These strike me as features you want in a pediatric dental practice. Now, the bad. In summary: the dentist we saw made recommendations that contradict major medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization, and the American Dental Association, as well as our own pediatrician. The dentist we saw was unprofessional and overbearing, and the lecture he subjected me to bordered on harassment. The recommendations he made were outside his areas of expertise, contradicted recent medical studies, and seemed to be based on his personal opinion. I took my 2-year-old daughter for her first dentist appointment yesterday. We saw Dr. Williams. Before he even looked in my daughter's mouth, he noticed that I had checked the box for "nursing" on our form. He asked if this was true, and I told him that we nurse once before bed, and then brush her teeth. He accused me of nursing only for my own emotional benefit, and told me I was serving as a "human pacifier." I found this condescending and humiliating, and was stunned that a medical professional would speak to me in this way. He recommended switching to a plastic pacifier instead, which I told him contradicted what I had read about pacifier use on the American Dental Association website. Dr Williams went on to tell me that nursing "has no nutritional benefit at this age", a claim that has been widely disproved in recent studies. I told him as much, and he interrupted me to ask if my daughter eats "baby food." She eats regular food, in fact, but we have discussed with her pediatrician the benefits of continued nursing to her developing digestive system. He ignored this, and continued to berate me for nursing, without looking at my daughter's teeth. He told me that nursing would increase her chances of getting ear infections, which is both the exact opposite of what every medical study says, and the exact opposite of our own experience (my daughter has never had an ear infection). Dr Williams shared an anecdote in which he was invited to speak at a La Leche League meeting (he called it "the lesh society"), and explained disparagingly that this was a group of women who insisted on nursing your kids until they're six (an inaccurate characterization of the organization). He laughed that he was never invited back. At this point I began to suspect that his opposition to nursing was based more on his personal preferences than any medical information. Note that none of his arguments against nursing had anything to do with teeth or oral health, and in one case contradicted ADA recommendations about oral health. After saying several more times that we had discussed the matter with my daughter's doctor, and would take our recommendations on nursing from the doctor, I firmly interrupted his tirade. I said that we were there to have him look at my daughter's teeth, so could he please examine her for any tooth decay? I am capable of doing my own research on breastfeeding, and will ask my pediatrician if I have any questions. He finally performed a perfunctory exam of my daughter's teeth and proclaimed her free from any decay. Dr Williams concluded the appointment by comparing breastfeeding to giving my daughter "five cups of Mountain Dew" every night before bed. Never mind that we brush her teeth afterwards, and never mind that Mtn Dew and breast milk are nutritionally incomparable. Then he had the nerve to include "nutritional counseling" as a line item on our bill. In case you're curious, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization both recommend nursing until "at least" age 1, ideally age 2 "and beyond" (those phrases are quotes from their websites). The American Dental Association defers to these organizations in their guidelines, and recognizes the overall health benefits of nursing when paired with good oral hygiene such as brushing the teeth before bed.

The whole thing went by. And I didn't feel any pain at all it was the best filling I've had , especially since it was my first . Not sure where to start with this review! We were overly excited to take my son to this dentist…read morebecause it's very kid friendly. The office decor is super kiddy and very colorful. My son who's very shy and attached to us (parents) wiggles down and went to go play with other kids which is shocking to us a bit. So that's the positive side! Ok, now here's my mistake. Our dental insurance covers almost everywhere but apparently this place was out of network. Ok my bad, I should have checked before I got there. But they way they treated us was so poorly. The assistant seemed like she didn't want to take care of us at all. She was waiting for the "OK" if our insurance covered or not before she took my son back. And the big guy at the receptionist desk was just bluntly rude and stuck up. He had that I'm better than you kind of attitude. Also, front desk people were dressed like bums. You would think you would have your staff dressed more appropriately and no it wasn't a causal Friday. Another thing is after the visit with the doctor, generally kids get to pick/or given a sticker or prize. Nope not my son, he didn't exist to them apparently. Anyways, the other positive thing is that Dr. Rice was fantastic! He was very friendly and attentive. It would be nice if his staff was trained the same way.

Up until this last week, we would have recommended this group over and over again. I actually did…read morerecommend to someone on Tuesday, the day before the event occurred. Last week, both of my kids had a dental appointment(5/18) and both ended up throwing up that morning. I called and rescheduled their appointments for Wednesday (5/27) . My husband has been deployed the last 2 months and I work an 8-5 job in healthcare. He came home and was able to put in leave immediately to take them to their dental appointment on Wednesday. On Tuesday night,after my 10 hour work day, I notice my text messages asking me to confirm the appointments, so I responded we would be there so they knew we were coming. I noticed a call coming in around 8:30am on Wednesday morning. I recognized the number and was not with a patient, so I was able to answer. I was informed that our appointments were cancelled because we did not confirm the appointment. Like I mentioned, I work in healthcare. We absolutely do not (&have never at any of the places I've worked) cancel appointments due to not having confirmation . People plan around appointments, take leave and time off around appointments. And while I completely understand that the offices time (& providers time) is valuable, my time is valuable as well. We have decided to change offices and providers. When I schedule an appointment, I make plans and make arrangements to keep the appointment. Especially since this specific appointment was scheduled the week before.

This office was able to get us in very quickly, placed a crown on her front tooth. The staff did such a great job comforting my daughter, keeping her calm. She's almost 7 now and the crown is still in perfect condition. I was so happy with this experience, I later went on to get a job here. I called Southern Illinois Pediatric dentist and the staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. They were able to get us in the next day. The hygienists and dentist were fantastic working with a 12 month old. I'm sure that filing down a tooth on a baby is similar to wrangling a cat. They educated us in what we would need to look out for as she got older. We've been back twice since then for cleanings, and I have been impressed with the office and medical staff every time. We moved further away from Columbia but we'll continue to drive the distance to stay with the practice.

I let him due 4, just incase it was painful because I don't remember my wisdom teeth pain 40 years ago, he was not happy about that and told me they could all get infected and he wouldn't be able to fit me in for doing it slowly, glad I only did 4! They pulled them on a Friday, the pain I suffered all weekend was literally excruciating, Monday I went in crying and he yelled at me about smoking a cigarette, I tried to tell him no I couldn't even smoke as he pulled out a tiny fragment of a noodle he put on the tip of his finger and yelled what is this?? Not knowing what that was, I was too scared of him to do anything else, I cried for pain meds of some sort, I haven't ever had pain meds for anything, not even having children, he gave me a couple days of Norco and that really doesn't help dental pain!!
