu has plenty of options and items you'll want to try... Such as the rabbit Perogies. First impression of the restaurant was pleasant, cozy, and very trendy. All the customers seemed to live a downtown trendy lifestyle...interesting atmosphere. Maybe that's just the Sunday brunch crowd. Overall, I would recommend this place to friends. Big Taste gave my gf and I the perfect opportunity to try Deane House for the first time. A few of our friends had tried here before and did not recommend we go but we wanted to see for ourselves. We were not disappointed. The ambience was great, we had a great view of DT, service was very friendly. The first 2 dishes of the gourmet menu were good but nothing amazing and we were starting to think we should have listened to our friends BUT the poached egg that came after was incredible. Both our eggs were cooked perfectly and they brought out this nice teapot to pour the duck broth at the table. Every dish after that continued to improve our opinions. By the end of the evening we were pleasantly full (not to the point where we struggled to finish our food) and we will definitely be back to try the regular menu. One thing to know if you decide to try their big taste menu next year is the entire table has to either get the big taste menu or order off the menu. No mixing. Which is sad because we actually had 2 other friends who wanted to join us but decided not to come as they wanted to order off the menu. Went for a lovely brunch for a friends 40th. Really impressed with the refurb they did. We were seated on the porch with a view of the river and it was just lovely. As we went on a Sunday they have free corkage, so we took 2 bottles of more expensive champagne to celebrate. The waitress was quick to make sure they were on ice and cold for when everyone arrived. Glasses were given to us straight away too. As there were 6 of us we ordered and then passed plates around so everyone could get a taste. Had a couple duplicates of the below. 1. Soft Poached Mans Organic Eggs, with Smoked Red Lentil Hummus, Goat Feta, Sumac ($15). Great bread, hummus was a spread on the bread and the goats feta was delicious. 2. Sunny Side Duck Egg, with Toasted Sourdough, Grilled Merguez, Harissa Yogurt ($16). Ducks eggs are delious I discovered and you should too! Merguez sausage had amazing depth of flavour and the yogurt added the right balance to the richness of the duck eggs. 3. Duck Rillette eggs benedict, with buttermilk biscuit and mustard hollandaise ($16). Creamy slightly spiced hollandaise, duck rillette was more of a patty that they had grilled up under the eggs. Crisp but still soft and juicy. Great dish. 4. Driview Rabbit Perogies, with rabbit sausage, fermented carrots, buttermilk carrot puree ($18). This was a clear winner. The presentation was beautiful, and then you tasted the dish. Rabbit perogies are the only way forward as far as I am concerned. A most delightful treat. We shared a dessert, cant remember which one, but know that it was gone in seconds. Definitely a bunch on the higher end, but also higher end products and so well made with great presentation. This is the place you go to have a long leisurely brunch with people you enjoy spending time with. Find those people and go. Reservations highly recommended. read more

Went for brunch today. The service was terrible. We had to ask to place our order, even though the waitress made several trips to the table beside us. At the end of the meal we had to go to the hostess station to ask for our bill, even though a credit card was sitting on our table for the waitress to see. Also, when I made the reservations it was for 4, then when the reservation was confirmed I changed it to 3 and said it was for my daughters birthday and could they make something for dessert. This was our first visit here. Since we made last minute reservations, we were sat outside. Which was perfect because it was another beautiful day in yyc. There was a wedding happening when we were seated so we felt a little bit like we were in the middle of a private event. A bit awkward. However, no one seemed to mind so we carried on. Location is beautiful. Grounds of the restaurant are well looked after and they have such a beautiful garden. Just note that the freight train is right across the street and the restaurant borders a very busy road. There wasn't any music playing outside so you will notice the road noise for sure. We had another adult and 2 young children with us. Not really thinking much of it, the menu was definitely tailored towards adults only. However, the kitchen was kind enough to offer grilled cheese or hamburger with chips. Kids picked the hamburger and chips, which was not a hit. A little too fancy for their liking. The free sour dough bread offered was a nice touch. Do I dare admit that I had 4 pieces??? They offer still or sparkling water, without an extra cost, which I can truly appreciate. We skipped the appetizers and went straight to the mains. Two of us had the halibut, cooked perfectly might I add. The other guest had the duck, another dish cooked perfectly. I do want to mention that while it was all so tasty, the portions are on the smaller side and most main dishes cost $43+. I did end up trying the cheesecake which made me a happy camper. Four of us came for a late dinner - and in a word, it was fabulous. First of all, the house itself is gorgeous and having the restaurant in the house allows for more quiet, intimate tables in the various rooms. We were seated in the enclosed wrap-around terrace. We all started with an aperitif - there were some really unique offerings. They went down smoothly with the warm bread and butter that was delivered. The other three ordered off the menu (lamb & boar) but I ordered the duck special, which was sublime. I have to admit that I was embarassed by the fact that I cleaned my plate so well that it looked unused! We weren't planning on ordering desserts but when I saw a pot de creme on the menu I was sold. It was as delicious as everything else that I had eaten that evening. This restaurant is too expensive to become part of our regular rotation but it is wonderful for a special event or a bit of a splurge. read more

When my typical brunch spot was booked for a wedding, my friend and I decided to head to Deane house after hearing many positive things. I enjoyed the patio music and the atmosphere at the bar. We were promptly served and quickly ordered. I had the blue berry pancakes and my friend had the fried chicken and biscuit sandwich. I found my meal to be absolutely delightful while my friend afterwards said his meal was a 2/10. That being said I am not rating this place higher for two reasons. One was the charge on the bill for water. $1 for filtered river water reeked of a cash grab despite how pretentiously it was described on the menu. Lastly, when I received the bill there was a card stuffed in the leather envelope informing me that I had just dined at one of the top 10 new restaurants in Canada. It came across as arrogant and uptight. If you're REALLY one of the top 10 new restaurants in Canada that story should be told in the food. My final verdict would be that it's worth checking out. Just don't order the tap water. read more

A lovely heritage house on the banks of the Elbow, situated in quirky and pleasant Inglewood. Close to downtown, but still maintains an 'old school' feel. We tried three dishes, the madame croque, the scrambled eggs, and the feature of the day, pancakes with various fruits and sugared walnuts with maple syrup from Quebec. They seem to try and keep everything locally sourced as much possible, which is always nice to see. Was there after COVID lockdown, and was disappointed. Food portions were small, prices are not reflective of the meal quality (lack there of). Not sure how you can charge $200 meals that has no flavor. Tables were cramped together while plenty of empty spaces in the restaurant; guess it was easier for the server to sit ppl so close together. Not at all tasty or filling. We both left hungry and dissatisfied. The location is cool but the kitchen really could have been substituted by a McDonald's and you would have enjoyed a better meal with a good view.
