I have been spending a lot of time here since I discovered that I have spinal stenosis. My journey started a year ago when I started having sciatic pain in my legs. I didn't know what it was at the time or how to deal with the pain. My primary doctor recommended I see a spine specialist and begin physical therapy. I had heard about DISC on our local sports radio and from a friend that had been here before. Desert Institute for Spine Care is the leader in minimally invasive spinal surgeries. Everyone has been nice so far and informative about my situation and what to expect. My journey is still at the beginning for me. I am starting out with the least invasive options for myself like physical therapy and spinal injections to help manage my pain. I recently became a patient here and have absolutely nothing but GOOD things to say about this practice and my doctor, Dr. Mark Wang. Both him and the PAs that I have seen have been incredibly kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough with my care. They have taken the time to answer my questions and respond promptly and in a timely manner when I have called and left voicemails for their front office staff and medical assistants. Dr. Wang did a Microdistectomy for me as well and was an incredible surgeon. The care here is top of the line and all of the surgeons in the practice come highly recommended. read more

I felt Dr. Wang is a very caring individual. He is very knowledgeable with regard to the surgery he is performing. I felt he always explained everything in great detail, taking the time necessary. I felt the whole office to surgery experience was a well oiled machine. Spinal fusion should be a last resort for most people. I had very little pain after the procedure. Dr. Joshua Abrams performed a fairly complex surgery on my lumbar spine. He is kind, friendly and understanding.

It's been 2.5 year since my spine surgery with Dr. Yeung. I'm doing very well and this is my story. After reviewing the MRI he told me i had arthritis, 2 bulging discs (C6-C7) and a bone spur in my spine. Before the surgery i was taking a lot of Gabapentin to control the pain. This is the review i wrote a few weeks after my surgery. Words cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. Yeung and his team. What can I say about someone who saved my life? I have always been an active person, but in November, 2022 I was sidelined with excruciating pain in my right shoulder and neck. The pain ran all the way down to my fingertips. I consulted with a number of doctors and based on the MRI it was determined that I had a bone spur in my spine. Other doctors wanted to do surgery and install a "cage." After researching this method, I discovered that this often fails after 8-10 years. I continued to look for a better option and found Dr. Christopher Yeung. He performed a surgical procedure that included removing two discs and replacing them with synthetic ones. No cage was needed. Now it has been 3 weeks since the surgery and I'm completely pain free. I'm gradually getting stronger and I'm very pleased with the result. While in their office I noticed many photos of professional athletes that have had surgery there. This is a testament to Dr. Yeung and his colleagues and how well respected they are. I would recommend Dr. Yeung to anyone considering surgery on their spine. What could improve ,hmm maybe retirement of this establishment having other patients reach out to me for help or ask about how I'm doing after my UCSF repair to my back bc they are scared , hopeful all of the above after the pain they were left in by you and facing surgery or the other one who evaded your suggestion similar surgery a Tlif (I can't make this stuff up) at my Physical therapists office no names disclosed but that they heard I was a patient of yours bc they (not lying can't make this stuff up) but are in pain after a couple procedures or are still if not in worse pain. I mean my PT's I've been too and pain management places they all talk amongst the patients and therapists it's appalling and quite discussing and very triggering at times that my Dr's , physical therapists they all talk. I tell my story to help others and hope people will listen and hope I can save just one person from falling victim to the pain you leave people in with no hope. It's sad that I run into patients all the time who are victims of similar surgeries hmm or the lucky to evade the similar surgical recommendations at Physical therapist appointments or business meetings, the community talks to each other nowadays in all aspects of our life and stories start getting shared you find out that you share similar Dr's after crying about back pain , Dr's sharing with other Dr's or referring you to your superiors who sit above you and can describe your "Personality" (I swear I can't make this stuff up) but tell me that the fusion you did is the cause of my "failed back". You literally said to trust you "in annoyed voice- I already told you that what I've recommend the "Tlif" is best and if I was your sister with your issues you would suggest a Tlif too!" Hopefully your sister is reading this bc the second opinion completely described my current and "repaired" backs condition (again can't make this up) and how "it was going to act like a slinky as a description of your severe spinal issues all through our your lumbar and if you don't stabilize the whole slinky and you fuse the middle section of the slinky being the severity the above and below it will speed up the process of slipping out bending ,breaking etc"! I know you will remember that conversation with an annoyed look and body language that a Dr shared with me as a personality trait ;⁠-⁠) actually two Dr's!. So sad, the office staff abuses patients they think for some reason they don't want by playing dumb,, faking call transfers, ", not getting" repeated image uploads, allegedly. Dr Justin Field gave me such an obviously phony "plan of approach to get rid of me, even though I'm an ideal patient by every measure, according to several other surgeons, allegedly. Record everything if you don't run. .... Wow, now Dr Chris Yeung who's father built this places reputation on arthroscopic spine surgery instead of fusions and ADR, leaves me the same general number I got the run around for 6 months on...Dr Field couldn't even allegedly admit my pain problem even ​many laymen like me could clearly see.... He also said bone spurs aren't contra indicated for ADR which more prominent specialists say is false on surgeon lectures on YouTube. Had surgery June 1 with Dr. Wang. Been in pain ever since. I can't bend over for anything, putting on my dogs' collars, picking up things off the floor, household chores. Follow up appointment was with the P.A. who told me, "You are just going to have to live with the pain possible from here on in". So, why did you even operate on me? That is your best effort???? Can't try to determine the cause??? I cannot get a live person on the phone or a return call. The only response I get is a text telling me that another dose of Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) was prescribed. I don't want medications, I want the physical condition causing my pain to be fixed and they won't even try to determine what is going on. I am going to make an appointment with a pain doc which will probably take a month to get into. Legal recourse???? read more

This review is long past due, what a difference Dr. Salari made in my life, I walked into his office bent over a walker. I was in surgery the following week. I was having issues with the pain killers, Dr. Salari worked with me until we found a medication that worked. In less than a month I felt like myself again. I can't thank Dr. Salari and his staff enough. I would recommend Dr. Salari highly. He referred me to physical therapy which I still use whenever I feel any discomfort and it still works great. I had a laminectomy performed by Dr Nima Solari. I went from having severe pain to being 100 percent pain free. I was back at the gym within 1 week. Dr. Solari is absolutely fantastic!! His level of expertise, exceptional bedside manner and overall knowledge is as good as it gets. When I was admitted into the hospital I asked the head nurse who is the best spinal surgeon. She said without a doubt it is Dr Solari. I asked her if she says that about all of the surgeons, she said no. Dr. Solari is the best. I had seen numerous top orthopedic surgeons at top ranked universities and centers (in several cities). Luckily for me, those facilities failed to staff the centers with high level professionals, like Desert Institute for Spine Care (and The CORE Medical Facility). Get a second, third, fourth opinion. I injured my back moving some stuff in my office 2.5 years ago. Saw my PCP and he recommended this facility. I went there, discussed what pain I was having, specifically a bad burning sciatica pain down the back of my leg. I got an MRI and X-rays which revealed a herniated disc at L3/L4. When I went back I saw Dr Fields and he told me that I would need a microdiscectomy to correct the issue. I had gone through the PT, chiropractors tor, acupuncture, message, shots, everything before seeing an orthopedic, I was desperate. I got the surgery. A month post op I knew something was wrong. I contacted the office, told me it was normal. A couple weeks later, same thing. Spoke to a PA and they prescribed gabapentin, still nothing. I had the burning sensation still on the back of my leg. I went in 2x to the office and saw only PAs, then saw the doctor for 5 min. He said I would need a fusion if I still had pain. The office is very quick to get you in and out. I sought out second opinions, another orthopedic surgeon and a neurologist. Both of them said if I had pain on the back of my leg, it would be L5/S1, NOT where I had my surgery. The neurologist read my file, X-rays and MRI and said I have Bertolotti's Syndrome, a condition where the transverse process of L5 comes close to the illeac crest of the sacrum, and that it's possible nerves and muscles caught in there could be the cause of my sciatic pain. A year post op and I feel like I got surgery for nothing, because it was not the spot of my pain. Now I have back pain where my surgery was and the same sciatic pain I went to the office in the first place with. It was never explained to me the different nerve path of the different levels of the spine. It seems that they saw an issue on an MRI and said "yup this is the problem surgery will fix it". Get a second opinion, find a place not so quick to open you up just to collect insurance. Now a year later I am in the same position with a part of my disc missing, back pain I didn't have before and a level of my spine with degenerative disc disease. read more

Dr. Nima Salari is GOLD. He truly works wonders. Dr. Salari performed a spine surgery on my husband 2 weeks ago. We came from California for a second opinion after seeing 4 doctors in Southern California. We did our research and found DISC watching one of the Seattle Scientific Foundations webinars. After first visit we felt confident we were with the right doctor. After surgery it was a miracle, my husband did not take any pain killers and did not feel an incision at all. Like no surgery was done. He was able to walk pain free since the first day post-op. Dr. Salari is gifted, top notch surgeon and at the same time a caring and kind person. Dr. Salari and team at DISC (including Gabbie, PA) exceeded our expectations. Dr. Salari went far beyond while performing a surgery on my husband and fixed more issues than anticipated. Dr. Salari recommends procedure only if it's needed. We know doctors who want to do a procedure because they make money. Dr. Yeung, please open a branch in Southern California, it's hard to find doctors who really perform endoscopic spine surgeries, they just advertise it on their websites but in reality they still perform surgeries as they were doing 40 years ago. Hands down, the WORST follow up I have ever experienced from a Doctor. Spent money on CT, X-rays, and the most expensive office visit I have ever paid for, only to have Dr Salari AND HIS STAFF completely ghost me. 3 messages (no, you can't ever actually talk to anyone, because the system makes you go to voice mail) to the office for a call back, only to NEVER get one call back. He reviewed my medical records (Unlike You). He knew of the issues I was experiencing going into my appointment. He explained what's going on with my spine and back and put forth a course of action. You didn't listen to a word I Said. You briefly looked at my Spine MRI from a Distance and gave me the bums rush. You are one of the WORST Doctors I've ever seen. You didn't listen to me at all. You didn't go over my history of back and spine issues. You kept putting words in my mouth when trying to explain my pain areas. You should get it off your tech toys and start putting some effort in your practice. I don't know how you stay in business. If anyone asks me I will gladly share with them my experience with you. Went in to see these people about my neck pain. They recommended a cervical fusion. I asked how much it would cost. Although the Dr said he had done "hundreds" of these procedures, but he did not know what my out of pocket costs could be, but it couldn't be "more than a couple of hundred dollars". (I'm on Medicare). He promised someone from his office would call with the cost. Several days later, since I had not heard anything, I called the office and asked again what my out of pocket costs would be. Again, "Sorry, we don't know, we'll get back to you", was the answer. After waiting another week, I began researching for myself. I came across the CMS website, which is affiliated directly with Medicare. They have a chart showing the out of pocket costs for patients in all 50 states (the costs vary quite a bit between states). Anyway, I found the average out of pocket costs for someone on Medicare in Arizona is $45000 for a cervical fusion with no complications. Can you spell C-R-O-0-K-S and L-I-A-R-S??? read more

I had a very different outcome at DISC than some of the other reviewers. I woke up one morning almost two years ago with what I thought was a pinched nerve in my lower back, with pain all the way down my leg. I'd already had shingles so I knew it wasn't that. The pain was excruciating and after taking tons of ibuprofen, using heating pads, and sleeping in a recliner for a couple of weeks with no relief, I decided I needed help. I went on the internet (yes) and searched for doctors in my area of Phoenix who specialized in back pain. I found Dr. Nima Salari at the Desert Institute for Spine Care and was impressed with the positive reviews. He saw me right away, and the reviews don't even begin to do him justice. He is kind, patient, and understanding. The diagnosis and treatment plan used some big words - spondylolysis with spondyloisthesis remedied by transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. What?!!! (A fracture likely sustained years ago during athletic endeavors which would benefit from fusion surgery.) Dr. Salari explained the problem thoroughly and offered a couple of solutions in case I was hesitant about an operation. He never advocated for surgery over less invasive solutions, which I appreciated. I immediately opted for the surgery, and it was performed by him in January, 2022. Prior to that, he was able to give me some relief with medications. The operation was flawless and I was up and walking around immediately with minimal discomfort (well, maybe I took a little nap first). Now, in August 2023, I forget I even had this issue as I have my mobility back and am enjoying a pain free life. I highly recommend Dr. Salari to anyone who is experiencing back pain. Even if you don't want or need surgery, he is there to help you figure out what is causing your issue. Just to have him explain things in a simple and meaningful way is worth the time and may even offer you a path to recovery. read more

I have osteoarthritis in my lumbar spine that would cause crippling sciatica pain. The lumbar joints bone on bone in 2 places and curvature in that area. Fusion was the only option and after 6 months I'm very pleased with the results. Dr. Abrams was recommended to me and I'm super happy he was my choice. The sciatica pain is gone and my range of motion is better than expected. I would highly recommend Dr. Abrams and DISC if considering spine surgery. read more

Great doctors, but incompetent staff. Messed up paperwork multiple times and got many treatments denied when I was on workers comp (didn't listen to my lawyer on how to fill out the paperwork and get treatments approved). Then when I got tired of that I switched to Banner Aetna which they told me they were in network. Bear in mind I've been in pain this whole time. Went thru the hoops of picking a primary care doctor for the new insurance, getting an appt for the referral to get back in to see Dr. Field, who then put in for a procedure (that was denied multiple times by wc, but has helped in the past). I now, a week later, get a call from them saying that although their office is in network, their surgery center is not and that I should just go to a pain management place. WTF disc!??? You should've said something when I scheduled my appt!!!!!! I've been in pain this whole time and now have to start all over to try and get some sort of treatment. He was a very nice, older Asian gentleman who spoke with a soft voice. Maybe that was the anesthesia... I did a lot of research and met with four surgeons in the valley before deciding on Dr. Field for my surgery. He's a really nice fella! I have finally gotten my life back after having surgery by Dr. Justin Field at Desert Institute for Spine Care. I had severe spinal stenosis and had surgery for L4-L5 laminectomy and fusion on December 2, 2020. I was released today after 6 months!!!!! I haven't had any pain down my leg since the surgery and I can walk 4 miles in an hour without any difficulty!!! The surgery and recovery went so well. I wore a brace for 2 weeks and after that was walking without it. The entire office staff at Desert Institute for Spine Care are so professional and efficient. Three months prior my boyfriend had to have neck surgery which they did a phenomenal job on. Now he had a second surgery lower spine back fusion. More than 35 years ago, my husband was diagnosed with a degenerative back condition but has generally ignored the pain and held the deterioration at bay through a stretching and exercise routine. In December of 2018, he slipped on ice in the mountains of Colorado and, in an instant, felt the wrath of his condition. When his previous methods did not work, he finally succumbed to the thought of surgery. One appointment with Dr. Abrams, and we both felt reassured that we had made the right choice. Dr. Abrams presented several options my husband could consider before committing to surgery. We were quite impressed that a surgeon did not jump to scheduling surgery as Option #1. My husband reluctantly completed three steroid injections, with temporary relief. Surgery became a priority. Throughout the process of pre-op appointments, the operation, and post-op follow-up, Dr. Abrams was able to allay our concerns using diagrams, a plastic model of the spinal, and my husband's MRI to show us the details of the surgery. My husband left the hospital a bit sore, but we were convinced he had made the right decision. And we are equally convinced he has had the best care possible.
