Foregoing the obvious…read moreomissions of chains such as Ask or Cafe Rouge, there has been one giant missing piece which my taste buds have not thanks me for since moving to the town; the lack of a Mexican restaurant. Whilst many may not agree with me that Mexican food is some of the tastiest, loveliest, most homely cuisine you can honour your tongue with, I happen to absolutely love it. So as soon as I saw the sign, I was in like a shot to make a reservation (definitely something to consider if you want to go at peak times). Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment though. When you've been waiting for and wanting something for a long time, in the end it's more than likely to disappoint. So it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I entered Baja yesterday evening ready, as ever an Englishman tends to be, for disappointment. What I got was an explosion of spice, flavour and a sense that I'd been returning to this place again and again. I'd just found the best food in Bedford by quite some way. The restaurant itself is clean and modern, with just the right amount of colour to set the scene. A combination of tables and booths overlook, well not too much to be honest. The view outside wasn't spectacular (just some empty shops), but the view on my table turned out to be more than adequate. (As an aside, the bar at the back of the restaurant does have a better outlook, with the Castle Mound and river just in sight). I started with a bowl of Breaded Calamari and Tentacles, which was not only delicious, but also came in a portion that could feed a family of four. I'm definitely not complaining though; the squid was a perfect texture and the breadcrumbs gave a satisfying crunch. Spot on. There was the risk that after such a humongous starter, there wouldn't be any room left for the main course. That was until it made its heavenly appearance on the table in front of me. My Enchilada was stuffed with chicken, Mexican rice and beans, and sat on a bed of passata. Topped off with melted Monterey Jack cheese, salsa and crema, it practically melted in the mouth. There was a hint of coriander running through the dish, which set the whole thing off for me. As my Mexican-loving eyes are probably too big for my belly, I also chose Frijoles as a side. Black, pinto and kidney beans, refried and topped with crema and melted cheese. They were truly stunning. I could have happily sat and had a couple of those as a meal on their own. My dining companions' food was also very well received. In particular, the Big Baja Salad was a definite hit, coming in its own huge edible tortilla bowl and with more lamb than any one person would dare to eat in one sitting (again, not a complaint). Desert was a big no as we were all completely stuffed from the wonderful food, though next time I'll try and save enough room to sample a Sweet Chimichanga. The only real disappointment was with our cocktail. Our mojitos tasted of not much other than rum and definitely needed more than the single leaf of mint that had been put in the glass. But that's not really much of a complaint, when the meal itself was so well prepared. I made a point of saying before the meal arrived that I hoped I would finally find a restaurant in Bedford that I would want to return to frequently. I found it.

So I ignored them and went anyway and I'm glad I did because it was a really delicious, good value meal with great friendly service. Rich and I shared the choriqueso and the guacamole bowl to start. The choriqueso as you may be able to guess is a ton of chorizo with a ton of melted cheese. Of course this was bloody delicious. The guacamole was good too, I'm not sure what was achieved by it being in a tortilla bowl but it definite didn't detract from anything. For mains I had tacos el pastor and Rich had fajitas with chicken and chorizo. The tacos were great - no weird hard shells here - and the filling very tasty. If I had any complaints here it would be that the meat had a slightly 'chalky' aftertaste, so possibly I'd try another taco filling on another visit. The hot sauce that comes with the tacos is pretty bloody hot, believe them when they say that. Rich's only complaint was that the fajitas came with a large amount of filling and only two small tortillas. To drink I had a bottle of Sol and a very good, very strong margarita. Rich had a pint of lager and a rum and coke. For two starters, two mains and four drinks we paid around £50 which I thought was pretty good. I'll definitely be back! I just hope it sticks around as businesses seem to come and go in this location (so go support them!).

A layer of lettuce sat on top with cream served with pico de gallo (Fresh Mexican salsa), and a spicy dipping sauce. The pulled pork was juicy and full of flavour, the outside was nice and crispy, and the spicy sauce was the perfect addition. I made a major foodie error, and ordered the Cochinita Pibil burrito for my main, which is basically an upsacle non-fried version of the Chimichangas - in my defence: PULLED PORK! The Cochinita Pibil was slow cooked pulled-pork marinated in oranges, lime and traditional Mayan flavouring, and was spot on! I HAVE NO REGRETS The restaurant is a quaint little place at the Chorlton end of Barlow Moor Road, with a large open window and terrace, which is great on a warm Summers' night like on the night I visited. The inside is filled with Mexican style décor, like an awesome painting depicted Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The price was very reasonable and service was great, friendly and attentive, and I will definitely return to sample the guacamole, and bigger variety of their dishes.

Olaaaaa amigos!!…read more It's a little bit on the pricey side for the city, but damn the quality is so good it's worth blowing the budget and I did spy a lunch menu, so if you want a bargain head there for lunch! Food wise, massive choice of interesting and experimental flavours.. I went for the cod wth the mango and jalapeño glaze.. It was a grill so it came flaming hot with sizzling peppers and onion.. Oh and a side of sweet potato fries! Oh my word!!! Amazing!!! I devoured it like a champ! My dad got the burrito and not being a fan of spicy food, he asked for it to be plain and less spicy, the server got this done for him no problem and he's already on about his next visit. Drinks wise.. There's a massive selection of cocktails and mocktails, for those of us who don't drink or are on a detox! My dad got the virgin colada, which he lapped up! I on the other hand, love a drink, so got a lovely tequila blush, as I saw it had won their cocktail championships! Well I can see why, a lovely fruity pink tequila blush with a side of prosecco... Yes I kid you not, the prosecco came in a milk bottle!! Epic!! My other cocktail didn't disappoint either.. It was called santas sparkler.. No brainer for me as I love a bit of sparkle. Damn did it sparkle.. Elderflower liquor, prosecco and sparkle.. Yes yes yes, beautiful! We weren't offered a second round of drinks until after we'd finished our food, and only got water with the bill. Weirdly at this point the server became super friendly - maybe she'd received some good news halfway through our meal, or was happy we were the last customers! Food-wise the cheese fondue and nachos with everything selection I don't think wowed anyone but were nice enough. My tacos were all fine although completely disintegrated once I added sauces. The carne asada was definitely more like braised meat than steak, but still tasted fine. The shrimp was again fine but unremarkable. Overall the taste couldn't compare to the fish tacos over at Fusion Lab. My taco dorado had the nicest filling (guacamole, chorizo) but it wasn't the best deep-fried taste - not sure whether that's just my preference or something about the oil but would give them the benefit of the doubt. The huitaloche enchilada wasn't that exciting in the end - basically a sort of mushroom flavour, I wouldn't go for it unless you lurve mushrooms. I think Yayo is right this would be good as a late night place for some snacks after drinking, however it seems to close by 11 even on Saturday so they might be missing a trick there. Overall I wouldn't say no to going back but nor would I suggest it.
