We have loved stopping at del's over the years on our way to Albuquerque but today was the last chance and done! Last time was bad enough that we told ourselves that this was their last chance and they blew it in multiple ways in what I will forever refer to as Del's fashion. Food: it used to be a favorite spot for our first New Mexican food coming from Oklahoma but last time our food was sub par and this time it was even worse. The chile both red and green were practically flavorless and seemed like mostly water and corn starch. We could have possibly chalked it up to just an off day but... THE FLIES! The flies began their assault as soon as our food arrived, first one, then two, then.... Not even a quarter way into our meal we were attempting to keep five flies off of our faces, arms, and especially our food! They were crawling all over our chips, sharing our enchiladas. We could get no relief. It was the worst I have ever seen flies in a food service establishment. Which leads us to... The staff. When we walked in the very unfriendly unprofessional and actually just rude "hostess" reluctantly took us to a table. Fine I could get over that. Our waitress was actually very nice and efficient so I feel sorry that she has to work there with that management and ownership after what happened next. I ask the devoid of any personality hostess if they have a fly swatter or something because at this point we aren't even able to pick up a fork to eat our food because of fly shooing and she just said HUH? and walks off not to be seen again. I finally walk to the cashier and ask to see a manager and end up having to explain the situation to three other waitresses before a truly hateful woman finally makes her way out of the kitchen so I explain again! This is the WORST experience ever with management in any establishment restaurant or not. Hateful,rude,unprofessional, and condescending she offered to box up our food so we can take it with us after the flies had their way with it for at least another ten minutes! I told her that we couldn't eat the food because it was contaminated and she so casually informed me that flies are a part of nature like she was educating me! She finally offered to take 10% off of our uneaten and now cold and fully contaminated with who knows what food. I told her that I would agree to pay 50% and just leave. She had to go ask the owner....another long wait and the owner was offering 50% off of only one entree out of two and a kids meal, a whole $8. So.... We paid $47 dollars to not eat and have to fight a flock of ninja flies and deal with rude, hateful, uncaring, ignorant, and money grubbing staff, manager, and owner. I will forever remember this horrific experience as one for the record books of worst restaurant experiences ever! Read others' bad reviews and judge for yourself if you are willing to throw away nearly $50 for absolutely nothing! Our experience here was absolutely OUTSTANDING! My wife has a gluten allergy and they had several options (no gf menu but they are quite knowledgeable about what is and is not safe) which worked out really well. First of all, gluten-free or not, this is a great restaurant. I will never forget what outstanding service I received when I ordered food to go (normally we would have dined in but we're traveling through with dogs and could not leave them in the room). I had called the night before to ask about gf options and got great information. But the service I got when I arrived there to order was so GREAT! The hostess walked me through the menu pleasantly and helpfully, and the server and register staff were fantastic! They provided me additional menu information, helped me order, provided me some containers to get salad (salad bar was quite good!), and after I went back to the front of the restaurant to wait for the order, the young man brought it out to me there instead of making me walk back over there. He even added some gravy for the chopped sirloin in case I needed some (I hadn't asked about it when ordering). Now, the food. The grilled chicken breast was moist and flavorful, and had a nice little char on the outside. The chopped sirloin was really excellent. Stop saying "yeah yeah it's basically a hamburger" because it's not. It also had a nice char on the outside, perfectly cooked to medium well (as I'd asked), very flavorful, and both the onions and mushrooms really complemented the dish well. I DID use the gravy, and that was just, well, GRAVY. Good gravy, too! Okay I'll knock off the puns. You get the point. Really good food, great service. Oh and a nice attached gift shop too. Even though we're just traveling through Tucumcari, I would suggest it might be worth a trip to Tucumcari just to eat at Del's. They are doing it right and I wish them well. A clean and homey place that is bigger on the inside than you expect once you walk in. This is NOT just a Mexican restaurant like Trinity's review on 3/13/19 says. They have beef, chicken, fish, and Mexican dishes. First off, my waitress was KAYLA and she was absolutely one of the best servers I've had in years. Personable, friendly, polite, not over-bearing or hovering, and beautiful. Thank you KAYLA!!! I had the chicken fried chicken with gravy and fries along with the salad bar. Have I had better chicken fried chicken? Yes. But it was good. The fries were hot and the salad bar was fully stocked, clean, and tasty. My bill, with a drink, was $13.34. Ravenous after a long day on the road, my family descended on this restaurant which is located on historic Rt 66! There were many vehicles parked around the restaurant, and a seater took our name. We killed time in the gift shop. When we were seated, Kayla took our drink orders and complimented us on our choice of a Prickly Pear Margarita. It was certainly exotic looking, but far too sweet for our palette until we balanced it with a heavy squeeze of lime. After our entrees were ordered, we enjoyed our farm-fresh salads from the bar. Even the soups were delicious. Every item I tasted from the salad bar was in prime condition. I think there were even mild hatch chilies in the line-up. Our steaks arrived and were cooked spot on. The NY strip was outstanding value for money and really juicy and tender with a few knots of gristle. The mashed potatoes were creamy, the baked potato was fluffy and fully loaded with a decadent cheddar cap on real bacon crumbles. However, I had no idea that the blackened steak was nuclear hot to our palettes. It was making me wince a bit, and was out of the question for my daughter. We sent the steak back for repair--and the kitchen scraped off the lovely crust, but tamed it just enough so that my daughter could tolerate some and I ate the rest. Throughout this adventure, our server Kayla, was attentive, efficient and very personable. To pacify the kids, we ordered a round of gigantic puffed sopapillas for all. laced with melted butter within and lashings of honey, they quenched the fire from the blackened steak. My wife had the grilled shrimp which were done perfectly - tender and not overdone to rubber. Service was great - prompt and friendly. This place is expensive & food wasn't very good. We ate here on our Route 66 trip & were disappointed. Reviews we had read talked about getting chips & hot sauce but we didn't get any, even though all other tables had them. My husband got the chicken fried steak, it looked big until he cut into it & the batter just fell off, you could see that a lot of the extra size was just batter. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce, if you want something thy taste at least a little like Italian food this ain't it. Only good thing here was the salad bar. In small town places like this, I find that sometimes the handy dandy yelp doesn't always perform well, so I like to ask around. Word of mouth works wonders I tell you! At the meeting I was in town to attend for work, I didn't even have to ask! One of the guys running the show actually mentioned Del's. Before the meeting even started he wanted to make sure that we didn't run into the lunch hour so that he could be sure to make it to Del's before it got busy. I wrote Del's down on the corner of my paper. Little did I know I didn't need to write it down, he mentioned it several more times before our meeting ended! LOL! He raved about the steak finger, chicken fried steak and the chicken tenders. Oh, and the salad bar, is apparently a thing. To be honest, as soon as the meeting ended I made my way over to check em out. The restaurant is big, plenty of seating and clean. I did make it there as soon as they opened. I think there may have been about three two tops. The staff are dressed uber cute in matching flannel shirts and cowboy boots. I asked the opinion of the hostess before ordering and she also said the steak fingers. So it was settled. I placed an order to go. $13 for the plate. A little steep I thought, but I was anticipating a treat! They also gave me another small to go box and cup and lid to browse the salad bar! Okay! The salad bar was fully stocked with salad greens, different pasta salads and veggie salads along with a chicken veggie soup and pinto beans. It was surely a smorgasbord of goodies. A nice addition to your meal. Not to mention my steak fingers already came with a side. I got broccoli. I packed up some things and before I knew it my food was done. I grabbed it and hit the road back into Albuquerque! Warning. I must disclose that my review on the taste of the food was indeed in the car. While I was driving (one of my guilty pleasure) but i do not recommend eating and driving! I have to tell you. It smelled so good, I couldn't help but take a look, and then when I saw it, I couldn't help but taste it. And then it was over, I couldn't stop. The steak fingers were soft and the batter was crunchy. They were cooked perfectly. They serving was gigantic! I also had my salad bar sides too! Next time I will make sure to stay and eat. We drove cross country moving from CA to MO. We stopped in Tucumcari for the night just to stay at the Blue Swallow Inn. The town is very small and many businesses appeared to be vacant. It felt like we were in a deserted town so we got dinner recommendations from staff. Del's was one of the two she recommended. Del's had the best neon signage, which swayed my vote. I was on Route 66 after all. This place has a gift shop within the restaurant so you can pick up souvenirs if you need. We had a simple meal here. My meal came with the salad bar. There were options but not a ton of "green" ingredients or lettuce options. This is more of your iceberg or mixed salad with ranch sort of salad bar. Our waiter was cordial, but he definitely did not seem overly elated to be at work. I ordered the smothered chicken (10.99) because I just could not do any more beef. It is grilled and topped with peppers, mushrooms and Swiss cheese. I opted for a baked potato as the side. It was good - nothing noteworthy. Service was prompt. All in all, it was our best bet in Tucumcari. If you are in Tucumcari for the Blue Swallow Inn, then I recommend Del's as it is just a few blocks away. read more

I got the chicken quesadilla which was a very greasy on the outside, not sure why. Flavor was good but all the grease made it harder to eat. Nacho chips with cheese and jalapeño is literally just chips and shredded cheese, I was assuming it was going to actually be nacho cheese. Salsa was ok, could use a little more spice. We were traveling through on an extremely cold night, and we wanted some hot soup to go. I called ahead to order bowls of soup, and salad to go. My husband was worried about being able to eat the soup in the car, however they packaged it in large styrofoam cups which fit easily in our cup holders. I used vinegar as my dressing with plenty of green olives and sunflower seeds. The salsa that came with the chips was delicious- good flavor and no cilantro! (I'm one of THOSE people, lol). I ordered a plain baked potato with "Christmas". I happened to have tofutti vegan sour cream with me in our cooler, so I smuggled some in my purse to top my potato with (along with nutritional yeast) and that was an extra bonus. They also had steamed broccoli, applesauce, and veggie fajitas as options. I didn't ask about whether the beans or rice were vegan - sorry! Placed a to-go order, it was piping hot and fresh. I got the veggie fajitas with a side of rice and beans. The seasoning on the fajitas is mouth watering good.
