Adam Wallach and Ken Barer do an incredible job of running the camp, marketing it, communicating with parents, rallying kids for weekly spirit days -- and generally rockin' it. The kids swim twice day and are given just the right amount of freedom for their age. My guy was thrilled to ride his bike around on trails independently (without a grownup following closely) in mountain biking. Picky eater though he is, he seems to eat decently well, carbo-loading every day at lunch. Kids get occasional treats like fruit sushi, which the kids get to make themselves, trips to an ice cream truck, and cold (not-too-unhealthy) popsicles in the afternoon. Our guy kept telling us about eating fresh strawberries at lunchtime that were picked, he said, from the camp's own strawberry patch. (I can't verify this claim; it did seem like it'd take an improbably long growing season and an awfully, awfully large patch of strawberries to supply all those hungry kids for the summer.) Counselors keep the kids hydrated in the heat, buses are shockingly timely (MTA should take note!). Bus counselors do a great job of communicating bus arrival times. Activities are varied and interesting, including options like "mining," water works, pottery, archery, crafts, farming(!), all manner of sports (tennis, soccer, baseball, etc..) -- and there is always something new going on. My guy was excited to go from the moment he woke up each morning. Yes, the camp is guilty of blatant cultural appropriation -- but we get that at this point, there's monetary value in the branding that makes change difficult. At least they're changing the logo in coming years. We'd be thrilled if they actually taught the kids a bit about the tribes of the Haudenosaunee / Iroquois Confederacy that the groups are named after. (Our son reports that there is some sort of small "museum" on the grounds with a few artifacts found on-site.) We did some of our own research. All in all a fabulous, fun way to spend the summer. Our guy is counting the years until he gets to be a counselor himself.

One of the teenage camp counselors was tired of him taking so long to catch up with the rest of the group (he was lagging behind due to chronic congenital knee problems- he's had seven total knee surgeries as of now at age 14, then was 7 and had already had two knee surgeries), so the camp staff pushed him down a wet slope to hurry him along, causing him to fall on his arm, which caused a buckle fracture= BREAKING HIS ARM. Our son told us a few years later that the counselor kid was frustrated with him and pushed him down the slope and that was why he fell (the camp told us he was "running, racing with the camp staff" ). If we had known at the time, we would've sued (and we've never sued anyone). DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!!! I will never, ever recommend this camp to anyone. I normally do not post poor reviews, however this camp scarred us. We've never sent our kids to any other camps after our experience here due to the threats they posed to our kids' safety and health. Our kids have pled with us over the years to go to camps and the same old phrase pops up: "No guys, remember Gate Hill?" Followed by: "Oh Yeah." They ruined summer camps for us as a family. He has been enjoying summers at Gate Hill day camp for three years in a row. Where do I start? The facilities are neat and modern. The staff is very personable, enthusiastic and cheerful and overall the Camp is run very smoothly and professionally. On a day to day basis the Camp runs like a well oiled machine providing the children with a wide variety of activities and different themes for each day. They add some nice personal touches by providing daily summaries of what the kids did each day and text message updates to let you know if the buses are running behind due to traffic. As parents, we couldn't be happier that our son is growing as a person, learning different sports and games and making great friends in a safe and beautiful environment .

They have a separate toddler play area which still has some of the visual stuff which is cool. They also have a snack stand, and the obligatory places for birthdays. Staff was generally good, except one jerk at the end who took forever to let us out when trying to leave. She helped a family that just walked up instead of taking the 5 sec to hit the button letting the exit open. I saw where she pressed, so next time I'm hitting it myself instead of waiting; not great to have my toddler get upset on the way at out because there is only 1 person up front who doesn't care.

I'm not really sure why this is legal and mgmt's justification is that counsellors receive tips at the end of the summer. (Thank you for subsidizing some of the salaries,) but there are many committed young people who work very hard to make ever camper's summer an amazing one don't share in those tips. I'm sure the owners are doing quite well and it's a shame that a part of their success is a result of taking advantage of The young people who are so dedicated to making Kiwi a success.

Super fun Girl Scout Camp not too far from NYC / Westchester - about an hour, give or take…read more The great thing is that the drive up starts to feel more and more like "the country" as you get closer. It's kind of easy to miss the entrance but once you find it, you be able to park and walk to the various campsites. Not sure if this qualifies as "glamping"... There are pre-pitched tents with cots as well as cabins and bathroom buildings with showers, toilets and running water at each of the sites. Apparently there are cabins as well but I haven't seen any kids staying in them (they may be for younger kids, when they're here). There are also covered cooking areas with sinks and hearths for fire building and outdoor bonfire fire pits already cleared and ringed with large rocks. Having said that, these areas are all open to the elements, save the roofs in the cooking areas and the bathrooms / tents. Overall a very quiet, peaceful spot in the woods, with tons of trees and a beautiful lake. This is a pretty great introduction to camping for kids if they've never gone camping before.

After 8 years of summer bliss at Pennsylvania Girls Scout Camps we thought we would try Rock Hill. The first year we signed up they cancelled the entire season with no notice 3 weeks before it was supposed to start. This year my daughter was sent home 2 days into her first week for a conflict that was handled incredibly poorly and wouldn't even have been a bump in the road for Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. To make matters worse they didn't even bother to follow up to discuss with us what happened. We will never go back to this camp and will happily continue driving 2 hours to wonderful Woodhaven, Laughing Waters and Mosey Wood where my daughter is happy and safely away from the drama and incompetence that seems to be plaguing Rock Hill. I'm glad others have had better experiences but beware because when things go wrong they do not know how to handle it.

As an OPWDD family, coordinating approvals, support brokerage, and Fiscal Intermediary (FI) requirements can already be extremely time-consuming, and navigating those systems often causes significant delays that are outside a family's control. I was hoping for greater flexibility and collaboration during the enrollment process, but instead felt that the process became increasingly difficult and ultimately decided not to move forward. I appreciate the importance of ensuring campers are a good fit, but I believe families navigating complex disability-service systems would benefit from more understanding, clear communication, and flexibility throughout the admissions process.
