Very good coffee, unfortunately it's increased in price by ~50% over the last couple years so I've been priced out of the market.

Without question, the coffee is phenomenal. Amazing. Inspiring. Ok, enough with the ridiculous adjectives... you get the drift, right? But then you look at the coffee itself. 100% organic, 100% fair trade. Not 25% like some other so-called organic and fair trade coffees. If you're asking "yeah, how do we know if it's really organic and fair trade?" I have two responses. First, look at the company. It is absolutely centered on ethical business practices (and I had thought such was an oxymoron). Always has been, always will be. They are AWARDED for it. Then second, talk to Dean. He's hardly the aloof sort. He buys beans directly from farmers. By skipping the middle men (who can tamper with the coffee, while adding to the cost) Dean goes to the farms, where he pays above market rates from the grateful farmers. And guess who gets the best beans? Finally, the cost of the coffee itself is amazingly affordable. Because the plan is amazingly sustainable. No, Dean didn't write this. Yes, I have spoken with him. And yes, I frequently even give his coffee as a gift that will delight the recipient, but also makes me feel sort of enriched myself. Win/win. Great coffee, at fantastic prices, by a socially progressive company that respects its workers, its suppliers, customers, and the environment. So what's not to love? The bags! That horrible crinkly sound, the stiff unwieldy material, the static cling that makes beans stick to the bag and then spill onto the counter or else stay stuck to the bottom where they get wasted. They can't even be opened without a scissors - seriously! Dean's is full of praise for these bags; they're claimed to be compostable and good for freshness with their all-organic vapor liner, but give me plain paper any day. I emailed them and they thanked me for the feedback but basically told me to get used to it; this is the future of the organic coffee bag. "But I've seen your coffee sold in plain paper bags in stores," I replied. I was told that that's only done for their commercial resellers, but please keep the feedback coming - it is valuable to us. Skip ahead a couple months, I emailed them again: I have *tried* to get to like your bags; I *really* did. But it just isn't working! Won't you please add the option to order plain brown paper bags to your ordering system, along with the option for the other style? No response. I tried again a week later. Still nothing. Again one or 2 more times, adding two more "please"s to my plea. Finally, a response. I paraphrase: "Since you're so, so persistent, and you said Please, email me when you're ready to order and I will PERSONALLY fill your order for you in plain paper bags." I considered the response to be insincere and sarcastic, and the suggestion impractical. So, 5 stars for the great coffee, prices, and the social values. I have a completely different opinion than the others who have posted! I bought deansbeans online -- Moka Sumatara, Timore Atsabe and Full Moon. They're all medium or light/dark blends. Quick delivery etc. I was looking forward to these because of the strong recommendations and because of the work ethic of the company etc. I was hoping for flavor with a medium roast. All three are really weak and lack any kind of flavor (and I've tried all kinds of combinations of using more/less beans and different types of brewing etc). The beans are very dry, after grinding they have the consistency of instant coffee. However, instant coffee from Trader Joe's tastes much better. I've had medium roasts and blends that I've really liked before. I think these are just ... pretty bad coffee beans. I gave one to a roommate before trying it and later apologized after trying -- she said she also didn't like it, that the flavor was like weak coffee no matter how much she used. I've had guests over for brunch/breakfast, and they've also commented on how meh and flavorless it tastes. Disappointing for me, especially after the rave reviews. But after spending ~$30 ordering the 3 coffees and now trying just to finish them up so they don't go to waste and I could buy something else, I hope my review might help someone hesitate and order less. See if you like it first, before ordering a lot of them! It would also be nice if the DeansBeans website allowed reviews / comments on their coffees and products, but it does not. read more

Disclosure: I am not a coffee snob so as to the quality of this bean versus another classy bean, I'm not sure I'd know the difference. I have been buying Deans Beans ever since hearing a graduation speech at Hampshire College about the company. The thing I love about Deans Beans is the political and social aspect to the company. I will gladly spend my money on a small company that works with the local community to produce its product. I think the coffee is quite good -- I love the variety of beans. I try something new every time I buy from them. The shipping is pretty quick (I'm buying all the way from the West Coast) and it's always nice getting a package in the mail that smells like coffee :) read more

I found Dean's beans when searching for a natural decaf coffee that was hazelnut flavored as a gift. My search led me to Dean's, and so I bought one for the gift and several other caffeinated blends for myself to try. Overall, I really enjoyed the coffees! I like that Dean's prices per pound are lower than the local coffee places but don't compromise on flavor and are still lower when you add in s&h. As a bonus, the coffees are organic & fair trade. I also like that they have a "sampler pack" that allows you to try multiple blends at a smaller quantity of some of their most popular coffees. I wish they would offer a customizable sampler pack, so I could pick and choose what other coffees I want to try without buying a whole pound. My only negative so far is that one of their blends that was dark roasted had oily beans. It was so oily that I thought it was water when I opened the bag (this was Ahab's Revenge). The coffee tasted ok, but I prefer a dryer medium/light roast to get the most caffeine and flavor. Returning favorites are Colombian, Uprising breakfast blend, and Rattlesnake Gutter Brew. What a find - can't say enough good things about Dean's Beans. I try only to drink Organic Coffee....and I prefer to have it ground so I can quickly make it in the AM. Deans Beans is by far one of the best coffee companies that I have heard of and I have definitely some experience with my fair share of coffee companies including traveling to Latin America to see some coffee farms first hand. Dean is the kind of guy that is rare to find in this world of growing consumerism and his priorities lie first and foremost with ensuring that his products are ethically sourced all around. He is the type of guy where you meet him and he just inspires you, social justice emanates from him and it is contagious. We order Dean's Beans for our home. We got hooked when we lived in Mass and it was easy to find, and when we moved to Jersey we were thrilled to find out we could order it to have at home. I love that we can feel ok about the ethics of the coffee we drink, and guests always comment on what exceptional coffee it is. We agree. Our favorites are the Roadhouse Blend and the Sumatran (so smoky and smooth!) but everything we have had is excellent. I haven't done the exact math in a while but last I recall I could get 5-6 lbs shipped at a time and the price, including shipping, was comparable or cheaper, ounce-per-ounce, to picking up bags of organic fair trade coffee at Target or wherever. Plus, when we get down to a half pound or so we order it and it's at our door within two days or so, smelling amazing. Update 9/17/2015 I recently placed an order, and - when I saw a few days later that my order still said "processing" - I wanted to add a third bag to the order, to save on shipping. Some coarse ground, Sumatran French Roast to put in the oversized electric percolator for my wedding party. I emailed their customer service department, to ask if this was a possibility. Here was the response I got, yesterday. "I am sorry George, but your order has already shipped. We had a glitch over the weekend and we lost the tracking numbers, so your order is actually en route (if not already delivered). We can still send you your custom wedding coffee, though! As a wedding gift, we'll send it for free. It'll go out tomorrow so you have it in time for the big day - how does that sound?! They help out struggling farmers, by only purchasing fair trade coffee beans, they ensure a good product by only purchasing top quality beans, and they ensure freshness by roasting the coffee, the day you order it, and ship it out, ASAP!! I used to rotate between 3 different coffee companies (Peet's, Starbucks and Trader Joe's), but nothing those companies put out, can compare with the freshness, of a coffee that turns from fresh, fair trade, green coffee beans, to a delicious, delivered to your doorstep, roasted-to-order coffee, in just a few days. And the prices are unbeatable. Look at the unit price on most of the high end coffees in the grocery store, they range from 11-16 dollars a pound, and most of them are not fair trade. Many of the coffees sold by these folks, are under 9 dollars a pound. If you buy two bags at a time, the total price (even with the added shipping costs), will still be cheaper (per pound) than whatever you normally buy at the grocery store (unless you're a Folgers/Maxwell House kind of coffee drinker). read more

I operated a coffeehouse for 10 years and made sure Deans was always available. His coffees were immensely popular with our customers, Ring of Fire, Oromio, Marrakesh all had fans who insisted on it. Sold my shop but still buy for personal use. It's kind of amazing to have such good coffee from such good people at such a good price. I'd buy from these guys for nothing else than they sent us free coffee to help recover from Katrina, but all the other plusses make it a delight to do so.
