I found Debbie Hemingway on Instagram and instantly fell in love with her work. She was quick to respond to e-mails which worked really well for us as we were planning a destination wedding from Canada (6 hour time difference). This was one of the more expensive florists we came across in our search, but Debbie's work is top notch and we just had to prioritize what we wanted to stay within our budget (ceremony backdrop and personal flowers - not table centrepieces). In addition to the 'normal' fee for delivery and set up at the wedding venue, she also charges extra to drop off personal flowers where you are getting ready. Not an issue but just something that I found different to other florists. Overall, I was really happy with the florals at my wedding - I am still swooning over the photos. Debbie made some amazing flowers for my wedding and I would use her again. The only hiccup was communication, email communication was a little confusing and made me feel like she was too busy to help me with my flower choices. On the phone everything was great. Designs By Hemingway is Da Bomb! 10 days before my wedding reception I was at The Wedding Cafe (Ward Warehouse) when my eyes landed on the most beautiful wedding table display created by Designs By Hemingway. I went home, goggled the website....then OMG! Eye candy! Eye candy! I emailed right away & asked if they would be able to create something beautiful for my wedding reception within my budget & 10 days. The next day Debbie Hemingway responded & said "Yes"! (Yeah, got my dream floral designer). A couple days later we met for a short Q&A session. I told her my color & floral preferences. Within a minute, right before my eyes... VOILA...the light bulb was shining above Debbie's head. She said "I've got the idea. It'll be beautiful". With limited time, potential lack of resource, & a small budget I decided to not hinder her process & let her creations be revealed to me at the reception. The day of our wedding reception is when I saw her creations for the first time.....like a guest at my own wedding. They were breathtakingly beautiful! My jaw opened, eyes widened, then I began to feel myself catching my breathe & smiling ear to ear. I stood there admiring the centerpieces & the magic created. Designs by Hemingway have the most beautiful flowers. They did an excellent job with decorating our wedding reception. I also loved my bouquet of flowers. My bridesmaids were very happy as well. My husband and I are slightly picky and we both like to have our contracts and everything perfectly done. Debbie couldn't get the date of our wedding on our contracts correct. We had to remind her several times. As the bride, I was getting very nervous about the fact that she maybe confusing our wedding date with someone's else date. However, she did deliver the flowers early and communicated with us in a professional way. She also reimbursed us for one set of flowers and my flower girl was unable to attend our wedding. She is very pricey compared to other places I shopped around for, perhaps the most expensive. However, her floral work is outstanding! Yes I would recommend Designs by Hemingway. 6 months after my wedding and I'm still thinking about how I should have never used Debbie. I saw red flags left and right. I don't know if it was just a fluke and her lack of service and care was only directed toward me... what a disappointment. Failure to expand her mind and think creatively beyond her small inventory and personal preferences. Failure to have a "can do" attitude. Over priced and a great surprise on my wedding day with dinky bridesmaid bouquets, screwing up the groomsmen boutonnieres, and my bouquet was out of control. Huge, heavy and nothing special. I call this... "failure to report important details to your client and charging the highest prices, therefore designing a LARGE ridiculously simple bouquet ." I wasted time showing her inspiration photos... The few times we jumped on a phone call it was drudgery. She was nice but probably wishing I would just give her complete control ( that's what it felt like) ... perhaps she knew she would probably just do whatever she wanted anyway. I would not consider her a creative customizable floral designer. Her system is made easy for her.... "fill out my long form of questions and write out every detail." Wow. Incredible to me....I'm an Event Producer, I can't imagine not providing an ear for my clients and taking notes on their needs. I hired her as the day of coordinator for my reception alone ( not the ceremony) which I thought would be a good idea since she was doing the tables anyway and my wedding was not that big, which cost me an extra $1100 on top of the thousands in flowers.... she wouldn't even listen to my ideas of how the reception should flow via phone, cut me off and asked me to "fill out her form...." this is after she was paid. It took some pulling teeth to get her to agree on the glass vases I really wanted. Who cares! I'm paying for it. BUY IT. Mark it up. Just do it. She also gave me a big stink about the candles I wanted but did not give me an alternative option to make me happy, again just presented her candles. More profit of course. Again...who cares! MARK IT UP! A day before my wedding she called me and nicely told me the flowers I had selected for my centerpiece design might not be in good shape due to weather issues.... and that my arrangements might be a little skimpy but she would make them look good and not to worry. Thankfully she accomplished what I wanted with the centerpiece design (not too difficult) centerpieces although they were still kind of skimpy.... Both her and her assistant were at the reception... they seemed very inexperienced. Again, I am an event planner. It was hell having to be the one overseeing everything on my own wedding day. The assistant did not know how to use the apple laptop or i tunes. We had a dinner reception with live music during dinner then a transition to a playlist over speakers for the father daughter dance and first dance. Her assistant pressed the wrong song! My Father and I danced to a love song that a Father and daughter should not be dancing to! Unbelievable. I had to have a friend somewhat organize the night on the spot. They were looking to him for "what's next" and what to do.... *deep breath* I even had a guest come up to me worried and asked if they could help out. Not to mention while I was getting ready for my wedding earlier in the day, she sent some random person to my room and asked me to rewrite a final check I gave to her to rent LED up-lights. She couldn't wait till after the wedding... and thought the check should have been written neater. It was really not that bad for a quick hand written check by a bride running around on her big day. I couldn't believe the selfish, forceful and untimely request. I mean didn't you just cash a check for $8000... chill out. Anyway, Any other situation, any other day.... it's easy to let things go. Your wedding day is a a day to cherish and remember. Flowers were always one of the most important aspects of my wedding.... I can't tell you how disappointed I am with Designs By Hemingway. Brides, If you go to Debbie.... let HER tell you what she wants to do for your wedding. Insist on a full on table scape sample that you can approve. Don't expect to have any ideas that are outside of the box or outside of her inventory potential. And DO NOT hire for a day of coordinator. This is my very first yelp. ---- Unprofessional & Unreliable ---- We booked Debbie's rentals a month out, she confirmed all the items, delivery time, setup and everything was good to go. A few weeks out she informed us she would need to deliver the items earlier and we were open to working with her and around her schedule. However, 4 days before our wedding she cancelled completely; she wouldn't work with us on picking up the items ourselves or delivering the items early. Extremely Unprofessional and left us in a bind to find the main pieces needed for our reception. Talk about adding un needed stress to an already stressful event. She should have been up front with us from the beginning or worked with us through everything as we were extremely flexible and willing to help in anyway we could. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that she doesn't run a good reliable business and is extremely hard to work with. She has a couple of really nice pieces; other than that it is tacky and trashy. Not worth your time. read more

Our entertainment provided by Wanna Hula, photos my Eugene Kam, venue by Hale Koa, and day of planning by Sherri Dang were all exceptional, but flowers designed but Debbie Hemingway was sub-par. She 1) did not get the flowers we ordered, 2) was very unorganized, and 3) gave us wilted ugly flowers for the flower girl to drop. To be fair, her flower design of the bouquets were very nice, but when you order flowers over 4 months in advance, you expect together the flowers that you want. Debbie provided some beautiful flowers for our wedding in Hawaii. I was happy with how the arrangements for all our attendants, arch, and table settings turned out. She is also very warm and friendly in person. I took away a couple stars, because we had some communication problems. Getting a hold of Debbie can be difficult, since I think she's overbooked during the wedding season. You may want to take extra precautions to ensure everyone is clear on expectations. For instance, on the day of the wedding, our arch was originally set up facing the wrong direction! Thankfully, our wedding coordinator (Wai from Hawaii Wedding and Events) corrected it. She also told us 3 weeks prior to the wedding that she could no longer do our overhead lighting, which meant we had to hire another vendor last minute and pay the new vendor additional setup fees. I appreciate that she was honest with us and didn't overextend herself. However, I wish she had told us sooner. Also, we felt nickel and dimed when we were already paying a premium price. I was a little disappointed when the jeweled brooch on my bridal bouquet was missing a large stone...especially when I was charged an extra $50+ for it (photo attached). read more

Our first impression of her was, "She doesn't take us seriously!" My husband and I are both very young. As we talked to Debbie, I would ask her about certain arrangements and she would say oh I think that is too expensive for you. She showed us some ugly designs that toally looked low budget. Come on now, I do want a fabulous wedding! So I told her what I wanted and we also talked about linens and designs. She had nothing nice to say. I guess because we are young she thinks we don't have money. But to top it off, we end our meeting and she tells us she will call us in 2 days with a price quote. Debbie doesn't call us for almost a week. She leaves a message saying that She is sorry she didn't get back to us, but someone has already put a deposit for our wedding date. Well how could we have put a deposit if we didn't get a quote? Then she offers to do my flowers, but I have to set them up and pick them up myself. Is she serious or what? If I am spending thousands of dollars on my flowers, someone better be setting them up for me. But that's alright, we got a better florist, YVONNE FLORALS! She was awesome. Since my flowers and decor were so important to me, I chose the best of the best, Yvonne! She even adds a little more to what you order. Once I spoke with her, I chose her right away to do my floral arrangement for my wedding. The moment we met Debbie, we knew she was the woman we wanted to do our design. Her ideas about flower design, decor, and lighting are original and creative. What sets Debbie apart from everyone else, though, is her attention to detail and her "out of the box" ideas for additional touches to your special day. Debbie's "Wedding Tree" at the Bayer Estate is one of those ideas, and it couldn't have been a more perfect touch to our event. During the ceremony, it surrounded my husband and I in the beauty of the islands with just the right touch of class. During the reception, it served as a beautiful gathering place for adults to mingle, and for children to play in a magical space of flowers and lights. Debbie designed the flowers for my wedding. She did an amazing job! On my big day, I was a big freak thinking all of my vendors were going to show up late. However, her staff was on time, and very friendly. The only hiccup, was the fact that I paid $150 for cascading orchids for my cake, and only a few were put on our cake, but not $150 worth :( I'll give Debbie and her crew the benefit of the doubt, that they used our extra cake flowers for our centerpieces.
