I am a retired RN and thought I was familiar with the ins and outs of medical care for Seniors. After decades of being a patient of this practice and years of being seen by a Nurse Practitioner I really liked, I was "assigned" to Dr. Ko when the NP retired. My 1st annual visit with Dr. Ko was rushed from start to finish. I'm not sure it even lasted 5 minutes. Each concern I brought up was essentially dismissed as "sun damage". Since I have been treated for skin cancer in the past, this was concerning to me. After writing to the practice manager to complain and request to be switched to another practitioner, she phoned me and I was told "internal provider transfers were not allowed" at this time. I am stunned by this apparent policy! When I explained that I now need to be seen for a spot on my shoulder Dr. Ko "dismissed" but is worsening and I feel needs to be reevaluated, the practice manager informed me I had to be seen by Dr. Ko or not be seen at all. I told her that didn't work for me so now I'm searching for another dermatologist. My advice: stay away from this practice. read more

They have 20 dermatologists in this office. I was assigned to one who barely spent a couple of minutes with me, was dismissive and disinterested and then refused to give me any care at all for my severe acne because I had to reschedule a single appointment due to illness. With no other options in the city taking Medicare, my doctor referred me to this office again a year later for a concerning patch of discoloration that has appeared on my face and won't go away. I asked them to assign me to one of the other dermatologists. They said they'd check and call back. They never did, so months later, I called them again. They then REFUSED to let me see another doctor, saying I have to see the same doctor I saw previously, whether I was happy with her or not. They insist that's their policy and they won't make exceptions for patients who are uncomfortable with a doctor. Patients should have the right to see doctors WE are comfortable with, not those who make us feel worthless and give us unsatisfactory care. There is NO reason they couldn't allow me to see one of the other doctors except 'it's our policy'. If you have the option to go somewhere else, do. This office is unprofessional and cares nothing about patients. read more

Carol Bruneau, patient, visited your office 11/11/2024. I accompanied her as husband and driver. While waiting on the 3rd floor and also into the operating room I observed a disturbing issue. The operating room had debris on the floor, bodily fluids on the wall and baseboard and the sink was unclean. The dust was noticeable evidence also. While waiting in the waiting room I shared my observations with other drivers/patients. All were appalled. Unfortunately, there are only two dermatology offices in all of Portland, Maine and the other one isn't accepting new patients. So you have no choice but to go here, where you get doctors like Rachel Gormley who have no interest at all in the well-being of patients. The 'care' I received from Gormley consisted of her being dismissive, rude, brusque and devoid of any compassion whatsoever. She made me jump through a hundred hoops in hopes of receiving treatment for my severe skin issues, all of which I did, only to decide that I can't have treatment because I am disabled with a medical condition that caused me to reschedule one appointment, which she apparently felt inconvenienced her too much. I see a lot of negative reviews for this office, and I can certainly see why. When doctors enter the profession only for the lucrative salary and don't actually care about patients, you end up with an office like this. We desperately need a new option for dermatology care in Portland. read more

I was grossly misdiagnosed by Dr. Baker at Dermatology Associates. She made a snap judgement using little medical science or fact, and I left wondering about the diagnosis. It took me traveling to Seattle for Thanksgiving during which time my sister in law had an appointment with her dermatologist and asked about my symptoms. He was able to correctly diagnose me without even seeing me. When I called Dermatology Associates to try to contact Dr. Baker, they could not get me any mechanism to send her an email and told me to write her a letter by post. I am very happy with the care I have received. I had a spot on my cheek I felt embarassed to even mention, but they put me at ease and took me seriously and even did a biopsy. Luckily it turned out to be benign. I went back a year later for a full skin checkup and they took their time and I felt they did an unrushed, thorough job. When they were done they asked if I had any other questions, so I asked about a bump that had been bothering me. After saying it was nothing dangerous, they agreed to freeze it off since it bothered me. The room was perfectly clean at both visits. read more

I've been going to see Dr. Steen for over 10 years and have ALWAYS felt like I was treated in a thorough and very professional manner. I've been a patient at Dermatology Associates for years. Today, I called to make my annual appointment, and, after being on hold for more than 10 minutes, was hung up on. I called back, actually got through to a person, told them I wanted to make an appointment, and got hung up on again. I'm not sure what's happened to this place, but it sure seems like it's gone downhill. I have trouble imagining why they'd be so rude to a customer. read more

I was a patient here for 18 years. Had the same doctor for most of that time, then they abruptly switched me to a nurse practitioner and I was with her for two or three years and then they switched me back to the doctor I had before, no explanation given. Then the doctor retired and they switched me to a nurse practitioner again but not the same one I had been with previously. All three providers were always very rushed and spent more time looking at their laptop computers than looking at me. Frequently they would give me home-care instructions in the exam room, and when I got home I would have a follow-up question and the person on the phone would say "no, your doctor (or nurse) never said that, you are mistaken." There was always a lot of that -- one hand not knowing what the other hand was doing. And none of the providers ever knocked on the door before entering the exam room which is very unprofessional. Ultimately I stopped going here because my last visit with nurse practitioner #2 was a nightmare. The exam room was filthy. The sink had dried blood and other "material" in it. The exam gown they made me put on smelled like body odor. The nurse practitioner did a minor procedure on me that she said would not hurt and told me I did not need lidocaine, but it did hurt very badly and I was in a great deal of pain for the next 24 hours. The third day after the procedure, I was infested with lice. I had to have gotten them at Dermatology Associates because I hadn't been anywhere else during that time. Not surprising, considering how dirty the exam room was and that the exam gown probably hadn't been washed! I will never ever go back. read more

If I could give it a negative review I would. Both a routine tangential removal of a skin tag and a small pre cancerous lesion was totally botched by Corey DeWitt. I specifically asked if the lesion, which was on my face, would blister. He said no. I ended up with a blister on my face that was 4 times the size of the lesion he removed that lasted 3 weeks post appointment. 4 months after my appointment and the skin tag hasn't healed the way it should. I will now need to find a dermatologist who knows how to fix it. These are basic dermatological procedures that should not have been problematic. Beware before you book an appointment. read more

Look elsewhere for a medical practice that is responsive to its patients. The professional medical personnel and administrative staff are quite cordial but is challenging to talk with the medical professional by telephone for questions or concerns. My doctor's nurse called me to explain that I had two surgical options for my cancer treatment which she briefly outlined, but she was not authorized to discuss expected outcomes or recovery time of each. I've asked the administrative staff to ask my doctor to call me. No reply yet. Also, scheduling surgery is not possible until a staff member's vacation. I'm now searching for another dermatology practice. I have no reason to question the medical staff's competencies. read more

I would not recommend going to this office if you want to be treated like a real person, or a patient who deserves to be seen. Kristin Mathieson was immensely dismissive when I brought up the issues I had come in to be seen for, continuously talked over me and interrupted me, has some of the worst bedside manners I have ever experienced in this field and twice said 'well I've been doing this for 30 years' instead of actually just answering the questions I had asked. I would highly, highly not recommend end this place to anyone. It was humiliating to be looked down on for seeking medical help, and DA should considering updating their doctors to people who actually want to see and help their patients. The ladies who checked you into your appointment are more help than any of the doctors there, and at the end of the appointment you just get sent out - no words on if youre supposed to heck out, pay a bill or anything. Scheduling is impossible. Nobody seems to be communicating with each other and it feels like they are significantly understaffed. The providers are great. The staff are nice and generally helpful. The problem appears to be a management one, but it really impacts the patient experience and makes it a pain to have a straightforward relationship with your dermatologist. read more

Had surgery on my nose and cheek on Nov.8th. After two sessions they got all of the cancer. Dr. McCrory did the repair surgery and did a beautiful job on the area. She made an appt. for Jan. if I wasn't satisfied with the results. Totally happy with the results of her surgery and didn't need a followup. read more

I've been a patient in this practice for over 10 years, now on my third Doc there. Very knowledgeable and the care is great. The staff are caring and professional. Another comment mentions wait times. They vary widely. After my first doctor retired I was assigned to another who made me wait 35 - 45 minutes past my appointment on our first two appointments. I walked out without being seen the second time, and called the office manager the next morning. Got reassigned to Dr. Steen, who is smart, efficient, timely, and caring. Doctor's who regularly make you wait aren't being respectful and need to be told so (or fired). read more
