What a beautiful local theater! We were in Oahu for Spring Break and traveling with our theater teen so thought to check the listing and luckily there was a show: West Side Story and it fit into our schedule. Easy parking, clean rest rooms, no frills concession, and cute merch. I got the reusable cup too. People were so nice and friendly. We sat at the very back of the theater and enjoyed it. The actors were so talented and so glad we were able to see it. My teen also got autographs and the actors were so happy and willing to sign her playbill. A couple were surprised that they were being asked for an autograph. When in Hawaii, after enjoying the beach and watching the sunset, why not catch a musical produced well run by the local community and supported and loved by the community. read more

The last two shows at Diamond head were HUGE disappointments! Please! We are Season ticket holders and unfortunately talked our best friends into going to all of the shows with us. What a letdown. Piney Needle and the last 5 years were a total letdown and waste of time. We are seriously thinking of not renewing for next year. Who picks these shows? I feel sorry for the actors who have to endure these lousy scripts. We know that these poor productions are not their fault. Squeezed in a visit to Arendelle during my Hawaii trip -- Frozen the Musical, that is! I believe this was a local community production, but done so well! Didn't feel like an amateur or youth production, very professional, even the sets/costumes. Strong cast, singing on point. The venue was very nice! Comfortable seating, easy to purchase and decently-priced tickets online, great acoustics. Parking lot right across the street, and even a great view of the Waikiki skyline at night! The performance itself was very very good, especially the leads playing Elsa and Anna. Didn't purchase any concessions, but for this show they also had light-up snowflake wands for the kiddos to light up at a certain moment at the end of the show. Cute! read more

Frozen... Currently running from July 26th to August 25th is Dinsney's Frozen the Musical and at the last moment I got a chance to experience it all with the flair that I could never imagine. As I got the notice of an extra ticket I literally flew at the chance to see Frozen and who wouldn't as it was an honor to even be though feeling so grateful and humble I was basically speechless for this opportunity. Tonight was hosted by First Hawaiian Bank and I was so impressed with the selection of activities as there was photo booth, food, drinks and even shaved ice (of course!) along with Elsa and Anna who was amazing and stunning with us all, the vibe was a bright and festive with the theme as I enjoyed my "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" drink swirling my rock candy keeping things cool. The play was just wonderful the performers along with the theater staff who notify in a fun and polite way of the time we had before the show starts it was certainly the night to remember as I never experience anything like it. Thank you for my invite I'm so thankful and enjoyed the night very much, time spent with quality is certainly well worth the value. Diamond head Theater has improved a lot from the previous years with their new Theater. The seating is much better and more comfortable and the walk space to get in and out is wider. The restrooms are way more rooming with more stalls and sinks compared to the old building they had which the lines for the restrooms were backed up with long lines. We have been season subscribers for many years. We have also gotten friends to be season subscribers with us and like to go to dinner before the evening performances. My extended family also loves DHT and many have their own subscription and are getting the next generation to also love live theater! The new theater is lovely and has great acoustics and sight lines--not a bad seat anywhere! Some people do find it a bit chilly and bring a sweater or a wrap and lots of folks wear slacks. The box office provides excellent service if you need to swap tickets. You can even swap them for an entirely different show if you will be out of town and rather have more people see a particular show (with or without you). You get great value because you are able to have NYC quality performances at local community theater prices! It's MUCH cheaper than buying a pair of tickets in NY to get an entire season subscription with DHT, for 6 shows! read more

Love, love, love this newly-renovated venue! The auditorium is so light & spacious and clean, and seating has ample keg room for those of us with long legs. We saw "Mama Mia" last night and simply enjoyed every, single minute of it. You could tell the performers really enjoyed what they were doing so it translated into a very happy audience who could sing along to their favorite ABBA songs. The singers voices were awesome, especially Alison Aldcroft, who played the bride's mom. Bravo! Community theatre at its fullest for those who believe art should not be criticized. Directors have different visions, as do set designers, costume designers, audio and lighting engineers, musicians and of course the actors. Everyone drawn from enthusiastic, talented pool of community members with passion but differing levels of development. The current production of My Fair Lady could easily graced any stage. A simple but well used set incorporating modern projection to make it more than it was. Subtle lighting that created a 3D pop of the main singer. Costumes so colorful that you focus on them hiding mistakes in synchronicity in dancing. A production with a very strong cast and solid singers. Put another way, those in the audience too young to have even seen the movie adaptation laughed and laughed and laughed at the timeless comedy. A production of Mamma Mia somewhat different. Younger actors, some seeming like they were still in high school, less "perfection" in the actors ability to sing and dance, music from the cheap, Cassio keyboard sounds of 1990's department store synths. The music of ABBA. Realism (seriously folks, who in the real world would break out in a Disney Newsies dance number) and one heck of a good time that had everyone on their feet by the final curtain. Go, don't go but if you want to experience a bit more than UH football or volleyball as a form of entertainment, Diamond Heat Theater offers a great alternative. What started out as a military theater for the Fort Ruger complex, it has been a long time location for Honolulu's performing arts, our community theater location. This was our first time at the Diamond Head Theatre and we're already excited for the next show! I never saw their old theater, but the new one completed in January 2023 is gorgeous. I definitely see why they're known as "The Broadway of the Pacific". And for such a fair price, too! The staff were all so friendly and helpful, offering a true serving of the aloha spirit. You can tell everyone is happy to be there! We didn't get any food or drink this time, but from what we saw, their menu offers a lot for both young and old! Live performances in Honolulu, Hawaii... My appreciation for the theater stems from high school days. We had a teacher named Mrs. Sandla who incorporated attending plays into our school curriculum. She was one of my favorite teachers and I thank her for making me a better, more well-rounded person. I can't really remember which productions I saw in those days. Later on, I brought my mom to see musicals such as "Carousel" and "Oklahoma" here. We really enjoyed the cast, props, costumes, free parking, and overall experience! Recently, I saw a Facebook posting in regards to the renovation of Diamond Head Theater. There was a sign up for the public to take plants and plant cuttings before they all got destroyed. I brought some tools and dug up some Irises and cut some plumeria, jade, and bougainvillea! My mom is like an interior designer for her garden... the plants all went to a good home! If you don't want to sign up for some plants (bromeliads, bird of paradise, and cactus are also available), you might be interested in renting a costume or two for Halloween! I've been a fan of theaters forever, and Diamond Head Theater is no exception. The parking is easy, from the plentiful spaces across the street at the college to the smaller lot behind the theater, it's truly not hard to find parking. I suppose that speaks to its location, not being in an extremely bustling part of town, but I rather like it that way. I regularly come in early to park under a tree for a nap before the show. The seats are luck of the draw. If you happen to be sitting behind taller folks, well, it's not going to be the best experience. I usually select an aisle seat so I can lean if needed. The line for the bathroom is as you would expect, but they have attendants to direct the patrons. The pricing is beyond reasonable. No resellers. I remember I had season tickets for years, which I am typically ambivalent about, but it brought me to Noises Off early on and I've been loyal since. I don't usually seek out plays- they're serious and bring out all the feels- but after the first 10 minutes of Noises Off I was howling. I laughed myself hoarse. It was absolutely delightful. I could not stop talking about it. So much so that for years I would periodically look up the play to see if it was playing elsewhere. In fact, I did just that yesterday and realized I never wrote a review for this theater. Bravo to Diamond Head Theater for bringing such a gem to Honolulu. Love that they're going strong. This is Hawaii's oldest performing-arts center that started in 1915. It was built by the army as a USO movie theater and then converted to a stage venue, for classic Broadway musicals & plays. It reminds me of the Shubert theater in New Haven. These small venues were a great way to see.fantastic live entertainment before or after it hit Broadway. They are now in the process of building a new theater that will open in fall of 2022. The Theater did not have any character, so I could see why they did not try to renovate it. There was two parking lots, so there was plenty of parking. I will give this 5 stars because they are going to replace it in 2022 and they have a number of great classic shows for their upcoming season. They were well organized and very Covid19 safe. Saw A Chorus Line, this has been sold out for all dates for a while and happy my daughter got tickets early. The show was not Broadway caliber, however for the price , it was well worth it. read more

Diamond head theater has been around forever! For like 100 years. I'm not kidding. Due to covid, they don't have any normal theater performances. Instead, they have these concert series performances that they hold in the back parking lot. The performers perform from the loading dock deck and the cars are separated in the parking lot to maintain social distancing. It's like the old time drive in movies. Even the audio is transmitted through the radio. We watched the women singers from the 60s performance. It was pretty great for $30 per car. We brought some wine and snacks and made a little party of it. It wasn't perfect... you could hear the bus when it stopped at the adjacent stop and if you looked over, you could see people running or enjoying the music from their yards lol. But it's ok, it's much more entertaining listening/watching live music with others (even if everyone is in their cars) than just listening to the songs on your own. My family has watched shows here for years, 2002 Chicago and sound of music, I had a family member in staff. We donate and have next years shows in our calendars. Leaving tonight's My Fair Lady my niece, cousin and her friend who I invited are horrified. HORRIFIED. They were extremely uncomfortable throughout the entire show due to the abuse, misogyny and awful context of this show. I understand it is a classic, but we simply NO LONGER LIVE in a society where this context is funny or cute. I hope to see the theater remain relevant and hope we can adjust our content....and quite honestly I'm humiliated at having subjected my young family members to these antiquated, outdated, not funny, abusive and triggering plot lines. The cast was wonderful as usual. I'm astounded at how many of them had to turn the other cheek and recite abusive lines, memorized. These "jokes" are horribly antiquated forms of low level amusement and absolutely nothing that the new generation wants to hear. Wake up theater! You will be performing to 90 year olds who giggle about a woman receiving a black eye. This performance was humiliating for the people watching and the cast. read more

I've been to four over the last couple of years (I'm a high school teacher and enjoy seeing my students on stage) and have not left disappointed. Best seating for me has either been first few rows in the middle behind the first section of seats, in the front to the left of the stage, and all the way up back by the booth. Cons: -tickets are pricey -drinks and snacks are also pricey -I don't recommend going cheap on the seats to the far sides of the auditorium as the view is challenging, especially if you're short Pros: -quality shows -plenty of free parking -friendly volunteers -they'll hold your flowers/leis in the ticket office for you during the show -sound quality is good read more

Diamond Head Theatre has been in existence for 100+ years, and I did not have the chance to watch their shows until in recent years. Back in December 2018, I watched Irving Berlin's "Holiday Inn", featuring one of my former co-workers and good friend Erin Wong as Linda Mason. The show did not disappoint at all, and I was so happy to see Erin after the show and chat with her for some time. Fast forward to 2020, when COVID hit Hawaii and changed many of our livelihoods, as well as operations at the Diamond Head Theatre. Many kudos and props to their directors and staff for coming up with a brilliant idea of doing some drive-in outdoor mini-concerts in their back parking lot. I went to "It's My Party" in October 2020 and it was great to see Erin doing her performances, even if it was from a distance! I wish Diamond Head Theatre all the best as they navigate through these challenges and hope they can eventually return to normal. Such as doing live shows in-person. read more

We have a lot of good local talent and this theatre is so comfortable and convenient to go and watch these various shows. Set design and musical compliments always are spot on. Lots of free parking across the street at Kapiolani Community College. All seats at the theatre are great seats. Came here to watch "elf" and the family totally enjoyed the outstanding performances. We LOVE our local community theatre, the "Broadway of the Pacific." My kuya (older brother) and I love to catch a musical here every now and then. Over the years, we've seen The King and I, Newsies, and most recently, Waitress here, as well as other musicals in between. The sound quality, like how the actors are balanced, has always been great. The orchestra/pit has been splendid for every show we've seen. And we're most glad that they're in the works of expanding! Thus, parking is limited at the moment, but it's all good because of the bright future that's to come here! Oh! We also sat in on a vocal masterclass taught here a few years ago by someone word-class (I'm sorry, the name of this person slipped out of my mind...), and I got some tips for my own singing/delivery. It was also cool to see the backstage area of the theatre with ballet and theatre classes happening simultaneously. If I lived closer, I might have been taking their adult classes myself! read more

One of my students had a role in _A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder_, and she very generously invited me to see the show. It's been a while since I've seen a production at the Diamond Head Theatre, so I was excited for another visit. Since my ticket was at will-call, I arrived about 30 minutes early. I saw that most people were turning into the lot across from the theatre, so I parked there as well. (Later, I noticed there was also a parking lot behind the theatre. I'm guessing that once that fills up, everyone parks across the street.) It was no problem to pick up my ticket. I showed them my ID, received my little envelope, and headed to the entryway for seating. All the employees were welcoming and friendly as I received my program and made my way to my seat. They did a great job of getting everyone to their seats and taking special care for those who had canes or crutches. They also warned everyone that the first act was an hour and a half, so everyone could be sure to take a bathroom break ahead of time. I sat in Row D and after a few conversations with the other patrons, we realized there were two seat 207s in that row! The chair for 209 had a sticker over it, so I'm guessing the 208 sticker was just pulled off the extra 207 seat. Most of the patrons seemed to be experienced theatre-goers, so we arranged ourselves without any issues. After the orchestra was warmed up, the lights dimmed and there were some opening announcements, including that we could meet the cast members outside after the show. The curtain went up and the show started. They had one intermission. Food and beverages were available outside before the show and during the break. I did notice some very long lines for the bathrooms, especially for the women's bathroom. Although your experience will certainly vary by show, I really enjoyed this production. It was funny and silly, if a bit predictable. The set, costume, and light design were all well done. Since it was such a small cast, the actors played many roles and had to do so many quick-changes backstage, especially the D'Ysquith actor. Great job to the crew on that, since I know it can be challenging! All the cast members really did an outstanding job. As promised, the actors came outside after the show, including my student. It was nice to be able to talk to her and tell her what a great job she did, since not production companies do this after the shows. By the time I left, there was barely any traffic from the lots, but I did see that there was a Sheriff on duty to watch traffic and make sure that patrons were crossing the street safely. It was a lovely afternoon out and I wouldn't hesitate to see another show at DHT! read more

Brand new theater! We saw Cinderella and Bodyguard. First time the air-conditioning was too cold, second time air-conditioning was OK. The staff was very helpful. I called the box office to determine playdates for my online order because I lost the email. Once there the ushers were very helpful. The staff are all volunteers and have designated roles. Guys help you to your seats but can't help you with handicap seating questions. Please be patient. Looking forward to the next performance. read more

DHT THEATER PRODUCTIONS I come to see plays here from time to time whenever a play title catches my fancy. Plays shown here are put on by the theater itself (rather than outside theater groups coming in to put on theater productions). Topics tend to be whimsical and or often push the envelope a bit but not too much. Their directors do a really good job adding the right touches to bring stories to life. This theater is well-loved and well-used. It's really quite a busy place! There's always something going on, either classes or production work or both happening right after the other. It's amazing how this place is just a dizzying frenzy of activity! It has an education department that trains people to be good actors and performers so it can draw from a pool of people who attend their classes. Sometimes they already know who will fill certain roles. What roles are not decided are selected via auditions. Auditions are held right here at this theater for each play meaning that they draw from local talent. You might often see actors in different performances across different Oahu theaters cast here. It's also a great place to learn about the various parts of theater production. They use utilize a volunteer stage crew that comes from current and studying actors, directors, & production people. If you want to help out a particular play, my understanding is you need to be available for most if not all dates of entire productions, practices, & dress rehearsals. About the theater: This theater was once a movie house turned into a theater production play theater which is why the seats are set up in rows as though it were a movie theater. My DHT acting classmate Val told me about this. It is not a new theater but it is pretty well equipped with modern conveniences. The theater is air conditioned. Seats are plush and comfy. There is a cold water fountain to the left of the entrance. Floor is concrete covered by carpet in most places. The ceiling is super high which gives one the feeling of open air not confined or stuffy although it can get warm inside if there are a lot of people or the air conditioner is not working. The stage is quite large. Dancing and acrobatics can be done as well as aerial movements on guy wires strung from the ceiling. Fairly large, two-story props fit comfortably. Huge backdrops extending width of the stage are possible; black curtains and narrow ceiling height white panels on the sides behind the curtains help block the actors waiting for cues on the side and set personnel helping actors out of sight from the view of audience members. Acoustics are really good and the actors usually have microphones on so there's no chance you won't hear them. Really there is no bad seat in the house if you are adult height. Seats are aligned in rows in two major sections, front and middle to back with smaller wing sections left & right of the theater. There is a set musician section to the right at front so there are no seats at the front right area. Upper seating is recessed gently so you don't have much to worry about people in front of you blocking your view. Lower seating is slightly recessed too but the stage is up a bit higher so there's almost no blocking from bodies in front. I prefer to sit a little farther back rather than right up close to the very front. Seats do not extend past the shoulders and do not have head rests. Seat rows are set closer together than newer theaters so once you're in your seats, it can be a trek going past people to reach the aisle. Be sure to use the restroom before going to your seats especially if your seats are in the inner area of a row. Restrooms are located to the far left (men's) and right (women's) of the front doors. The women's restroom has four sinks and about 8 stalls. Before, during intermission, and after plays there are always long lines at the women's restroom although the lines do get thru fairly quickly. There are two side doors on each side which are locked on performance nights and are unlocked during intermissions and conclusion of performances. The box office is at the front doors although I have never had to use them. I always purchase tickets online and have the tickets mailed to me. They do have a will call open on show nights. You can become a season ticket holder to access show tickets all theater season long. Check online for season and individual show tickets. The theater parking lot is adjacent to the theater building on the Ewa side, opposite the front theater facade/entrance. There are a good number of stalls but not enough for a filled theater so other options are to find (free) street parking or to park (for free) across the theater entrance at KCC (Kapiolani Community College) where there is a huge parking lot that is usually empty (of KCC students) by the time DHT performances take place. Come to see a play or two or more here. It's fun to see how characters are interpreted and how stories come to life! read more

I always like the historical looking Theaters and this is one of them. I've been to several productions here from South Pacific, Little Mermaid and now A Charlie Brown Christmas. And I enjoyed the local talent of the islands. There is a an array of talent here on the islands and I am glad there are some venues for them to display their talent. The venue fits easily over 200 and normally it's not freezing in the theater but maybe because of the cool weather outside it made it cooler inside. The only thing CON for me is the leg room is rather tight but i realize this is the original configuration. So endure it for the couple of hours of the show. Parking is immediately in the back of the theater or across at Kapiolani Community College. Get there early if it is a good show to get closer parking. And ENJOY the show! read more

Last night was my second time coming here to watch a play. The first time was to see "Funny Girl" last September and yesterday was "Legally Blonde". Prior to coming here I would pass this theatre pretty much every day on my way home from hiking Diamond Head. I would see what's playing on the marquee but didn't make the effort to come see the play until I was invited by friends who had an extra ticket. Fortunately I had no plans that evening so I tagged along only to enjoy myself. This theatre is on the cozy side with maximum seating capacity of 473 people. To the right there is the orchestra of about a dozen peeps. Before the curtain goes down and during intermission, they have an outdoor concession stand selling wine, soft drinks and snacks. In my opinion, it is important to support the theatre and local talent. So much effort and resources are put in for the production and on both occasions I enjoyed myself very much. The new season starts Sept 2013 with "Cabaret". Season tickets are now available at a great rate ranging from $66 to $228 for the year (6 shows). Last night they mentioned that for new memberships you can submit the name of a current season ticket holder and the winner of that drawing is a Las Vegas tour package for 2 people! Last year there were only 50 people in the drawing so the odds were not bad at all. Parking is a plus when coming to see a play. They do have a dedicated lot next to the theatre but you can also park at KCC, which is just right across the street. With discounted prices and FREE parking, it's very tempting to get yourself season tickets. Overall, I have had 2 great shows here and looking forward to the 2013 - 2014 season. read more

a DIAMOND in the rough. I was recently privileged to be in the audience on the opening night of the production of "Promises, Promises." I attended thanks to the invitation of a friend, and though I did not know a single thing about the production (not even a tiny bit about the plot), I enjoyed my first-time experience/event at DH Theatre immensely. PARKING: Options are a lot directly behind the theatre or across the street at KCC. Since it was opening night, there was a tent set up where patrons gathered before showtime for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres Not knowing anyone at all, I meekly picked up my ticket at the will-call window (a picture ID is needed) and took a seat on one of the benches fronting the theatre. People started to enter the theatre between 730-745pm, and so I followed the masses to wait inside. The interior is not new and sleek, but it does have some charm so to speak. The musicians are located towards the right hand side facing the stage, and I found myself sitting not far from them. Allow the staff be your guide. A friendly older gentlemen kindly showed me to my row and pointed out my seat. The seats are somewhat similar to those at the older Consolidated movie theatres; think Pearlridge West or Kahala 8-plex. Spacing between the rows is moderate. The production itself was extremely brilliant. I thought it was well produced, acted, and choreographed. I enjoyed every minute of it! BOTTOM LINE: A wonderful first-time experience at Diamond Head Theatre. I hope I'm able to attend productions here in the future. read more
