Goncalo even escorted us into the airport, got us into the VIP line (which we weren't booked in) and stayed with us until our last bag was taken and we walked to security. The tram ride from one end to the other takes 2:40 and climbs one of the steepest slopes in the city. It opened for passengers in 1892. What's interesting about this ride is that it is not an independent track. The path where the train rides is also open to vehicles and pedestrians. It is considered one of the most picturesque streets in Lisbon, if not Europe. The Elevador is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. If you've bought a 24 hour pass, you can scan your Viagem card and it's included. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a ticket from the driver onboard - he takes cash. The yellow funicular is the most popular one in Lisbon because of the steep hills. Unfortunately, it wasn't running when we came by on a Saturday at around 2:30. Maybe it only runs on weekdays? Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. You never know when it may be randomly closed.

If you're looking for it, you'd never realize that it is a train station as it's in a beautiful…read morebuilding and is NOT labeled as such on the front. I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

Bonus for me, the station has a few dozen luggage lockers. Easy to operate and now I don't have to bring my roll aboard suitcase with me all day today! Trains to Sintra are every half hour or so and they take about 40 minutes to get to the destination. The station has a couple of vending machines and a small coffee shop while you wait for your train. Automated ticket vending machines are in Portuguese and English, accepting coins, notes and cards. I was able to quickly purchase my round trip ticket. A quick swipe at the turnstile and I boarded. A couple of points off because the lockers only accept coins and not notes. The cashier at the ticketing window not only would not make change, she would not even tell me where I could get change. (There's a ginginja shop at the bottom of the stairs and I bought a quick shot for €1.45 so now I have change.) If there is direct access to the Rossio metro station, they need to improve their signage. Since we have been to Lisbon, Portugal many times, we decided to take a local train to Cascais. What a beautiful city. Ambiance - Local train, not good or bad. Not busy. Not clean, but also not dirty. On time. Service - Had a hard time trying to buy our tickets as the machines were NOT in English. And we struggled using Google Translate while underground. The people around us were too busy to help us. Finally, we went to the cafe to ask for help. The owner sold us a one day pass rather than a round trip pass... Since we had the more expensive pass (double the price rather than round trip tickets), we decided to make an extra stop at Belem to get our $$ worth. Then when we got back, we found these two tourist girls also struggling to buy their train tickets, so we gave them ours as we were trying to pay it forward. Glad the tickets can get more use. I do not think they were trying to rip us off, but there was a language barrier. We appreciated the help. Price - Bought a one day pass. I think we paid approximately $8 US for each ticket. 40 minutes or less from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré, this is the end (or the beginning) of the line. As…read moreterminal railway stations go, it's perfectly OK. There are multiple tracks and you might need to ask someone which is the next train to depart. Or you can just follow everyone who is boarding one or the other. If you miss it, there's another in 30 minutes (off peak) or 12 minutes (peak). But before that, you will need to purchase a ticket to scan at the turnstile. The machine has an "English" button and accepts cards, notes and coins. One-way fare is €2,30 and you should expect a conductor on board checking tickets. It is easy to find your way to the bus stop from here as there are signs and a tunnel. The 403 bus stops here for the ride to Cabo da Roca. Head out and to the left, stay on the sidewalk and follow the coastline to the Cidadela de Cascais or the Farol de Santa Marta. Beyond those, it is a 1.5 km walk to the Boca do Inferno but it's mostly smooth and handicapped accessible. Or you can wait for the M27 bus that goes the long way. The station has some snack shops and quick restaurants but you're also right into downtown, so there is much more nearby including all the tourist shops you can imagine.
