T-Bone Steak & Country Fried Steak Entrees

Wow, I hadn't been to Denny's in forever, since like, college, because it was open 24/7 and drunk college kids need pancakes, damnit! So you can imagine how unexpected it was to find myself at a Denny's during our Arizona road trip. Out of desperation, it was our dinner for the night. After rolling into Chinle late and checking into the hotel, we needed to find a restaurant that was open after 8pm. We had no idea this would be so challenging, but since we were on reservation land, there were not very many places open late. Thanks to Yelp, we learned that there was a Denny's around, which was the only restaurant open past 8pm. Word. So we went to Denny's and it looked exactly like it did in college except we noticed there was no lounge area or drunk college kids. After a long day on the road and hiking, we were looking forward to kicking back with some booze, but didn't see a drinks menu. We then asked our server about this which is when we learned that they do not have alcohol on the reservation. OH! Just diner food for us then. It's been a minute since I've been to a diner, especially a Denny's diner. But I was impressed with all that was offered, including a breakfast menu that's served all day. My partner ordered a T-bone steak while I had the country fried steak entree. Once the food came, it was as you'd expect from Denny's - A-OK. It's Denny's for crying out loud! The country fried steak was tender, potatoes were meh and the squash was oily. At least there was a gravy train to smother it all in. If you're looking for a late night option, late being past 8pm, then Denny's is here for you in Chinle, Arizona. The food was A-OK as it always is and the time was memorable as it may not have been when you're a college kid. Gotta love it.

We were looking to eat at another restaurant in Chinle but it had already closed. So we opted to give this Dennys a try. I have been raving about the Dennys in St. Michaels for a month now. So I was interested to see if this location was as good. We were greeted by a wonderful young lady that promptly seated us and gave us menus. Then another nice young man came to take our drink orders. The restaurant is very clean and wasn't very busy. With the exception of the bathroom that could use some cleaning. Our drinks came and we told our server what we wanted. My wife chose the T-bone steak dinner and I opted for the Slamburger with fries. I had the same burger in St. Michaels a couple of days ago. So I was anxious to see if this was as good. We waited patiently and enjoyed each others company and talked about what an awesome week we have had visiting family in the area. It wasn't long and our food arrived. It really looked great. My burger was on point! As were the fries. My wife said her dinner was really good except the steak was pretty dry. But it was well seasoned. She ordered it medium well and it was definitely well done. Over all it was a great dining experience and I highly recommend this Dennys. The staff was very friendly and they have great attitudes. Which is nice to see these days. We would definitely visit this location again!

Have been a customer here since they opened up several years ago. One of the few restarants in Chinle and the only one that opens before 7 am. Think I gave this place 5 stars when it first opened and now 3 stars. Food and pricing are consistent. They provide a 15% AARP discount. This week if you come back you get 20% discount on your bill. We have had the same server each day. We affectionately call him 50/50. He gets the order right about 50% of the time. He tries to remember the order in his head but must have a short memory. Have been leaving pens on the table from the hotel. Hopefully he will start to use it to write down the order. Not sure if they are on a POS system. Will undoubtely will be back.

To be honest, I really didn't want to review this Denny's in Chinle. I'll do my best, and hope it is taken as constructive. The biggest reason we came here, was to eat breakfast early. Since it's open early and is close to where my brother in law has to teach his class. Plus he has a specific hour that his class has to begin. So here we are seated at Denny's getting ready for breakfast on our first morning here in Chinle. Our server came up to our table and we noticed he didn't have anything to write our order down with. So my brother in law orders his breakfast and then I ordered mine. So we are both sipping our coffee, and our server brings us both our breakfast. Well, my order was correct but, my brother in law's isn't. So when we left the bill was adjusted accordingly for the error in the order. On our second morning we decide lets try Denny's again. So we go in, get seated and here comes the same server as yesterday morning. We figured, lets try one more time. So we are ready to order our breakfast. The server takes our order, nothing to write our order with, once again. Here we are sipping on our coffee, and the server brings out our order. This time it was my turn. My order wasn't correct. So I mentioned to him I didn't order this part of the breakfast, so he takes it back and corrects my order, and again the bill was adjusted our bill as well. I can't explain what happened here since with our server, as I wasn't in on the conversation with the person doing the cooking and the instructions given by the server. Who knows, only that it happened two mornings in a row. We obviously did not return the next morning. This is an account of our breakfast experience at Denny's.

I haven't visited a cafeteria in maybe ten years, it's certainly a rare occurrence and a fun diversion for some food! In this case, we went for breakfast since we were staying at the Lodge and opted to share a stack of pancakes. The cafeteria is a bit unique in that there's both a traditional line to pick up prepared food, but there's also a menu that can be ordered from for freshly cooked food. Blue Corn Pancakes, 3 ($10) - These are plate sized pancakes, really fluffy, cooked perfectly moist on the griddle. There's only a really slight blue color and a tiny bit of grittiness from blue corn flour. There's a bit of corn flavor, but it's otherwise resembles a regular pancake more than anything. I'd guess the mix is more wheat flour than blue corn flour. Still, even for regular pancakes, this is pretty good. It comes with three tubes of maple flavored corn syrup and some salted butter on top. We decided to revisit for dinner, mostly for convenience since we were staying at the Lodge. Homemade Mutton Stew w/ Frybread ($15) - This is a pretty simple stew, filled with vegetables, including hand chopped canned tomatoes, carrots, celery, and potatoes. There's some, not a ton, of cubed mutton, which quite tender and is surprisingly not as gamey as the smell would indicate. It's all in a broth that's heavily vegetable forward, followed by a tomato umami, and then finishing with a slight mutton gaminess. It's very simple, hearty fare and similar to most other food in the Navajo Nation, isn't seasoned much, so it could be considered bland. The stew comes with a choice of frybread or tortilla. We went with both, paying an extra $2.85 for the tortilla ala carte. The frybread is fried pretty well, giving a nice crisp edge. It's puffy and chewy on the sides, flatter in the center - there's nothing wrong with the base mix, but unfortunately the amount of fry oil contained in the frybread is terrible. I mean, there was basically an entire puddle of soot-speckled dark-colored old fryer oil right soaking right in the center of the frybread in a pool. Bleh. Tortilla ($2.85) - I believe this is the same base used as the frybread, but then baked instead of fried. It's like a thicker/handmade Mexican flour tortilla. It's thick and chewy, a bit bready, and has a dry char taste. Thunderbird Lodge Cafeteria is a decent spot for food in the area. There honestly aren't many restaurants in general in Chinle; this place serves food that isn't special by any means, but also isn't unpalatable. Just be aware that they follow the more traditional method of Navajo seasoning - basically no salt or spices. Bathrooms - Two larger ones with multiple stalls

Since we had a long day ahead of us on the road, we needed to grab breakfast and didn't want to waste time finding a place around, which is few and far between! Therefore, here we were at Garcia's. The menu featured a handful of basic breakfast items. My partner had an omelette, which came with hash browns while I had the blue corn pancakes. When our plates arrived, I had no idea the pancakes were gigantic and there was a stack of three of them! I barely made a dent in them, so we took the pancakes for leftovers, which we snacked on for our road trip! For the pancakes, they provided packaged syrup, which I wasn't a fan of. But I actually liked the pancakes on their own, as I could really taste the blue corn. Overall, this is a fine restaurant for breakfast. It's here to primarily serve the hotel guests and perhaps those visiting Canyon De Chelly. But there's nothing special here. It's your standard fare.

So we took a drive to the road that takes you to the Chinle Hospital. Just as you turn at the light, just to your right is a small food truck like place where the Burrito Lady has her business. We walk up to the trailer, looked at the menu that sits right next to where you order. I saw the Roasted Mutton Sandwich, so we both ordered it. She asked us if we wanted it on a tortilla and fry bread, so we both said fry bread, and ordered our drink as well. The Roasted Mutton Sandwich is comes folded like a taco on Indian fry bread, stuffed with the Roasted Mutton, long slices of green chili, green onion, and tomato. What made this sandwich taste so good is the flavor of the Roasted Mutton, and of course the Indian fry bread. For those of you that have never had Mutton, you have to understand that it is fully cooked, and is an acquired taste. I first had Mutton in Tuba City at their daily swap meet at noon. It was grilled and was filled with similar like this one in Chinle. The way they cook it makes it real tasty. This is my story on my special lunch in Chinle. Hope some day you have an eating experience like mine.

This is also another one of those times I will be a devils advocate among my fellow yelpers and elites alike. Seeing most bad reviews here it seems to be due to long wait times and broken kiosk: But come on people, what does that have to do with the employees, the food or the restaurant? To a point yes but prime season when a bus and herd of tourists pulls up to the few employees thats available here in the middle of nowhere, what do you expect?? I came during off season, beautiful weather, definitely less people, no issues with kiosk or better yet some need to learn how to use mobile app to order their food like i did and got my food quick without issues. Compared to many McDonalds I have visited in many cities and states, this was actually one of my better experiences especially being in the middle of nowhere. Place was clean! Employees were super attentive to look around to clean and mop immediately as people left the tables. In Los Angeles, some employees can care less. The kids play area was also well kept and clean.
