The easiest way to get me into an Indian restaurant I've been meaning to visit: tell me they serve dosa and I'll be there within 24 hours. And that, my friends, is the story of how I finally made it to Dhaba Express for the first time. I made a specific trip for lunch on Sunday given that it's the only day of the week that they serve these South Indian crepes stuffed with Masala goodness. I've fallen in love with dosa on the west coast and Dhaba's definitely held up to my past experiences. I actually found the crepe portion even tastier than the ones I've had before! At $6.50 a pop with two dips included (spicy stewed veggies and a coconutty blend), it's a bargain but notably smaller than most other dosas I've had elsewhere. But that's okay- all the more reason to order something else to go along with it, right? So that's what we did. I strong-armed Shannon K into ordering a South Indian combination plate off their brunch menu to share post-dosa. Not that it took a whole lot of convincing. Our tray came out with cute sections keeping all the goodness separated for your own mixing pleasure. For about $11, we got a shareable serving of tomato-infused daal, Eggplant curry (I think), paneer korma, chickpea salad, basmati rice, and naan - so basically anything you'd ever want. We each got nice servings out of it and there's still some to spare in the fridge. The only thing is it doesn't come with a whole lot of naan so you might want to order more. I'm looking forward to getting back in for a go at their dinner menu especially after chatting with the server a bit. She mentioned that they try to make it easy for folks to try all sorts of different dishes without having to order full servings of each. Instead of ordering full $12 for each item, you can add on side-servings for something like $3/each. Goodbye hefty bills and awkward negotiations with your dining companions! After all was said and done, we split the bill and paid a lovely $13.80 (plus tip) each. Service was perfectly pleasant and the space itself is way nicer than you'd expect of any spot with 'Express' in the title. I was expecting at takeout joint and was very happy with the bistro feel for dining-in. I'll be back!

Buffet. Excuse the messyness.... it was yummy.

Came here for the buffet. I've only had indian food like 3 times. Plenty of flavor, food tastes great. Spicy depending on what you get but that's expected from an indian restaurant. It was a bit pricey though but probably worth it all things considered. The bread is realllllllllllly good. Like it's the best part. Service was a little lacking, there was one waitress who was also working the front cash and dealing with the phone/takeouts, but at least she was friendly. -1 service

A very tasty meal that was large enough for us to share. Forgot to take a photo until half done but would definitely return.

I had some errands near Bayer's lake. Last time I was here it was terrible experience. But we thought to give it a try. And this time we didn't have any complaints. The moment we entered the restaurant it was fully occupied and I could smell all of the spices, flavour goodness. That's how I started to hope for a better experience today. Everything was just so amazing. The food, quality, authenticity, price, cutlery, presentation and staff. Being an Indian myself the food here is very similar to that back home. Full of flavours. Also we had to pack food as we couldn't finish it and they were kind enough to pack it. The dessert made my day. Fresh, delicious, mouth watering food. To my surprise a VERY good experience. I plan to go over the weekend sometime for buffet. I will surely go back there. :)

Service was BUSY... there was 2 servers for the whole place on a busy tuesdsy night. Took about an hour for mains which was ok because we had starters. Papadams and the chickpea fritters which were the pakoras... Then the main was 2 vindaloos, 2 saffron infused rice and 2 naan. All delicious, hot, spicy and filling. The gals did a great job with what they had to work with. . Which was one another with a full dining room. Well done gals!!!

Food was delivered by Door Dash so take the delivery with a grain of salt. The food arrived and was a good portion for the two of us to eat. Chicken korma had a really nice flavour. Sauce was nice and thick, chicken pieces were very large. Butter chicken was good, not great. Didn't find it had as much flavour as others we've tried, but for some it may be perfectly fine. Our mistake was not realizing that these two dishes didn't have anything other than the chicken in them - so make sure you read the descriptions if you want to ensure that you get veggies. Last thing, which is more probably an issue with Door Dash, is that we didn't get any utensils with the food - but we made do in the hotel. Overall will try again another time we are in town and choose some of their other many options.

The paneer tikka taste wise was good, however the food color in paneer could have been avoided, there were five chunks of paneer, good size but no capsicum or onion just one of each for five pieces of paneer. No green chutney just a small tiny yogurt dip, again the taste was good but the experience could be improved by adding few more onions and capsicum on the skewer and chutney. Matar paneer was good too, amritsari kulcha was huge bigger than the plate itself, was tasty too. We had it at room temperature after an hour when it was packed so May be that's why it turned a bit chewy but otherwise taste was nice

YiLan Halal Chinese Restaurant - Xinjiang wide, hand-pulled noodles

Since moving back to Halifax in late 2024, I've heard nothing but good things about Yilan, and one…read moreday at work I finally made the short walk to pickup some takeout for lunch. I opted for the Xinjiang wide, hand-pulled noodles, with beef as the protein. If a place is doing hand-made noodles, ya gotta try them! My order was ready quite quickly and on time. Taking my hefty container back to the office, I sat down at my desk and tried to move things out of the immediate noodle-splatter-zone. Unsurprisingly, given the area of origin (and the more descriptively-labeled, in-house menu vs Uber Eats where I ordered) cumin features very prominently in the dish. I also appreciated the broader assortment of ingredients, with tomato and garlic scapes showing up, in addition to more familiar sights like onion and cabbage. A side cup of chili crisp let's you amp up the spice level to your own taste, although I suspect that there's a little heat to begin with as well. The noodles themselves were excellent. A good thickness, with a pleasant chew and a rough texture that held the sauce well, there was nothing to not like here! The beef was a bit on the over-cooked side, but being in a takeout container for ten minutes or more isn't optimal for any food. It was a big container, so I opted to keep a small portion for lunch the next day, rather than completely ruin my afternoon energy levels by having the whole thing. My text time there had me coming by with my wife, and my aunt and one of her friends, which allowed for a much larger spread of food to sample. We started off the meal with the cucumber salad and an order of pan-fried chicken and mushroom dumplings. The crunchy chunks of cucumber had a nice punch of garlic and sesame flavour, and would help balance out later dishes that packed a spicy hit. The dumplings had pleasantly pliable wrappers with nice browning, and the juicy chicken and earthy wood ear mushrooms made for a tasty filling. For our mains, we went with the beef and garlic scapes, the lamb and green onion, as well as the dry-fried green beans. Naturally, steamed rice would be the blank canvas for all of this good stuff. Yilan's menu is fully halal and leans into the owner's Uyghur origins, which is not only a great culinary option for local Muslims, but results in some very unique offerings. The beef and garlic scapes was certainly one of those dishes, one that I haven't seen anywhere else in the city. Given my wife's dietary restrictions, it was also a pleasant surprise. The crispy pieces of garlic scapes were potently garlicky but with their own vegetal brightness, and they played well against the tender slices of beef. Pieces of wood ear mushrooms and dried chili peppers added further savouriness and bursts of heat, if you choose to go down that fiery red path. The lamb with green onions was the milder of the lamb options on the menu, with the familiar cumin lamb as the other. The lamb was wonderfully tender, and very mild in flavour - if you're not a fan of lamb's bolder meatiness in other preparations, this is the lamb dish for you. Slices of green onion brought a little green and crunch to the dish, but the lamb was certainly the star. The dry-fried green beans got the Sichuan treatment as they were absolutely swimming in a massive pile of Sichuan peppercorns and pieces of dried chilies. The numbing peppercorns and spicy peppers added big flavour to an otherwise benign dish, and there was an impressive amount of both peppercorns and peppers left on the plate after we scooped the leftovers in containers to take home. Yilan isn't just a big fish in a small pond; whether you're looking for a halal meal or just really good Chinese food, they're doing an impressively fantastic job while they add to the depth of Halifax's food scene.

I've checked a few of these places off my "To Eat At" list, and when looking for some easy takeout after a long day, I took the opportunity to strike another name through. Tanoor is an interesting mix of Syrian and Yemeni cuisine, reminding me of the many East Asian restaurants that put multiple countries' food on their menu to expand their business' appeal. Shawarma features prominently, with both chicken and beef, as well as different regional variations including the Canadian-ized version with more vegetables, and the more traditional version of just meat, garlic sauce and pickles. On the Yemeni side of the menu, one of the country's most famous dishes is the star - mandi. Traditionally, this would be prepared by cooking the meat above a pot of rice in a tandoor/tannur/tanoor, and since it forms the basis of Tanoor's name, I'm going to assume that's how they do it here as well. For our order, I went with a whole chicken mandi, which includes rice and zahawig hot sauce, and I tacked on an order of tabbouli to add some green to the meal. It was ready for pickup in quick order, just 15 minutes later. The mandi was an impressive sight as takeout, although I'm sure it's even better when plated for dine-in. A red-hued, spatchcocked chicken lay atop a huge mound of warmly-coloured rice, which had seen some saffron and other seasonings itself. The container is one of those large rectangular aluminum trays you see at pot lucks and the like, so this was a LOT of rice. After serving up the plates, we eagerly dug in. The chicken skin lost its crispness while wrapped for takeout, but it and the meat had a warm, earthy flavour profile not dissimilar from Indian tandoori chicken that we're more familiar with. The ultra-tender (and admittedly a bit overcooked) meat fell off the bones. The rice had its own complementary flavours from the saffron and the cardamom seeds that dotted the dish, while the tangy zahawig brought contrast and a hint of spiciness to our meal. I found Tanoor's tabbouli to be more lemon-forward than most that I've had, with a layer of sweetness to balance out the acidity of the lemon juice. Not a wild departure from a well-known dish, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I may not be out in the Bedford area very often, but Tanoor and many of its neighbours have added a lot to the area's food scene that would have been hard to imagine not that long ago.
