I'm proud I took the advice of friend and gave Design 1 a chance. Typically I read reviews and stay clear of anything less than a 4 for a spa, but...wow I'm so happy with the service I came for a V-day me day and got a facial and massage. I was greeted and offered a drink while I wait for my services. I filled out my paper work and went straight upstairs to change into the robe and put my stuff in the locker. Everything was clean and smelled great, as expected. I opted for a simple facial since I've been receiving treatment from my dermatologist. I explained I had a bit of rosacea and the specialist was more than helpful! She gave me a few tips to help stay hydrated and even gave me a complimentary eye brow treatment. I also asked about exfoliation and waxing for the legs and she offered additional tips. She knew her stuff and really cared about my needs! Finally I moved over to the massage and opted to upgrade to the CBD and Hot stone. It was much needed! My left shoulder and sciatica area has been in pain for weeks. While she worked out those knots, I can tell she had her work cut out for her, but she did a great job of checking in and making sure the pressure was OK. I immediately felt the difference in my shoulders. I'm so pleased with my treatments today and happy that's it's nearby ! I will definitely be back for a facial and exfoliating. Incompetant lying staff. I had a lashe's out on. I gave her a picture and size lashes I wanted. Several times during the application I reminded her of my directions. When she was done I looked in the mirror and was shocked. My eyelashes looked like caterpillars. I immediately told her and she told me she would fix it. When I complained to the manager she said the staff person told her after I left that I wanted big obnoxious eyelashes. She completely lied to cover her own ass. My first negative experience was with lash extensions. At the time I had never worn them and didn't know what to expect. I paid $187. The chemical solution burned like gasoline or turpentine. Within 24 hours the ENTIRE RIGHT EYE worth of lashes had fallen off! I went back and they redid the eye. Within 24 hours again the left eye had all fallen off. TERRIBLE. I've since been to other salons and had great results for HALF the price. Then I had paid $80 for a manicure / acrylic removal. Within 2 days SEVERAL fingers worth of polish had come off! So again I went back in and he repainted the nails with missing polish. Yet again it didn't last over 48 hours. For $80 I expect the polish to last more than a couple days. That's almost $270 FOR NOTHING. What did they do? Sent me a card for $10 off of my next service. . Yeah, no thanks. read more

Wanted the Brazilian blow out and when I called for an appointment, the lady was very nice and helpful with my schedule. I asked her what the total would be and she gave me a price... around $263. I wanted to clarify on the phone that I didn't need the products at the end of the visit, ONLY the actual treatment. She said no problem and that she understood. I get there for my appointment and was excited since this place and stylist was recommended. First of all, the lady who did my hair said maybe TWO words to me the entire time. Mind you- I was there for over an hour and a half. How uncomfortable... I kept trying to talk and ask questions but hardly a response. She wasn't rude, just EXTREMELY unfriendly. Finally everything was done and of course they the products. Told them I didn't need them. They forced me to get the products which added another $103 dollars to my $263. I kindly explained everything over and even told the stylist but they still said I had to get them. They says "it comes with your first visit. It's included but just looks like it's broken down". LIES! Such a lie. Long story short, I didn't want to make a scene and the manager wasn't there so I purchased (and gave a 20% tip, even though the stylist barely spoke to me). The manager did call me the next day and after much explaining gave me money back for the "free" products and I had to return them. It was a horrible experience and I'll never be back. read more

Let me start off by saying I really liked my stylist, Analisa. She did a great cut and style. But the salon, the rest of the staff, the atmosphere, waiting room, salon setting, etc - kinda sucked. I started going to Design 1 at their very first location on Plainfield back in the 1980s. It was a great salon, cozy, had a sense of warmth, big windows to see outdoors, private pedicure rooms. Then they started making changes. Now Design 1 salons give me that feeling of being on a conveyor belt in some industrial factory. High ceilings glorifying heating and cooling systems and girders. There's nothing cozy or enjoyable about this salon experience. Parking was crowded, which was annoying. I walked in and the couple of girls at the counter hardly looked at me. One said in a monotone, "I'll get you checked in. Name?" and that was it. I hung up my coat and sat down. Seating area is tiny, maybe 2-3 seats in a very small corner to the side of the counter. Sinks to wash clients' hair are in the middle of a room, which feels awkward, like that sense of you getting a table in a busy, crowded restaurant with people just too on top of you. There were only 3 sinks (4 maybe?) for a place with a lot of people in it. Instead of each stylist having the products they need at their station, my stylist walked away from me 2-3 times to go walking off in search of styling products she needed. As she styled my hair, another stylist walked up to her to grab one of the products so she could use it on a client. There was pretty much no product at the stylists' stations. My stylist - and again, I really liked her and she did a great job - kept looking at her watch, which made me uncomfortable. I finally asked, "Are you okay for time?" because she just kept looking at her watch. Instead of a relaxing salon experience, I felt like she was maybe running late and would be rushing me. I don't like it when hair stylists try to up-sell me on services or jump on selling me product - that, "So what products are you using?" question intended to open the door to them selling you shampoo, conditioner, styling products on commission. One service she kept nudging me to have was to have her put in 2 hair extensions - each was maybe 1/4" wide, so they were really small. I asked how much it cost. $100. For 2 small strands of human hair to be "taped" into my hair. I passed. The way the salon is set up, you're just in the middle of a lot of commotion - you're in the middle of some part of the one room with people walking around you. That just makes me really uncomfortable. Going to the salon should be a pampering, relaxing, me-time experience. This felt hectic and chaotic and like I was sitting in a warehouse. I tried to make an appointment for color with Analisa, thinking I could put up with that cold, industrial atmosphere and the sense of people being too close in my space, but ended up calling back and cancelling. Even though they gave me 2 coupons, 1 for my second visit and another for a 3rd visit, I'm going back to my previous stylist and salon. Low ceilings, more private stylist stations, stylists who are prepared for client services with styling products in reach, and a warmer atmosphere. read more

We've done massages here, and today a haircut. Let me address both and why the less than great rating: The work for massage was great, but they don't take SpaFinder gift cards same as cash, so no other discounts. Your marketing expenses are not my problem. A gift card should be treated as such. Do NOT go here if you use SpaFinder or SpaWish! Today, we made an appointment for the salon. It was a basic bait and switch, like most spa salons on women's styling. You ask for an associate stylist, they say they have availability even when you insist on the lower tier pricing. When we pay, and not when I scheduled or was greeted, we are told the price is higher than associate stylist. Only a regular stylist was available. I believe this might be against the Michigan Consumer Protection Act. So I paid without a chance to say NO in advance, and against my initial scheduling wish. They are "sure it was a miscommunication." I am a price and detail person, and I told them that up front. They get an "F" on pricing and customer protection. And, the cut I got was like I would get at other "high end places" for $20. Thanks for saving me the lousy $4. I think I know why they did it: I used a SpaWish gift card. They are going to fleece you here unless you are a regular. Caveat emptor! Had a pedicure done here today. I even upgraded my service to a stone massage, etc. Honestly, for the quality of the end result and the actual effort put forth by the technician, this spa is a complete and total rip off. I've had better services for half the price at other salons. I can clearly see areas on my nails where the polish was not applied. Additionally, it is only day 1 and the color is already chipping. I also have polish on my cuticles, which is completely unacceptable for a professional service. My stylist seemed disengaged and ready to get my service done. What I find most interesting: I visited this spa with a friend who happens to be a regular customer. Her pedicure happened to start before mine and end after mine. Her upgraded stone massage was also much more thorough. And she happened to like her end result. But she expressed her concern to me that I wouldn't have a good service, and explained that some of the other friends she has brought here have, in her words, been "ripped off." This is coming from a regular! I, for one, am unimpressed and seriously question, if not the competence, then at least the genuine concern for customer satisfaction of the nail technicians at this salon. I am working on self care....thought I would treat myself to a treatment at Design One. Tried to schedule online and it wouldn't work. Called and after 15 minutes they finally scheduled me (she couldn't find it, didn't know what they offered). I should have known then I was doomed. Went to my appt today and they said I had the wrong location. I always say "the one on Kzoo st." Ok, I was early and had time to drive to the other location. They called to let them know I was on the way. I drive 15 min (on my lunch hour/sick leave). I walk in and they say they can't "accommodate me as the therapist called in sick" What? No call, no text? How about an email??? (that is how they confirmed the appt in the first place). As she says "sorry" and giggles she says "do you want to reschedule?" In the wrong location? Um no. With no communication? Um no. Without having back up staff? No again. How about, "we are so very sorry this happened, how about I reschedule you with a discount" or better yet, "we made a very regreatable error, we will work you in?" Nope. Just a giggle. As I sat crying in my car I googled the nearest massage location...I would take anything, today was my self care day!! I called Massage Envy (right down the street). They were super understanding, got me in and offered something "to help out." Had a wonderful facial with a de stress shoulder and neck treatment. Not what I really wanted but it was an hour of bliss. Signed up for a monthly treatment and scheduled two more procedures. Got a packet full of coupons. I guess it all was supposed to happen in this order. I won't be going to Design One nor do I recommend them. I saved money, got a nice hour of self care and a plan for more, I don't need you any longer Ms. Design One giggle girl. read more

I'm not gonna give this business a rating at all it's not worth it. They're a bunch of crooks. They literally stole $109 from me. Please read the screenshots and it explains everything. Not to mention how bitchy the district manager was when I asked for my money back. They wanted me to literally come back into the salon and correct the problem which was the wrong color root touchup and the stylist left it on my hair way too long. My hair was in such a rotten condition when I left the salon the receptionist literally asked me if I was checking in. What the literal hell? Why would she offer for me to come back in and have the same horrific experience? A gift card for product would've been better. I was missed quoted prices over the phone yet they tell you our cost center is not allowed to quote you prices over the phone. Guess what? I just called and they gave me prices over the phone! There are a bunch of damn liars and crooks that try to run a hair salon business but screw every female imaginable. In my opinion it needs to have new ownership or tear the place down. I used Design 1- Gaines for my wedding for myself, as well as the bridal party, hair and make-up. I'm still new to the area and haven't found a home salon yet. They were recommended to me from a friend. I called the concierge and worked with Monica (who is the sweetest person ever) to set up the appointments. My entire party was from out of town and everyone's hair looked great. Taylor did my hair and did a great job- I loved it and got so many compliments on it. Kenzie did make-up for myself as well as the girls who wanted make-up and she was also great. I went in to have my hair dyed before my wedding and the lady barely consulted me before grabbing a bottle of dye and practically dumping it in my hair. I managed to show her a picture of the exact color I wanted, it was a medium brown with honey tones. What I got was a monotone brown so dark it was almost black. I tried to make the best of it and asked her if she would curl it for me before I left and even that was half assed. I would not recommend this salon. Design 1 is a very nice and clean place, however the majority of my experiences there have been very negative. My last straw was when a hair stylist dyed my hair many shades darker than what we had talked about. When they tried to fix it they made it an even bigger mess and I had to go somewhere else completely. Not only was it a mess, but EXTREMELY overpriced. More recently, my sister got hair extensions from here. The extensions ended up pulling out my sisters hair from the way that they were put in. As someone who has given this place a lot of chances, I do not recommend going to Design 1. The overpriced services and lack of communication of Design 1 are not worth it at all. read more

They found and appointment and I raced out the door to get to the appointment that was in 30 minutes on the other side of town. I came for an appointment with AnnaLisa. I have mid-long hair, and was hoping to get my hair back to full blonde since my baylage had grown out. I've had blonde hair my whole life so I know the color I want, and the color I do not want. I showed her pictures of light, pale blonde hair. I stressed many times that I did not want a brassy, orange, golden color. The stylist told me she could not get it that light on the first visit (which is a lie because other stylists have, she just didn't want to take the time to do it) and preceded to make me sign a makeshift form that made me acknowledge that she potentially couldn't get it that light. I regret signing that and I should have left right then, but I needed my hair colored for an upcoming wedding. Once all of the foils were put on my hair, she immediately took them out, not giving enough time for my color to develop. When the color was done, she only left toner on for less than a minute before rinsing it out (which I know it should have been left on longer). When the hair was blowdried and styled, my hair was golden orange, not pale blonde. It was not even CLOSE to what I wanted. The pieces in the back were blonder in the back and some pieces were lighter/darker than others. On top of that, she dry cut my hair and the cut was very uneven. I had to pay $230 just to turn around and get my hair redone 2 weeks later because. It also made me laugh because at the end of the appointment she recommended shampoo to help get rid of the rust color. I was SO embarrassed of my results. I was going to go back in and ask for at least another toner to try to help, but I knew they'd put me back with the same stylist. I loved the location and the look of the salon, but my hair turned out nothing like how I wanted it. Would not recommend to friends. read more

I have been to this salon quite a few times and have experienced everything from a great time to walking out very unhappy and broke. I am college student I get my hair done MAYBE every 3-4 months if that. So when I go I don't mind paying a little extra for it to be nice. But the pricing was just getting to be too much for me. Every time I went even though I always received the same services my price was different and always higher. The one time that I received color, I wanted to be blonder, I was not happy at the end of the appointment. Stylist told me give it 3 days and if you don't see it getting lighter or you still don't like it call back and I will fix it complimentary. Wonderful right? I went back in 3 days and expressed that I wanted to be all over blonde I received blonde highlights in the front of my face where I could see and a few streaks in the back. I was rushed out with wet hair so that she could make her next appointment. I had to have another salon fix the uneven mess that she had left me with. To think that I paid a stylist 150 dollars for her to screw it up twice and let me walk out of there with wet hair was something that I was never able to go back too. read more

I suffer from migraines and while I didn't want to chop off all my hair, I decided on getting either a bob or a pixie for relief. What I got was something in between. I showed a picture to my stylist of both designs I had in mind saying I was willing to do either, because the goal was to get my very heavy hair thinned and lopped off. The stylist never affirmed what style she said we would go with and just started having a go at my hair. I didn't realize I was in trouble until she was 90% done, and I watched in horror as she cut my hair up to my cheeks. It looks like I had a bowl put over my head and sheared around. My double chin was accentuated as well as my very short neck. The cut I have no either neither a pixie or a bob but an expression of the stylist's creative flare. To say I'm upset is putting it mildly. I thought that by going to an expensive salon I would get a professional cut. I don't have tears enough for when I accidentally look in a mirror. This experience taught me something. I will never, ever go to a salon to get my hair cut again. If I want a bad cut, I will take scissors and just start cutting my own hair. I can't do this again to myself. read more
