My dad's a big soul food fan so I brought him here for lunch. Our server was nice and we were…read moregreeted by other staff as well. We both got the catfish and it was so good. The filets are big and you get two of them plus two sides. I'm an okra fan and the mac & cheese was a good choice too. This was worth the drive to Centerpoint. I want to come back for brunch one day.

The first time I had SKA was in 2020 at an event at The Hangout (now closed). It was a bad…read moreexperience .. the event started late, the food wasn't good, the building had no heat on New Year's Day. Just bad all around. I said never again. Fast forward to this week, 7/2024. It was my turn to pick a place for happy hour. I called SKA last Thursday & asked what time happy hour is? The staff replied "Either 4pm or 5pm until 7pm." I asked her to please find out and I'd wait. In response she asked me what time I planned to come. I told her, 4pm. She responded, "YOU SHOULD BE FINE AROUND THEN." I was baffled and just asked for her name and ended the call ... We went to Courtyard 280 ‍ It just so happened that my friends picked SKA for brunch today, Saturday. I'd resolved that I was going for the company and would put all of my past experiences aside. My food experience had been prior the food truck and brick and mortar. So I was open to giving them a chance. I'm so so glad I did! They refer Saturday brunch as a Day Party. It's on the louder end of the spectrum, which is perfectly appropriate for a day party vibe. There was a DJ ... at some point my friend asked, Are they playing GloRilla?!? lol! I'm a fan so it was fine. Our waiter had great energy and he was attentive. The decor is nice. We ordered the mimosa flight. They were good, 4 flavors - strawberry, mango, blueberry, peach - not too sweet. I ordered shrimp and grits. The grits were thick (that's how I like them) and well seasoned. The shrimp was plentiful! was not over cooked at all. There was shrimp in most every bite. I'd recommend this. My friend ordered the fried catfish and grits and said she enjoyed it. The biscuit tasted canned - it wasn't needed though. This was a nice experience!

I found the Off The Hook food truck today in the Riverchase office park in Hoover. Their signature…read moredish is called Rocket Shrimp, and I love it. A large portion of fried shrimp are tossed in Rocket sauce. The sauce is creamy and has a sweet and spicy flavor. It is similar to the Bang Bang Shrimp at Bonefish Grill, but still unique. The Rocket Shrimp can be ordered by itself, or in a taco, po-boy, or Reuben. The Reuben option sounds very interesting, and especially if you like rye bread and sauerkraut. I decided to try the Pow Pow shrimp today. The cashier said it was an Asian ginger sauce, and his favorite. The sauce was unique, it was sweet at first and then the soy sauce flavor takes over. The soy was a bit strong and there was a slight vinegar taste on the back end. I liked it, but I prefer the Rocket sauce. I ordered the kettle chips as my side, and that is a good option. Food trucks are cool, and you should definitely give Off The Hook a try.

Food trucks in Birmingham are like pizza places in New York, they all have legendary reputations, but some aren't and some really are. This one falls into the latter category. I had a look at a good variety of what they were offering as there was quite a crowd, so I got a sneak peek at the selection as people were coming and going with thier food. The seafood looked and smelled amazing. Basically like a fish fry in a truck. Everyone seemed very pleased. I ordered the beef sliders, fries, sweet tea and banana pudding. All were outstanding. Well seasoned beef patties, perfectly toasted buns, some bleu cheese crumbles, a little special sauce...the whole meal was delicious. Fries weren't soggy or too salty, and the banana pudding was so good that I finished the whole thing. I have a feeling I'm going to end up taking a nap this afternoon. Overall just a well priced, well prepared, delicious, convenient meal. Couldn't ask for more.
