I don't have an issue with parking ordinances as a whole. There are valid reasons for them. I DO have a problem when parking ordinances are selectively and inaccurately enforced, and when there isn't a sensible way to resolve a dispute for a ticket that was clearly written in error. I recently received a ticket for parking too long in a 2 hour zone. Problem: I was clearly parked in a short but well marked "all day" zone on an otherwise 2 hour street, and took pics to prove it. When my written dispute was rejected, I went to the magistrate and learned that your pictures count for little if Google street view can't corroborate your pictures for the magistrate. Is the sign that proves your point is blurry or out of the Google street view frame? Tough luck. The "selective" enforcement issue tends to arise for tickets around distances from markers, e.g. no parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, or 18 inches of the curb, etc. Enforce it by the book, or don't enforce it...but enforcing the rule 10% of the time, as in my neighborhood, just pisses people off who've parked 6ft away from crosswalks for months with no ticket, and suddenly get their wrist slapped. Don't bother disputing. The law is clear, but enforcement isn't. Two stars instead of one because my magistrate wasn't outright rude, and the wait was short. And though it should have been waived since it was invalid to begin with, I did get my ticket reduced. Really, City of Denver, do you want 99% of your populace to feel wrath at your parking division? A little training and encouragement to use common sense would go a long way. I wonder if any major US cities have parking enforcement bureaus with positive Yelp ratings? read more

Cherry Creek North Needs a Short-Stay Parking Option I'm a Cherry Creek North resident who stopped for under 5 minutes to run a quick errand. By the time I got back to my car, I already had a $30 ticket. The problem isn't the cost of parking - it's that there's no grace period for short stops. If you need even 5 minutes, you're expected to open an app and process a payment before you step foot in a store. That's an unreasonable burden for anyone popping in and out quickly. Many cities offer a 15-minute free window for exactly this kind of errand. It keeps foot traffic moving, makes the neighborhood feel more welcoming, and doesn't punish residents for a quick stop. Cherry Creek is a great area, but aggressive enforcement like this makes people think twice about stopping here at all - and that's bad for local businesses too. Received a $350.00 parking ticket in a handicap slot at the hospital. Placard was in the glove box. This price is gouging citizens. We thought we could show the current placard validating its appropriate use so we went to court. The Judge first states no excuses for non visual placard. No comments allowed, only questions. I am an RN at Denver Health. I parked in the visitor parking lot because we don't have any visitors right now with COVID. I received a parking ticket and called 888-280-9988 to dispute the ticket. The phone call dropped many times in our attempts to call. I talked to an agent and it was still not in the system. She said to try parksmartdenver.com. I came to the website but the citation number did not pull up anything. I told the agent this, and I tried multiple times and it was still not on the system more than 10 days after the ticket. I thought that this was because of COVID. I was waiting for things to start re-opening in CO before trying to dispute the ticket again. I then received a late fee in the mail on 5/13/20. I called and the agent I spoke to said the late fee is still valid. He was incredibly RUDE. He was condescending and gave robotic answers. I called in on 5/13/2020 at 4:21 p.m., and then again at 4:27 p.m. after the phone called dropped after dialing '1' and then '6' to talk to an agent. Their automated system is terrible and the agent I spoke to today insisted that it is not. My husband and I both have had phone calls randomly drop each time that we have attempted to call. The agent I talked to today needs to be retrained on customer service and kindness. He treated a nurse during COVID like crap. Instead of responding to my, "Have a nice day" after our conversation, he hung up the phone on me. I'm sorry you're having a rough day, but you can only imagine what us nurses are dealing with right now. So this jerk law firm sends me endless "DELINQUENCY NOTICES" demanding payment for a parking violation dating from 2002. Not 2012. 2002. That would be 11 . . . e-l-e-v-e-n years ago. I write a polite letter telling one of the senior partners at the firm that I didn't park illegally 11 years ago in Denver and that the license plate, the car description, and tag number listed on the notice don't match any I've ever owned or driven. What do I get back in response to my polite letter? Nada. Bupkis. Zilch. Zero. Oh, that's not true. Sorry. I do get more and more and more delinquency notices from those dipnerds. So I call up the Denver Parking Violations Bureau and after many minutes on hold get to talk with a lady you can just tell has heard every lame brain excuse imaginable a gazillion times. She's efficient and courteous, but no one could accuse her of being bubbly or friendly or cheerful. But, today, for the first time (not my first complaint to the DPVB about this ticket), I'm told that the reason the law firm has been dunning me is that it (the DPVB) sent the citation to the car's owner (which turned out to be Enterprise Car Rental) who got back in touch with the DPVB and told them that I, David "Emin" M, had been renting the car at the time the ticket had been issued. "Aha!" I exclaimed (semi-) excitedly, when Ms. Efficiency told me that. "Now, for the first time in 11 years," I said, "we can get to the bottom of this" (her notes indicated that back in 2002 near the time of the ticket, I had called and said the ticket wasn't mine and that I didn't own or drive the described car). I politely asked her to just send me a copy of the signed rental agreement that shows I had rented the car during that period. I told her if that was the case, then of course I'd be glad (?:) to pay the ticket . . . or at least I'd pay it. Now here comes the part where DPVB earns its 1 star policy rating . . . ya ready? . . . Here's what she tells me after I ask for a copy of the signed rental agreement . . . "Oh, we don't have it. When we sent the ticket to Enterprise they told us you had rented the car during the time of the ticket and so they were no longer responsible." WHAT!!! Lemme get this right. The next time I get a ticket, I just need to do what Enterprise did (and I assume all the other car rental companies do), just call up the DPVB and tell them that I'd lent my car to Joe Schmoe at that time, and Joe's responsible for the ticket, and that will be enough to show so that I no longer owe the ticket???!!!??? If I could give zero stars, I would. I would say everyone has paid a parking ticket at least once in their lives for parking illegally, and received a ticket for it. My case, is sort of different. I definitely acknowledge the fact that I was parked illegally for probably no more than 2 minutes downtown. Never got a ticket, never saw a meter maid, went about my business. I get a form in the mail from the City and County of Denver stating that I owe them $25 plus an additional $25 for a late fee. I'm dumbfounded at this point because I haven't ever received a parking ticket. I call to get some info regarding this ticket and the "friendly lady" on the other end says that the "officer" (meter - maid is what they are) attempted to serve me a ticket and I was very argumentative and refused the ticket. Well, when I live close enough to town to get e-minders (love that Laura) about moving my car. I will stick to haaaaaating you. I run in to get fro-yo in Cherry Creek. I get a $50 ticket....half of which I don't even know why. I should have just parked in CC and paid the $1 for parking. Received 2 tickets 1 week apart. The first ticket was for meter parking being out of time....I paid using the app and the parking person decided to be lazy and not run my plates but instead take the time to write the ticket. I was able to get the ticket dismissed since I could show proof. On top of that, the parking person wrote my license plate down incorrectly resulting in some confusion when I had to dispute it. This week was my fault and forgot to pay after my time was up, I expected a ticket since I was 30 min late to pay via the app. However, the parking person decided to be a real asshole and also ticket me for no front plate ($75). I own a Jeep Wrangler and if anyone has seen those cars, they are made without a place to put a front license plate. The person could have written me a "fix it" ticket which I could figure out a way to jerry-rigged the license plate on either with zipties or another way but no. These people clearly have a quota and clearly make it obvious that when they get in trouble they will take it out on you if they see your car again. It was the same person who ticketed me the first time and I know for a fact they were talked to since the person on the phone (had to call to verify the ticket was dismissed) apologized and stated the person didn't do their job properly. Hello, I've now reached out to a local Denver news channel to try and shed light on the recent gross negligence from the Denver Parking Violations Bureau. Below is my plea for help letter I wrote to one of our Denver news channels, I think it is worth the read. Hello, Just an FYI, I have never contacted a news channel before regarding any issue until now. Ok, this is a growing City of Denver issue in my neighborhood and it's quite scary if you ask me. First off, I moved to Colorado in 1990 and I've lived and worked full-time in down town Denver the last 23 years so I've obviously seen and adapted to a lot of change with down town over the years. The scary issue that has arose in the last 6 months is gross negligence from the City of Denver street parking enforcement lately. I've called the Denver police dept. and even called City of Denver representatives and filed complaints, but it falls on def ears and no one can help, that's the scary part. I park directly in front of my house in the (Baker neighborhood) using city issued permit parking which they enforce heavily, but that's not the issue, the issue is that I keep getting tickets from neglectful parking authority officers that are not paying attention, or are careless about weather you have a permit, or not. Last week I received another ticket for not having a permit while being parked in front of my house when my permit has been clearly hanging from my rear view mirror the entire time. they refuse to look and just issue unlawful false tickets without a care in the world. I just received another ticket today in a different location a half a block from my front door that is clearly marked "no permit parking required" and STILL got a no permit ticket! This is the 4th false ticket I've received in the last 6 months and there is no end in sight! I work full time and live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford, nor have the time to keep fighting, or trying to prove my innocence, or paying false issued tickets. I have no problem whatsoever paying any ticket that is my fault, or even questionable. I've lived in my house before permit parking was even required in my neighborhood and abide by all parking laws in Denver and have no unpaid tickets because I don't have time for the aggravating hassle that comes with fighting the ticket, or not paying it. When I spoke with the parking authority supervisor dispatch on the phone, she was very nice and we had a polite and what I thought was a productive conversation about the growing issue of false permit parking tickets being issued. SHE ADMITTED it's been a problem in my neighborhood and many others have complained of the same issue. She said she would give all the officers that work in my neighborhood "a coaching" but nothing has changed. My only options, due to my house not having a driveway, (built in the 1800's) are to not park on the street in my neighborhood at all, or move out of the neighborhood all together, because nothing is changing and no one from the city government cares, or is resolving the issue in any way. My roommates and neighbors have received false tickets for the same issue. Do the parking officers get commission, or have a quota with how many tickets they have to hand out?? I wonder what the underlying reason is for them to recently start handing them out so carelessly. They even wrote all over my tires (which they have never done before) and marked my tire with chalk like they do in a "timed" parking zone, so that they can figure out if I have moved, or not! Our neighborhood permit parking is "not" time restrictive!!! It's like the wild west with the parking authority in my peaceful neighborhood, they don't seem to care about doing their job correctly and that gives us all a helpless feeling. Today I received a parking ticket from Officer Rael, C while offloading my ride share passenger. Apparently they don't teach these people the legal definition of parking. Parking typically is defined as "the stopping or standing of a vehicle whether occupied or not". It is the standing of a vehicle otherwise than temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading merchandise or passengers. I made a parking mistake, got a parking ticket, and paid it on time. Thought that was the end of it. 30 days later, I get a Past Due notice. I called Denver PVB. They looked up my citation number and said I was clear. "Sometimes these notices just go out automatically, but you're fine." 15 more days, another Past Due notice, another phone call, another reassurance that I was clear. I probed a little this time, because I can sort of understand one mistaken past due notice, but definitely not two. She assured me that I was fine and that there was no reason for me to worry. 20 more days and I receive a notice from a COLLECTIONS AGENCY threatening to report me to credit bureaus! Now I'm really angry. I call again and speak to Danielle, who actually told me that there was no way I was holding a letter from collections. Like I would lie about this? I scanned the impossible letter and emailed it to the PVB, thinking that this might help. 2 days later I receive an email that says, "oh, I found it. Your citation number had a "D" on the end, so you paid someone else's ticket. By the way, you still owe the penalty because your fee was due on 4.5.13 and you paid it on 4.9.13." First of all, I sent in a check on 4.4.13 and you took 5 days to process it - I didn't pay online! Second of all, there was no "D" at the end of my citation, or else I wouldn't be receiving notices with a "D"-less citation number that are connected to my car and identity. Third of all, I am NOT going to pay a penalty due to your office's incompetence! Forth of all, and this is the best part, when I enter my citation number with a "D" into the online payment system, it tells me that the number is too long. So I can't even pay this unjust ticket with a made up citation number?!?! If you call these people, you will speak to someone who is unhelpful, discourteous, and devoid of compassion or reason. Do not try to use logic or facts. All that they are concerned about is what their janky database tells them. I will update my review if this is EVER resolved. read more

What a scam Denver Parking has going on! I received a $75 ticket today for having concealed plates under my custom car cover ("a tarp"), despite plates properly affixed and up to date, parked in front of my house. Apparently Officer Younger, badge #179, found it too taxing to get off their donut-filled posterior and lift up the rear cover to examine my plates, but appeared to have just enough energy to leave my cover up and a ticket stuck under the rear wiper. I cannot find any mention of this being illegal in the Denver ordinances listed (license plate violation 54-62) but I suppose it will be a huge waste of my time to contest this in court. Looks to me like one way to balance the city budget is to really take us criminals to task and pay our debt to society... read more

Boss insisted we all go out for "good coffee" for my birthday. So, we went. Less than a week ago, I paid an ungodly sum of money to maintain my status as a law-abiding citizen and register my car in the Land of John Denver. Fast-forward to street parking in Cherry Creek - again, on my day of cakes and stuff - I parked, I paid, I ran back 10 minutes before the meter was due to expire to add more and, lo-and-behold, I have a nice yellow envelope on my windshield. They left me a birthday gift! Not. A ticket. A ticket for $75 with just 20 days to pay it (did our postal service get quicker, or is this a joke on top of a joke?) Dear Meter Maid, Please look at my car. Not ONE bracket, hole, nada to hold a front license plate; it was on my dash, pretty darn upright. It's about being respectful of people's time, and showing them the courtesy of explaining how things work upfront and clearly. As frustrating as it is to walk into a minimally secure (read: unnecessarily inconvenient and completely ineffective) facility, where rookie cops are assigned as punishment to operate an X-Ray machine from the 70s running a conveyor belt that can't NOT stall and have to greet already irate "customers," trust me...I'm understanding. But to have people drive down from wherever with the hopes that they can ask for a price reduction, knowing full well it ain't gonna happen, is cruel and stupid and inefficient. If you've been issued a violation for expired plates, don't bother coming down. They explicitly tell you they won't do anything - not a single dollar less. Why isn't this on their website? Because they still use Fred Flintstone to carve out their time cards. I mean, they handed me a dead bird with its butt dipped in paint to sign my cheque. Also, what's with government "attitude?" Being that I got and applied the new sticker over a month ago, I figure if I take a picture of the license plate with a time stamp on it and go in to fight it, I have it in the bag. Nope. Nobody likes getting a parking ticket, but a parking ticket from the City of Denver is always especially bad. It's one thing to be ticketed for something that you did wrong, and it's another to be persistently incorrectly ticketed by idiots. I still have NJ plates on my car because the car is registered in my dads name. Another important piece of background information: the state of NJ did away with registration stickers on license plates in 2001. Your car still must have valid registration of course (as mine does), but there is no license plate sticker to go along with it. My car has very old license plates, and thus, the last registration sticker appearing is a small "01" in the top right corner of the plate. Numerous times I have parked my car on the streets of Denver, come back within the posted time limit, and still found a ticket on my car. And it's always for the same thing: "Expired registration not valid plates". Are you kidding me? These tickets are always written at some obscene time in the morning (the last one I got was time stamped at 4:30 am) so I guess these idiots have nothing better to do than drive around and look at the teensy tiny date stickers on people's plates. Maybe they should spend their time reading up on out of state license plates instead, atleast it would be useful. It would be one thing if I had only gotten this ticket once, but it's happened multiple times. I have never and will never pay one of these tickets, I respond the same way each time: by providing evidence of my valid registration and a copy of NJ's clearly stated law about registration stickers. But it's still a pain in my ass and I hate them a little bit more each time. read more

All I can say, is that I have written checks made payable to "Denver Parking Nazis" and they always cashed them. Sounds like self-incrimination to me. When I think of the money that I have spent everywhere else, other than CCN or downtown/lodo, it should make businesses in those overly high-priced rent areas weep with sorrow that their own city screwed them over so badly. I have no problem with paying for the time that I park, but front license plates that are sitting on my dash are legal. There is no law that they have to be affixed to the bumper, only that they have to be clearly visible. If 5-0 wants to complain, I will listen to the popo. What I will not do, is pay a ticket to Denver on some bonehead meter maid's judgement call as to what is visible. And don't waste your time going into the parking violations bureau to argue. I have the unfortunate situation of being completely surrounded by metered streets and huge parking lots that charge exorbitant amounts for monthly parking. That and the fact that the apartment complex doesn't give any permits out makes me SOL. But what makes it worse is that these guys will ticket you like hawks. 9:00AM the meters start. I so did not know i could review the Parking bureau. Well i have a gripe. Thanks Laura L. I drove a Honda Civic hatchback at the time. It didnt have a place for a front license plate on the bumper. And i refuse to drill holes in my bumper for a Plate. So i kept it on the Drivers Side on the Dashboard plainly visible. I recieved a Ticket for No FRONT PLATE really? Well i refused and still refused to pay the ticket because i bought something else. And why do i stand my ground? If i spend a Half a Million Dollars on a Ferrari where is the spot on the bumper for a License Plate? There isnt one. Even my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix didnt have a spot for it, you had to remove the cover and buy a kit. Screw that. So whether i have a Ritzy Sports car or a Car anyone can afford if it doesnt have a spot for a Plate on the front i wont put one on. And even if it does it looks ugly and blocks air flow. Now i just park at a lot across from Greyhound. Screw you Parking Authority. Do you honestly know how many cars dont have a front plate? Cant ticket us all. Jerks read more

I also just received a warning from Officer Pillitteri. My friend parked his car on the street in front of my house in South Park Hill. He has been in San Diego for Thanksgiving for one week. The remarks on the warning said "Parked in the same location for weeks." I too am going to complain about this officer and try to find out which of my jerk neighbors lied about it. They are constantly threatening to sue me over a bush I removed from my front yard, concrete I had poured to stop my back patio from flooding, etc., etc. What is wrong with people? read more

These guys are ridiculous and should spend their time on making the city better instead of writing senseless tickets. I got a ticket for parking in a lane that converted to a bus lane (a change they conveniently made during the Covid shutdown). Mind you there were cones that cut off the lane before getting to the bus stop so a bus couldn't have driven down the lane anyway. They not only gave me a ticket, but towed my car and I would have had no way of knowing where they moved it. Completely obnoxious! Spend your time cleaning up the city and dealing with crime instead of trying to get more money from tax paying residents. read more

Yes, the enforcement is over the top. I got a ticket for an expired license plate renewal and I didn't even have an expired meter. I pretty much have given up on going downtown for dinner, movies etc. I can't stand having to watch my clock to make sure I don't run out of time on the meter. Yes, if people are abusing the system they should get a ticket, but when you are within 5 minutes and there is already a ticket the city of Denver can just stick it! read more
