This review has been months overdue. We started about 6 months ago once a week lessons for my daughter. It's unfortunate that the owner Katie claims she has a world class facility and believes in strong values for young women yet that was not our experience. The ONLY reason I stayed this long was for my daughter-and how close and convenient it was to our home. There was a point where my children were sick and we needed a reschedule. I could not get ahold of the Instructor or anyone on this "farm" for 2 weeks. The fact we pay one month ahead and no contact did not sit well with me. Upon finally getting a text to schedule we returned and I did make a comment that I was not appreciative of no follow up. Katie approached me and let me know that she had no time to talk and that she and the instructor liked my daughter and that was the only reason we were "there". A jab at me I can take. I continued to go for my daughter no big deal. I did think it was unfortunate she approached me so hostile as if we were bothering her trying to reschedule for a month we paid for. Unprofessional either way. It's unfortunate that with all of the quotes on empowering women on your walls you act so catty. I suppose that's why she caters to teenagers because she cannot get along with adult women they are seen as a threat. Her sister continued to make comments about a stroller I had walking through the barn.. I had been there 6 months with that stroller and was just now hearing how I shouldn't walk through the barn with it pretty convenient catty behavior comes out full force when they cannot take feedback. As far as " world class facility " goes it is far from that. I've lived in multiple states and visited facilities such as Express Horsemanship in Yukon Ok that is world class. This is highly over emphasized term with this place. No heaters for horses no warm water the floor in the barn is barely held together or flat. The viewing room is dark damp and cold the sliding door barely opens correctly, roof leaks Mismatched roofing and poor lighting. The term working farm is also misused in this case. The female staff seem very intimidated by Katie although probably work perfect for her to boss around. This is absolutely backward and after speaking to a few horsemanship's in the surrounding cities that actually have heat and warm water / clean facilities for clients and horses ... I can see why I should not have settled for Deerfield because of location. If the Owner lived by her written values I could see this place thriving. It is a shame, because young women need great mentors and community. The reputation Deerfield has that I've seen and heard from other facilities/ horsemanship trainers ....is not standing to what their values state, the fact I've heard the same feedback and opinion from ACTUAL high class facilities backs why I need to write this review. THE fact that I have business and family connections to world champion reining coaches/trainers and horses such has the Flarida Family ( Shawn Flarida reining ) and Matt Mills/ Karen Mills ( Matt Mills Reining ) and have told them of her treatment of myself and daughter they could only shake their head and let me know I made a terrible decision going to that "place" And are happy we found better options. The facility has possible potential. The owner seems in my experience to be in a comfort zone of a high school bitter mentality and it's too bad. Check other facilities that will assist in great horsemanship and confidence for your young impressionable child. read more

My daughter started at Deerfield to have an occasional riding lesson but it quickly became her passion, community and extended family. The kids are not just riding horses...they are practicing mindfulness, patience, empathy and focus. My daughter has decided she needs horses in her life. I tried calling several local "horse locations". They were the only ones to call back within 24 hours. Another farm called like a week later. We had a great talk with Kate. She is very informative. We came out and took a tour of the farm. My daughter was instantly in love. I feel like she will be in good hands with Kate. She came in for her first riding lesson, and left begging to join the team. It has to be good if my daughter keeps asking when she can go back. Kate followed up with me to confirm her actual riding lesson time and date. It has been a pleasure to work with them. read more

After moving from the East coast I was looking for a farm to continue riding. I couldn't have found a more perfect barn for me than Deerfield. From the moment you walk onto the property you know you're in a community of horse people. The instructors are among the top I have ever worked with and have taken my riding ability so far in just the short amount of time I have been riding there. Their curriculum is absolutely world class and I am learning everything from how to ride, riding vocabulary, horsemanship, barn management and a whole lot more. I love hanging out at the barn, practicing yoga in the farm's yoga studio and eating absolutely delicious meals cooked in the main house. But above all, I love the horses, who are all impeccably trained and safe lesson horses. If you are looking to not just ride, but become a part of a family then start coming to Deerfield! read more

I'm a really big fan of Deerfield. I found Deerfield when I was looking for a place for my daughters to take riding lessons. Growing up in Texas with family that had a ranch I have many fond memories of riding. Also, when I take my kiddos our to Remlinger they absolutely love the pony rides. So I began a search to get them riding lessons. Getting activities scheduled for my kiddos is not an easy task, most activities are weekly events and my munchkins are only with my every other week. Not to mention my little one at this time is only 4 and a lot of places want children to be a little older before engaging in organized activities. So I contacted all the equestrian centers in Bridal Trails. Most didn't weren't interested in having my little one yet. Worse yet, they weren't flexible at all about my parenting schedule, LAME. I started to become pretty discouraged that I wouldn't be able to get this arranged for my kiddos. But then I discovered Deerfield. I email Katie, the lead instructor, who replied within a day. In short she said that, yes, my little one was a little young but depending on her behavior and attention span she might be able to ride. She also stated that she fully understood my parenting plan constraints and that she felt it was workable. She suggested that I bring the girls out to evaluate the farm and do an introductory ride and evaluation. So I made those arrangements. That was almost 5 months ago now. They are great, they teach the girls good horsemanship, grooming, tacking, and safety. I've even learned a few new tricks watching the girls. They also make sure the girls are paying attention and behave during their lesson. If the girls become difficult they get a warning. If the girls continue they are told that if they continue the ride will end. Not that it's happened often but it straightens the girls right up. And quite frankly, despite the fact I am paying for this, if the girls are nor behaving I want them to have repercussions for their decisions. In addition to the lessons once a month they host an overnight event that my older daughter loves. They get a lot of barn and riding time, this time it's more fun and games type riding then they get to play games in a log cabin, sleep in bunks, and have a pancake breakfast. I'm extremely happy with Deerfield and I would highly recommend for any parent considering lessons for their children. read more

As a 65+ senior , who had never been on a horse until about 10 years ago, I started lessons at Deerfield 2+ years ago. First once a week and now two. I love it and would recommend it to everyone! The trainers and instructors are world class, the horses very well trained and taken care of, and the setting is beautiful. Try it. It will make you very happy. My experience at Deerfield is a long fruitful one that I would never exchange for anything. Before I started riding, my mother rode as an adult student in their non-competitive academy. Soon after she bought a horse of her own and started showing in the Appaloosa Show Circuit. I began taking lessons there at a very young age. Each instructor, no matter their experience or age, taught me something worthwhile. Compassion for the horses, accountability for my actions, and a solid foundation on how to be a leader. Not to mention a full education on how to take care of a horse, perform barn management, and take care of all related equipment. Deerfield teaches it's students how to be a self-sufficient horseman, trainer, and advocate for these amazing animals. I went through their show program and won many world and national titles because of the training that Sue and the instructors at Deerfield gave me. It was not an easy, fun, brief affair. Instead it was an intense, day-in-day-out practice. A real commitment. And while Deerfield offers many levels of investment for a horse riding experience, jumping in with both feet to their show program is worth the cost in every way. It is a leadership program that uses horse riding as the vehicle to forming powerful human beings who will make a real difference in the world. Deerfield's Young Riders Academy is a treat too. The majority of students who ride at Deerfield come once a week in this program designed to teach the fundamentals of horse riding before committing to leasing or buying a horse. Some students never buy a horse and stay in this program throughout their riding career. It's for non-professional riders of any age, but most people in the program are under 17. Beginners learn the basic mechanics of riding, how to groom and tack up their horses, and how to be responsible for their own behavior through training of self-awareness. The summer camps that Deerfield puts on are really great as well, and they improve in quality every year. Each day the campers get to ride and interact with horses, learn about the care taking of horses, eat great food, make with new friends, create fun art work, and learn about gratitude. If I was still a kid, they would be the thing I looked forward to most every summer! My family and I have been taking lessons at Deerfield for over 2 decades! I would Highly Recommend taking lessons, going to summer camps, showing horses, and attending clinics. My daughter has been riding at Deerfield for 3 years now. We love the program. The girls (boys are allowed but they are few) learn how to care for a horse, become disciplined athletes, and grow as competitors. When we started, we just wanted to take a few lessons in a barn with covered arena for my daughter and a heated viewing room for me. When we started at Deerfield, I was surprised how quickly my daughter became proficient and confident as a rider. Your child will get more than horse riding lessons at Deerfield. After I communicated my frustration to the Director in person, she course corrected with the camp counselor- the director made her aware that the day camp is not an extra training day for her team members that happened to be in camp.
