I enjoyed this open kitchen concept restaurant. I liked watching the brigade be orchestrated by the expeditor as the orders came in. We had great service as our server was training a person and our hostess was jumping in to help out. Quality is the name of the game here. Starting with the fresh baked buns with honey butter. Yum. I had the Bison with wild mushrooms, it was tender and well seasoned but there was no wow factor. My partner had the special gnocchi with lamb and it wowed us! This is a great spot for casual or semi formal dining, nicely decorated with a modern feel. There are high tops and regular seating. We were there for the Father's COVID Day brunch. Great menu, lots of variety to keep everyone happy. They also did an off menu order for our table that was very reasonably priced on the bill. I had the Croque Madame with home fries. Really nice sandwich, beautiful bread topped with a perfect egg and a side of delicious potatoes. The signature Caesar was spicy and exchanging smoky bacon for celery was a nice touch. Meal itself was mid the real star of the show was the NYC cheesecake mousse. The flavour and texture of the cheesecake really worked well together. The fresh fuit and chocolate sauce complemented the cake very well. Pasta was so underwhelming I went to my delivery driver convinced I didn't get the right order. It didn't look anything like it did on the photo and the flavour was just not there. The raviolis on their own did have a good flavour. Arancini itself is ok but the sauce is too thick and salty. Not great for families with small children as they don't have high chairs or changing table. We went last year after moving to the area and we did get a highchair. Went yesterday and they don't have them now. But when we got seated in a booth with the toddler inbetween my husband and I, the waitress brought over a kids menu and a kids water cup. I'm just confused how you have those items but not a highchair. Just something to consider before going. read more

Stopped in for brunch on our way to Kananaskis. The servers were really lovely and nice, but they seem to be having some road bumps in terms of adjusting to in-house dining. We waited about 45 minutes for our food, since the kitchen was apparently fairly backed up and they only had two servers working. My mom got the eggs Benedict and I got the brie grilled cheese. The eggs Benny was okay, served with large chunks of ham, but the hollandaise was a little bland - a hit more of lemon would have helped a lot. The grilled cheese wasn't to my taste, it didn't have much in the way of seasoning/flavour. I might give this place another shot next time I'm down this way, given the other very positive reviews. read more

Just got home after an outstanding dinner at the Fence & Post. It was a Birthday dinner for 9 people and the range of food ordered was all over the menu. Everybody absolutely raved about both the appetizers and their entrees. And the service? Attentive and professional while being friendly. My wife and I have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in Canada and the USA. I can't tell you how proud we are to have a restaurant of this caliber in Cochrane. The good... The food is never disappointing. The chefs definitely know what they're doing here with their dishes. The menu changes regularly and adapts to seasons and local ingredients. It isn't a massive menu, which I welcome and am fond of--I can try all things once! Pricing is expectedly in the $30 range for entrees, while appetizers settle in at around $15 a plate. Desserts are really great and average around $8. They have a great wine selection, opting for some of the lesser known, or even lesser chosen estates. The service is very friendly and casual, with the right amount of attention. The bad... The hours are a little hard to figure out. I'm never really sure how late this place is opened until. Sometimes, I drive by and see their lights on late and a few tables being served. Other times they are closed really earlier and at unexpected times when I've walked by at night. On their web site they open Tuesdays to Sundays until "close". The other day, we learned that their kitchen closes at 8pm and we'd just arrived 10 minutes before with no reservations. I think this means I need to plan ahead and make a reservation instead of dropping in, but the expectations aren't really clear enough for me to be able to be a dedicated local patron. I just wished this was outlined somewhere on their site so that it's easier to meet each others expectations of dining in at their restaurant, at a timely hour, so that they can plan staff better during COVID-19. This would be something I could work with. The ugly... None! Favourite dish: the eggplant! Most interesting looking dish: the garlic balloon Average price: $180 for two people, which is comprised of 1 bottle of wine at 25% off (Thursdays only), 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 1 dessert. I really enjoyed this restaurant, everything was great! From the service which was excellent! Fast and on time, they asked at the right moment if we needed anything, without being annoying. The wine was excellent too, they have a good selection of wines and those that we tried were delicious! Appetizers were awesome, i believe the tuna with watermelon was my favorite, but all others were very good as well. And the main dish was probably the best thing on the menu, I had the duck, and it was spectacular, perfectly cooked! And the fusion of flavored made it jus amazing! My partner had the pork and it was excellent as well. We're definitely looking forward to go back! In my opinion this is the best restaurant in Cochrane!! We went for the first time soon after the restaurant opened and we've returned a half dozen times because the food and service is just that good. The menu changes regularly, so it's hard to recommend anything in particular. But on a recent visit there was a pork belly that I would kill or die for. And the Arancini appetizer is a constant that never disappoints. Melanie, the owner, is an excellent hostess and a first class sommelier. She remembers and takes care of return customers. read more

Heard about this restaurant from a few friends and decided to take the quick 10 minute drive out to Cochrane from Calgary to check it out. It is located just south of McKay's ice cream in the heart of Cochrane. First impressions is this place is welcoming and friendly. The dining room is well designed with some nice private tables. I always appreciate a place where you can see the inner workings of the kitchen and at Fence & Post the kitchen is in the open. Staff is friendly yet very professional and knowledgeable. We decided to hit the bar and have wine with a few starters. The bartender was very knowledge and knew the menu well. To get things started we had the brisket and romaine hearts to share. The presentation was excellent and the food was delicious. Paired this with a nice Oregon Pinot Noir and it made for an outstanding meal. My only reservation is the menu is restricted for those who have dietary requirements so it was hard to find a fit for someone who is gluten intolerant. The restaurant did their best to accommodate. Overall this place is definitely worth the drive to Cochrane. Food was excellent and so was the service. There is no question we will return. read more

Fence & Post was very celiac aware. They have a separate fryer and although it is not a gluten free kitchen, they take precautions to reduce risk of cross-contamination. After asking my usual questions, I was very comfortable with how they handle orders and food prep for people with celiac. The gluten free options are clearly marked on the menu as well. We had a light dinner of appetizers consisting of Chicken 65, Crispy Fried Brussel Sprouts and Beet Salad. We finished with the Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae and Creme Brulee. Everything was delicious! The staff were very attentive and patient when I asked questions, thereby contributing to a stress-free and relaxing dining experience. Note: As of the writing of this review, they have a Fish and Chips special on Wednesdays (including GF!) so I hope to return to sample that one day. We hope to patronize this restaurant more frequently in future! read more

Went on Saturday, December 23, about 5:30 for what was going to be our first time at a new place we've wanted to try in Cochrane. There was about 4-5 tables with customers, the place was otherwise empty and NO lineup waiting, we were greeted and we told the hostess there was 2 of us. We were escorted to a small table by the kitchen, then my husband asked if we could choose a different table, a table that seated four. She said we could not sit there because it was for four people. She continued to say she would ask the manager if she could seat us there. At that point we walked out. Seriously, it was not busy at all and we could not even sit where we wanted. Wow, what a way to run a new business, not impressed. Can't say we'll be making a return visit anytime soon and we will not recommend this place to anyone we know. They say support your local businesses, how can you when this happens. read more

Attention was paid to the charming and cozy decor in this new restaurant on Cochrane's historic Main Street. Unfortunately much less attention was paid to their menu - very carb and fried-food heavy and offering little to nothing in the way of salads and lean meats. The restaurant couldn't do a simple topper of chicken breast on their lone salad offering. We hope they revise their menu to offer something for the more health-conscious patrons - for now we will steer clear. read more

I have been to the Fence and Post several times now and have been impressed every time. The restaurant is well styled and blends old and new very well. Servers are attentive but not constant at the table and the food is simply incredible. Portion sizes are not huge but the quality is excellent. Looks like I'm first to review this cute restaurant! My friend and I were shopping in Cochrane and a local business recommended this restaurant for lunch. We both loved the decor. It's trendy and modern. Kitchen is open for viewing and they seem to have thought of everything. They have a chef table , a lounge, booths, and tables, linen napkins and water that I believe could be either reverse osmosis or mineral! Nice touch!! The restaurant was not terribly busy...1/3 full. The breakdown happened I believe with our server. She was lovely, however she did not pay attention twice. First when we order and secondly when she served it. We both ordered the full salad (pointing to it on menu) so when 2 small side salads were produced we were a little taken back. We thought perhaps this was the full salad so we didn't say anything. My salad had dressing which I liked. I had 2 halved cherry tomatoes on arugula and tiny bit of shredded radish, and a few tiny capers. My friends salad was arugula leaves and 3 tiny capers. Her plate looked like a handful of arugula. I'm not exaggerating!! A server should always check when picking up order and if something is missing make the kitchen aware. When we asked if the whipped feta was missing from our salad our server said the large table at the back must have thrown off the Chef?? I believe they have a very professional chef and help in the kitchen by looking at other patrons food around us and the menu. I will probably try this spot again but I will be very clear on what I'm ordering . I'm sure next time we will be able to up the rating to 5 stars read more

This was our third visit to the Fence & Post. Our first visit was in June of 2017 and we were simply amazed by the food, service and decor. We had the chicken, steak and a mushroom pastry for an appy. Best food we've ever had in Cochrane, barre none. Everything cooked to perfection. The second time we went was in September, 2017 and the menu had changed a bit. Still ok, but that mushroom tart wasn't on the menu anymore (a tragedy) and the chicken was different somehow. Different sauce, maybe? Different sides? Not as good as the first time. This time it was served with spaetzle and it's not something I would order again, I find it quite tasteless. Last night, we went again and ordered the scallops as an appy and told our server we would share. One would think that would indicate it would be a good idea to serve an even number for sharing but we got three. Only pan-seared and still clear in the middle. We simply couldn't eat it and called our server over. She asked us if we wanted them cooked ALL the way through (as if this was unheard of). We told her that yes, we did. They came back out fully cooked and were just ok. $17 for 3 scallops. Granted, they were on the large size. My husband ordered the steak and I ordered the fish. He ordered his steak medium, not medium rare and it came out on the rare side of medium rare. His baked potato had been cooked hours previously, no longer white but more grey and on the cold side. We had already sent one thing back so we didnt feel good doing it again as we already got the feeling our server was losing patience with us. He got most of the way through the steak but just couldn't finish. The owner came over and we showed her how raw the steak still was. She took it away and said she'd "do something". The bill came shortly after that and there was no adjustment. In fairness, he did eat most of the steak but when we asked the server if there was going to be an adjustment because of the steak, she just said "No." Hmm. Not the service we first experienced here. My fish was ok but not something I'd order again. We were disappointed with our third visit to Fence & Post and hope they can get back to how amazing they were out of the gate! Hopefully, it was just an off night for them, because they really do have a shot at being a great addition to Cochrane. read more

Overpriced and underwhelming. My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner and were offered the most awkward little table next to the front door ( which was propped open) which we declined. We were then seated near the open kitchen at a table for 2 packed in like sardines, practically rubbing elbows the the couple next to us. We started by ordering 2 Cesar's which we patiently waited 10 + minutes for. Worst Cesar's we've ever had. They apparently use a bar mix called Walters not the traditional Clamato . (It tastes like V8 only thicker ) I could have choked it back had it not been room temperature. We flagged down the waitress and sent them back requesting a wine menu. I'm not sure why but most of the wine on it was from France. We have so many wonderful wines from Canada and we were truly disappointed that not a single one was on that list. I ordered the tuna and watermelon salad, which was not a actual salad . Had it been described correctly on the menu I would have passed on this dish, which was nothing more than a few pieces of raw tuna in 1cm cubes lined up next to a few pieces of watermelon in 1cm cubes. It tasted fine but was not worth the price for the portion that's for sure. My husband ordered the bread. Yes, you need to buy the bread ( rolls eyes) For my main I ordered the chicken feature of the day which was a large portion and nicely seasoned however it was dry. My husband ordered the steak. Which he was very disappointed with. Other than lacking any real flavour it was quite small. We decided to pass on desserts and leave as the experience so far was not as fantastic as we anticipated ,not to mention it was about a million degrees in the place. This visit was in mid September so I'm a bit late in posting , but better late than never. read more
