The issue I have is with the Billing Department (the whole Internal and Refund). I had a sinus procedure done back in March 2025, was over charged according to my insurance. I've been trying to get my refund resolved, now close to a year. Been getting the run around (case is pending, case is in Escalation Department, waiting on Harlingen Office for information, will send another high priority request, pending, pending, next week should have an answer, sending another high priority request, case pending). Ive been trying to talk with someone in Internal Billing (supervisor) as of yet no response. If it was least then $20.00, I say they need it more then me but this is $420.00 of MINE MONEY. I went to DHR rehabilitation for a broken femur. I have never been treated better in a hospital/rehab. They encourage you mentally and physically to get moving. The atmosphere is totally positive. Sal the recreation therapist makes sure you are involved with all activities. They make sure you can do most things you need to do at home. The staff stayed in touch with my daughter, who lives 1300 miles away, so wel that I'd start to tell her something and she already knew. Great communication. I highly recommend this place for anyone who needs to get strong after their injury or whatever. I saw some miracles happen while I was in there. This place is truly amazing. My therapist was Brian, I asked him so many questions and he answered everyone of them and would show me pictures to go along with them. He nevered got annoyed with me, he made me want to push myself. So thank you Brian and Sal, also to my neighbor who said go to DHR in Edinburg. She saved my life, and I'm walking. I have called to ask that they correct it since 2022, but still in 2025 no change. The looping script (VERY ANNOYING) IS INCESSANT without soft music for peaceful interlude...but worst of all, the non EXISTENT word "REKNOWN" is used over and over again! What can i say aside of MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT?? If this truly the best here in valley then holy moly do we have a problem. The nursing staff need to do quarterly training on hospitality and service. Majority of nurses here gossiped about personal topics like there was no tomorrow. This was noted in the pre-surgery prepping area, ICU and out into the non emergency rooms. By the way it apparently takes like 4 hours to book a room for a patient. Not one nurse told me I would be waiting all day. So here is my full experience. Had to be at hospital at 5am, checked in and was in prepping room for surgery in 15 mins, so far so good u til we had to wait until 7:30 until finally beginning surgery. Wheeled off past surgery doors at 7:40am. What was supposed to be a 3 hour surgery turned into a whole day thing. Finally finished surgery at around 3pm and got an ICU room at 7:30pm.. The nurses switching shifts between day and night rarely say hello and just go about their work like no one else exist, but when they leave the room they love talking their ears and getting lost in personal conversations, very noisy for ICU!! Also some guys don't really know how to handle women and put on support items very awkwardly and as such leave patient feeling physically uncomfortable because the support item is placed all wrong and patient cannot adjust item.. like dudes that is not how you put on a bra, skin got cinched with bands and left welts/bruising on skin from things being pinched! Nurses took too long to arrive after being called. Up to 15 minutes and do not cone back to check on patient after saying they would. Needed assistance with bathroom and nurse left though she said she would be right outside. Gone for like two hours! The food was terrible, it tasted like the smell of dog food and nutritionist didnt even read notes about liquid diet and served minced meat that would be spat right back out because throat closed.. RIP. The hospital is freezing and sometimes nurses come to check on tubing and forget to completely cover with blanket.. just little things overlooked and it pretty annoying as I'm sure if it were their own family member they would give their all. Not enough parking.. need to build a parking garage seriously..! Overall disorganized and nurses need to have better communication, so they wont have to promise patients different things and turn up empty at all ends. Wish that there is more training for them, maybe can go to training school quarterly?? read more

Long wait, incompetent people, shady billing. If this is the BEST hospital in Rio Grand Valley, I don't want to see the worse!!! In one of my Dr. Visits, I was charged $325 for the use of the facility (for sitting and waiting 2 hrs to see physician) I was called on the day of my surgery 1 hr before surgery to let me know of when the surgery was to take place. Another, I waited 4 hrs for a 2:00pm surgery. It was 3:00pm and I was not even in pre-op. Had a "rapid covid test" that took 4 hr for the results. Had blood work done on Thursday. I was called that evening to come back the next day for an additional test they missed. Showed up and was told I was #18 and to expect a 2hr wait. I was billed $255 for a pill that would keep me from vomiting. read more

Twice my appointment has been canceled by the imaging center because the transplant center does not get authorization to them. I am also notified the day before at 450pm both times with the inability for anyone to assist because they are gone for the day. I called earlier this time to check on insurance, but was told they would only check the day before the procedure for insurance. My experience has not been a good one with DHR. Procedures need to be revisited because taking time off for cancelled appointments and not knowing what may be wrong does not help myself or the family. Dr's rounds are supposed to happen at least once in a 24 hour period. That does not occur at this hospital and I've never seen anything like it. If a patient has an issue and would like to contact their Dr (because of the lack of rounds), some Nurses act like they don't know how to contact the Dr's....something else I've never seen before. Worst experience ever came in for a liver resection and they took out my gallbladder aside from that the icu staff was worthless and being moved to a regular room was even worse the nurses didn't care to come in check on patients or even alleviate their pain from having major surgery! When nurses were called for assistance they would hang up on you or give you attitude.not only did my husband have to bathe me but he had to do everything the nurses duties were..I've never been so dissatisfied with such care from staff and hospital that is supposed to be the best in the RGV. Don't get me started on the doctors ...cause that was the icing on the cake his recommendation was to go to a nursing home..like are you joking I am not a probono case I'm paying insurance to get the appropriate care and that's your recommendation..saddest situation!! read more

Soooo disappointed on staffing they are in dire need of customer service training especially with patient confidentiality. As I was waiting on the front a clerk at the entrance of the emergency would come up to patients asking what was wrong with them and discussing their personal issues in the open. I really felt bad for the patients I think it was inappropriate discussing your personal issues in front of other patients especially if you are going through any type of mental or cancer problems which some of them were I unintentionally picked up diagnosis for several patients. DISAPPOINTED Also, while new patients were with the intake staff OTHER staff nurses would come out the double doors looking for them, I guess there was no structure or communication at one point there were three different nurses who came out from the double doors looking for the same patient and no one knew where the patient was it looked pretty bad. When we finally went through the double doors to be examined there were a couple of nurses drooling on a Dr. with big arms my daughter turned to me and couldn't believe what she had just heard it was very unprofessional and inappropriate around patients and a child. During the few hours of waiting there was a lot of gossiping amongst each other I just couldn't believe how these nurses and professionals were behaving they need to be told this is a professional working environment and leave your raunchy lifestyle at home. I have never experienced such poor behavior from professionals in my life. VERY DISSAPOINTED..... Parking is another issue the parking in the main entrance is ridiculous I think Physicians should park in the back area they must have taken a hand full of parking lots which didn't leave enough for the patient to park I had to go around the block looking for parking several times. Poor building and parking signage. Cath lab communications between shifts not so good for loved ones waiting. Couldn't find out if dad was still in lab or sent to icu or room. Was not given a number for the monitor in the waiting area. Monitor was seldom updated for the ones waiting. Poor tracking of personal belongings, dad's was lost for 12hrs. Need more parking!!!! This hospital saved my dads life. Yes! The wait is very long! But what do people expect? ITS A HOSPITAL!!!!!! They called the day before my procedure to get my insurance for pre-approval. The next day I went in for procedure, they took my insurance card for pre-approval (It took about 40 minutes to get the approval). I later received a bill because it was not approved - not in network. Numerous attempts to get an explanation or help with billing have led to nothing but the runaround. They left notes in file saying they left me voicemails, when they hadn't. They said the pre approval we went thru was to verify that my insurance was "legit". I WOULD NOT recommend!!!! HORRIBLE HOSPITAL. I cannot stress this enough. My mother and I sent my grandmother there because she was not feeling well and they released her the morning after saying she was healthy and all the tests came out good. My grandmother was sent to Edinburg regional the same day because she was still feeling sick and she was diagnosed with stage 4 renal failure. She died five days after. NOT ONLY did DHR release her knowing her condition, they lost her belongings which included her wallet, social security card, passport, and blankets. I've called every day asking if DHR had found it and they said they more than likely will not find it. EVERYONE PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES TO DHR. My mom has a biopsy scheduled today at a certain time in the morning and requires her to fast. They had her waiting for three and a half hours before admitting her for her biopsy. I called to let nurses know she had not eaten. The nurse said they will give her a sandwich, they lied. They didn't give my mom anything to eat after waiting for 3.5 hours in the waiting and after a long procedure. Her total time was 5 hours spent at the hospital. For being a hospital you should be aware that you're treating patients with conditions and they need to treated with care. They didn't feed my mother anything, they gave her a bad of Doritos.... I have been a nurse for 38 years and I currently work as a consultant with hospitals. I was there to witness the birth of my granddaughter. Her doctor was fabulous but the nursing staff has a lot to learn about patient and family engagement and keeping the patient informed. My daughter was told that because of bleeding she could need a transfusion but there was no lab work even drawn to warrant such a comment. She did not need a transfusion. She was also given a medication that interferes with breastmilk production and she was not told to expect that side effect. She was never assessed for her level of understanding and was made to stay in the hospital 6 additional hours for classes that a mother of three older children did not need. Worst ER ever. Do not leave a loved one here alone. Patients may as well be ghosts. The long wait, 2pm to 2am, for a room after patient has been admitted is inhumane. I guess insurance will pay same whether patient is in a room or stuck on a gurney in the hallway. Lack of communication is unbelievable & believe the only reason it is tolerated is because Valleyites think this is just the way it has to be. There's a law to protect passengers from getting stuck hostage on a plane sitting on the tarmac, but why no law to protect admitted patients from being stuck on a gurney without treatment in an ER hallway because the hospital is too full? Hope I'll stop fuming soon. In fairness, I don't fault frontline personnel for the situation, but rather the head administrators & board for poor management & for having priority on profit over patients. Also, I think resources are too stretched in this regional area because demand for an ER exceeds the available supply. The opening of additional private urgent care offices satellite to the hospital would help. P.S. Wouldn't it be common sense to issue a paper disposable breathing mask to everyone who enters the ER? I did not observe any hand sanitizer machines nor observed the nurse sanitize their hands between patients. Sheesh! Got the feeling this ER is spreading disease vs containing it. Also, furnishings in the ER look worn out (eg cracked & peeling chair seats, etc). AND seems every patient should have an easy way to signal for help such as a button to push that alerts a nurse or an assistant. read more

Absolutely bad. I went in for a chest pain on my left side. Had me waiting for 6 hours on a recliner chair. Nurse only checked up on me ONCE. They ordered a chest X-Ray. Never came. The doctor then came and said, "Your blood work looks good, your chest X-ray looks good as well so you are good to go." Then I told him that I never got my x-ray done. They never came and he, in shock said "you didn't get an X-ray done?" My thoughts running through my head..does this mean he is lying about my other tests as well?? Like how can you say my chest X-ray is good when I never received it?? Not to mention, not once in those 6 hours did they bring food or water. Mind you I was there since 11am. Then the nurse has the audacity to give me MAJOR attitude. MAJOR. He even questioned, "did I not hook you up to an IV?" Uhm no sir. You never did nor did you check up on me or your other patients. And what pisses me off the most, is that DHR is going to charge me what like 4-5k maybe more for sitting in a damn recliner chair for 6 hours. With false test results and a rude nurse? Literally waiting for 6 hours because I waited for 5 hours for an X-ray that was supposed to be done when I got there and the nurse barely called 5 hours later?? My background: BSBA Industrial Management, Law Enforcement, Military, EMT, father a hospital administrator for 30 years. I have been attending to the DHR ER for the last 10 years with no complains. I have always received a good to great service. Today, it was different. I was there accompanying a friend. My observations: The ER was overcrowded (people on hallways waiting in bed). Long wait for results (3 hrs plus). There was a lot of personnel on duty but "working"?????. There was a woman complaining and almost screaming. The ladies near her wearing the purple suits were like mannequins (just sitting there), the nurses had the same attitude (wearing green). The ill lady wanted to go to the restroom urgently but, she was ignored. All the sudden, she is standing up to help herself after being ignored. On the meantime, the personnel around it is just looking at each other (no apparent situational awareness). The poor woman couldn't walk by herself to the bathroom and no one helped her. A person accompanying another patient had to call the attention to the nurse cause' no one was doing anything to assist this woman. The young nurse got upset at the person calling her attention and gave an excuse in an unprofessional/immature manner. Employees with no sense of liability and respect. Performance observed: -There is a lot of young pretty people providing service. Some of them so pretty that look like dolls and act as such. No empathy, no sense of urgency, no respect to older people, no sense on how to prioritize (it is more important to enter data in the computer than assisting this patient that is losing it in pain), it is more important to be connected to the smart phone than assisting others, no sense of initiative (if you see someone about to fall should I just help and avoid the person to fall or should I let the person fall and then ask or think what should I do?). The typical selfish millennial attitude. Poor of us when we get older. -It appeared there was no one in charge at the ER. Almost everyone was working in a slow flow like automated. They looked like union members from a utility company that need 4 people to change a light bulb (if you know what I mean). -I am not saying the personnel didn't know what to do in their respective specialization/expertise but, in an ER it is all about SERVICE. -It is understandable that the ER is full, but people need to learn to multitask. A good leader/chief nurse in the ER is needed to take them there in an effective and productive manner. Suggestions: -You need a bigger ER to triage people with real emergencies from the ones just needing Urgency care. Lots of people around us with colds/flu/seasonal viruses. I saw adults mixed with pediatric patients. -Good service it is not about to hire beautiful people as eye candy. Good service means to hire people that can perform their jobs professionally and people that care/ have empathy about the people in need. You need real nurses, technicians, and assistants, not a bunch of princesses. -Need to control or stop the use of smart phones. People are paying more attention to their smart phones that to their emergency work. This is an ER not a brake room. -Need to teach people about priorities and initiative. No all people are born with that so they need to be trained. -Need to train people about the need on empathy. They should know that they won't be young and beautiful forever. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. -Need to reaffirm assistance personnel/nurses that sometimes they will have to go into the restroom with patients. If they can't handle the smells, they are in the wrong line of work and they don't have enough love and dedication to honor the Hippocratic Oath. -Sad to say but, a lot of people in the medical field now days are only looking for the money proceedings and prestige they can get from their services. Really? -Also, your DHR Home web page you should have a section easy to find for suggestions and complains. I would prefer to send this review directly to you and not to the open media. The assistance in your home page is more for people to pay for services. Money is more important for you guys than saving lives/providing service???? Now, I understand the low reviews given to you by other patients. I hope you solve these issues soon. They are not good first for the patients and then not good for business. read more

My wife delivered our Son there last year. Service was just fare; they do have opportunities on the empathy part with patients. However, what was discouraging on my experience is that they did not perform a procedure on my baby and charged for it, and instead of just reversing the charge on my card they argue that they have to go through a administrative process and have not reimbursed me since Nov 20th, 2020. Emergency room was a Veterinary clinic, small, overcrowded and dirty. Never saw a doctor, only the nurse took xrays and diagnosed a severely comminuted humerus (broken arm). Given a sling and told to go home and wait a week for a specialist to see him. Waited a week to see Dr. Elzaim, one of DHR's Ortho specialists. He took another xray, looked at it and gave him a brace and said he was not going to touch it, let it heal like it was?? We waited another week-and-a-half to see two more specialists for second opinions and ended up back at DHR with Dr. Crous, whom said he would have set the arm straight but it was too far along in the healing process now to bother. So now my son's upper arm is deflected 16 degrees and will have to readjust to getting his coordination back. Then comes the incompetence in the billing dept. Given overpriced bills for seeing Dr. we never saw and then told we were offered discounts we never got an itemized statement for, then retracted the discount and said it expired. Online bill pay freezes up and doesn't work and on and on. Go somewhere else where they care! read more

I had surgery two weeks ago on April 16, 2020 at DHR. I was concerned about having the surgery during the COVID pandemic. My doctor, Dr. Gustavo Villegas kept me well informed as how the situation was going with COVID which helped us make my decision of having the surgery. The day of the surgery I checked in DHR and my husband went with me. He was allowed to be with me until i had my surgery. All the nurses were very nice and attentitive. The anesthiologist was great she came in explained everything she was going to do and gave me suggestions of what to do afterwards and the importance. She made me feel so comfortable she had great bedside manners and was very compassionate. Dr. Villegas is awesome he is very compassionate and cares about his patients. He spends the time explaining thoroughly and he makes you feel very comfortalbe. He has awesome bedside manners. My overall experience with DHR was great inspite of the current COVID situation I felt safe. DHR has taken a proactive approach to make patients feel safe in their hospital. read more

HR - unprofessional I applied for a job position which i was told after 2 months of applying and interviewed that "I got the job". July 3rd i accepted the job position in the am, i was given all the information for application completion and orientation dates. Everything was set and start date. Turned in my letter of resignation, within 4 to 5 hours after i accepted the position. HR personnel calls me to tell me that this position had been filled and no longer available to me. WTF!!!! The biggest disappointment ever! I arrived in an ambulance not being able to stand up or sit up. Emergency Dr. ran tests and came back and said he couldn't find anything wrong with me. I had a massive headache and nausea also. They gave me a saline solution and the dr. wanted to send me home! It felt like they were shuffling cattle around in there. Dr. Said, look, you can move your feet and arms you're okay! My husband told dr. They better find out what's wrong with me and we stayed 2 nights. The absolute worse hospital I have ever been in! UPDATE! A lady from our church was rushed to renaissance last week, was given a saline solution in and sent home. She got worse at home and was taken to a different hospital and was told only 30% of her kidneys were workin and was put in intensive care. read more

Working for DHR was awful! Management was terrible, very arrogant and very condescending. I was nothing but discriminated against as an employee, by management and co-workers. DHR supposedly holds the highest bar in the valley for their care of patients and for their employees, so seeing how they treat their employees first hand was very disappointing. Horrible experience. I received a bill for approx. $11,450 for a surgery I never received. While the insurance paid the bulk of the bill, the reality was that I never received this surgery. Figuring that it was an honest oversight, I called the Contact # on the statement and was given the option to leave my phone # for a call back. After an hour or so of not receiving a phone call, I called back but this time decided to hold for the "next available representative." After holding for almost 14 minutes, while all this time listening to a nauseating musical tone and a constantly repeating message advising me that someone would be with me shortly, I decided to hang up and call their toll free #. Upon doing so, I received the same nauseating message as I had before. After holding for 3 minutes, I hung up on this line as well. It's important to point out that during all this time, I was provided plenty of automated options by which I could make a payment. Seems like DHR is pretty good at taking payments but not as committed to resolving client complaints. Sadly, this is not the first time I've experienced a billing issue with DHR. Stay away!!! Was in the valley for a few days and had a severe back issue. Could not stand, sit and barely able to walk. First encounter is Front desk RN (Indian guy) didn't get his name. Couldn't see straight at this time. He was rude beyond anything Ive ever experienced. They got me in, started an IV, took X-rays, took blood, still NOTHNG for pain (open iv) sent me to register?!! Which means this...they got what they wanted. My insurance card. I was then placed back in the main waiting room in a gown, open iv, screaming in debilitating pain and was NEVER seen. EVER. After 4 hours my husband wheeled me back into the ER, had them remove my "empty iv" and we drove to rio grande regional. I was seen in 5 minutes, laying in a bed with pain meds with in 15. Unbelievable. This hospital (DHR) had people that had been in the ER For 10 hours!!!!!! I will stop at nothing to report this facility!! They should be closed down. Do NOT Come near this place.
