Got the ticket online the day before and set on my trip. I got there in the nick of time. Picked my ticket waiting for me at the Visitors Center and boarded the train. Old fashion wagons restored to its original beauty. The main Conductor, a very funny young man, kept us informed in a 5 min inaugural chat and at midpoint another one. The weather has been quite warm until now. October 13th and the leaves are just starting to turn colors, still lots of green. No matter, the train ride is about 3 1/2 hrs round trip from Honesdale to Lackawaxen and back along the Lackawaxen River. A stop in Hawley about 45 min into the ride and passengers get in and out at that point. I rode the first leg of the trip on the river side; once we get to Lackawaxen we switched sides, flipped the seats and got to view the forest, rocks, houses, deer. It was fun waving to people on cars, decks taking photos. Very relaxing ride and the views on the river side even with all the greenery were beautiful. Some clearing in the trees lining the route gave very nice views of the river curving and perspective. It's a great family outing. Exciting for young and old alike.

I didn't blame her because I'm not looking to get shot. I love The Band, but I'm also seen the movie Deliverance so we turned around. I'm not sure how friendly the current occupants of Big Pink are, but I'm not sure the neighbors are too keen on visitors driving down Parnassus - it feels like someone's private driveway. UPDATE: I see from Kathleen D.'s review from 2014 the current owners (Don and Sue) are friendly and actually rent out Big Pink for others to stay in. However, I notice the website (https://bigpinkbasement.com/) has updates from 2015 and I wasn't sure what the current situation was like in 2024. I reached out on the website's Contact Us form and here's the response I received: "Hi Julian, Yes you may come down the road at your own risk. A neighbor put up the signs. We are still renting, the link to VRBO is on the big pink basement website. There is a minimum of 3 nights. If you have trouble booking please let me know. All the best, Susan LaSala"

My only wonder is without GPS back in the day did Bob Dylan or THE BAND find this location cause we used it and damn it wasn't easy. But Kate and Dan structured our stay to feel safe without feeling restricted. They have a great setup of six family size tents that are distanced enough to allow us to enjoy nature in solitude. They combine the best parts of camping, cabin life and a bed and breakfast. We took our two kids (five and eight years old) and they had a ball playing in the creek, swimming in the pond, playing with the dogs. In short, it's a perfect place for kids to experience the simple joys of being kids. The tents are rustic enough for an outdoorsman but comfortable enough for someone who prefers sleeping indoors. Cooking meals on your own wood-burning stove takes a bit longer, yes, but the locally sourced food is amazing. Friday night pizza night is the big event of the week. Wood-fired oven pizzas, delicious salads from the gardens and bring your own wine. And the Saturday farm breakfast hits the spot if you're dragging a bit from the previous evening's festivities. We highly recommend Stony Creek as a getaway and hope to be back next year. Thanks, Kate and Dan!

She's now 8 and we can't stop her from running. We look forward to this trip every single year. The kids love it- my 10 year old told me that this was her favorite trip and we have paid much more and traveled much further than this. The adults love giving the kids their privacy and independence. The kids are able to hike, walk the creek, collect eggs, visit the animals, milk the cow.. and the adults just need to sit back and relax. The farm store has everything you need if you want to pack light. Kate and Dan, the owners, are commited to sustainable farming and education- the kids always learn something. Save room for pizza night- it's always delicious. The tents sleep a family of 6 comfortably with a king size bed, two single bunks, and a cabinet bed suitable for two younger kids. When we needed it, there was room for a pack and play (which the farm does have on hand if you need it). Don't hesitate to book here- we've been here for all seasons- the first to check in and the last to check out. It's always pleasant. We're already looking forward to next year.
