The Dr's were good, the PA we saw -average, front desk staff - amazing, the financial assistance team member - not great. During the many visits to this place we saw 2 Doctors, 1 PA, and had interaction with someone who was supposed to help with medication financial assistance with the manufacturer. The front desk schedulers are always amazing and helpful. Billing methods are all over the place and inconsistent (e-mail, text, check in for appointment and find you have a balance due you never knew about). The PA she saw at the beginning almost kept her in misery because she couldn't tell when she needed to escalate treatment . Her attempts were not working and she pushed to a 6 month appointment/review while my Mom suffered and kept saying over repeated visits, "this isn't working". We pushed for an appointment with an actual Doctor which yielded the results we needed. One Dr did get my Mom where she needed to be and my Mom is a lot better now, and yet another Dr there recommended meds the first one didn't that made a big difference in pain management. When we needed financial assistance from the manufacturer, I presented the paperwork I got online, mostly filled out, that needed the Dr signature, and was assured their person would take the paperwork - handle it - and was amazing. During that time they did give her sample shots to tide us over. I had already bought one month of prescription and was crossing my fingers for the financial help. After 30 days, not hearing anything from Dermatology Associates, and a $1485.00 balance coming due again (for one month perscription only), I called them to see what was going on. When I got a call back I was told that "I" should have been calling the manufacturer... My response -- No one told me that. Them - Oh well, someone should have. You need to call them and get the application approved, they will want information from you on things like your Moms income. Me - OK, I don't have the application, I gave you everything. Them - Oh someone should have given you a copy. Me- No one gave me a copy! (like geezus people, really!) It was then I found out it took so long because the wrong Dr signed the paperwork the first time. They had to get a signature from another Doctor and re-submit the paperwork. Since my Mom had seen two Doctors for the same prescription, I had put the first Doctor on the paperwork and apparently they needed the second. However, I would have thought they would have checked that. So I asked if they could please e-mail me the application paperwork so I could talk with the manfucturers rep. Them - yes. I later received the email and after over a month of not hearing from the Derm. Assoc., their team member called 3 days later from our call about the application to see if I had done it yet and that I needed to give the manufacturer information and I should have talked to someone. I found this interesting since communication from them was so bad yet they are now on me like - did I do it yet?! I called back to say No I haven't talked to anyone and I didn't know what information they were talking about as I hadn't talked to anyone. They found my call to be very rude and were very upset with me and we ended up having a negative interaction. When I called the manufacturer later that week about the financial assistance application they informed me they couldn't do anything with the application as they did NOT have the perscriptionauthorization from Derm Assoc yet. All that drama and Dermatology Associates didn't even do it right (AGAIN). I asked the manufacturer rep if they could follow up to see if they could get it, they said they would. When I checked back a couple weeks later, still no authorization from Dermatology Associates. At that point it just seemed to me that doing the right thing is not what these people do - or this individual anyway. They can't say Sorry for bad communication and poor execution of their function to get paperwork right and can't appreciate WHY I might be upset and aggravated. I gave up and reached out to Medicare to get on a payment plan. My Mom can't afford this medication and I pay for more than half of her bills, so what is another overpriced medication coming out of my already stretched budget. Thankfully, lots of other dermatology practices out here. We will just move along. Update: My Mom received a termination letter today saying they won't see her as a patient anymore. They stated that in order to share her records with a new medical provider (Federal Health Information Privacy Laws) she needs to sign the enclosed medical documents release authorization form. I've been a patient for over 20 years. I called today to make an appointment and my experience with the receptionist was not what I had expected or experienced in the past. He tried to assure me that a PA was the same as a MD. I said that I would rather see the MD I'd seen in the past, and he told me she was booked until September. When I said I would try elsewhere, he hung up without a word. I'm sad to go, but they are obviously busy enough already. Having professional front desk staff is important. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Eric Hester at Dermatology Associates for several years; after spending many years toasting my body in the sun, I get regular annual whole body checks for skin cancer. Dr. Hester is thorough and efficient in his review of my skin and I love that he has his kids' artwork on the treatment room walls. He is charming and personable and that's important for me when someone is going to be doing a whole body skin check. I don't want a cranky doctor checking my skin :D However, trying to get an appointment for something that comes up in between the annual visits is difficult. I've had a couple of times where getting an appointment has been challenging, but other than scheduling, I'd recommend Dermatology Associates to anyone needing care for their skin, just don't expect to get in quickly (my recent experience getting an appointment with Dr. Hester was about 7-9 months out). When they get this scheduling thing taken care of, I'll change my review to 5-stars. read more

Whoever answers the phone when you call this place was so weirdly rude from the minute he answered the phone. Midway through the call with him (where I was simply asking what the soonest available appointment would be at that clinic) I actually had to laugh because he was acting so inconvenienced by the fact that I was asking that and his tone was so rude, I just wanted to know when I could get in to see someone. This group is a money hungry company that pissed the wrong person. My family went to this group and received a bill. My wife went and saw one of their Dermatologists on 7/8. We were sent a bill in August...paid the bill in September 30th. We got sent to a damn collection company with a "zero" balance on October 15th. You got to be kidding. Started seeing Jo Martin as my dermatologist last year. It was virtually impossible to get in to see her but the first visit went OK. Second (annual) visit started with numerous texts and emails reminding me of my appointment. I actually received a text at 6:30 in the morning on the day of my appointment (after I had already acknowledged that I was attending the appointment). The signage for buildings on Kruse Way Place is terrible. I called for directions and was given incorrect information to locate the building. Upon arrival, I waited 10 minutes for the customer ahead of me to pay her bill, while three front desk staff looked on. Then I was given a childish electronic device to update my information. But before completing the electronic forms, the front desk staff asked for my insurance cards, making it impossible to complete the electronic forms. When the forms became repetative (asking for my or my wife's name numerous times), I gave up and turned the device in. Five minutes later (the three staff members were talking among themselves), the front desk staff asked me to continue filling out the forms. When I told her it was awkward and kept repeating requests for the same information, she said that It must be updated for me to see my provider. When I voiced frusteration, she told me that if I didn't update the paperwork (that includes Marketing questions), I would not be able to see the doctor. Both Providence and Dermatology Associates should be ashamed of their customer service. I am 65 years old and can't see out of my right eye, due to a cateract that is being surgically corrected next month. I just can't handle the indifferent service I get, where they now leave customers responsible for updating their electronic files, while they simply watched. Never going back. read more

I scheduled my review appointment. The Friday before the Monday appointment my scheduled changed so I sent an email note and called to cancel the Monday appointment. Later that week I received a bill for $50 for missing the appointment. I called billing for an explanation, and they said someone would reach out about why I was billed $50 for missing the appointment. 3 weeks past, I called each week asking for an explanation and never received a call back. I was about to write up a review of my visit to Dermatology Associates in Tigard, and was surprised to find their star rating was so low. I went in for skin cancer screening. I'd done their on-line check-in, so my in-person check-in was about a minute. Staff were friendly and efficient. Waiting time for my appointment was barely enough to check messages on my phone. The treatment room was clean and the doctor's framed diplomas hung on the wall for easy inspection, including a well-regarded local university. Dr. V came in, all cheerful. She checked the excision she'd done last year and asked me if there'd been any problems, and there hadn't been. We joked that she should sign her work. She did the upper body screening and touched up some recent things that had been annoying me and sent me to make an appointment for next year. Front desk staff got me set up, again very friendly and efficient. All in all, things couldn't have gone better. So I looked at the less-than-glowing reviews. Some were back to 2018. The only ones that seemed still relevant were reports of long waits to get an appointment. But it's the same with my GP and my dentist. I think a lot of practitioners decided, at the start of the pandemic, to retire. Kudos to those who stuck with it -- and us -- through the hard times. I started going here after I couldn't make an appointment with my previous dermatologist for about 9 months. I was able to make a much quicker appointment here with one of the PA's. I saw him a couple of times, but really didn't feel like I was valued as a patient. When I needed services again, I requested another provider and was switched to Dr. Hester with no problem. The screening was thorough and didn't seemed rushed like before. On my last visit, I came at the appointment time and was back in the exam room within minutes of my arrival. I wish it was that way everywhere. I wish the office was closer to home, but I will keep coming to see Dr. Hester for my dermatological needs. read more

I love the doctors here, but the receptionist I spoke with on the phone was extremely rude! She asked for my information and cut me off multiple times. I just tried to schedule as a first-time patient. Veteran/ disabled. I was hung up on by Michelle, and Amber told me to have a good day. I tried explaining to her that I was seen at the Portland Dermatologist Clinic, and before I could get anything out, I was told I'm confusing her and she doesn't want to talk about another office. I tried again to tell her I was just giving you a backstory to why I'm calling and trying to schedule my appointment. She said, What's wrong? Your tone changed, and through Michelle hanging up in my face as a reason, I got hung up on. My tone did change as you, Amber, were cutting me off and being very unprofessional. I want someone above Amber and Michelle's heads to call me. This is very serious and makes me feel like no one at this office has any integrity whatsoever or professional ethics. I disconnected the call on Amber/Amanda; one of those is her name. I asked for a manager, and she said, "It's either me or Michelle, the one who hung up on you, so choose which one." I hope this office knows I'm contacting the BBB and ADA. This office accepts state insurance, and the moment she found out about my insurance, she started talking to me very condescendingly. read more

These folks seemed wonderful the first time I went but I got an infection from two of my three procedures. The first time I didn't think much of it but after several returns for infection care one nurse said 'this happens a lot here - you may want to try a different office'. I brought a friend for the third procedure and she watched the tech put on gloves then touch many things before cleaning my wound, including doorknobs, tools, pens, and her own face! read more

Dr. Lin was FANTASTIC with my very nervous neuro divergent son. My kid (17) struggles in new situations and pretty much is unable to process what's being said and done. As a former patient of Dr. Vanderbeek (and before that, Dr. Ross), I called when I noticed a lesion developing at the base of my neck over my clavicle area. I described the size and characteristics of the lesion and that I was concerned it was pathological and wanted an appointment. I was told (in the first week of April) that I couldn't get an appointment until AUGUST! Even though I am a patient of record, I am considered a "new patient" because it has been several years since my last visit (ummm... hello... COVID??!!) Also, they do not have a cancellation list for urgent appointments. I found an appointment at another reputable clinic, was seen immediately and biopsy confirmed dx of squamous ca. I'm glad Dermatology Associates are busy, but I'm shocked they don't have any urgent appointment flexibility for patients of record. read more

UPDATE: These test from OHSU have now cost me $970 dollars out of pocket. A test I didn't need(and wasn't told I could waive), and told it would give cause when it did not. We didn't need the test to tell me it wasn't cancer, since it was from a trauma to the spot. "Sorry for the length, but this covers from making the appointment to final billing." I am disappointed in this company. I will not be back. The only good part was how simple it was for him to remove the growth. I had a cut on my leg that was healing funny and wanted to get it checked out. It had been 6 months, and it formed a large bump on my skin and wouldn't heal up. I knew it wasn't cancer, just an issue with something in the wound or maybe it just healed weird. The appointment was made, the soonest I could get in was three weeks, I waited 6 months, what is three weeks? I arrive, the front desk people were okay, not overly friendly, not rude. I go back to a room, its quick, the guy cuts it off and says they will send it to biopsy. I didn't know that not having it biopsied was an option, but he told me they would be able to tell me if it was a bug bite, a foreign body or something else that caused it. He did not inform me that they may send it to an outside lab for biopsy, but even if they need to, no big deal right? He says it will be 3-5 days for results, with the holiday weekend, it may be a bit longer. I wait three weeks, no phone calls. So I call them. They call me that afternoon and tell me its not cancer(yeah, we all pretty much knew that already), I ask about what caused it, and she said that she didn't know, and was unable to tell me why(so I am no closer to finding out why it happened. This was the only reason I wanted the biopsy...oh well I go on about my life). I receive a bill from them, insurance covered this, you owe this blah blah. Okay that's fine, I call right away, I pay it. I receive a bill from OHSU a few weeks later, saying that I owe them money. I call OHSU and they tell me it is from the dermatologists. I call the dermatologist to confirm, she tells me that they sometimes send out samples to outside labs. I ask "Why am I paying the lab directly when you sent them the sample? Your bill should be all inclusive of all services performed, and I should not have to spend my time trying to validate bills that are being sent to me. I did not do business with OHSU, I did business with Dermatology Associates, and all services should be billed through you." She was unable to provide an answer, but I equate it to buying a Nike shirt. I do not pay Nike for their service, and then the store for theirs, I pay the store directly, and they handle any bills between suppliers and service providers. I was also not informed it would be sent out, but she said there are signs in the rooms. There may be signs, but I am not reading them when I am having a part of me cut off. I should receive ONE bill, that includes all services they provided and used. I payed OHSU directly, but this billing issue was my final straw. It prompted me to write this review that I otherwise wouldn't have, and not let the lackluster attitudes and poor follow up go by the wayside. read more

I was in to see them once before and the doctor saw me for two minutes told me everything was fine. I was relieved but felt the visit was very curt. I was in to see my PCP at the beginning of the July and they sent a referral over for another thing. So I waited and never got a call for scheduling. I called them to see what was going on the lady on the phone was so rude and short with me. They did not have availability to see me which I understand but had they called in a timely manner I wouldn't have had any problems with them. This was the worst experience I've had in any medical office. The reception staff was pleasant and tried to accommodate me, however that's where the good experience ended. My first appointment with Dr. Vanderbeek was on a Friday at 3:45. I called the office at 2:30 saying i received the reminder and would be on my way. They advised what to bring, etc. So far, great. Get to appointment. The doctor is running 45-60 minutes behind. Do I want to wait or reschedule. I reschedule for the following Friday at the same time with the same doctor. I arrived early to fill out the required paper work, and waited. I expected some wait as i was early, and filled out the paper work quickly. 3:45 came and went. At 4:05, I asked why so late again. The receptionist apologized profusely and said it would be another 15-20 minutes. She asked if I wanted to wait. I asked for my money back and left. So again, the doctor is 40+ minutes behind. Why wasn't I informed earlier? Prior to me, the patients were flying in and and out. At least 8 people came and went from 3:30 to 4:00. I understand when people are at the doctor they want the full attention of the doctor, but if this facility is unable to keep up with demand, either book less appointments or bring on more staff.. Maybe the issue is Dr. Vanderbeek herself. Perhaps the other doctors posses basic time management or communication skills. Regardless, I've called my doctor and asked for a referral elsewhere. I'm sure another doctor would like to bill my insurance company for a simple visit. The 1 star is for the pleasant reception staff. read more

I never had a problem with acne until last summer. I did everything natural to combat it but that wasn't helping. After months of research, I came in knowing what I needed for my acne but was suggested a topical ointment just to take care of the scars and nothing for acne, which is why I came in. A few problems I have is getting my prescription to the pharmacy. I called multiple times and the prescription was never sent it. So I just didn't take it. Dr. Suggested the pharmacy call instead of me. My main problem with them is the front desk staff. Every time I come in, they give me smug looks and are very rude. ESPECIALLY when I call in! I'm given SO MUCH attitude. Having worked for a large medical center, I know what information is needed for the front desk staff to get my message over to the medical assistants and nurses. I swear they don't even pay attention to what I'm saying. In the middle of my message to the MA/nurse (which is never long) I get cut off and an told they'd give me a call and ask for my number again. This facility came highly recommended by a friend who has been a patient here for many years. The reception staff was friendly and professional. I was able to fill out my paperwork and due to a cancellation I was able to get in to be seen before my appointment time. I am very fair skinned and skin cancer runs in my family so I was a little anxious about my appointment. The assistant picked up on my nervousness and helped put me at ease. I saw Holly Rasmussen and she gave me a thorough exam, calmed my nerves and ultimately removed 2 moles (both were benign.) Initially one of the results came back inconclusive and required additional study/ testing. I was glad that they went to such lengths to ensure my health and calm my fears. read more

Idk, Dr. Hester seemed like a nice guy, when he questioned a mole on my chest, I wondered if I should check with insurance first, but he thought it was something that should be biopsied quickly, so I did and supposedely it turned out to be nothing, I can't understand all the medical terminology on the report, no one cared to go over that with me, now even with insurance I owe almost $200 and a waste of time and pain for nothing i guess. I felt a bit pressured to get this done right away, perhaps I should have just monitored it more. Dr Hester is fantastic. My teenage son has had issues with acne and a mole needing removal and Dr Hester has helped him tremendously. His bedside manner and kindness is really top notch. Abysmal is where I can start but it ends there as well. I am not even sure what the hours are, 7:30 or 8:30, either way they are never taking their calls at either times (answering machine). The reason for 2 stars is that it is a 'nice' location. However the lobby is deathly quiet to the point where you can hear the hum of the lights. (It's ominous). Scott the PA, is amicable however.... he may be better suited for animal disposal. The assistants are adequate however held to their positions are left inept. I called in TWICE over the period of one year (2022) to ask for an estimation of their consultation/office visit price for a very specific ailment vs. potential removal price, and the receptionist gave me those ranged price estimates. I called about this information in the first place to compare with other dermatologists in the area, and these prices are what made me decide to make an appointment at Dermatology Associates. I made an appointment with Dermatology Associates two months in advance, specifying exactly what I was coming in for and informing them that I would be paying without medical insurance. I was, for the second time, quoted a range of prices for the office visit and potential removals. I used my hard-earned time off from my job to get to my appointment on time, which I did. I asked the receptionist to confirm my total for a simple office visit and his price range was up $100 over what I was quoted on the phone just months before. He tried to tell me that nobody on staff should have quoted ANY prices in the first place, so the doctor just looking at something on my skin and doing nothing more might cost me $300 or more for a simple office consultation. I made it clear I was there for a removal at a potentially later date based on the prices I was quoted and was basically told that there was no limit to what they could charge me. The receptionist then (for the third time, without any apology) asked if I would like to cancel my appointment. I asked him how Dermatology Associates price-tiered appointments based on simple look-only exams and he refused to tell me. I informed him I would not consent to pay for something for which I had zero foreknowledge, despite the prior information I was given, and Dermatology Associates was happy to show me the door in response because they had no idea how to answer my perfectly reasonable, valid questions. This business clearly does not communicate with its other, very small, departments and clearly does not care at all about helping first-time patients. First visit is definitely the last. Guess I'll learn to live with my new skin buddy. read more
