Destination 814 (Lagrange, IN) - "modern" bar in Amish county Made a successful trip to try Destination 814 in Lagrange. We have tried dropping in here during a busy Friday or Saturday dinner hour. The wait can be very long as Destination 814 is rather popular in these parts. You can find Destination 814 near the downtown Lagrange area. Head north on IN 3 or I69 about an hour. Destination 814 is a kind of a "modern" bar located in a more rural-small town area. The inside would remind you of a typical small sports bar (see pictures). The whole place is rather small but nicely decorated with sports stuff. The bar is very attractive - lots of back lit bottles to entice you. It only seats about 11 people. The dining room seats about 46 people. It can handle a couple groups of 6-8 people. There is an outdoor area that will seat about 16 people. The team here was very friendly and hustled the refills and food. They had plenty of help on this night. The menu is not overly large but it seem to have something for everyone (see picture). Salads, burgers, wraps, flatbreads and a variety of entrees are reasonably priced in the $15-20 range. They have a large menu for bourbons, whiskeys, beers and cocktails. Note that none of the drinks have prices - which is becoming more common place. We started with the garlic buns. These are pretty popular and have good reviews for good reasons. They are soft and buttery with a slight garlic taste. The beer cheese had a nice taste and thickness. Easy to dip. Not a strong cheese flavor. My wife had the Crab Rangoon flatbread. She really liked the amount of crab in the sauce. The crunchy wontons were a nice add. The sweet Asian chili sauce was fairly standard. The buttered chicken flatbread (Indian style) sounded delicious as well. My cod basket was very good. Three surprisingly large pieces of fish amongst French fries. The cod was fresh tasting and flaky. The batter was thin and stuck to the fish well. Not a lot of distinguishable seasoning in the batter. The tartar sauce was slightly sweet mayo mixture with a very mild dill taste. The fries were a little bit thicker in size and had a slight crisp. The seasoning gave you some salty southwest styling. Overall, I would encourage you to drop in and try Destination 814. Go early, lunch to 5p, if you are making a special trip...if you want to avoid the big crowd. read more

A hidden gem! Went to Shipshewana for a concert and we're looking around for anywhere to be open past 4/5 for dinner. Stumbled upon this place and it was excellent! First off fantastic service, and recommended the garlic chicken as the most popular dish. It was very good and huge portion. Wife had the special and it was even better than mine. Really cool atmosphere, very popular spot at least on the Saturday we went. Doubt we will be in the area again, but if we do, we will be back! read more

From the options in the area this was a great spot to meet some friends in between South Bend and Fort Wayne, approx. 45 min each way. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. For 5 pm on a Friday, we didn't have to wait at all before getting seated but by the time we left around 6:30 pm there was definitely a line out the door. We felt a little rushed but everything came out in a very timely matter. Drinks were delightful and they had a bunch of fun options to choose from, including lists of whiskey flights. The shrimp scampi flatbread was filling and yummy and my husband had the blue gill special tonight, in-which he said the flavor was great although the fish itself was pretty flimsy. We found this place through Yelp while staying in Shipshewana, and we're delighted we did! The decor and menu are current, and it's obviously popular - the line was out the door by the time we left. We're spoiled for food options at home in California, and our salmon, shrimp flatbread, and poutine were so good we would be frequent customers if this restaurant was there. 3.5 stars. A couple of friends and myself were excited to try this place, everyone has been raving about it! It has a very industrial vibe, which is popular right now. It was pretty loud sitting in the center of the restaurant, so we had a difficult time hearing each other to have a normal, relaxed conversation. Very echoey. Our waitress was nice, although not super attentive. The reason we came was for the food, right? So, the food was decent. I had the Midwestern Poutine- interesting flavor combination... I liked it! Both of my friends had ordered meat dishes- chicken & a burger. They agreed that the meat was dry and their sides of a salad and french fries were pretty basic. We visited this restaurant after striking out going to another restaurant located downtown Lagrange as there was a very going on. I immediately knew where to take the family because I had eaten here about a year ago with my mom and friends. Expect a wait for a table on a Friday or Saturday night as ours was 30 minutes or so. Our server was very nice and kept tabs on us through the whole night. She was great! We started off the meal with the waffle bbq fries and they were amazing! So good! For dinner, we got two different burgers, the BBQ Bacon Burger and the Old Forrester Burger =both with delicious fries!) and both of the boys loved them as they decided to share them with each other. I think they liked the BBQ Bacon Burger the best with the Gorgonzalo cheese. I got the Nashville Hot Fried Tenderloin, which was just ok for me. I usually love it when burgers are topped with slaw and French fries but this pork tenderloin with it was not my favorite. I would probably go for a burger next time. It probably didn't help that my mouth was still on fire from the waffle fries that had jalepenos on it! The whole family really enjoyed this place and the decor inside is so cool. Stopped here coming back to Indy from Michigan and was quite surprised. My order was fish and chips, nothing fancy, but what I received showed great attention to detail and high standards. The fish, I believe, was breaded bluegill and I selected the chips over Frys. Both were cooked to perfection - crisp, not oily, freshly cooked and the fish was the tastiest bluegill I've ever had. Quality ingredients and great attention to detail. I will stop again on my next trip. read more

We were a group of three arriving a little after 1 pm for lunch. We didn't have any issue finding a table. One of our party had a walker and we were able to get around fine in the restaurant. We ordered the tenderloin, ham and cheese sandwiches and the fish. All three choices were very good. The Tenderloin sandwich had slices of ham included which were very tasty. The only negative was the noise and difficulty of hearing a conversation. All the walls and floor are hard surfaces which cause a high noisy environment. read more

OK, so I don't usually write a review while I'm still at the restaurant but I couldn't contain myself! Due to rave reviews we decided to have a date night at Destination 814 I LaGrange. Even though the recommendations were stellar we weren't prepared for how outstanding the food and experience would be. We sat at the bar rail as that's our preferred place to sit. It was busy so we would have had a slight wait otherwise at 7 pm on a Tuesday night. Tara was our bartender and so gracious in answering a myriad questions about everything about the menu. She was awesome!! We had an appetizer of grilled chicken tenders and fries - great seasoning on the tenders and fries were stellar. I ordered the Old Forester Burger without the bun - outstanding! Because we didn't know how big the portions would be, we also ordered the Garlic Butter Chicken which was amazing! We have lunch for tomorrow. Add this to the top of your list of "must trys". You will be more pleased than you can imagine. And the icing on the cake is that the prices are super reasonable. Such deliciousness and such a great value! Super win!
