This place was pretty off-the-hook when we went there on a Sunday afternoon. The windows are dark…read moreso you can't see in but the Latin music was cranking. Once we went inside it was so loud it was in fact louder than just about any club I've ever been too. It was absolutely impossible to hear anything.. There were some tables and seats at the bar, and a DJ spinning Latin CD's at the back of the bar area. Disco lights were flashing and strobe lights were popping. We mouthed the words to the bartender a few times and eventually she understood we were asking for margaritas. We saw some pretty interesting food going around and got some menus. The menus were LONG. There were a lot of Puerto Rican items on the menu (and interestingly all around this town) and I wasn't all that familiar with them so I sort of picked stuff randomly. The bartender was able to figure out what I wanted because I was pointing to the things we wanted. It was still so loud my wife and I could only communicate by texting each other on our phones. It made me laugh to think of people who complain about places being too noisy -- this was a whole 'nother level. The food came and it was mostly very good. Potato croquettes (Rellenos de papa) stuffed with ground beef, a shrimp filled crispy fritter (pastelito de cameron), alcapurrias (fried green banana rolls with ground beef), mofongo con carne frita (a sort of mound of green plantain mashed up served with fried pork) and a side of mofongo de plantano maduros (which I think ended up just being regular plantains). I thought the mofongo con carne frita ($10) was supposed to come with white or yellow rice and possibly plantains and fried potatoes but it didn't come with any of those items. That's ok, we had enough food but it wasn't clear why it didn't. It was good. Mofongo on its own is sort of bland and starchy. The guy next to me had a ketchup bottle of something that looked like thousand island dressing and after some pointing I eventually got my own bottle. It was pretty tasty but did kind of taste like sort-of spicy thousand island dressing. Not sure what kind of sauce it is officially. The potato croquette was good and cheap ($1.25). The green plantain one was not my favorite. The plantains were good. The mofongo and carne frita was good. We actually ordered another shrimp fritter ($4). It was pretty tasty. It's not clear if there is a DJ playing music all the time or this was just a special occasion. The margaritas were a little sweet. They used mortons table salt for the salt which doesn't really work too well (I didn't get salt on mine). Not sure that this is really a "margarita" sort of place. We eventually just started drinking Modelos. The area is a little bit of a rough area and the crowd might make some people nervous but everybody seemed to be ok with us being in there. Some of the tables eventually ended up with hookahs, which is surprisingly popular apparently in Springfield. The Puerto Rican dishes I've seen in there I have now seen in a number of other local establishments. If you're looking for more traditional Mexican food this is really a different thing. I'm glad I went. FYI other people seem to refer to this place as Restauran El Mofongo. They refused to give me a refund, and then an hour later they completed the order even though I had not picked up anything. They stole my money and refused to give me a refund. I received no food. Absolutely horrible service that steals from their customers and communities. I will never recommend this restaurant and will never be eating here.

I ordered the Filet Mignon. It was easily the second best steak I have ever been served. It was perfectly cooked, a sauce that was rich and flavorful was ladled on top with mushrooms. All around asparagus spears that were fresh and cooked to perfection. On the side was a product that I have never had the pleasure to try in the past. "Yuca" it is in many ways similar to potatoes, but smother and more flavorful. I will be back.

Had to ask 3x for to go boxes. We had a party of 4. Ask for the check and was given one for the whole table. Was told it could not be split up. When we told her we were not paying together and she needed to split the checks she left and came back with an attitude. There is no sign and no one communicates that they don't split checks or automatically add 18% gratuity onto your check. The service or food is not that good to have an automatic 18% gratuity added to the bill. There was one waitress/bartender so it took her awhile to get back to you. There is not many food choices on the menu.i really wanted to like this place.
