Always looking for an un-chained melody of food, this time for another independent Hot Dog joint. This place came up on my Google maps and another review site rated it positive so I just had to try it. The place had 2 entrances, one for sit down table service and one for take out only. I wasn't prepared to sit so I went to the take out counter. Ordered 2 dogs all the way with the "secret sauce". They split the dog down the center and serve it on a soft dinner type roll topped with the sauce and mustard. The sauce had a hybrid consistency, kinda like a chili sauce meets baked beans texture. One bite and I looked at myself in the rear view mirror and nodded silently saying, "I'm glad I came here". I've lived down the street from here for over a year and only just stopped in, I wish I had sooner. My husband, son and I were stepping out for a Saturday lunch and didn't want to go far. We considered the taco spot in the same shopping center, but they're cash only, so we tried Deerhead instead. I thought it would be counter service and was pleased to see upon entering that there's table service. We grabbed a booth against the wall, the leather on the booths and the establishment in general is pretty outdated but it still has a cute old dinner vibe. I had a root beer float which was gigantic. Worth the $5+. My husband went with a daily special, hot roast beef Rueben style sandwich. I had a single cheese burger and we had a side of cheese fries. I enjoy that they have malt vinegar on the table for fries. The food was all good. Nothing fancy but certainly not lacking favor. I definitely feel like I've missed out not ordering from here or coming in after living close by for so long. We'll definitely return for a quick meal or takeout. I am been eating at this spot since I was a little girl. Today, the grill smells just as good. The food is delicious. The hot dogs and chicken salad are my favorite! Mike has been my waiter for at least 10 years- great service. Recently, there is a new fella at the window. He appears to need to take a deep breath and learn some social skills. This is a review for the Deerhead Hot Dogs food truck. The 2 guys working the truck were very pleasant, but FRANKly (pun in tended) they just could not handle our corporate lunch crowd. I waited 25 minutes for my $7 lobster dog. The lobster was fine but the cheese sauce was awful and the dog itself had been split and grilled - try BURNT to a blackened crisp. I basically ate some lobster chunks and a tablespoon of greasy cheese-whiz-like sauce for lunch. Better luck next time. Next time, go to the store - not the truck. read more

Pretty good dogs here. These are split skinless dogs that have some good flavor. The chili has some heat to it.....enough to stay with you a while. The kraut was perfect not too much vinegar but not too sweet. The rolls are very fresh but don't disintegrate halfway through the dog. I loved the "old-school" feel to the place. read more

This is my third visit to this restaurant and the most impressive quality is that of the amazing employees. The food is very good. I've had the baby cheesesteak and beach fries on previous visits and they were better than the average cheesesteak. I'm here in the "to go" booth (which is a cool concept in of itself) waiting for my hot dog with special sauce. I'll be back to review this meal. The fries were hot, fresh, and delicious as usual. The hot dog was good, but not better than a standard dog I would make at home. The special sauce was okay, but I'm generally disappointed since this is their specialty. Up in Rhode Island I'm stuck with "Onleyville Wieners" my god what I would do to replace that garbage with deerhead hotdogs. They are literally perfect. So far these are the BEST Hot dogs I've ever had! Better than Jimmy Johns, & Johnny's Doghouse. Get the "Double Dog" with everything (this includes the "special sauce, mustard and onions"! The "special sauce" is like a chili sauce but without the chili. It does have a "Kick" to it, but it's not overwhelming. If you need to, you can ask for other toppings (sauerkraut, cheese, cheese sauce, etc.) The other menu items include burgers, cheese steaks, and milkshakes. Overall very inexpensive! My Double Dog with everything was $2.50. They do take Credit Card but you need to order more than $5.00. NOTE: It's in a small Shopping Center so there's plenty of available parking. You can either get "Take Out" by going to the Side Entrance on the far left -OR- "Eat In" by going though the Main Door facing the parking lot. This Deerhead has potential because of its space but their Secret Sauce is not seasoned well, tastes bland not fresh, and is NOT hot enough with temperature or spice as others are. The hotdog wasnt hot enough, served barely warm and the bun was cold. You have a grill just sitting there...Grill the buns. The women cooking here must not eat the food because there was no pride in the dog they deliver. Why is it a man just looks more ideal working a grill. ehhhh. So, it had good reviews, so I stopped here to slake my chili cheese dog addiction. First thoughts; a bit expensive. I got one small chili cheese dog, small fries (which were actually a good size, and PERFECTLY cooked to boot) and a small soda. Total damage, almost $9. I just saw today, the TWO chili cheese dog combo meal at Burger King is about $5. It just seems like a bit much for a HOT DOG. It would be one thing if the hot dog were out of this world, but alas, it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, its GOOD, but its not really anything to write home about. The dog itself is SMALL, and cut in half, which doesn't add to it in any way. The bun was like a hoagie roll, instead of the typical hotdog roll (think Amoroso rolls for my Tri-state peoples). The bun was soft, but the cheese sauce was, well cheese sauce, and the chili didn't stand out at all. Plus, it came wrapped in paper, and was just a MESS to eat. Really, the fries were the star of the meal, which isn't shouldn't something you should say for a place with "hot dog" in the name. The girl at the counter was very nice, and the cook came to talk to the regulars at the order window, so that was nice. I'm not usually in the area, so I'm not sure I'll be back. I called there today 4/19/2017 to order lunch for a co-workers birthday. The woman who answered the phone took FOREVER TO TAKE MY ORDER. Then I said I wanted to over the phone as not to have the co-worker know how much I spent. Not really sure what the hype is about. I've been craving a chili dog for quite some time and I've always wanted to try deer-head. I went online to view the menu but apparently that's only for the bear location which they informed me has closed. So the dogs I ordered were rang in a la carte and I had to tell the person taking the order what toppings were included. I ordered a hot dog with American cheese and a fried egg (the egg was more scrambled than an actual fried egg) and a standard dog with cheese and the secret sauce which I'm assuming is their rendition of chili. Both were subpar, the chili was lacking flavor but was slightly spicy which was a little weird. Also, as another review mentioned there were strange white bits in there almost like bread crumbs, it almost reminded me of slop they would serve in a prison. Lastly, I ordered a coke and it was gone in two sips (one of my biggest pet peeves are places that fill your cup to the brim with ice so I literally have two sips of whatever drink I ordered.) The total price was around $14 which is a little steep. I don't think I would go back anytime soon. read more

I'm really not sure what the hype was about for their secret sauce. I'm really hoping the day I went the sauce wasn't made right. There was a slight kick to it, but lacking some major flavor. Seemed completely watered down, with some kind of mush shopped into it (thought maybe they put the bread in a food processor and added the crumbs to the sauce...at least that was the color of the mush-like substance). The hot dogs were great though. Perfectly grilled, loved that they slice them in half. Hot dogs were flavorful. I'm definitely not writing this place off just yet. I want to give their special sauce another shot or two because after all the positive reviews, I have to believe there's gotta be something there! The Deerhead Hot Dogs Food truck can't Handle a moderate crowd at a church parking lot function. We waited 20 minutes to order and another 20 minutes to get our food. It was silly to have to wait this long....especially with competing trucks in the same area. The 3 guys inside the truck were running around like keystone cops. The food was decent but not worth a total of 40 minutes wait. The sodas were in a cooler of luke warm melted ice.... and that was how they were served to us...they made no attempt to ice down the drinks in the cooler.... and it was kept in direct sunlight so that was not a smart move. They really need to up their game if they want to continue being successful with their food truck at these local events. read more

You have to try their hotdogs with all the fixins'. The sauce is spicy but delicious, and their dogs are even better. They slice the dogs down the center and grill them that way, which is how I cook my dogs to this day. They also have awesome tasting cheesesteaks (not as good as casapulla's in elsmere) but pretty darn good. Their beach fried are also something to check out.
