Eager to get out of the house and try something different, I headed over to the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival recently. I love local festivals and figured this one would be worth checking out. Be prepared to walk a few blocks or else pay $5 or more for parking. The $5 was being called a "donation" but the organization soliciting them wouldn't let you park without paying that amount. The last time I checked, that was called a fee. I guess now I can say "Been there, done that." It was mostly booths from religious organizations or selling the type of knickknacks you might find at the state fair. After making a trip around the festival area and not finding anything too interesting, I decided to head up to Depot Town and grab a bite. I'll upvote it a star because admission is free. Next year, I'll skip the festival and head straight to dinner.

It wasn't all bad, but it was far from what I would call a good festival. The best part was the live music. That was great. There were also lots of awesome causes and charities that I hope did great. Some of the tents were really interesting. Some exotic birds, old motors, and various food to try. What made it lame for the most part was the various political agenda tents and religious agenda tents. I'm not going to a festival to have someone cram some political or religious affiliation, down my throat. It wasn't just a few. There were a lot. And maybe even a worse of an offense was the cheese and checkers "expert". Dude was just sitting in the middle, letting everyone just sit at the tables to eat, while he read a book. I wanted to throw down, and take that title. I guess it wasn't meant to be. I'm not sure if there are in the later portion of the day, but there were no drinking tents in the afternoon. It's alright to kill an hour or two, but this festival is nothing to special to remember.

I was able to visit several times with friends, and we always ended up wandering to the "Top of the Park" where we would away to upbeat music and enjoy some delicious food. Everyone seems to congregate here, so it's not uncommon to bump into other friends and see your party grow as the night wears on. We would find ourselves talking, eating, dancing, and laughing late into the night and after the stars had already appeared on more than one occasion. I was sad that the festival wasn't longer but am already looking forward to next year and more summer nights under the stars at the top of the park!

I think I saw about 10,000 white people at this festival. And about 1 black person. Yes, 1. And about very few, if any, Hispanics, and about zero Asians. But hey. It is what it is. Other than the racial demographics, it is a lovely Festival in one of my favorite neighbourhoods of Michigan. Some of the best pizza slices in the world are in these parts and if you wander the Allen Park Street fair you will find lots of cool stands and coolinary (intentional mis-spelling) delights. And a lot of the stores along this area will sell stuff outside the front of their stores. Just a great Festival although - as I said - you will notice there is very very little ethnic diversity.

Always includes the annual Hall of Fame inductions, a 5k run and many other activities. I've been going for several years now and it just seems to keep growing.

Two words: Demolition. Derby…read more Old, painted, beat up cars crash into each other in a mud pit for prize money and your amusement. Oh, there's also a fair with a few rides and carnival food but the real star is the derby. I went for the first time tonight and now I'm absolutely hooked. When the fair is in town it's a must. Get a funnel cake and pull up a piece of bleacher and watch some cars get smashed!

Food options are also super limited; it's a few food trucks with local businesses selling overpriced iterations of some of their fare. A couple of happy hour spots I like in town shut their discounts down for the weekend. Most art is unexceptional. I really don't feel like anything is worth purchasing but it is fun to browse. With that said. It was fun to see the variety of works on offer. The La Croix booth (free la Croix seltzers) and pickle booths ($8 for a small, $11 for a large), were some of the most popular stands I saw. Perhaps there could be more of a consumable stand next year.

AA Art Fair is one of the best events of the year in AA and definitely one I look forward to every…read moresingle year! My challenge to myself each year is to visit every nook and cranny of art fair because it is EXPANSIVE! My strategy is to go more than one day (obviously a little difficult to do if you're coming into town for this each time, but still completely worth it) so that I can spend at least one day looking at everything, MARINATE on it all, and then come back another day in the same weekend to buy everything in a less impulse-centric way! The AA Art Fair goes on for a whole weekend in July each summer, normally ranging from Thursday to Sunday! There are well over 1,000 vendors to look at and it basically spans across many of the streets throughout all of Ann Arbor (Main, Liberty, State, South U, East U, University, Washington, and more!). It's not only Michigan's, but the WHOLE NATION'S, largest JURIED art fair and it worth checking out a thousand times over! I've been checking out the art fair basically every year since 2010 and I've loved to see how it has evolved over the years! Obviously there are some vendors that keep coming back and that I have gotten to know over the years, but there's also so many new and incredible vendors that show up from year to year just waiting to be discovered and it's absolutely the funnest thing ever! The only downside to the art fair is how HOT it can be given that it takes place at the peak of Michigan summer, so take precautions with sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and PLENTY of water breaks and/or duck into shops throughout AA for brief respite as needed! It's wonderful because there are also tons of the AA storefronts that you can check out during art fair as well because they'll put on massive deals knowing that art fair is going on! AA Art Fair is truly the best! I hope everyone gets to check it out at some point in their lives and am eagerly looking forward to next July's art fair again!

The St. Anne sausage festival is one of the best church festivals in Southeast Michigan. Thousands…read moreof people show up to sample the sausage kitchens and the amazing beer tent. They have plenty of carnival rides and games to keep the kids busy while you wander through the rest of the festival. They have a silent auction which has many items of interest. This year they added a twist by making the auction online. I think it was a hit. The festival is usually the third weekend in September. Put it down on the calendar, it's a great time!
