And if you've read any reviews of this restaurant on any platform you will see people raving about their salt and pepper pork chops. Like how they're the best pork chops they've ever had in their life, or how they had the pork chops multiple times during their short trip to Montreal. So I was really curious to try them. My husband and I went there for lunch on our most recent trip to Montreal. We shared the peanut butter wontons ($3.50), General Tao Chicken ($12.95) and of course the All Dressed Salt and Pepper Pork Chops with rice ($12.50). The portions were massive. Honestly, we could have just ordered the pork chops to share and we would have been happily full. Instead we were uncomfortably overstuffed, lol. The peanut butter wontons came 6 per order. We asked them to hold the sesame seeds and they accommodated. The peanut butter sauce was a bit runny and oily, but otherwise tasty. They added some chilli pepper paste to the sauce which gave it a spicy kick. The wontons were filled with ground pork. The General Tao Chicken portion was huge. I was hoping for some vegetables with it like bell peppers but it didn't come with any. The sauce was sweet, but not cloying. I usually like a spicy kick to my General Tao Chicken, but I still enjoyed the sauce. The meat inside was a bit chewy and tough; the texture tasted more like pork than chicken to me. And there was a lot of breading. I felt this was definitely a quantity over quality dish. It wasn't bad and I think it's good for the price, but I prefer my General Tao Chicken with little batter and lean breast meat and it was not that. The Salt and Pepper Pork Chops were very nicely seasoned. I really liked the flavours of this dish, but the pork chops are battered and deep-fried and so they were greasy. I think my arteries cried after this meal, lol. I also read in some reviews they were boneless, but our pork chops definitely had bones in them. The pork chops were fatty too. The dish came with rice with a fried egg on top and 3 pieces of Bok Choy and we got 4-5 pork chops. It was a lot of food. You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck here. Were the pork chops the best I've ever had in my life? No. But they were very good. Am I glad I tried them? Yes. Will I have them again? Likely not because they are too fatty/greasy for my tastes. This place is very popular. Lots of takeout orders while we were there. And a man came in who was a regular because the server asked him if he wanted "the usual, no bean sprouts?" and he nodded affirmative and proceeded to seat himself, lol. We were served by a grandma-like lady who was very courteous and efficient. My husband saw the chef in the kitchen and described him as "grandpa-like." Lol. Whenever I eat duck, I want to dip it in a soy/siracha/sesame oil sauce but this duck did not need it. It was so good on its own and the juices flavored the rice really nicely. The pickled veggies were really good. The onion salad thing threw me off at first but it got better the more I ate it. It was not very tasty. The Vermilion soup was very bland. It almost tasted like hospital food. The waiter never came by again to find out how we liked our meal or if he could get us anything else. When it was time to pay our bill, it was a typical situation in an Asian restaurant where you go up to the cash register and they take care of you. We will not return.
