A Tribute to Doctor Lucia Zamorano Neurosurgeon Birmingham Michigan and the Detroit Medical Center…read more My mother is 95 years of age and lives on her own in Ontario Canada. At the beginning of 2014 she began to complain of numbness in her legs when she walked and this quickly advanced to acute pain over the next several months making it painful to walk more than a few steps. A CT Scan which we were able to arrange within a week in Michigan, revealed disc bulges at multiple levels impinging on the nerves causing the pain and inability to walk. The recommended course of action was to try the least invasive approach first that being cortisone shots with fluoroscopy into the afflicted area. We were able to do this within two months thanks to the cooperation of all the good people at the Pain Management Center of Mercy Hospital in Port Huron MI. Unfortunately it was not successful and the time came to identify a neurosurgeon that could and would perform a discectomy on a 95 year old patient. You might wonder why with her having medical coverage in Ontario my mother did not have all of the above procedures performed there at no cost. First despite what anyone says patient care is rationed in Ontario. The government has decided to spend a certain amount of GDP on health care and that's it. The rationing is achieved by "setting priorities" as to who will secure the services first and if you happen to be 95 years old the odds of your rising to the top of the list before you die are remote to none. On a macro basis there is perhaps some logic to the approach but when it's your family, not so much. Unfortunately this is what we have to look forward to in the US under Obamacare. The good news is that there is still Switzerland, Singapore and a number of other good medical centers where you avail yourself of medical care as long as you are willing to pay for it. But I digress as the primary purpose of my writing this is to extoll the virtues of a wonderfully skilled and dedicated neurosurgeon, Doctor Lucia Zamorano of Birmingham Michigan. When you are a doctor and have a 95 year old person with a pacemaker approach you to perform a five hour operation, you have to stop and consider what are the upsides to taking this on compared to the potential risks to reputation and given the litigious nature of our society, risks of a lawsuit in the event something goes wrong. Our torte law needs reform so that we no longer put our doctors in this ethical dilemma. After reviewing the CT scan and having a consulting visit with my mother, Doctor Zamorano did not hesitate to say she thought she could help and would be willing to perform the operation. I must first commend Doctor Zamorano for her compassion. As of this writing it is now three weeks since my mother's five hour operation at the Detroit Medical Center Harper University Hospital where she stayed an outpatient overnight. She is now able to walk pain free about a quarter of a mile using a mobile walker as a security blanket. Prior to the onset of pain at the beginning of the year she had been going to the gym doing a half hour on the bicycle and a half hour with free weights, leg presses etc. Our goal, thanks to the wonderful work of Doctor Zamorano is to get her back in the gym by September. Beyond that however Doctor Zamorano has given her back her mobility, her life and the ability to live in her own home. Doctor Zamorano I salute you as being a compassionate, caring and skilled doctor who I would recommend highly to anyone needing the services of a skilled neurosurgeon. I would also like to thank the wonderful people at DMC both the Administrative staff of the International Division who were very well organized, caring and minimized the bureaucratic process as well as the Anesthesiologist Team who were exceedingly attentive and again willing to take on the risks of dealing with a 95 year old patient. I would encourage any Canadian in need of medical care before they expire or endure untold pain for a long period to contact the International Division of the Detroit Medical Center. Giving Apria 2 stars, which is higher than its 1.5-star average on here …read more.. I started my CPAP journey - and I do mean JOURNEY - in early February 2022. I was having problems sleeping and I did both a home test and overnight test and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea (AHI's of 5.0-8.0). There were two providers who work with Beaumont hospital, Apria and another, and I chose Apria, based on their Madison Heights location (I live in Troy). On May 19, I was hit with a $416 bill from them on my credit card - it was the $315-ish for supplies, which I *was* aware of and knew I hadn't been billed yet, plus $37-45 per month for the machine. I called them to ask for an itemized bill, and they didn't know why May was $45, and February/March/April were $37 - their call center said something like "supplies," but the supplies are all billed separately, so I don't know why. I didn't have a titration study (where I could try on various masks) until 2-3 months into using a CPAP, and Apria will only ship you ONE other mask for free, during the first month of having the CPAP, so that was also a struggle - I chatted with one of their reps and he recommended a nasal pillows mask, which I tried and initially liked, but the blowing output (same deal on the nasal mask, too) was hard to get used to. Apria also has no way to contact them online - you have to call, and if you select Billing, they route you to their call center. I asked them numerous times if my insurance would cover the CPAP supplies and they said they weren't sure, that they had sent the bills to my insurance and hadn't heard back - I called my insurance (BCBS) at that time, and they said they hadn't received anything from them. The only reason I am giving Apria 2 stars instead of 1 is because they do allow you to speak with sleep specialists about the masks, for free, which I took advantage of once. However, the fact that they never gave me any billing information, except for the initial $315 bill (which they didn't charge me until MAY, for some reason, even though we talked about it in February), and the fact that their way to contact them is so poor, warrants a two-star review from me, unfortunately. I've chosen not to continue on my CPAP journey because it's been a major struggle (obviously a personal thing, and not Apria's fault), and I returned the machine to their Madison Heights location on June 8th - hopefully they will not charge me for the month of June, as I was assured on the phone recently, because my billing cycle resets on the 8th of each month. Oh and less than an hour after I returned the machine, I got an automated call from them, asking if I need more supplies. *facepalm* And apparently on June 6, they left me a voicemail reminding me I'm picking up equipment from them tomorrow (June 7) ... Except I was RETURNING equipment, and it was June 8, not 7th.
