The place is a landmark and has been in business since 1956, during that time it served many people on the old Route 66 and anytime I can I stop and eat. For me it's a chance to eat a great meal in a place that screams character with a capital "C", if you are expecting McDonalds this isn't your place. Del's was recommended by our hotel when we stopped in Tucumcari our way back to Arizona. I ordered the baked beef chimichanga and was glad I did. It was so good -shredded beef which was moist and tasty and the toppings just added more flavor. My husband ordered a combo plate as he normally does. He liked his combo plate, but when I gave him a few bites of my chimichangas, he thought my chimichanga beat his combo late by a long shot. great. This restaurant is a hidden jewel. The meal was outstanding with rock star service. The huge soup and salad bar was amazing with a lot of choices. I had a sirloin steak and it melted in my mouth. My husband had the the chicken and shrimp and the portion was large and very yummy. Our waitstaff Jackie was very attentive and gave excellent service!! Our dinner at Dells wasn't very good. My friend ordered steak with mushrooms, loaded baked potato and green beans. She had maybe a tablespoon of mushrooms on her steak, her green beans were so soggy and over done she couldn't eat it. I ordered chicken fried steak loaded potato and had the salad from the salad bar. Both our potatoes didn't have butter, the sour cream was questionable too. My chicken fried steak was so over cooked I could barely cut it with a knife much less chew it. The salad bar was subpar, most of the bar looked like it had been sitting out all day and not freshened up. We finally gave up and decided to go, we couldn't find our waitresses. We waited a good while, and decided to go to the front counter so we could leave. After paying for a horrible meal and service, we walk outside only to find our waitresses making out with her boyfriend infront of our car. Mind you my friend and I aren't in the habit of complaining, she didn't want me to say anything so we left. It bothered me that we paid $80+ for our meal, we had been traveling all day for this. NO! This is why I'm leaving this review with one star I would leave no stars. This establishment came recommended to us which makes it very sad to know that we had a terrible experience. read more

I'm staying in a hotel and placed an order at Del's. I didn't know they had outdoor dining so when I came to pickup my food my wife and I ask if we could eat outside even though we ordered it to go. A nice young man said no problem so my wife sat down outside and I went inside to explain what we would like to do. The gentleman who took my order said that we could not eat outside since I ordered it to go. He then ask if i was from Texas or Albuquerque and that they do things different here in Tucumcari. He brought my food and sat it down and I paid another lady and I said was he serious and she said yes because the outdoor server would have to clean it up and it was all about who to tip. Oh well i stay in this town several times each summer and I will not return. read more

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! We actually drove over 500 miles out of our way just to get some sopapillas from this place. What a awesome little hidden gem!!! The restaurant is clean and fairly spacious. The food, although a bit overpriced, wasn't anything spectacular but it was better than the normal fast food you'd get on a road trip. My wife and I stayed overnight in town on our way back home. Followed Yelp's suggestion and visited Del's. Loved the retro and authentic Route 66 decor from the first step in. We both got a margarita with an extra shot. Was good. She got a brisket burrito and I got the fried chicken strips and butterfly shrimp. We both were happy with our meals. Leo was our server and was absolutely awesome. Hostess was very polite as well. They offer patio dining during Covid- but no liquor allowed on the patio right now. Ask Leo to tell you stories about the building and Route 66 on which it is located. read more

I didn't have the best experience here. We came an hour before they closed for the evening. It was incredibly busy when we arrived. The sweet tea was barely that; I asked for Dr. Pepper as a replacement. When our dinners came, I was shocked at the portion sizes. My sister got a chicken fried steak which looked huge, my mango salsa chicken looked anemic next to it. I would expect to get two chicken breasts for the price, not just one. Dinner comes with one side plus soup and salad. Why is everything garnished with kale? I enjoyed the chicken tortilla soup, my sister enjoyed the pinto beans. read more

My wife had grilled chicken with rice pilaf. It was good. I had the sirloin steak (medium well) with baked potato. The steak had gristle throughout. I'm so glad we found this place on our trip from Amarillo to Santa Fe! The decor is fun (the gift shop was great and allowed us to buy the souvenirs we forgot about along the way). The wait staff is super friendly and the food was great. I had chicken strips and mashed potatoes, it all was homemade. Even the BBQ sauce tasted like it was made right there. My rib-eye entree came with the salad bar and my wife had the Mexican chicken fried steak with the salad bar. Both were excellent and my wife couldn't finish hers. I have never attempted a cross country car trip before so when it was time to do the planning I left it to the pro. The sig-o has braved the transcontinental journey at least twice. We left San Diego bound for a small town about an hour away from the East Coast in South Carolina. When I looked at his itinerary I saw our first stop was in Flagstaff, Arizona. So far so good. Then I glanced at the second day and saw we would end up in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Even Eric Yang the last winner of the National Geographic Bee couldn't identify this place on a United State map. Plus the name sounds like something that would would garner a ruler to the hand if you said it out loud in a church. But I digress. We checked in to our hotel with the goal to find some dinner. I fired up both Yelp and TravelAdvisor hoping to find a gem in the rough. We ended up deciding to go to Del's Restaurant which offers a mix of American and Mexican fare. The reviews seemed favorable enough but since I had already seen what the Tucumcari Hospital looked like, I knew if we got food poisoning we were in for a long night. We were quickly seated and there seemed to be a legion of servers roaming about the restaurant. I have become accustomed to only seeing unsweet iced tea west of the Mississippi River so when I ordered an iced tea and the waiter said "sweet or unsweet" I just about passed out. We decided to order from the Mexican side of the menu as penance for eating hamburgers on Cinco de Mayo plus the fact that we were in Tex-Mex country. I had the the enchiladas and a taco and the sig-o ordered the beef chimichangas. The salsa and chips was just ok. The salsa wasn't spicy enough for me. The rice and beans were good but nothing to get excited about. The enchiladas and chimichangas were very good (make sure to get the salsa verde, very tasty). The highlight of the meal was the sopapilla at the end. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the food here and would go back. Service was also good. Hopefully this review helps any other tired and hungry traveler who stops in Tucumcari, New Mexico with the same concerns I had. read more
