This is my second review for Desoto Animal Hospital! I certainly wish I could give them a 20 on how well my husband and I are absolutely thrilled with how well Dr Warren Harper and the Vet Techs plus front desk treated us. We lost our 9yr old Beloved White Schnauzer January 6th 2026. I'm sorry my husband and I have been feeling depressed and lonely without Toby so my review is late. Long story short our boy was misdiagnosed with another Office and I had gone there almost 40yrs.He retired and it was time for Toby's 7th Annual Checkup. He had been eating a lot and drinking so much water. The Dr checked him did all his bloodwork etc. After that he asked if he could do a CT scan which we gave permission. He said he thought Toby had bladder stones. Well there were no stones but the Dr told us possibly a couple were not located where he couldn't see them. Put him on Bladder Food and he didn't tolerate it. Toby couldn't tolerate anything but Royal Canine Gastro fat free. I called he told us just to change him back to what he had been eating. We did and our boy proceeded to get worse drinking water, eating toilet paper and wanting to eat and eat. So we took him to Desoto Animal Hospital and Dr Harper came in and I'm sure with all my questions and asking to repeat things he may have been annoyed and he wasn't. He looked at the bloodwork from the other Dr and his bloodwork and came in and said the numbers elevated extremely. Asked if we could take him in at 8am the next day and they kept him all day testing. We picked him up and was told the Dr would be calling as soon as the tests were done. We got a call that was hard to swallow and so gently told us our boy had Cushings Disease. We had never heard of it. Had a tumor on his pituitary gland and not removable. They pass away within 2yrs maximum and he had already had it. Pets pant excessively trying to breathe and it presses on his diaphragm. The whole disease shuts down thier liver kidneys etc. We never left him and spent the last year with all sorts of issues and finally he wouldn't eat and I kept boiling boneless chicken and steamed carrots. I tried not to bother Dr Harper but sometimes I needed to know if different things were normal he wasn't doing. He was all bloated up and went from corner to corner to get comfortable. My husband wanted to get him through Christmas but we do feel bad but this disease is absolutely horrible and I pray for any sweet pet that gets it and thier family. I've seen some unfair reviews here on this Clinic and in particular Dr Harper. He treated all of us like we were his family and took his lunch or checking on his animals he had that were sick and had surgery to put Toby ( alias Tobias) Dr Harper would call him occasionally to tease and he wasn't in a hurry and had everything set up nicely and said when we were ready very gently put him out of pain. He wrapped him in a nice blanket and took him to the back and they did his paw prints and nose print then cut some fur and they have a navy blue paw keychain and they put some fur in and on one side we can see it! Another nice surprise we got within a week Dr Harper sent us a very nice card and wrote in it and all the staff wrote and signed it! THANKYOU TO DR. HARPER and Desoto Animal Hospital for the care you gave our boy! We miss him but you helped us through it! Every time we took our Maltese mix there, we were very happy with their service. Today's visit was sad in that it was time to let our 17 year old baby go. I had no problem with the vet care. I found Dr. Harper acceptable. In my opinion, the front staff could be friendlier. My major problem is with their "civility clause". They make you sign a document saying they will refuse you service if you leave a negative review. I think this violates the Consumer Review Fairness Act. I left a 3 star review on Google after dropping my animal off after witnessing another consumer having a negative interaction with the front staff. I had not enjoyed my interactions with the front staff either 2 hours later I received a call not about my animal but about my review. Dr. Harper refused my animal service because I would not delete my review. How can anyone trust their reviews with policies like that? I was reading on the FTC website that 84% of people trust reviews like a referral from a friend. Yikes! read more

It pains me to write this. I went to DeSoto Animal Clinic for 15 years and had great experiences. But a few months ago, my new rescue cat got sick. I ended up spending $4K w/DAC and their weekend/night company: BVE Bradenton Vet Emergency. They charged as much as $1600.00 for a single night. I ended up getting help and paying FAR LESS $$$ at The Cat Depot in Sarasota. I get the impression that DAC/BVE bilked me as they have an expensive new bldg to pay for. I will never, in a million years ever return to them. They also play this "game": If you ask DAC, they refer you to BVE. If you ask BVE, they refer you to DAC. I wish I had the time to sue them. $1600/night for a cat? Come on, that's ridiculous. YOU STOLE FROM ME. read more

We live in Sarasota but needed a second opinion for our cat Clarence. We brought him to Dr. Harper who took great care of him and gave us some different medications to try, which helped a lot! They were in the midst of a major renovation but this didn't affect their service level, we were very impressed with everyone's attitudes and professionalism. I brought my dog for shots during off-hours. I said I'd come back, but the girl at the desk suggested that she would check if someone was available now. A tech said, "Yes, they were available in a few minutes," and the girl asked if I could wait a few minutes. Forty minutes later, I reminded them we were waiting at her suggestion, and she said, "Well, it's their off time, and they are probably busy." Three girls were at the desk, looking at me unapologetically and rudely because I was annoyed she told me to wait and forgot about me. Again, no apologies no compassion, my dog had been sitting quietly for 40 minutes, they are not nice people and I am switching vets and don't recommend them. This is the response I received from the Vets office after my email and my response. Mrs. Stein, It was disappointing to read your negative review about our practice. Please be aware that we were willing to provide services for your pet even though it was not during our designated technician hours. As you know, our staff was reduced during lunch rotations, and the doctors and technicians were caring for hospitalized patients. No one enjoys prolonged waiting times, but sometimes it is unavoidable. Your review indicates you will be "switching vets". Once I was informed that it was not the usual time for drop-in vaccines, I immediately said I would return. However, you suggested I wait to check if a technician could see us. Eventually, I approached the desk, and with three women staring at me, there was no attempt to rectify the situation, just defensiveness that it wasn't the actual time to be there. We pay a substantial amount for Delilah's care, and I am paying for a service, not receiving a favor. I would have gladly returned at a later time. Being treated courteously matters to me, which was not the case today. Other customers should be aware of what to expect from the staff at the front desk. From Dr. Jim Kanzler and Dr. Vondrasek to Dr. Alex Kanzler and his team they have dedicated their careers to provide the state of the art treatment for our girls. Along with DeSoto, their companion emergency care service, Bradenton Emergency Vets, has been an outstanding and caring place for those unexpected serious illnesses we have experienced. I could not think of a better place for our pups. Unfortunately, we have recently moved out of state and have had to establish ourselves with new vet care. I'm from IL and was in a RV resort for a month and my cat was sick for a couple of days and they got me in and he had pancreatitis. They tended to him and sent us home with medicine and food. I can't say enough nice things about Dr. Claunch. Our 16-year old Westie was very ill with kidney disease and pancreatitis. I wanted to see if more aggressive treatment was possible than what we were currently receiving from another vet. They fit us in because I thought they were the Bradenton Pet Hospital E.R. (which we had been to prior but didn't realize they have different hours). He had to deliver the news that she was gravely ill and could go at any time so we made the appt. for euthanasia the next day. At my request, he even called our home that evening to reassure my family that it was the right thing to do and that even with kidney dialysis, her chances weren't good. Dr. Claunch was patient, kind, and thorough and on the day of, was sensitive and so understanding. It was incredibly painful for us, but by being so kind, he definitely made it easier. read more

The nicest people ever. Thank you DeSoto Animal clinic so much for going above and beyond to help our little guy feel better. During Memorial Day weekend our kitten got really sick and DAC squeezed us in and got him the care he needed even though he had never been to the clinic before. That wasn't what won me over. After we left they called two different times to check in on him and see if the medicine was helping. Then the vet himself called to clarify a note on one of the additional prescriptions to ensure we were properly dosing. It was a really scary experience not knowing what was wrong but DAC made me feel comfortable, explained everything and was upfront and honest about the costs associated (we had to sedate him and have some xrays done to figure out what was wrong). Now Jaws is back to his normal self and doing great. This will be his Vet now on as long as we live here. read more

I started bringing my precious pets to Dr James Kanzler in 1983 when his clinic was newly opened. Through the years, Dr Kanzler, his wife, a couple of his vets added to his staff, now his son (Dr Alex Kanzler) & his office staff (Kristi, Ashley et al) have been taking care of my multiple cats from birth to death. Let me tell you a story of my beloved Sashi. A little over 3 years ago, I moved from Bradenton to Downtown Sarasota & after considerable deliberation, decided it would be easier & less stressful on my pets to go to a closer vet (b/c everyone knows how much kitties love to go on car rides to the vet.) I chose carefully & with a recommendation from a close friend picked a vet I thought I could trust. That decision turned out to be a devastating & guilt provoking mistake, but I will save the bulk of that review for her practice. But in summary, during his care between March 21st & June 9th, the 2 vets & the office staff did not communicate with me about Sashi's response to treatment or his wellbeing, did not provide timely treatment planning (I was being punished for paying part of the bill in 2 pieces) & was so obsessed with the immediate money owed them that they even threatened & withheld medication to help stabilize his critical condition. The results of that mistake, I believe cost my sweet boy at least several weeks of unnecessary suffering in his last 2.5 months of his life (which is the guilt I carry.) I will never return there again. But when it came time to put him out of his misery, I chose to return to the DeSoto Animal Clinic for his final medical procedure. Dr James Kanzler's son Dr Alex showed the same kindness I had come to depend on during the previous 35 years from his father. As I chose to receive his ashes, picked his urn & said goodby to him as he drifted off this earth, the staff treated me with both dignity & compassion as if my 3-year absence did not exist. When I exited the exam room, broken hearted by the loss of my Sashi (AKA my 'Sweetest Heart',) the receptionist whispered "go on home" b/c paying the bill could wait a bit. As I write this in tears, I can tell anyone who is looking for a superb team of veterinarians providing medical services with an amazing office staff to manage their appointments, accounts & provide comfort at the most needed times, the DeSoto Animal Clinic is where you want to go with your beloved pets. read more

Called the day office today and asked when the Emergency clinic opens. Told 5:30. Get there 10 minutes before. Vet doesn't even arrive until 6! $130 just to get in the door. My dog was there for allergies. So the tech came in, never acknowledged my dog, and went on to tell me that it could be over an hour to be seen. There were 2 ahead of me. I am so sick and tired of companies making huge profits over the care of animals and customer service in the room was abysmal, to say the least. Here is an idea, stop turning vet offices into luxury places (this place had a coffee bar) and try saving customers some money so they can take care of their animals in these hard times! read more

Took my Dobe in for a nail trim when we first moved here back in July/August. It was a Saturday, so chaotic, but I got there at my appointment time as requested. My dog was distracted by other dogs and whimpering/crying/running in circles. They wanted me to fill out 2 pages of paperwork. I asked if I could sit in a room because my dog was obviously a lot to handle while doing paperwork. They said no? So they watched me struggle while other patrons made comments like "I can't hear over this dog barking"... you're at a vet!?!?! I asked if I could come back with my dog while her nails were trimmed. We were new patients and I wanted to be with her in case something went wrong. They told me no, they don't let anyone back there. Uneasy and frustrated, I let my dog go and expressed how weird this was and didn't like this. Overall, the nails were clipped really well but I decided not to come back due to the atmosphere. I took my GSD in for a skin issue. She was obviously very nervous and stressed about being there, which manifested in bad behavior, barking and leash pulling. They made zero effort to put her at ease. We were placed in a back room next to their ongoing construction with much banging and hammering and power tool noises. I was even stressed by the time we got out of there. The vet, Dr Coan, was fine clinically, but she also made zero attempt to connect with and calm my dog. Her assistant nearly choking my dog out by pulling hard on her martingale collar didn't help. Do these people understand dog psychology? This is a fantastic clinic. I have gone now twice and I really love how kind and caring the doctors, and vet staff are. I just called because my dog was having a hot spot issue and the receptionist on the phone was so patient, and extremely wonderful to help give me advice on what I could do in the mean time. They had no appointments because this place is so good it's always booked up far in advance. A couple weeks usually. She did offer walk in times for me to be worked in, but I appreciate her listening to me and giving me tips on how I could take care of my dog, as well as pricing for what they may charge me for if I come in. Extremely considerate, and I appreciate it for when I'm concerned and confused. She at least calmed my nerves for now and gave me suggestions after things get better or worse for my dog! No wonder why they almost never have open appointments. It's not a terrible problem to have. A good sign. I'll probably bring my pet in if the issue does not seem to get better after my care. Thanks! The only problem I have with the clinic, besides that and the pricing just being being kind of expensive for all the different procedures and meds. We are new to the area, and went into panic mode when our 14lb shih Tzu got scared and had some kind of attack, we thought could be a seizure... I'll spare you the details, as it got a little gross. Thanks to the amazing reviews I'd seen on Nextdoor for this Clinic, it was the 1st I called! When I was asked if I could be placed in a brief hold, I explained that we were having an emergency. I was allowed to explain the situation & the employee told me to come right in. (It was 4:30 pm on a Friday & they were slammed). But they took our pup in right away & about an hour later had a full diagnosis for us. It was obvious they'd spent time with her, cleaned her up and observed her, even took her for a short walk(as Dr. Alex Kanzler had noticed her luxating patella, which is something I've had to point out to vets in the past). Dr. Kanzler did not seem rushed at all as he talked to us about other small issues he'd observed during his short time with her.(which I found surprising and truly appreciated on a Friday evening!!). We were told to watch her closely and if anything seemed off, bring her back as they have emergency staff available 24/7. We got our cat as a Christmas gift back in 2004 and have been taking him to DeSoto Animal Clinic. My parents have always taken their pets and my wife's parents too. They are a friendly staff who know how much a pet is a member of the family and they treat them that way! The doctors, assistant's, font conter staff all treat the pets with love as they were their own. The doctors are professional and let you know what's happening every step of the way as they examine your pet(s). I had a walk in appointment on Mar22. My goldendoodle was lethargic and in pain. When we got there at 9 am we were told we were #6 on the wait list. I put my dog on the bench directly in front of the receptionist. We waited almost 4 hours to be seen while my dog was almost lifeless and writhing in pain. 4 HOURS!!! I asked the receptionist how long we had to wait and thought we were #6 and she snapped back at me but did nothing to escalate getting my dog getting to see a doctor. When we finally got in, the doctor did blood test. She informed me Molly had pancreatitis and there was a large spot on her liver. She suggested an x-ray and scan and keeping her overnight to try to get her to eat. She seemed knowledgeable but very business like. I can't blame her for the diagnosis. I spoke to the doctor the next morning to see how Molly was and what my options were. Based on that I decided to pick up my dog that after 2 pm. When I came to pick her up I was asked who I was and did I have an appointment? WOW! forget the 4 hour wait??? I paid my bill (over$1700.00) and took Molly home. the doctor never came out to discuss Molly's condition or offer advice. A tech met me with what she called a bag of goodies (expensive medications). I spoke to the doctor the next morning and the options weren't promising and I new Molly wasn't going to make it. I was heart broken. Choked up, I asked about euthanization. I was told , yes we do that service. Just make an appointment with the receptionist but there isn't any openings until after April 1 (7 days later). Empathy, compassion, sympathy? Not at DeSoto Animal Clinic. I never heard from DeSoto again as a follow up to Molly's condition until almost 5 on Friday the 26th. It wasn't from a doctor but a follow up from the receptionist. I was not kind to her and told her I wouldn't ever use them again. We took Molly to Sarasota Animal Hospital the next day to be euthanized. The kindness, compassion and sympathy and understanding by the Sarasota team was beyond what we expected. I am forever grateful to them. Here's the sad part, while we were having Molly put down, I was getting a call from DeSoto telling me how sweet Molly was and that they were concerned about the comments I left with the receptionist and wanted to follow up. Read this DeSoto and make some changes. read more

Even though you are a good Veterinary Clinic with good vets and technicians. I think your pricing is got a little bit out of hand. To charge a total of $80 for anal glands and nails done on two small dogs is asinine. That is the pricing for the tech visit . Not at the veterinarian visit . Needed to get in fairly urgently (IMO) & wasn't an established client or patient (new dog for me & new town so my old vet was too far away). Thankfully this practice put politics/policy/bureaucracy aside & was willing to consider the health & comfort of the animal first & gave me an appointment within :45 minutes. Friendly phone service, friendly front desk staff, clean lobby area w/ ample seating, lots of counter space for check-in/out & enough waiting room floorspace to maneuver around so you aren't all crowded up on top of each other (let's face it, not all dogs are friendly.....GRRRR!). Wait time was minimal & once taken back, the Dr. was promptly behind the technician after she completed her work. The exam room was clean w/ no funky smells or stains. The technician was very sweet to my dog, efficient & seemed knowledgeable. The Dr. was personable, used everyday language, was attentive to my concerns/my dog & didn't rush through the consult or exam (even though I clearly wasn't in their plan for the day!).....I felt very comfortable explaining my dog's issues & symptoms. Exam & meds were priced comparably to my vet in Tampa. May have been just a teensy bit higher, but nothing that gave me sticker shock or would make me go elsewhere. My only issues....he went to Auburn & a few too many pictures of cats throughout the practice, but hey, guess I can't hold that against them ;) read more

I have been taking my dogs and cat to this place regularly. Overall, service has been great so far. We had a little hiccup when I had to euthanize my 18 year old cat, but the issue was promptly solved. Dr. Alex was very compassionate and understanding in stopping my suffering cat's pain. read more

I just moved to Bradenton and was referred to Dr. Alex Kanzler. I really appreciated the fact he didn't try to "sell" me anything and answered all of my questions and did not make me feel rushed. I will be a long term client thanks to him! Two reasons I didn't give a 5 star rating...my appt was at 11:00 and we didn't see the doctor until 11:45. I hope that was because it was on a Monday and and not a regular wait time. And secondly they took my dog out of the room to check her vitals. My experience has always been they check the vitals in the room with the owner present. Due to the fact my dog has had many surgeries, she is TERRIFIED of being in the vet and would be much more comforted if I stay with her at all times. I will ask next time to have her vitals checked in the room with me. If you are looking for a Vet - this is your place. read more

Our dog was scratching lots! We were using Frontline so really didn't think fleas. We had him groomed and asked the groomer she saw none either. We decided to call the clinic. (A friend recommended DeSoto). We called and were seen within a couple hours. Everyone was so friendly and caring to us and our dog. They found a couple fleas and recommended treatment. We are snowbirds and they recommend a different flea & tick treatment for Florida. They gave the dog a shot and told us it would kill the fleas in a couple hours. He had relief almost immediately. But when I questioned why I was charged $50 to move my dog from the back of the building to the front of the building, after an overnight stay, they decided to take offense. I never once questioned their expertise, only the charge. Because of my question, they have decided they no longer want my business. Or my money I guess. The younger veterinarian/owner appears professional and nice..... UNTIL you make a statement or question something that, in any way, might have a slightly negative (and totally true ) aspect to it- which is, actually, why you're asking the question and trying to get to the truth in the first place! But if you don't "adore" everything about this place.... and if you actually have the audacity to nicely and professionally "question" a policy or procedure here, the next time(and last time) you go here, suddenly you have become the number one enemy of this vet. and the entire little group of staffers who- regardless of what the subject might be- appear to always stick together, each having the exact same answer.. nearly word for word.. as the others. Maybe a bit of job security at work here? How sad! Because most everyone coming here has a beloved pet they are trying to get help for.... and no one needs a few "young somethings" trying to make us feel uncomfortable at such a vulnerable time, when the concern of Everyone should be in getting and giving the best possible care for every sick furbaby in that establishment! How very sad that in this context whispers and difficulties arise when something as simple as getting a needed copy of a procedure or office visit is made difficult and possibly "can't be found" at that time.
