Great venue for a comedy show. I went on Friday night to Brad Williams. Tickets were easy to buy online ($36) and I just showed my mobile ticket entry. There are parking garages nearby- I walked. There are metal detectors as you enter. Security watches you go through and bam -you're at the bar! I got a local beer ($12) and headed for the stairs. Apparently there is an elevator for those who cannot or do not want to take the stairs. People were filing in. I heard the bell to take your seat so I hustled all the way to the top. I had a seat in the very last row- row L. L for Last lol. Seat 24 so kinda in the middle. I would say I could see the stage without anyone blocking my view. It's steep up there. There were ushers on each level, assisting people to their seats. Those nosebleed seats did not have beer holders. Oh well. The sound was good- I heard everything. The seat was comfortable. After the show i used the restroom- plenty of stalls- no line, clean, easy signage to tell you where it is. Exiting was easy. So I'd say this is an easy in and out experience. I was comfortable. I could see and hear everything. No big TVs so you really need good vision. They don't take your phone away. Not a bad Friday night. read more

DeVos Performance Hall is a good venue for a musical, ballet, symphony performance, etc. I've been going to shows at DeVos since I was a little kid - my mom and I used to go to The Nutcracker every year, so it has a lot of memories for me. The hall itself is large and every seat I've been in has a decent view, even the upper balconies. As Broadway Grand Rapids season ticket holders, Nate and I have been to DeVos Performance Hall many times over the past few years! The construction in the lobby seems to be mostly done. They expanded the women's restroom area, which was smart and helpful to cut down on lines at intermission. You can purchase beverages (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) before the show and during intermission, and new for the 2022-2023 season, they have lids so you can bring your beverages in to the auditorium now. You can also get candy. Prices aren't cheap and you usually only get 10-15 minutes to drink your beverage during intermission, so I rarely buy drinks here. They do have two bars and a couple of bar stands now. They take credit cards for purchases at the two main bars, I believe the two smaller stands are cash only. There are currently no COVID protocols in place for entry as of October 2022. They are pretty strict on their bag policy; I saw someone being turned away to put their purse in their car at the show last night. According to their website, DeVos Performance Hall "does not permit bags larger than 12" x 9" x 3", other than those required for medical or parenting needs. All bags will be screened by security personnel. Policy is subject to change based on event policy." One complaint I've had in the past is that it tends to get super warm in the auditorium, but at last night's performance I was comfortable so maybe they've dialed in the temperature controls a bit. Parking is convenient and abundant around this location, so it's usually not difficult to find a place if you get downtown early enough. This is a large venue with a ton of moving parts. When we arrived before we even entered the building their was an employee outside directing the crowd into the building. When he put eyes on us he escorted us to the side entrance where the metal doctors were. We put our purses on the belt and walked though. I was wearing a heated vest so the machines went off and I they broke out the security wand to make sure it wasn't something else and I appreciated that. The tickets were electronic so I brought them up on my phone and they were scanned to gain access. The crowd was a mix of dressed up and casual attire. I enjoyed that we arrived around 6:45pm and the show started at 7:00pm. We had enough time to get a fun Broadway picture with props. A volunteer was assisting and I thought that was a nice touch to the event. There was a merch table where I picked up a Christmas ornament for $25.00, then onto the dreaded alcohol line. Again getting there a little early allowed us to get in line early but still a line. Looking around there were two other drink line happening with two bartenders at each station so in their defense they were trying to hussle. We waited about 10 minutes but the line did continue to grow so I can only imagine how long the others had to wait. I ordered two long island ice teas price came to $30.00 with tip. My friend ordered two double shots of vodka with water and it was $60.00 without tip. Your options to get to your seats are by stairs or elevator. We took the stairs. Our seats were balcony F so it was four flights up. The levels are marked well and there are a ton of employees around willing to help. I accidentally kept trying to go into mezzanine section lolol. I like balcony seating but would suggest row A instead of row F. F was fine but A I thought would have been better for me. I had forgotten how small theater seats are and carrying jackets, drinks and the playbill was a lot. I would have really liked to have had a locker to check my personal items in but didn't see any and didn't ask unfortunately. Another thing is I never know where to sit in the theater. At the end so you can get out fast or in the middle where you do have a great view but the chances of you getting out without disrupting everyone is slim. Our seats were 5 and 6. Right close to the end so we had to get up every time someone needed in or out. While holding your coat, purse, drink, and playbill. It was a lot. The acoustics were amazing. We could hear everything and I could see the actors. When intermission came you get 15 minutes to break for the restroom, drinks, leg stretch, whatever. No WAY is that enough time to do anything with the amount of people in that venue. So for the 2nd half of the show the doors kept opening for those who couldn't get done in 15 minutes. That interruption lasted for around 10 minutes. So when the show was over the house lights came on and we headed for the exit. There were a lot of people and the crowds were respectful of each other so we all got out timely. Overall great experience at the theater. read more

Went to see the Grand Rapids Broadway show of Hadestown at Devos Hall. Great performance! I wish that they had more bartenders for drinks before the show because they only have one person running the cash register and pouring a drink at the same time so it goes very slow and sometimes line is so long, that you do not have time to wait to get a drink so if you'd like to have a drink before would you can now bring inside show up early! read more

I went to watch Dear Even Hansen in May, and it was great. I sat in the Mezzaine area and it was close and far enough to be able to see the people's expression, but also see how the background changed for each scene and interacted with the plot. It was my very first time attending a musical at DeVos and loved it so so much. I'd definitely come to see a perfrormance any time. As the main non-sporting event space in town, it fulfills its purpose very well. Lots of parking nearby, including a connected underground lot that allows you to bypass any inclement weather outside-- a must for winter. Friendly staff, well-maintained facilities. The acoustics are overall very good, and seating in the orchestra, loge, and mezzanine provide a decent view. God help you if you end up in the balcony. Overall, a very good selection of performances from Broadway GR, Opera GR, GR Symphony, and GR Ballet, to touring musicians; I even saw Alton Brown do his culinary stage show there. Ticket prices are all over the place, sometimes I am skeptical of how pricey the crappiest seats in the house are, let alone the premier tier. read more

This place seems like it was decorated in the 90's and left for dead. We came to see two broadway shows so far, and both times they began the evening with a commercial or two for local sponsors. Between that and the overstuffed advertising in the playbill you feel like you are about to also be sold a time share. It just feels cheap and tacky. So... I went here to watch the Cinderella ballet, and the ballet was amazing!! Loved the ballet... but was very disappointed with the DeVos Performance Hall. -In my opinion, their COVID protocol is too strict. People still have to wear masks even though you show a COVID vaccine card or a negative test. This just irritates me enough that I won't be attending another performance at DeVos until their mask policy is lifted. -Their purse sizing policy is absolutely ridiculous. Your purse has to be a certain size, or you can't bring it in. My purse was LITERALLY less than an inch over their sizing protocol, and they made me walk back to my car (IN THE FREEZING WEATHER). Multiple women were getting turned away for the exact same reason. They don't even check your bags to see what's inside!!!!!!! -My friend and I got box seats for the ballet, and the chairs in the box seats were horrendous. They were so uncomfortable. My butt was literally numb from sitting in them. For paying so much for box seats, you'd think they could invest in some comfier chairs. Overall, not impressed with DeVos. We were here visiting for the Art Prize this past weekend, and this location is regularly a venue with many art displays. Due to the space in this location, you can walk and see them all across all the pathway on the second floor, which you can access through electric stairway or elevator. The only consideration is that I recommend walking all the way to the west side, take the elevator to the 2nd floor, and then walk from the west to the east side. Then you will end up in the pathway that will take you to the Amway hotel, or simply take the electric stairway downstairs and exit the venue. They sell drinks, snacks and food as well here! read more

Nice venue. Any seat you get here will have a great view. Downfall for me would be the way the seating is set up. On the main floor there are just long rows of about 60 seats. If youre in a good seat, in the middle, you have to crawl over 30 people to get there. Felt very unsafe if there was a fire or need to evacuate, having to wait for this long line of people to get out of the way. A better set up would seem to be to split the row and put a main aisle down the middle. *TIP: at intermission everyone runs to the restroom on the 1st floor and line is LONG. 3rd floor upper left corner bathroom was nearly empty. Sneak off to there and be in & out while everyone else is waiting. read more

Went to see the symphony at Devos Place. They didn't inform us we needed a mask until we arrived, not a big issue but would not have chosen this event had I known prior. Then they would not let my wife bring in her purse. It's not even that big. Where are we???? Avoid this place at all costs. It's an absolute joke. read more

Love the architecture of this space. It's huge, wide open, and very well organized. If you're staying at the Amway Grand Plaza, this space is just a skywalk away. Devos is within walking distance of a majority of Grand Rapids attractions whether it's dining or entertainment. There are a few options for parking. We decided to utilize the parking below the space. For this weekend it was only $10, the cheapest I'd heard in that area. The ballrooms are gorgeous-very high ceilings. We were in this space for a volleyball tournament and it was large enough to fit dozens of teams/courts. read more

Absolutely the worst experience. We'd bought tickets in 2020 for the last couple of Harry Potter films. Of course 2020 being what it was the show was postponed. Fast forward to this weekend. The show was great, but the staff was awful. There is no information on their website about security and I was not expecting to be girded like cattle through a check point even before showing my ticket. They force you to hustle through security and tell you that an average sized handbag is too large. You can't bring it. They make you go through a terrible, unprofessional security check point. Seriously, TSA is easier, friendlier and faster. The staff was rude, inconsiderate, and completely ignored ADA accommodation. Terrible, terrible. Be warned. Will not return. read more

The Devos Performance Hall is very nice, but their parking situation is so bad. We went to see a show in August and the sign in front of their parking area (basement of the Performance Hall) stated $10 event parking. We pulled in, grabbed our parking ticket and parked. It wasn't until we came out to exit the building after the show, when getting to the cashier, she said it was $25. I tried explaining about the sign out front, but she wasn't changing anything and I didn't feel like holding up the line for everyone. I did send Devos an e-mail, but that ended up going nowhere. We have sat in just about every spot you can sit in this venue, it is top notch. They've hosted everything from The Nutcracker to Marilyn Manson and they do an awesome job every time. My family, plus some extended family attended an event here yesterday afternoon. Riverdance, 20 years. Now, our extended family had seen the original, and it was their favorite, but I believe they still had a good time. It was our first visit to this venue, the seats were pretty comfortable. There are three levels, we sat in the mezzanine. The view is pretty decent from the mezzanine, we were in row j. I got to sit in one of the stand alone balcony seats for the first half as I entered just as the performance began. Parking was relatively easy and painless. We parked across the way at the 5/3rd lot, just don't be in a hurry to exit. Leaving the parking structure was a fustercluck. But, as it happens we narrowly missed a crash just after our on-ramp on 196 W, so we didn't mind that we had to take our time heading home. Cheers! read more

Came to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Pt. 1, Live in Concert and was fairly excited. Leaving upset, frustrated and angry. Security was rude and unprofessional. There was NO adequate communication regarding purse size (seriously?! A CLUTCH?? Female patrons be warned!) and we were treated disrespectfully because we didn't know the size requirements ahead of time. I've always enjoyed these shows - and thankfully the film and orchestra were superb - but I'm disappointed and this experience will affect my purchasing future tickets. If I hadn't bought these tickets 3 years ago when they originally went on sale and had instead bought them now, I would be even more upset and would not return for tomorrow's show. I do not feel I got my money's worth from the experience. And one more thing: where were the souvenirs??? I'm incredibly disappointed and will be exploring options for future entertainment. read more

If I could give the venue and event staff negative stars I would. Our nieces fiancé was in an opera here. Twelve of us traveled from Ohio for the performance, staying overnight and fueling Grand Rapids economy to the tune of over $600 per couple. After dinner we got to the opera where I was denied entry because my purse was too big. They didn't even bother to X-ray it or anything. We we told walk it back to car ir no entry. I have a handicapped plate and no meniscus in either knee so doing so would prevent us from coming back. Out $100 cost of opera tickets, no reason we would have needed hotel or to board our dogs if we knew we couldn't see opera. Devos staff was rude-"info was online", to which we had no access as tickets were purchased for us and we repaid our host- and continued being rude to the remainder of our party - inc dirty looks, comments about trying to bring leftovers from dinner into venue, and disgust when asked where restrooms were-sign says they're over there. I will not EVER be back to the DeVos and will make sure everyone who know me knows how rude the staff is! read more

Yes, I am a fan. I really enjoy seeing shows here - from concerts, to symphonies, to Opera I have enjoyed every show I have seen here. Tickets are a bit pricey to some events but in general I have found good deals on the shows I want to see. If you stop in and buy the tickets here you just pay face value, no extra fees! Attended the Nutcracker and the show was lovely. We had seats in row F orchestra fantastic seats even for small children. Plan on eating before the snacks are less than palatable upside you can bring your wine into your seats. Warning it must be a Grand Rapids thing the humans do not stand to allow you to maneuver to your seat my row was full of very large humans that either were unable to stand or have never been taught manners. Will avoid this venue in the future. For a more modern facitlity, it really lacks on a lot of basics that would have made this facility a lot better. First, there are a lack of ushers to help you . A little better signage may have helped. Cramped, chopped up lobby. You enter from the outside and then you enter another room which has several dividers to go to different areas. They try to spruce it up with a fake marquee sign, but it just adds to the cheapness of the entire place. One elevator per side to get to the cheap nosebleed seats, which meant long lines. Very narrow isles and very steep height for the balcony. Would not want to be afraid of heights... One good thing-great acoustics. But, if you are in the cheap seats you need it because you can't see the faces of the performers. THE WORST THING IS THE RESTROOMS! ONLY 3 STALLS IN THE LADIES ROOM ON THE BALCONY AND THE MENS HAD 4. THIS MEANT A LOT OF PEOPLE MISSED THE FIRST PART OF THE SECOND ACT BECAUSE OF THE UNNECESSARY LONG LINES. I will be more apt to go to Kalamazoo Miller Auditorium or Lansing than DeVos..... to spend money for pricey tickets in a less than desireable venue read more

I call it 'The Wave Building' to out of towners or people not familar with downtown. Its a beautiful addition to Grand Rapids skyline because it does remind you or a wave next to the river. read more
