I was called and told by the receptionist that my kids were due for their checkup. I should have checked my calendar cause it didn't seem like it had been 6 months already, so I asked if it had, and she said yes, they were on the list. I asked her to see if there was availability for both of my kids at the same time. She gave me a date of 2 days later, first thing in the morning. We arrived with 4 other families, all there for the same time slot when there's only 2 doctors. I waited 20 minutes and noticed the 2 front office people looking at some information and going back and forth, then they called me up. I was told they made a mistake and it was too early for my kids' checkups. They weren't due for another month. We have to drive about 25 minutes to get to Kids World Pediatric Dentistry. It was a weekday morning; I'm missing meetings, my kids were missing testing, all to take a long drive and be told they weren't going to be seen because they didn't do their do diligence and check insurance information prior to appointments. She gave me a very ungenuine apology. Needless to say, I was very frustrated. I calmly but sternly let her know we wouldn't be retuning. Dr. Torres and the office manager should review their front of the office processes and training. Also, take into consideration other people's schedules. Maybe not set up 5 appointments all at the same time slot, just to keep 3 of those waiting unnecessarily.

I took my children here on two different occasions before deciding that this place was not meant for me. Here is why: The staff , although I am sure is very well trained, is not certified in how to actually talk to children. My daughter was horrified to go to the dentist and I received absolutely no help from any of the nurses to calm her or make her feel more comfortable. They used techniques like bribing for a gold coin and doing what is good for the teeth. When she absolutely would not sit for the hygienist, I asked for the Doctor to come in. Surely, she would be better at working with children. Wrong. In fact, there were a lot of blank stares at me and making me feel bad that my kid hates the dentist. My son, on the other hand, was very easy to work with, but they wouldn't give him the packet of toothbrush and paste (because he was too young). Huh? He cried all the way home. I found a dentist (who doesn't specialize in children) but you could have fooled me. They didn't have to bribe or trick - they just got on their level and explained everything to them. Kids are little people that deserve explanation. The people at Childrens Dentist are amateurs at customer service.

The final straw was being told my appointment wasn't confirmed, even though I had received a call and confirmed it. I was told, "We have a virtual assistant and a customer service person, so I'm not sure who you spoke to--they must not have communicated." That level of disorganization is unacceptable. She sends out both email reminders for appointments and automated phone calls for confirmation. Her work area is clutter free and organized. My husband took our son to our son's consultation appointment. He was assured there that we could escort our son (who has Autism) in his appointments. However, when I tried to sit in during the impressions, I was asked to leave. I tried to assure the technicians that I would not get in the way, the dentist pulled me aside and proceeded to lecture me about my presence in the room being a distraction and causing harm to my son. After exchanging other words with the orthodontist, Dr. Moore hinted that I should find another orthodontist because "the failure of the [orthodontic] experience depends entirely on what happens at home." When I tried to end the conversation, stating that I would just shut my mouth and go sit in the waiting room, he proceeded to lecture me. So, why did I allow the appointment to continue? Because the doctor was not so condescending toward my husband, my regular dentist--who is professional and whose opinion, I trust--referred us to Dr. Moore, and, more importantly, my son is already familiar with Dr. Moore from his first appointment and seems fine with him so far. Dr. Moore said that they have treated numerous patients with Autism and report no traumatic experiences. Perhaps my physical appearance (no makeup, concert t-shirt, shorts, tattoos) did not convey that I am a concerned and involved parent who has earned a Master's Degree, thus, causing him to prejudge me or see a need to issue a lecture. Regardless, my husband will be attending the majority of appointments with my son from now on, and all instructions for my son's care will be followed to the letter (e.g. Dr. Moore suggested having my son hold a Tic Tac to the roof of his mouth to try to teach his tongue to rest higher, which might help improve his speech impairment--who knows, it couldn't hurt!).
