We recently stayed in the Hope Valley House for my sister's bachelorette party. The house sleeps up to 9 people; We had 8 in our party and it was the perfect size for us. The house was clean and had plenty of amenities including a full kitchen, full-size washer and dryer, and two full bathrooms. It has plenty of closet space to store your belongings and a giant pantry for food storage. I wish it had a dishwasher to make it easier to clean the dishes, but we made it work with 8 of us to pitch in with cooking and cleaning. It would also be nice to have fans in the bathroom to help with ventilation. There is a nice Dyson hair dryer in the bathroom, but I couldn't use it. I plugged it in and it wouldn't turn on. I brought my own dryer and it didn't work either so I think it has to do with the electrical outlets. I tried multiple outlets and neither dryers worked. Aside from these things, the house is absolutely beautiful and perfect. There's a beautiful back patio area with a grill, fire pit, plenty of seating, and a dining table to dine al fresco. The front area is also stunning. The house is a hop, skip, and a jump away from the river. There's a couple picnic tables right by the river that you can sit and enjoy your coffee, read a book, and take in the stunning scenery. We loved our time at the Hope Valley House! We made great memories here as a group. It's about 30 minutes away from the city, but we rented a car so we could get around pretty easily and that worked well for us. We enjoyed the privacy and serenity we had at Hope Valley House. I would definitely recommend staying here! read more

I can't say enough great things about this place. I've been here twice and both times have been wonderful experiences. An awesome place to get off the grid and disconnect. No tvs or "entertainment" in the cabins (but don't worry, there is WiFi!). They often have a singer come play outside the restaurant in the common area which is nice to enjoy with a beverage. The restaurant is slightly overpriced, but to be expected being a little out in the middle of nowhere. Burger was amazing! Lots of great hiking paths and trails to wander around. Cabins are so cozy and aesthetically pleasing with all the kitchen amenities you might need. The aspen trees throughout the small grounds are beautiful no matter what time of year - highly recommend this place for a glamping getaway! read more

If you are looking for a quiet isolated stay away from the city, this is the perfect spot. A place full of little cabins for your family and pets to enjoy. Also a nice mini sno-park. They have small hiking trails for sledding which is pretty awesome. The trees are so cover with snow which would make great photography. There's not many restaurant nearby besides in the hotel, so I advise to bring food to snack or cook. The hotel has a stove, plates, cups, and utensils to use. There's a fridge, but unfortnately no microwave. The electric fireplace keep you nice and warm. The customer service could be better and the room key attached with a paddle was pretty annoying to carry, but I wouldn't mind staying here again. read more

While the cabins have charm, this place is on the pricey side, and at this price point, there are definitely a few areas that could use some fine-tuning. Pros: * Cute cabins with Bertazzoni stove/oven for cooking, mini-fridge, French press coffee maker, and all utensils needed for your own cooking. * Nice grounds with walkways, hiking paths, picnic tables, and community fire pits. * Dog friendly (extra cost). * Your choice of complimentary mini bottles of white or red wine upon check in. Cons: * Right next to Hwy 88, and yes, the road noise is very loud. I expected the cabins to be more tucked away, but they're not. If you're hoping for peace and quiet, this may not be the best choice. * No daily housekeeping. At this price point, I would expect the bare minimum (trash emptied, fresh towels). * Parking lot can get full with not enough parking for guests. We had to double park at one point. * On-site restaurant (Sorenson's Cafe): - they have you between a rock and a hard place as there aren't many places to grab a bite unless you drive into SLT. - Quality-wise, the food was mediocre at best, and the prices are steep (think $30 for a hamburger). We were told some items are pre-made in large quantities and frozen. - The menu isn't large to begin with, and having multiple items sold out nightly made it feel even more restrictive. - There was only one server during our visit, an older woman with short burgundy hair, who unfortunately lacked any sense of hospitality. We nicknamed her "Angry Annie" because of her consistently rude and unprofessional attitude. She seemed irritated by basic questions and was short with everyone, not just toward us but toward other guests as well. For example, when my husband asked what the soup of the day was, she snapped, "Same as yesterday," as if we should've already known. At the table next to us, they asked for wine, but most bottles were out of stock (as seems to be the norm). When they asked the price of the two remaining available bottles, she became visibly annoyed, muttered that she didn't know, and stormed off to check, clearly irritated that she had to do so. - they have a decent wine list but were consistently out of almost everything. The below are not necessarily a pro or con, just some things to be aware of: * $55/per night to bring your dog * $35/per night "resort fee" - I wouldn't necessarily call this place a "resort" and there aren't many amenities outside of the fire pits and WiFi (no pool, spa, housekeeping, etc) * No tv in rooms * Highly recommend dinner at Caples Lake Restaurant vs Sorenson's. A 15 minute drive but absolutely amazing food with beautiful views of the lake while dining. All in all, and for the price ($400-$500/night), it was a little lacking, both in service and amenities. I haven't made up my mind yet if I would come back, but if I did, I would make sure to bring food to cook my own dinners at night vs having to rely on Sorenson's. read more

Not even the hand towels in the kitchen - super cozy beds that feel like the beds in Germany or Norway. Thick/heavy weight/luxurious comforter - super cute! High end appliances, tons of spices for cooking. Wood burning old style stove. Feels like a true cabin experience - complimentary wine upon arrival and a full bag of coffee beans - gorgeous grounds, love the fire pits - excellent and happy service from housekeeping, front desk, restaurant and bar - excellent Napa style cuisine, the chicken pot pie was a treat. Very much enjoyed the spiced cider. The "airline chicken" on the mushroom risotto was beyond amazing. I love this place a lot. It accommodated almost everything we needed. My family and I came in for one night stay while a snow storm hitting. We enjoyed the load of snowfall that nature brought us. The staffs were really helpful and tried their best to make us feel home. Welcome drink was offered during check in plus goodie bag for my pup. We got to use the old- fashioned sauna room which was nice. Also, the awesome staffs set the camp fire for us, great for roasting marshmallow (we brought our own). I understand the hotel has recently changed ownership. Some facilities, like the cafe and store, are under renovation. The only restaurant there is below average. No continental breakfast during our stay, however it's listing on the website. Basically no other options but paying premium price for a bowl of oatmeal. The tiny lobby only fits two people for public WiFi. It closes at 9pm. I wish there's a map that we could use to find hiking trail or sled area. The cabin we stayed was nice and clean. The only complaint my daughter has was it got real toasty in the middle of night who slept at the attic bed. Otherwise, great amenity. read more

The cabin is small and unevenly heated. Very few amenities in kitchen, no tea only coffee. Bed is comfortable with warm covers. No TV. The restaurant was a disaster. The menu only has a few things on it and you can tell the food is just sitting there in the kitchen waiting to be plated on repeat. Don't get the stew, it had hardly any meat and what was there was tough. We were seated by the bathroom door which was often open after people walked out so that presented it's own problem. I thought this place was going to be great. I was wrong. Rooms weren't ready on time with people waiting at the lobby frustrated. We were up enjoying a snow walk and play day with the dogs in Hope Valley in between winter storms. After such activities, it's nice to be able to sit and enjoy a good beer without going all the way to South Lake Tahoe. Sorensen's Cafe had Black Butte Porter in bottles! I asked an employee whether the resort was dog friendly and was told that the whole resort was dog friendly. They aren't allowed in the restaurant, though. So, we took our bottles and sat on comfy wood chairs around the outdoor fire pit. It was interesting that the name of the old resort was kept for the restaurant. The cabins look cute! Nice location in the mountains, but I wouldn't come back. Too many things I didn't like, an employee was smoking.. I was with my kids in the lawn area & smelled cigarettes. Did not like that. In the bathroom in the ceiling there was black spots all over the ceiling, I'm assuming that's black mold. There's no air ventilation you can turn on in the bathroom other than the window. In the shower it was so confusing to turn on, I had to have front desk come and help. The employee was confused herself & had to call maintenance. As she was trying to turn it on, the handle to adjust the heat of the water just popped off so easily. The bedroom with the queen bed smelled so dirty like dirty socks & shoes. I did like the front desk workers, they were kind & helpful. Also, the construction workers were nice as well. It suck's that desolation hotel had all these unfortunate things. read more

While Hope Valley is beautiful and the unique cabins at Desolation Hotel have a rustic charm, the quality of this establishment has gone from charming to horrible. We just got home from spending a weekend celebrating my birthday, and we unfortunately will not be going back. The biggest issue with the experience at Desolation Hotel - Hope Valley was the food...it was dreadful. Sorensen's Cafe has long been a great spot for a delicious meal while, but that has all changed. The menu is now minuscule, the quality of the food is well below par, and the prices keep rising. While staying at Desolation Hotel - Hope Valley, there are not many choices when it comes to meals...and unfortunately Sorensen's no longer delivers. They do not serve breakfast. And the all day (12 noon to 8 pm) menu has very few selections. The best thing on the menu is by far the Bavarian pretzel starter. For entrees there is a BBQ pulled chicken sandwich (dry chicken that is not flavorful - skip it), hamburger (decent), chicken pot pie, and burgundy beef stew (skimpy portion with minimal meat and a very watered down broth). The long-standing dessert on the menu, berry cobbler, had a really good flavor, but unfortunately the biscuit was RAW in the middle. When this was brought to the attention of the server, she apologized, yet didn't bring a new one. Save yourself from disappointment and just skip Desolation Hotel - Hope Valley and Sorensen's Cafe. read more

Pros: - a nice hiking trail right behind the property, there's also a stream running down the mountain into the property - the log cabin interior is very picturesque and cozy - VERY hot water - complimentary sealed bag of ground coffee - complimentary sealed aluminum bottle with "still water". - kitchen has: a high BTU gas stove, a moderately sized mini fridge with freezer compartment, and a VERY powerful exhaust fan above the stove. I cooked steaks during our stay and smoke was not an issue. - kitchen had a French press and a kettle - the smoke detector works, tested when I forgot to turn on the kitchen exhaust fan while cooking breakfast - gas fireplace that does a great job at heating the entire place - the handmade swing set is a bit of a hazard but my kids loved it. Could use a refresh/rebuild - each cabin seems to be uniquely designed, it was nice to walk around and admire them Cons: - the French press had some coffee grounds in it - found mice droppings in one the beds - super creaky stairs that make me question the construction and integrity - "complimentary wine" given in a disposable plastic cup. for the price we paid for the night I was hoping for a bottle of cheap wine at the least when I heard the word "complimentary" - window screens are broken/missing on the windows - random junk (ladders, generators?, large black garbage bags full of something, etc) strewn all around the property - dusty interior, bring your allergy meds - found mouse droppings on pots/pans, some were also poorly washed - chipped kitchenware - the cabin key is on a big wooden paddle which makes it a quite unwieldy Love at first sight, then your eyes start fixating on the various items in need of improvement. Regardless, we still enjoyed the place and would definitely consider coming back! read more

I had the chance to stay at Desolation Hope Valley with my husband and dog and it was truly one of the best weekends away! Desolation does an amazing job at welcoming your pups while also making their oasis feel like home. We checked into the cabin with the fire already going and were so surprised to see how well stocked the kitchen was - spices, pots/pans/utensils, and literally everything you'd need to make a meal (which is a great idea since there isn't a ton around the Hope Valley area). There's a great restaurant on site called Sorenson's which we loved eating at for lunch/dinner and also had a few breakfast options out each morning. Our favorite parts of the property were the comfy beds, the rustic charm, the fire pits, the private sauna you could make reservations for, and how much fun our puppy had in the snow. We were minutes away some beautiful meadows and the property lets you rent complimentary equipment so we were able to snowshoe for the first time. You're also ~25 min from South Lake Tahoe if you want to get closer to the water. Thank you Desolation Hope Valley for such a wonderful weekend - we will be back! read more

The Sorensen's team literally moved heaven and earth to ensure that my wedding weekend, (the first of their season) was perfect! After the record snowfall of 2022-23, the property needed major restoration. The team brought in heaters to melt the snow, put in French drains, cut down/back damaged trees, added over 6000 sq feet of sod, planted new flowers, and probably so much more that I'm not even aware of. By the time of the wedding, everything was GORGEOUS!!! I was additionally impressed that whenever I stopped by prior to the wedding, everyone was chipping in-- regardless of their title or job role. it was all hands on deck! I am especially grateful to Brandon, Ross, Charley, Monica, Chey, Brianne, Zack and Jay. No request was too big or small for them, and they always greeted us with a smile and can-do attitude. By the end of weekend we were greeted with hugs and all felt like family! I will be eternally grateful to this team, Sorensen's and Desolation Hotel Hope Valley for making my wedding weekend MAGICAL!!! The food was delicious, service outstanding and setting perfection! I didn't get a chance to stay here but stopped in for the beautiful yellows leaves on the tree during mid October's for some pictures. This place is beautiful with variety of cabinet for rent. The trees was full of yellow leaves that you can't stop staring at its beauty. This is like a romantic getaways for a couple. The scenic was just too beautiful with the swing and the small creek surrounding. Those who want a retreated or a alone times, this is the place to check in. I believed it is expensive not cheap as you need to book advance. Overall, I think I will reserves one night in here just to be alone. But I recommend coming here during mid fall of October through the end of October as the leaves changes it colors. read more

My daughter and I had a chance for a last-minute getaway for some hiking with our pups and this spot was PERFECT! The staff at check in and departure were delightful. We stayed in Tanglewood and it was perfect for us with two rooms and a small kitchen. We ate at the restaurant one night and both had burgers (one real and one vegetarian) and they were delicious especially accompanied by the complimentary bottle of wine. The location is beautiful and was perfect for the hikes we'd planned, one near Luther Pass and one in the Carson Wilderness. What a lovely place to come home to after a long day in the hills! The customer service was such that she welcomed us as if we were old friends. As the first point of contact she set the bar high for the other employees. Danielle and Frankie who also tended to us at the front desk equalled Nicoles hospitality. Our expectations were exceeded by all. The cabins (each with various names) are throw backs to a simpler time and have a rustic but charming allure. If you are looking for todays "resort" amenities you may not find this place as charming as we did. The Sorenson, as I understand, has new ownership and have a master plan for upgrades. This resort was first opened in 1929. The cabin we had, Juniper, was comfortable, clean and roomy. Our cabin had two beds and a small kitchnette sitting area. The landscaping is natural and serene. The location is on Highway 88 and easy to find. This location is only 30 minutes from So. Lake Tahoe and a great alternative from the typical "location" accomodations. If you fish or participate in any outdoorsman activities, this is a very centralized location as a home base. There is a small restaurant that is not your typical "Cafe" as it goes by. The restaurant staff (Christine, a gentleman and another lady whose names I do not recall) provided 5 star service and were attentive as servers. The food was above average and priced typical of many resort hotel restaurants. Also highly recommend Alpine Massage 1-530-320-0626 Michelle is very caring and attentively your needs. I had originally planned to stay for 5 nights but due to a health issue I had to leave two days early. The management was very understanding and credited me back a prorated portion of my prepaid remittance. This I did not ask for or expect. It was done out of genuine care and concern for my well being. This was my first weekend staying at one of the cabins here after driving past this resort for years. The cabin was small, cute and amazingly clean. We brought our two Golden Doodles with us, this place is dog friendly, and I made sure to pack allergy pills because I assumed since we were staying in a cabin that allowed dogs, there would be enough dog hair left over from past dogs that I would cause me to have itchy eyes and sneeze but that was not the case at all!!! The cabins were so clean! The cabin had a small wood stove and they stock it firewood so we kept a fire going the full three days we were there. The room had an assortment of board games and we played all of them while drinKing wine and champagne. The restaurant on site had really good food and a nice wine selection. Make dinner reservations and I recommend their famous stew. They have a sauna, fire pit, snow shoes. Hiking trails are directly behind the cabins and are clearly marked. My husband and and and I have enjoyed visiting and even eating at this resort destination in the past. We went in today so my husband could book our stay for our upcoming Wedding Anniversary however the hostess at the counter was incredibly rude. As soon as we walked in she kept asking if we were there for lunch. My husband was trying to talk to her about the cabins, but I really needed to use the restroom. I was going to coerce my husband to have lunch while we were there because I loved the scenic location, but she continued to talk to me as if I was a vagrant who was unwanted. She told me if we were not there to have lunch to use the porta potty out by the road. She insisted that the restroom was for paying customers. What the Hell? She never let me speak. I felt so mistreated, and left. My husband could tell I was upset and followed me out and I said we weren't staying here for our Anniversary. read more

Great getaway! It's the perfect place to enjoy peaceful surroundings and set down all your devices (no cell service and wifi is best at main building). We stayed in Alpine cabin, so cozy and clean. We had been here several years ago when it was Sorensens and it was nice then, but now it's so updated and all refreshed. The kitchen is well equipped with stove, oven, nice pots and pans and dishes (but no microwave) . I liked the French press and coffee they provide. The beds were comfortable and the whole place was spotless. We also like the restaurant on the premises. They only serve lunch and dinner, but also have a couple "grab and go" items for breakfast. Coffee and tea is also available complimentary. We will definitely come back. We love this place. read more

Our recent stop for lunch was a mediocre experience. One of us had the famous stew while the other had a sandwich. The sandwich was reasonably priced, had good flavor, and a decent value for the cost. The stew was a different matter. The large bowl of stew, for $14, was watery and had only 3-4 pieces of beef. Most of the remaining ingredients were had to discern, but seemed to be mushrooms. It also came with a small dinner roll. There was barely enough subsistence in the stew for a side dish. The setting is lovely and the cabins appear nice, but based on our meal, the food is overpriced. read more

This makes me so sad. My husband & I have many fond memories at Sorensen's. When planning a trip to Tahoe for a special day in our lives (vow renewal), I was sad to learn that Sorensen's is under new ownership (Wylder) but I was excited to check out one of their newly renovated cabins. I spoke to a very nice lady on the phone multiple times over the past month & a half. I booked one of the renovated cabins, spending just over $500 for one night. I even spoke to this nice lady the day before our stay to ask about early check in & she said that as long as no one booked that cabin that night, it was clean & ready for us for the next day. We drove up to Hope Valley with our daughter & newborn son, hair & makeup ready for our ceremony, just had to check into our cabin, change into our nice outfits & head over to our ceremony location. My husband came out with a look on his face, knowing that I would be disappointed. My cabin was now unavailable. Both renovated cabins were unavailable despite my paying the higher rate to ensure that I would be in one. The man at the front desk said that they could not guarantee which cabin a guest would be in & also accused me of not speaking to the very nice lady the day before. He was rude & didn't seem apologetic for a lack of communication or something on their end.. this was not my fault! I was told I would be getting the Wa She Shu cabin. But he did adjust the rate to $375 & said that all he could do is offer to pay for our dinner. I was upset & stressed because we needed to get on the road. Side note: we have stayed at Sorensen's before. I know what these rustic cabins look like inside. But when checking out the Wylder website, you will only see photos of the renovated cabins. You will be sorely disappointed if that's what you're expecting every cabin to look like inside. So we walk into the Tanglewood cabin, it smells of pet urine, there is a large stain on the carpet infront of the fireplace, I'm standing there with my newborn & my pretty dress & just cried. (I sound like a huge brat right now but this is not what I booked & not how this day was supposed to go) We changed into our clothes really quick, got into the car & my husband checked us out. We will be paying $160ish for the taxes & cleaning fee (which is fine & understandable considering our last minute cancellation.. & I say "will be" because I have yet to receive my refund for the balance.. keeping an eye on that) & we ended up staying over near Stateline. The lack of communication or employee training or whatever happened on their end, the customer service is not what it used to be.... sadly, we won't be staying ever again. read more

This was my second stay over visit. Like many, I discovered Sorensen's on a day trip....I'd been to Grover Hot Springs and ventured out. Had lunch at the restaurant then walked around the grounds. I'm crazy for Aspen's, and the Grove that contains Sorensen's is amazing! After reading some other reviews, I must comment on the one dated Oct 15th, using the word Mississippi. My guess is they comments were total projection on their part...maybe they are entitled and rude people, from a city, that expect immediate action. I love the owner's response...lovely. I saved all summer to take myself here for my milestone Birthday, taking advantage of their special-3 nights for price of 2 mid-week. I could not have had a better time! Loved my cozy cabin, a bottle of birthday wine awaited me, and many of the trees still had their colorful leaves. The restaurant is top notch. One evening I had the seafood pasta...it was divine! Jumbo shrimp and sea scallops with chunks of wild salmon in a delicate cream sauce. I love that they serve their Beef Burgundy Stew all day! I dined on that another evening. Besides all this wonderful-ness, what makes this all come together is the staff....their excellent hospitality is evident. Come to the mountains and get their good tidings...unplug and relax in Hope Valley! You can't go wrong at Sorensen's Resort. read more

2.5 stars. This review is for the accommodations because we didn't eat there. No comments on the sauna because we didn't use it. Pluses: Tea, coffee & hot chocolate complimentary for guests during the day. They allow pets - or that could be a minus for some. The cabin was clean & not worn/run down. There were adequate pots & pans for cooking. Minuses: There was no electricity from when we arrived at 3pm until after 11pm, due to a construction mishap on the property. There was a gas stove, but cooking dinner in the dark was a challenge, even if we were both smart enough to bring flashlights - I would have been a stellar girl scout. Couldn't charge our phones or listen to music. Plus we had to worry about all the food we brought going bad because the fridge was off for so long. No we weren't offered a partial refund or free meal during our stay for the inconvenience. There was a small water heater in the cabin. So we could either wash the dishes or take a shower, not both. Showering in the dark was also inconvenient. I had to skip washing my hair because was afraid there wasn't enough water & the shower head sprayed a mist which would have taken forever to rinse my hair. Plus there was no electricity to blow dry my hair. The shower stall was pretty tiny & I'm a small person. Another downside is there is no heater in the bathroom so it was freeezing cold! There is nothing worse than getting out of a warm shower into a meat locker/cold room. There was only 1 gas stove/heater, located in the sleeping area, to heat the entire cabin. Not enough. At check-in we were told that there were problems with the heater. Well, I wish they placed us in another cabin because at about 1am the heater turned off so we froze all night despite the down comforter - uh it was in the 30-40's that night! The night was so cold that the little pond near the entrance was partially frozen in the morning. Bed was a full/double, not a Queen as stated in the description. No sitting area so we either had to sit in at the chilly kitchen table or on the small full/double bed. There was 1 chair in the sleeping area but there were 2 of us. Generally wouldn't be an issue but there isn't much to do in the area at night so you're likely to be in the cabin. Yes, the cabins are located near the road so traffic noise may be an issue. read more

My husband, dog and I spent a magical weekend enjoying our cozy cabin (Sheepherder), lovely service and winter wonderland surroundings. We were provided with plenty of wood for our little Franklin stove. The cabin came with heaters as well, so we were always toasty. The sauna is also wonderful and a great place to meet some of the other guests. We had a long snowshoe hike up a trail (fire road) that starts adjacent to the resort. It was fun to introduce our dog to powder! We feel so fortunate to have been able to spend a weekend at Sorensen's in the winter and have already made reservations for our next visit in the fall.
